ast Thursday my husband texted me from work that his cousin’s young son from out of town was coming to our neighborhood for the weekend and needed a place to stay for Shabbos. He asked if he could sleep at our house. Frequently we have several bedrooms available and there is plenty of room. This time, however, I was having my mom over as well as friends from Brooklyn whose children and grandchildren had moved in with them “temporarily.” I had offered them a little respite at our home and was looking forward to spending time with them. I told my husband that unfortunately, we didn’t have room this weekend but he was surprised. Since my mother sleeps on the first floor there are still two bedrooms open on the second floor. I reminded him that the very small extra room was already packed with two cribs and the couch, which turns into a bed, could not possibly be opened. What about the other option, which was my younger daughter’s room and accommodates an open hi-riser just fine? Alas, I was in the midst of a huge reorganization project and had clothing piles, full gar-

12

bage bags and large storage containers spread out everywhere. I am forever either searching for stored kids’ clothing in the next size for a grandchild who is outgrowing his or her current garb or looking for a place to keep a new load that was just deposited in my front hall. Both my children are in apartments, so I get it. There is no room for any extras. Bringing their stuff back home makes sense. I do have a lot more room. However, my house has become the storage center – or should I say the dumping ground – for just about everything! First, there are all the things my girls never took with them when they wed. Clothing, textbooks, ice skates, sports equipment, photo albums and on and on. Again, I understand. Their small apartments have such limited space and they have their own newly married related possessions they want to keep and display. Every once in a while, though, I implore them to go through a drawer, a book shelf, a closet and perhaps get rid of some of the accumulated stuff. Somehow even when they do I seem

Continued from page 12 to be left with more than I started out with when they are done. (Kind of like the pasta dish that keeps growing no matter how many people partake thereof.) Next there are the gifts. Engagements gifts, wedding gifts, baby gifts. Some are things they can’t use but could not return, some are things they do like and plan on using – someday – but not now, thanks. Some are things they love and would take but are way too big to keep in their humble abodes. One example is the magnificent, ornate three part cake plate my younger daughter received as a wedding present. Even I have nowhere to put it. For the last three years it has sat on my office desk in the basement taking up the entire surface making the

14

space unusable for anything else. Since it is mostly glass I keep it in lots of bubble wrap so its size is enormous. Another example is the house of balls my grandchildren love to jump around in or the many large riding toys they were given. Oh, they enjoy them all and can spend hours playing on them. When they are at my house, of course. And then there are the sacks of children’s clothes. Not just clothes but diapers and snowsuits and stroller inserts and covers. There are the Purim costumes and boppies and floppies and bouncers and . . . well, you get the picture. Oh, and did I mention strollers? Singles and doubles in multiples.

Continued from page 14 Now don’t get me wrong. All this represents tremendous joy in my life and I am so grateful. However, the theme of this issue is Home Décor and it’s been a long time since I’ve added any new décor elements to my home that didn’t have wheels or was made of bright, colored plastic. I guess there is a time and place for everything. I did spend many years perusing antique and thrift shops and furnishing my home with many an ESRA advertiser’s wares. Now I have the blessing of being in a different mode. If you are like me and are in the midst of the storage years in your life, just grin and bare it and know that it

16

all is part of the wonderful chaos of family life. If you are pre or post this period and are in the home decorating stage, enjoy! Our issue is filled with countless home décor options – from designing a kitchen from scratch, to re-furnishing a new living room or den, to filling in with carpet, wallpaper or great accent pieces. As they say, at any stage, it’s all good! P.S. The young cousin slept on a hospital bed (yes, we have that too!), in the basement with all the games, toys and exercise equipment. He didn’t seem to mind.

MIND OVER MATTER: Collecting versus Hoarding

S

Robin Daar, LCSW

orry to bring up the topic of cleaning out the basement but do you remember when you last did that? If the answer is “recently,” then good for you because you’re done with it. If the answer is “I need to get to that,” my condolences because I know how tedious that can be. The one thing I do love about cleaning out my Sbasement ALES (feel free to replace it with other words such as garage, attic, entire house..), is the feeling I get when I de-clutter. I feel accomplished, free and, well. . . clean. Taking on such a huge cleaning project is complicated. In addition to how difficult it is to fight the urge to avoid cleaning, for many people it can be a very challenging and painful experience. These people thrive on collecting things and that makes it difficult for them to separate.

