This was my adventure today. It started off a pretty typical Sunday. A simcha in the early AM. A stop at the Lawrence post office (yes, here in the Five Towns the post office is open for a few hours on a Sunday!). I dropped a book by my sister, folded some laundry, watered my plants - the indoor ones, the outdoor ones are swimming away on their own due to all the rain weí ve been having. As I said, a typical Sunday. At midday I took a moment to stop what I was doing and glanced out the window. I noticed that for the first time in, well, almost forever, it was nice outside. Really nice. Now, it is June 9th today and it should have been really nice outside for a while but it hasní t been. Ití s been a cold, rainy and windy spring. The nice weather is almost unrecognizable.

SUMMER 2013, Esra
When my children were young a typical Sunday meant homework, studying, birthday parties, team sports, car pools and shopping. Now that my children have their own homes and agendas, my Sunday plans and theirs doní t usually overlap. For many of my friends a typical Sunday means seeing the grandchildren - visiting, babysitting, barbecuing dinner. Alas, my grandchildren are ì currentlyî living abroad, so sadly, I caní t partake in those pastimes. I opened the front door to confirm that it was, indeed, a nice day and I made a swift decision. I was going to the beach. Of course I couldní t ì justî go to the beach. I had a bag of T.J. Maxx returns in the trunk of my car. I would take care of that too. I love buying Continued on page 14

Continued from page 12 clothing for my grandchildren but now that they live overseas it is a little more involved getting them the goods (see last monthí s Spotlight). Getting a package to Israel is only step one. Then there is trying the clothes on and sending back what doesní t fit. And then come the returns. Happily, my purchases are usually a success and returns arení t that common. But today there was a bag in my car. My plan was to hit the beach first while the sun was still shining and then head to the neighboring town of Oceanside to make the return. There are only a few people I can call on who have a similar family set up as I do, who love the beach and who are spontaneous. I tried them all. #1 was working; #2 was babysitting; #3 was at a graduation and #4 whispered that she had drop-in company and couldní t leave her house. Rather than chuck my plans I decided to be an adult and go solo. I switched into a long, flowy skirt and sweater (it might be sunny out but the first nice day 14

was bound to be chilly on the beach). I took out a plastic beach bag and packed my pad and pen (now it was a work session, not just goof-off time), sunscreen, a book, two clementines and an insulated cup of iced tea. As I was carrying enough I forewent the pocketbook for a fanny-pack (sorry girls!), inserted my driverí s license, a credit card, a few bills and lip balm. I was out the door when I remembered a beach chair. Ití s been seven months since the back of my car was coated in a layer of pale beige sand and since Ií ve heard the sound of beach chairs clanking against each other. The May through October scenario. I ran down to the basement and grabbed my orange Tommy Bahama chair, the newest addition to my collection. Let the season begin! The closest beach to my home is Atlantic Beach, right over the bridge, just minutes from my house. As I was told it would be, the gate was open. Yay! Unfortunately, my idea was hardly original. There was not a parking

I finally decided to travel one small town over to Long Beach. The town was larger, the strip longer and there were many more beach options. Once again the parking spots were non-existent. At Atlantic Beach you drove east/west to look for a spot. In Long Beach you went north/south up the small neighborhood streets named for U.S. states. North, south, east, west. It didní t matter. There were no openings for my CRV in any direction. When I finally found a parking space that was not too far out of town and trekked to the beach, I was shocked to see two young teens posted at the entrance. ì Beach pass?î they demanded. ì Ití s not July 4th yet!î (the official start of the season), I responded. They just shrugged. New rule. The season now started Memorial Day. They must be kidding. They were not. I was fast losing my enthusiasm and decided to at least do the errand part of my excursion. And then I remembered that in my desire to down-size I hadní t taken my wallet with all my receipts in it. Okay. Time to recalculate, again. My friend and I had planned on going to the town of Long Beach this month to purchase beach passes. As Long Island residents but not Long Beach dwellers, we received a discounted rate for the season. Weí ve done it twice before and since we are beach lovers, our investment was well worth it. I had no idea if they were open on Sundays or if they took credit cards but since I was out and there wasní t much pulling me back home I drove the few miles to the booth. To my delight they were both open and took credit cards. Since it was nearly two thirty by now, when I drove back to the beach area I found a great spot right near the entrance. Of course by this time the heat of the day and come and gone and a slight wind had picked up. But I was getting onto that beach no matter what. I donned my sweater, unloaded my gear once again and happily made my way onto the lovely sand to an Continued on page 117

