Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: THE SURF ROOM

By: Rachel Rosenberg

I

’d like to preface this article with an apology to any restaurant I have previously reviewed with a less than stellar evaluation. It was brought to my attention that this is not the correct forum for my critical eye, which found room for improvement in every restaurant I reviewed. The restaurant industry is a tough one and kosher dining even more so. I’m thrilled with the opening of every new kosher restaurant and saddened by any closing. Going forward, I will only be highlighting the attributes of these fabulous restaurants and hope that any criticism in my prior reviews are forgiven. That said, I recently visited The Surf Room, a new restaurant that opened in the newly renovated Long Beach Hotel, and I loved it. As this issue focuses on children, this restaurant is going to be a great place to take the kids this summer. While it is extremely upscale in price, ambiance and food, the set-up makes for a great day at the seashore followed by a gourmet dinner.

The restaurant is spacious with low tables and couches at the windows overlooking the beach and larger round tables for dinner. The tables were covered with white leather tablecloths and the chairs were white with a rustic beachy feel. The smaller tables are going to be great for sitting and nibbling on chicken skewers, bruschetta or Mediterranean sliders, just a few of the items on the restaurant’s special “Lounge Menu.” The Surf Room also has a large selection of wines and a very creative Cocktail Menu, which includes Red Wine Sangria, Pomegranate Margarita and the cocktail I tried, a Strawberry and Basil Amore. The drink was refreshing with fragrant pieces of basil floating with a few small chunks of strawberries. After we ordered our drinks, the friendly waitress brought us some toasted pita wedges with a mezze of dips, including matbucha, a creamy hummus and deliciously salty olive tapenade. For our appetizers we tried the Floridian Grouper Cake and Spring Roll. I love a good fish cake so I could not resist trying this even though it was plated over a banana avocado salad and I usually stay away from bananas. The grouper cake itself was flavorful and hearty. The spring roll, although deep fried, had a light feel as it was filled with avocado and cilantro. It was served with a spicy mayonnaise dipping sauce. We sampled the Surf salad which consisted of finely chopped romaine lettuce, tomatoes, avocado and shredded coconut, lightly dressed with a lime vinaigrette. The ingredients were fresh even though we were there on a cold winter night in the early days of the restaurant’s opening. The Entrees on the dinner menu are a la carte and side dishes need to be ordered separately. We tried the Atlantic Salmon, Veal Chop and a side of garlic mashed potatoes. The salmon was moist and was covered with Mediterranean flavored chopped tomatoes, garlic, basil and olives. The plate arrived with a delicately and creatively sliced lemon wedge. I ordered the veal chop medium and it was perfectly crispy on the outside with a nice pink center. It was served with a sprig of rosemary and a spiced and roasted tomato wedge. I enjoyed every bite of this veal chop and probably would have been full without the side. The mashed potatoes were creamy goodness with a crispy onion ring as a garnish. After polishing off this incredible dinner, we still had room for dessert. The sorbet lollipops were the ideal finish. There were three tart flavors, lemon, mango and raspberry sorbet spheres covered with white chocolate. While I had a relaxing long dinner with adults at the Surf Room, I can’t wait to return in the summer with my kids who would love to munch on the Lounge Menu’s French Fries after a day in the sun. MIND OVER MATTER:

The Importance of the Bond Between Grandchild and Grandparent By Robin Daar, LCSW, RN

S

cience has come a long way (thank G-d). We see amazing advances on a regular basis. Some of these advances have helped us to live longer and fuller lives. When I was growing up adults who had grandparents were rare and great grandparents were almost unheard of. Today that is not the case. We are so blessed to have these relationships in our lives – relationships which can enhance our lives and that of our children in ways we don’t even realize. Grandparents play many different roles in the lives of their grandchildren. And they are important ones. They can be loving companions, caregivers, role models, mentors, historians and the source of various other forms of support. Research by Jeremy Yorgason and Laura Padilla Walker of the BYU Department of Family Life, show that grandparents have an effect on children’s social behaviors. It indicates that when grandparents are involved in the daily lives of their grandchildren the children tend to be more social and more involved in school. The research also showed that these children tend to be more compassionate toward people outside their immediate friends and family circles. One reason for this may be that having regular contact with an adult outside of the immediate family develops pro-social skills. Another reason is that nonresidential grandparents take on a role that encourages positive development rather than disciplining, negative behavior. Just as grandchildren can benefit from relationships with grandparents so do their parents. When grandparents can emotionally support or financially help their children (and grandchildren), parents are less occupied and have more time to devote to helping their children with homework and simply spending more quality time with them. According to Yorgason “grandparents are like the national guard. If there is a problem they come in and help out.” Yorgason feels that with their grandparents, grandchildren always know there is someone in their lives to turn to for support. The study by Yorgason and Walker also shows “the emotional relationship between grandparents and grandchildren can significantly affect the child’s academic, psychological and social development. It has been shown that children have a higher level of self confidence when grandparents give them more affection.

