friend sent out an email last week asking if anyone had extra magazines, fabric, novelties and notions and any other “stuff” that could be useful for a scrapbook project she was doing with a special needs children’s group with which she is involved. I had just dropped off at my sister’s house months worth of magazines I had collected from various locations throughout my home so, unfortunately, I could not help her on that front. I started to respond to her email with an apology and an explanation that she had just “missed the boat.” Had she only asked me a week earlier I would have had bags worth of publications to donate to her cause. But then I thought about the other portion of her request – for fabric, novelties, notions and “stuff.” A vision popped into my head of something I hadn’t thought about in years – maybe even over a decade. Three blue-lidded giant Tuppperware-type storage boxes in the upstairs cedar closet. My project boxes. Wow, I have not reached for those containers since my kids were, well, kids – probably

in grade school. I am not a hoarder by nature. I can be relentless when going through wardrobes, tossing the contents of medicine cabinets or refrigerator back-of-shelf unidentifiable objects, when going through piles of newspaper, magazines, mail. I never liked clutter and as I got older my intolerance for it increased. But I do love anything crafty and creative. I used to save every broken piece of jewelry, buttons from discard-able clothing, ribbons, confetti, leftover material, pretty greeting cards, extra Purim tzotchkas and anything else that could some day find itself useful in a project I could be working on. For years when my daughters had school assignments which required being a little creative I would bring down those boxes and the three of us would delight in going through their haphazard but appealing contents. When I was in my super shalach manos days of giving the packages much thought

Any leftover supplies from themed creations went right back into the boxes. You never knew what you would find in there but it was always a delightful experience. It’s funny how you can not use something for years but the minute someone else wants it it suddenly becomes dear and hard to part with. You know how they say if you haven’t worn a piece of cloth-

ing in three years chances are you’re never going to wear it? Well I could certainly apply the same line of thought to my craft boxes. If I didn’t need to pull them down and make use of something from within them in over ten years I surely didn’t need them anymore. That was my attitude when I climbed up to the second floor and into the furthermost bedroom. The cedar closet was packed with stored items – from baby clothing to adult garb, suitcases, garment bags and other seldom used items. On a high shelf to the

By Jennifer Mann, LCSW

urim is a holiday when the creatively challenged and those for whom time is not on their side, hang our heads in shame as the beautiful mishloach manot begin to grace our dining room tables. I’ll be the first to admit it. I have Purim Envy. PURIM ENVY: an uneasy, sometimes jealous emotion that overtakes an individual when she lays her eyes upon her neighbor’s grand Purim theme uniting baskets and costumes. I also will be the first to admit that in the past I have experienced outright Purim Dread. PURIM DREAD: the contemplation of hanging a banner on your door on Purim which reads: “Gone Fishin.” Every year I tell myself to get organized and get it done before the masses take over Amazing Savings and the supermarkets. One year I was in Amazing Savings getting ready for Chanukah when I ran into an acquaintance who was getting a head start on Purim! My jaw dropped as I marveled at her ability to be so on top of her game. And then of course my thoughts turned to, “What is wrong with me?” I am grateful when I have everyone bathed, a hot meal to serve for dinner and homework is packed up for the next day. I wasn’t always so dreadfully low on my Purim game. My first Purim as a pregnant woman, I went to painstaking lengths to create the perfect mishloach manot to announce my pregnancy. I bought “Baby Ruth” chocolates, baby rattle candies, baby corn, baby books (what else was in that masterpiece? I can’t remember anymore) and the piece d’resistance was a note written in blue and pink explaining each item and announcing the joyous news. Even a baby or two later, I still managed to find the time to entertain my creativity and indulge my Purim flair. One year I did a movie theater theme complete with popcorn buckets, cans of soda, popcorn, candy bars, movie tickets, and of course that note explaining every item and relating it to my theme. Fast forward a few years, graduate school, a few more kids, and a career and I’m begging my older children to throw some candy in a bag for me and call it a day. But the truth is as parents we are responsible for creating the atmosphere and ambiance of the holidays for our children. As with all our beautiful Jewish holidays, the often unspoken underbelly is the incredible amount of work that falls on the women to make the holiday a success. Purim is no exception. Making sure each child has a costume (either hand-made or store bought) she likes, buying the materials and supplies for mishloach manot, cooking for the seudah… and who can forget the schlepping? The Purim day schlepping and delivering of the mishloach manot. We can easily get lost in the stress of the day. And for those parents who are single or have spouses working on Purim, it’s infinitely more difficult.