Computers One on One
Back to school with the appropriate computer!
by Shuly Rubel
As my son is preparing to go to Israel for his post high school learning year, he mentioned to me that he would like to take a laptop with him to take notes - in English and in Hebrew. He also wanted to be able to listen to DVDs. So I decided to do some research on what would be beneficial for him to take - a laptop or a tablet? I know that ì Back to Schoolî preparations can create anxiety in most homes. Purchasing a computer plays an important role in our back to school preparations. I can alleviate some anxiety in your home by offering some pros and cons about a laptop versus the tablet. The first question you have to ask yourself and your children is: What do they need to use the computer for? Will they be doing research? Will they be using a word processor in English and Hebrew? Will they need other applications? For example, Excel or power point? Before shopping for a computer, you should check with the school your child will be attending regarding any recommendations, requirements or restrictions there may be on student computers. Colleges and schools will have recommended minimum computer specifications. They may have a list of necessary applications that require specific hardware. All of this information will be very helpful during your shopping process. What are the pros and cons of tablet PC versus laptop? The following is a list of differences between tablet PCs and laptops. See how they compare to one another and which of the two will be a better choice for you. Input Method The most obvious difference between a tablet PC and a laptop is the lack of a keyboard. Tablets rely solely on a touch interface on the
42
SUMMER 2013, Esra
screen for all input. This is fine when it involves mainly pointing, dragging or tapping to navigate around a program. The problems surface when you have to input text into a program, such as in an email or document. Since they have no keyboard, users are required to type on virtual keyboards that have varying layouts and designs. Most people cannot type as quickly or as accurately on a virtual keyboard. Users do have the option of adding an external Bluetooth keyboard to most tablets to make this more like a laptop but it adds costs and peripherals that must be taken in with the tablet. Laptops are for those that write a lot, tablets for those that do more point interaction. Size This is probably the biggest reason to go with a tablet PC compared to a laptop. Tablets have the size roughly of a small pad of paper and a weight of under two pounds. Most laptops are far larger and heavier. Even one of the smallest ultra-portables, the Apple MacBook Air 11, weighs just over two pounds and has a profile that is larger than an iPad 2. The main reason for this is the keyboard and trackpad which require it to be larger. Add in more powerful components that require additional cooling and power, and they get even larger. Because of this, it is much easier to carry around a tablet than a laptop, especially when traveling. Battery Life Tablets are designed for efficiency because of the low power requirements of their hardware components. The majority of the interior of a tablet is taken up by the battery. In comparison, laptops use more powerful hardware. The battery component of the laptop is a far smaller percentage of the laptopí s internal components. Thus, even with the higher capacity battery of laptops, they do not run as long as a tablet. Many of the tablets right now can run up to ten hours of web usage before requiring a charge. The average laptop would only run for roughly three to four hours with a few systems able to stretch it out to eight, still less than a tablet. This means that tablets can achieve all day usage, which few laptops can achieve.