48

Such emotional closeness has long term positive impact on children’s lives including the value children derive from giving and receiving care from another person.” Other benefits of the relationship include grandparents being an additional venue for learning values and good manners. If the relationship is ongoing and strong, grandparents can inculcate in the children’s subconscious responsibility for the elderly and authority. Children – especially adolescents – are more comfortable confiding in their grandparents, feeling more pampered and less judged by them. Now how do grandchildren impact the lives of their grandparents? Parents invest so much time and energy while raising their children that sometimes they lose themselves. As children grow, parents can start spending time taking care of themselves at which point they may find they miss the nurturing and taking care of a child. Grandparents will tell you that they are much calmer at this point in their lives since they’ve learned to “not to sweat the small things” and that as a result time spent with their grandchildren can be very special. Grandchildren give grandparents the opportunity to feel needed, wanted and valuable in that area of their lives again. Grandchildren also give grandparents the opportunity to share knowledge and skills with them which they did not have the time to share when they were raising their own children. Grown grandchildren can have a significant impact on their elderly grandparents as well. When a grown grandchild takes the time to visit, talk with and just plain “hang out” with a grandparent it is a beautiful thing. This relationship with a grown grandchild can make them feel more alive, vital and young. Findings show that it is important for grandchildren to help their elderly grandparents remain independent and maintain a two way supportive relationship. This relationship can ward off the detrimental effects of aging on the mental and emotional well being of the older adult. What can parents do to strengthen the relationship between their children and their parents and ensure an ongoing relationship for years to come? 1. Model for your children a respectful healthy relationship with your parents. 2. Have children call their grandparents regularly and visit when possible. 3. Encourage children to share their current lives with them including the “ups and downs”. 4. Teach them to have intelligent conversations with them and remind them they can learn a lot from them. 5. Encourage children to have a relationship with their grandparents independent of their parents. And grandparents? 1. Call your grandchildren and show an interest in things that are important to them. 2. Find something you have in common with your grandchild and nurture it. 3. Share stories about your family history – especially

MARCH 2015, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

On a recent weekend my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter came to visit. My husband and I happily watched the little one for several hours while her parents went out. The weather outside was frigid so we stayed indoors. Our first stop was into the den where she proceeded to up end and unload the canvas bag. She examined each item that rolled out but within minutes had exhausted the large collection. Then we sat for a while at the piano where she banged out a few bars on our outof-tune upright. Next we visited the basement with its overwhelming supply of baby stuff where I thought she would be busy for the duration of the afternoon. She colored on an over-sized coloring book, spun an assortment of plastic dreidles that for some reason were still around, climbed in and out of the collapsible Sesame Street house filled with colorful balls and managed to get me to give her an hour-long ride in a pink plastic car. She was raring to go but I was exhausted. Up the steps she climbed again looking for a new source of entertainment. I sat down for a moment on my living room club chair to regroup and pulled her onto my lap. She was about to squirm off when she noticed that the small occasional table next to us had something interesting. Her little fingers quickly hooked around a brass pull and out slid a silk-lined decorative drawer I had totally forgotten about. To her delight she discovered five little Limoge miniature boxes inside, each opening to a pretty, delicate hand-painted picture inside. Must have been another collection I once started and then abandoned. Well, we were set for the rest of the afternoon. Forget the musical games, the riding toys, the kidsized kitchen paraphernalia. Opening and closing the living room table drawer, pulling out the Limoge boxes one by one, lifting the lids, examining the painting, closing them and putting them back into the drawer and sliding the drawer shut only to begin the routine again was our activity for the duration of the day. She was thrilled and I was sitting comfortably. We were both content. My mother always said as children we preferred to play with the boxes things came in rather than the items themselves – even if the items were meant for us. Go figure. Children always keep you guessing. May the children in your life keep you young and bring you much joy and blessing.