Continued from page 30 Here is something for us to remember: Our children would much prefer a calm and care-free parent than the “perfect” Purim. How to keep Purim stress at a minimum? 1. You don’t have to win the Purim Blue Ribbon Award. I will not report you to the Purim Police if you do not have a theme this year. Your kids don’t want to match the theme? You wanted everyone to dress up as a different zoo animal and your son insists on being Zuma from Paw Patrol? Let it go. 2. If you really don’t have the time, and lavish mishloach manot wrapping is driving you up the wall, buy some cute boxes. Yes, yours will not be the most beautiful or creative in town, but your children will be happy to have your undivided attention and patience. And 3. This is a personal

32

challenge for me. You do not have to drive your kids to every friend’s house to deliver. If they really want to give mishloach manot to their friends and the school allows it, send in mishloach manot to school and have your child give his friends there. Enjoy the day and get silly with the kids! This year, in an effort to practice what I preach, my focus is going to be on how to have fun and be silly with my kids, instead of getting lost in the details! First stop, Amazing Savings to purchase Silly String for an all-out Silly String War on Purim morning, followed by an illegal number of hamantaschen with my coffee. Wishing you a wonderful and stress-free Purim!

Turmeric Chicken with Sumac and Lime

Date-and-Walnut-Filled Cookies

Serves 4 Chicken thighs are a great answer to the endless Wednesday night “What’s for dinner?” question. They cook fairly quickly and easily, and their rich interplay of fat and skin make them far more enjoyable than the average boneless, skinless, breast. Still, there are only so many versions of salted and roasted thighs I want to eat. For a totally different take on the staple, enter Louisa Shafia’s Turmeric Chicken with Sumac and Lime from The New Persian Kitchen. This super-simple braised dish is bright, tangy, and brilliantly yellow—it’s a far cry from most muddled braised chicken dishes and even further from the typical roasted bird. Suggested tweaks: You could substitute other cuts of chicken here if you’d like, but you’ll likely have to alter the cooking time. Stay away from boneless breasts, however, as they are not good candidates for braising. Shafia suggests using portobello mushroom caps or slabs of firm tofu as vegetarian substitues. INGREDIENTS • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 4 bone-in chicken thighs • 2 tablespoons grapeseed oil • 3/4 cup water • 4 cloves garlic, minced • 2 juicy limes, halved • Sumac, for garnish

Makes about 18 cookies These butter cookies are unmistakably Middle Eastern: Persian Jews make them at Purim. The key to getting the cookies to keep their shape is to refrigerate them until firm after filling and shaping. The combination of gluten-free flours here produces a nutty taste and a light texture, but you can use an equivalent amount of white flour.

DOUGH • l cup unsalted butter or refined coconut oil, at room temperature • 1/3 cup plus 1/2 cup organic cane sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 egg • 3/4 cup fava bean flour • 3/4 cup coconut flour • 1/2 cup tapioca flour • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom • 2 teaspoons baking powder FILLING • 1/2 cup finely chopped walnuts • 1/2 cup Medjool dates, pitted and chopped • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice • 2 tablespoons honey • Pinch of sea salt

DIRECTIONS 1. In a small bowl, mix the turmeric with 1 tablespoon salt and 2 teaspoons pepper. Place the chicken on a rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle with the spice mixture, turning to coat both sides. 2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil. Brown the chicken well on both sides, about 7 minutes per side. Pour in the water, then add the garlic, stirring it into the water. Bring the water to a boil, then turn down the heat to low and cover. Braise the chicken for 25 minutes, until the inside is opaque. Transfer the chicken to a serving platter, turn up the heat to high, and reduce the cooking liquid for a few minutes, stirring occasionally until it’s slightly thickened. Season to taste with salt and pepper, and pour the sauce over the chicken. 3. Dust the chicken with sumac and pepper, garnish with lime halves, and serve. 4. Vegetarian Option: Use whole portobello mushrooms in place of the chicken, or use 1 pound firm tofu, well drained and cut into slabs 1 inch thick. You will need a little extra oil for searing than what is called for in the recipe.