Fish Plate By: Rachel Rosenberg
S
ummer is finally here, and after a long day out in the sun my family is hot, tired and ravenous. While the 5 Towns in Long Island has its share of fast food options, including pizza, Chinese and plenty of fried chicken poppers; the most recent addition, Fish Plate strives to bring a lighter, fresher and healthier option. Fish Plate is modeled after my favorite Los Angeles chain of restaurants, Fish Grill. So when I herded my weary crew into Fish Plate on Cedarhurst Avenue, I had high expectations. I took my familyí s orders of fried fish, fish chowder, fish poppers, fish tacos, salad with grilled fish and more and stepped up to the counter to place our order. Fish Plate gets points for understanding the meaning of fast food. The friendly cashier quickly entered my large order and handed me a receipt with our order number. Within minutes our number was being called and food began arriving at our table. The fish poppers were attractive round spheres with a breaded crunchy exterior and a spicy, flaky, smoking hot center, served with a spicy dipping sauce. I didní t taste any fish though and it certainly wasní t in keeping with the light and fresh theme. The fish sticks, while also breaded and fried, were strips of actual non-processed fresh tilapia and I was happy to see two of my sons gobble theirs up. My husband and I both had the Chesapeake fish chowder and it was so comforting, I could have eaten bowls of it. The chowder was warm and creamy with pieces of carrots, chopped onions and chunks of white fish.
56
SUMMER 2013, Esra
We sampled the grilled salmon, grilled tilapia and crispy fish tacos. The corn tortillas were warm and you could see and taste the grill marks on them, but they crumbled under all the salsa and Malibu ranch dressing piled on. I would suggest asking for the salsa and sauce on the side, but Ií m not sure if they would accommodate this request because it would then become apparent that there are only two tiny pieces of fish in each taco. The price was right on the tacos from $3.99 to $5.99 but I would prefer if they charged more and doubled on the fish. The Malibu salad included a similar ranch sauce and salsa to the tacos, ladled over romaine lettuce with chopped red onions, cucumbers, craisins and crispy tortilla strips. The salad was fresh and the portion was large. The grilled tuna we ordered with the salad was over-cooked but perhaps I should have specified rare. Overall, the salad was better and fresher than I could receive in any of the other fast food joints in town. Fish Plate also carries a selection of nonfish options including pasta, fries and baked potatoes, but if you doní t like fish, this place isní t for you. I was glad to see the restaurant was busy with a steady stream of customers lining up for take-out orders and eating in. The staff didní t lose their smiles and the lines kept moving. The space doesní t accommodate many tables but people ate quickly and the tables were immediately cleaned. At the end of our fish feast my boys wanted dessert and the menu listed pastry, frozen yogurt and fresh fruit. However, it seems Fish Plate is still in its early opening stage and they do not yet carry frozen yogurt or fruit. The pastry option was one started carrot cake which didní t appeal to anyone. GRIN AND BARE IT Who was your favorite teacher throughout all your school years and why? Prof. Smadar Rosenzweig. She taught tanach at Touro and she made it fun and interesting. I truly enjoyed learning with her. S.W. Unfortunately, I only remember the ones I didní t like and there are too many to mention. C.M. I loved my first grade teacher, Mrs. Dalton. She taught us how to read. She opened up a whole new world for me. S.F.

Interestingly enough, my best teacher was also my worst. My sixth grade teacher was a superb educator - I still retain much of what he taught through sophisticated and challenging assignments, which were way beyond what the average sixth-grader learns. However, he was extremely strict and mean, and was downright scary when he was angry. Luckily I survived sixth grade unscathed and am still reaping the benefit of Mr. Zimlerí s teaching prowess. I.M. Esther Schoenfeld in the 60í s was the high school of choice for hard working girls. In 9th grade geography, Mr. Ginsberg was the teacher who opened the whole wide world for us yeshiva girls. He taught us to appreciate differences and tolerance. He inspired me to be a teacher just like him. B.D. Her name was Ms. Mcnutt (really!). She taught chemistry in high school in Maryland. She was a great feminine role model. She had bright red hair, always wore makeup, heels, dressed tastefully and fashionably. She was one of the first females accepted into Yale University. She was smart, funny and a good teacher. Besides chem she taught me you doní t have to play like a man to be successful. You can be yourself just be your best self!! B.C. My senior moments of long term memory arení t working. I caní t rememberÖ S.M.

Continued from page 108 I would have to say all of them because they put up with my shtick and still I graduated. I really was an ì outstandingî student. Hope my grandchildren doní t read this. E.W. I had a great teacher in 5th grade - Ms. Stenlauf. She was young, energetic and really tried to make us think for ourselves. She arranged the desks in our class differently and always kept us on our toes. Ití s almost 40 years later and I still remember her vividly. D.R. Mrs. Gottlieb, my dikduk teacher. I remember everything I learned in her class. D.H. One of my most favorite teachers was Morah Chaya Schlagbaum aî h, our Hebrew teacher in Shulamit School for Girls. She was sweetness personified. She knew and understood each and every one of us, was ì machshivî us and showered us with much love and affection. I caní t recall her ever raising her voice at us. She was amused, rather than annoyed, at our antics. She sadly left this world at a young age, but left an enormous impact on all of us who were privileged to know her. Tehi Zichra Baruch. H.R. I had a teacher at Brooklyn College by the name of Yaffa Eliach. She taught a course on the Holocaust. She was courageous, smart, sensitive and beautiful inside and out. She spoke about the ugliest times from our history in the gentlest tones and with such clarity and compassion. I felt a tremendous connection and will never forget her. E.M. I have two favorite teachers. One was a male JHS science teacher who praised me for figuring out a question that no one else in class knew and it literally made me interested in Biology for the rest of my life. It also made me think of myself differently. I had a college writing professor who was a secular Israeli. She just pushed me to my writing threshold and I became a much better writer. She took a personal interest and challenged me and it made me a better thinker and writer. L.M.W.