People who hold onto things generally fall into two categories. The first category is those who have a sentimental attachment to their possessions. These are objects that they hold on to because they like to be reminded of a period or event in their lives that they simply can’t let go of. These are things that may have no value to the rest of us but are very valuable to them. Most of us fall into this category. We have all collected things over our lifetimes that remind us of vacations we’ve taken, people we’ve known or experiences we’ve had. Some of these things may be tossed to the side or hidden in piles in the garage but when unearthed still may be difficult to part with. The article “What is nostalgia good for?” from BBC news, discusses a recent report from the financial services firm Standard Life regarding the book “Get It together” by Damian Barr and research conducted by psychologist Clay Routledge at North Dakota State University that may provide insight into why we accumulate so many sentimental items and have difficulty getting rid of them. “Most of the days are often filled with routine activities that aren’t particularly significant – shopping for groceries, commuting to work and so forth” says Mr. Routledge. (718) 234-3121 “Nostalgia is a way for us to tap into past experiences that we have that are quite meaningful to remind us that our lives have worth that we are people of value, that we have good relationships that we are happy and that life has some sense of purpose and meaning”. There's Neverwas A "Better" Time Toa Start Once nostalgia considered “sickness.” Taking Care Of Yourself The words were derived from the Greek words nostros (return) and algos (pain). It was beINDIVIDUALIZED lieved to be suffering due to SESSIONS a desire to return to your place or origin. FOR WOMEN Today nostalgia is considered “good psychological medicine” with many positive benefits. Nostalgia is usually involuntarily triggered by negative feelings most commonly loneliness – against which it acts as a sort of natural antide* Thai Yoga Massage pressant. (Of course there is a whole category Prenatal of *people for whom nostalgia is harmful, ie: people with trauma in their pasts). *The Trauma Sensitive Yoga second category of people for whom cleaning would take an emotional toll are those who can’t throw anything out, “hoarders.” This category is a whole different animal. Hoarding isDevorah a “pattern of behavior that is characterized by excessive acquisition of possessions and an 516-320-9917 inability to discard anything.” It is a mental illness listed in the DSM that requires much therapy and psychotropic intervention. devorahyaffe@yahoo.com Hoarding is about the fear of throwing Cedarhurst something away that you might need someday,

• 4 tsp sun-dried tomato paste or tomato puree • 8 basil leaves • salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 cloves garlic peeled and crushed • 1 egg, for coating • 8 tbsp breadcrumbs or medium matza meal

• 14 oz button mushrooms, stalks removed • 9 oz Israeli couscous • 1 pint vegetable stock (mushroom is good) • 2 large zucchini, coarsely grated • large bunch of fresh parsley, roughly chopped • Garnish: 1 lemon, cut into wedges Delicate fish like sole is best served as simply as possible without fussy creamy sauces. This recipe is pleasantly seasoned with lemon and garlic and makes a lavish piece of fish go a long way. The fish can be prepared in advance and cooked just before your guests arrive, making it a hostess’s delight. I like to serve this with Israeli couscous – a type of toasted pasta – which provides the perfect texture to accompany the fish. It is extremely versatile and is delicious hot, cold or warm. Due to its round nature, my family call it ‘bubbles’. Method: • Mix together the olive oil, garlic, lemon zest and juice, salt and pepper. • Pour this marinade over the sole fillets and leave covered for 30 minutes in the refrigerator. • Roll up each sole fillet like a Swiss roll and carefully thread onto the kebab skewers alternately with the pepper pieces and mushrooms. • Brush each threaded kebab with a little of the lemon and oil marinade. • Arrange the kebab skewers on a grill tray and cook under a moderately hot grill or broiler for about 8 minutes, carefully turning the kebabs once or twice during cooking and brushing them with the remaining marinade if required. • While the kebabs are cooking, cook the Israeli couscous. Pour hot stock over it and bring to the boil. • Cook for 10 minutes or until soft. Stir in the zucchini and cook for another 3 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning accordingly. Add the parsley. To serve the stylish way: Spoon a generous helping of couscous onto a hot plate. Top with the kebabs. Garnish with lemon wedges and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.