My seventh and eighth grade Chumash teacher. She was very young (only 5 years older than us) and very dynamic. A breath of fresh air after the older women who had taught us all through elementary school. T.B. I caní t think of a favorite, only least favorites, but my kids had Mrs. Mullins in HALB for English. They all agree that they learned more about writing in her class than all their combined years of schooling. Years later they still talk about her valuable lessons. B.H.

Wish I could remember that far back! Was too busy cutting class and eating plattentorte! L.E. I had an Art History professor in Brooklyn College who was male and European. Continued from page 42 Solid Storage Capacity In order to keep their size and costs down, tablet PCs have had to rely on new solid state storage memory as a means to store programs and data. While these have the potential for faster access and low power usage, they have one major disadvantage in the amount of files they can store. Most tablets come with configurations that allow between 16 and 64 gigabytes of storage. By comparison, most laptops still use traditional hard drives that hold far much more. Performance Since most tablet PCs are based on extremely low powered processors, they will generally fall behind a laptop when it comes to computing tasks. Of course, a lot of this will depend on how the tablet or laptop is being used. For tasks like email, web browsing, playing video or audio, both platforms will typically work just as well as neither requires much performance. Things get more complicated once you start doing more demanding tasks. For the most part, multitasking or graphics performance is typically better suited for a laptop. However, take for instance, video editing. One would assume that this would always be in the laptopĂ s favor, but a recent test of video editing on the iPad 2 with iMovie found its specialized video hardware actually provided higher performance than doing the same task with iMovie on a MacBook Pro. Software The software that runs on a laptop or tablet can be vastly different in terms of capabilities. Now if the tablet PC is running Windows 7, it can theoretically run the same software as a laptop but will likely be slower. This can make it easy to use it as a primary laptop using the same software used in a work environment. Both of these require applications specific to their operating systems. There are tons of programs available for each of these and many will do most of the basic tasks that a laptop can do. The problem is the lack of the input devices and hardware performance in the tablet.
116
SUMMER 2013, Esra
Cost The average starting price for a tablet PC is around $499. By comparison, there are laptop computers that can be found for as little as $300 to $400. Laptops still have the advantage over tablets if you look at equivalent performance and features. Netbooks start below $300 but can generally handle all the same tasks as a tablet, but in a more difficult to carry and use format. Stand Alone Device This category is describing a situation where a tablet PC would be your only computer system. It isnĂ t something that many people would necessarily think about when looking at the devices but it is critical. A laptop is a fully self contained system that one can use as a computer system in terms of loading data and programs onto and backing up. Many tablet PCs actually require an additional computer system beyond the tablet for backing up the device or even activating it. The iPad 2 is a good example of this as the first thing a user is required to do is hook it up to a PC to activate it. Now, one could do this on another personĂ s computer but you still have the problem of backing up data, especially if you want to temporarily remove an application if you have limited space. Conclusion Laptops still offer a greater level of flexibility when it comes to mobile computing. They may not have the same level of portability, running times or ease of use of a tablet but there are a number of issues that tablets need to resolve before they become the main means of mobile computing. Over time, many of these issues will likely be resolved. If you already have a desktop computer, then a tablet PC may be an option if you use it mainly for entertainment and web usage. If your purchase is of a primary computer, then a laptop is definitely the way to go. So what did I do? I bought my son a Dell Laptop at Costco at the low price of $499, which already included Microsoft Office installed. This was exactly what he needed to take with him to Israel. Logging off! Continued from page 16 empty area. I took out my pad and began writing this piece. I wrote a little, sipped some iced tea, looked out onto the vast and beautiful ocean and closed my eyes. As it wasní t as warm as I had hoped and as Ií d drunk a little too much iced tea and there were no restrooms around, and as I had whiled away half the afternoon looking for a parking spot, I didní t stay as long as I had planned. But it was enough. Enough to remind me that summer would eventually get here. Since this is our summer issue this article really should be about back-to-school. But I just got my beach pass. I havení t even peeled my sweater off yet. Ití s hard to think about getting back to school when most schools havení t even let out yet. I know by the time you read this summer will be half over and with the holidays coming so early you probably will already be thinking about backto-school. But for now, if you doní t mind, letí s just relax a little and enjoy the sun.