Italian Chicken Spirals Info • Preparation fine: 25 minutes • Cooking Time: 45 minutes • Serves: 4 Ingredients: • 1 eggplant; cut lengthways into 4 thin slices • 6 tbsp olive oil • 2 red peppers, cut in half and deseeded • 4 chicken breasts, skinned

For the basil dressing • 3 oz pine nuts • large bunch of fresh basil, at least 1oz / 2 tbsp • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and roughly chopped • 3 1/2 fl oz olive oil • Garnish: 4 cherry tomatoes, sliced, sprigs of basil This recipe transforms a simple chicken breast into a delicious wrap of eggplant, peppers, basil and tomatoes: the flavours of Italy. It can be prepared in advance and cooked at a later stage. To continue the Italian theme serve with a basil dressing, Method: • Pre-heat the grill to its highest setting. • Place the eggplant slices on a baking tray. Drizzle over 3 tbsp of the olive oil and grill or broil for 5 minutes on each side or until golden. • Place the red peppers on a tray. Drizzle over 1 tbsp of the olive oil. Grill or broil until blackened. This will take 5-8 minutes. Remove and transfer to a dish and cover with cling wrap. Leave for 10 minutes and then remove the skin. • Place the chicken breasts between two pieces of nonstick parchment paper. Flatten them by gently bashing with a rolling pin until they are evenly 1 inch thick. • Pre-heat the oven to 400°F • Spread each chicken breast with sun-dried tomato paste, then an eggplant slice, then half a red pepper, top with a few basil leaves and a sprinkling of salt, pepper and crushed garlic. • Roll up firmly and secure with a cocktail stick. Brush with a little beaten egg and sprinkle with breadcrumbs or matza meal. • Heat the remaining 2 tbsp of olive oil. Saute the chicken breasts for about 3 minutes on each side or until golden. • Place the spirals on a baking tray. • Cook for 25-30 minutes or until thoroughly cooked. • To make the dressing, roast the pine nuts in a dry frying pan for 2-3 minutes. They will cook fast so keep an eye on them. Remove immediately and transfer to another dish. • Place the pine nuts, basil and garlic in a food processor. Blitz together into a paste. Gradually add the olive oil and season with sail and pepper to taste. To serve the stylish way: Place the chicken spirals on a warmed plate. Remove the cocktail sticks. Drizzle over some basil dressing and garnish with sliced cherry tomatoes and sprigs of basil.

Continued from page 30 of not being able to remember it perfectly or that if it gets thrown away something bad may happen. As mentioned earlier many of us save things but with hoarding the accumulation of material things creates a discomfort that may disrupt their lives on all levels. The reasons people hoard are different and yet are closely linked: 1. Sentimental value may be a reason to hoard. One would think that there would be value and purpose in things that are hoarded but often the value and use is not something we would think of. Misconception: If I discard this item I discard a piece of myself. 2. Decision making. Hoarders have a very difficult time making decisions since they fear that they might throw out something important they end up never throwing anything out, thereby not having to make a decision. Misconception: If I throw something out I will be making the wrong choice. 3. Organizing. Hoarders are incapable of organizing their objects and storing them in any logical order. Hoarders find logic in the chaos they create. To the hoarder this is how he creates some sense of order and control in his life. Misconception: The moment I am unable to categorize an object I will place it in sight so I know where it is. 4. Forgetting/perfection. Because of the inability to remember everything and how everything looks and feels the hoarder keeps things within arm’s reach. Misconception: The minute I throw something away I will forgot its content and how it looked and it will be gone forever. 5. Letting go of things. Hoarders have a fear of letting go of things which represent their having to move on in life, grow up and eventually die. The items become who they are therefore the giving of them away would be letting go of themselves. Misconception: The moment you throw something away you let go of that specific part of your life however insignificant it may be. How does hoarding get treated? Studies have shown that the frontal brains of hoarders works differently than the brains of others. No amount of yelling or shaming will make a hoarder stop. A treatment approach for hoarding is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This treatment teaches them to see their objects in a new light. It challenges the hoarder’s thoughts and beliefs about the need to keep items and about collecting new things. In conjunction with talk therapy there are also medications available for the treatment of hoarding.

Finding and joining a support group or working with a coach to control clutter is vital to help a hoarder get his life back in order. Hoarders also often become isolated from their families because of their behaviors. Just when they need family support they may not have it. This is why educating the family about their family member’s illness is crucial to their improvement. For those hoarders who don’t seek out help (the majority), and for whom changing is very difficult there is an approach called “harm reduction”. This approach helps hoarders to live lives that may not be uncluttered but that are safe for them and their community. So collect all you want as long as the items are useful or things you can be proud of. As mentioned earlier in the article collecting can actually be therapeutic. Remember however, that the therapeutic benefits end when the collecting becomes disorganized clutter that is compulsive and that you can’t make sense of or let go of. Be aware once your collection seem to take on a life of its own that you need to step back and take a good look at yourself.