To make the dough, in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar on medium-high speed for about 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla and egg and mix until just combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flours, salt, cardamom, and baking powder. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in two batches, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed. Turn the dough onto a piece of plastic wrap and press it into a disk. Wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours, until firm but still flexible. To make the filling, combine 1/4 cup of the walnuts with the dates, cinnamon, orange juice, honey, and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer uncovered, stirring often, for 5 to 7 minutes, until the mixture forms a thick paste. Transfer to a plate and let cool to room temperature. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. To make each cookie, wet your hands and break off a walnut-sized piece of the dough. Roll into a ball and then flatten between the palms of your hand to about ¼ inch thick and place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet

REACHING OUT: Pina Chama Lachayalim in Gush Etzion

R

oughly 15 years ago, when Arab terror in Israel was at its peak, Arab murderers took the life of Dr. Shmuel Gillis, Hy”d, a prominent hematologist as he neared his home of Carmei Tzur. His wife Ruti was left to raise their five children alone. Ten days later, another murder, a fatal shooting on the bridge between Jerusalem and Gush Etzion, taking the life of Tzachi Sasson, Hy”d from Kibbutz Rosh Tzurim. Another widow, Ossie and two more orphans. Both men were dedicated to the soldiers who helped protect our residents. The Pina Chama was founded by Ruti and Ossie after they finished shloshim in their husbands’ memories. The Pina Chama (a cozy corner), is a place where soldiers can stop for a bit of rest, for a drink, something to eat or just a kind word on the way to their bases. It is located at the Gush Etzion Junction. The station is maintained by the residents of Efrat and Gush Etzion who volunteer. It operates from 7 AM until 9 PM every day except Shabbat. On a busy morning shift, more than 100 soldiers are served. On a broiling hot day, they come in for a cold drink. When the rain is pouring, they come in for hot soup. On an average day 250 soldiers of every rank and every unit stop off at the station for a cup of hot coffee, a freshly baked chunk of chocolate cake, and a smile. The supplies are made possible through generous donations and the upkeep and the infrastructure is covered by the local councils of Gush Etzion and Efrat. The place is manned by volunteers – mostly women and some men, who come straight from shul in the mornings, to open up for the soldiers. Most have a set

weekly or bi-weekly shift. Most of the cakes are baked by groups of women from all over Gush Etzion and even from Beit Shemesh. The place is kept going by a wonderful committee and donations from all over the world. We think of them as our own sons and give them a break and goodies and then they’re back in their jeeps off to the lines of defense. Most are not from our area, and for the first time they have the opportunity to interact with the residents of the area. “I do my reserve service in the middle of the cold winter of Gush Etzion. What a wonderful surprise to get a warm cup of soup while I wait for my pick up ride to Hebron.” (Lior 24, is a sergeant from Haifa) In the course of a week, 26 lbs. of sugar, 30 bags of milk, 10 cans of instant coffee and Turkish coffee, as well as 3,000 hot cups, 3,000 cold cups and in the winter six giant tubs of soup. There is an annual Independence day BBQ for 800 soldiers. “From the depths of the loss of two special souls – Dr. Shmuel Gillis and Tzachi Sasson, Hy”d – the residents of Gush Etzion have nurtured a project that has done more good than we can even imagine – the Pina Chama for our soldiers. May their memories be blessed!” “Pina Chama Purim cards” are available for you to send out to friends and family. Every dollar donated goes directly to benefit the Pina Chama and our chayalim. If you are interested in helping this worthy cause please contact Teena Samter at 516-532-6468 or savteena@gmail.com or Miriam Amitzur miriamhauser@ gmail.com, Suggested donations: Package of 7 cards for $18, package of 15 cards for $36.All donations are tax deductible. SPRING 2016 Continued from page 80 them getting their independence. Kind of bittersweet. I never got as many comments about my mishloach manot as I did that year. R.D. My mother was always responsible for our shalach manos growing up. When I got married and had my first child I realized I was finally on my own. Since I was in nursing school, my baby daughter and I dressed as nurses. My husband dressed in scrubs and our shalach manos was a little medical kit with aspirin candy, cookies shaped liked pills and other medical related foods plus some real medical supplies like bandages. I was very proud of this first endeavor. O.J.

spaghetti and bread sticks, maybe tomato sauce. Very cute and useful. L.M. I top myself each and every year, if I do say so myself. People always comment and expect a magnificent mishloach manos. I tend not to disappoint.... Maybe next year my theme will be modesty! D.W. I am not a creative person but I have received some very nice ones over the years. The one I really liked had a theme of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and had a photo of all the kids dressed up to match the theme with theme related candy. S.H.

I really liked the Italian theme someone sent me years ago before I knew anything about themes. It was a colander with

Continued from page 14 right were the three huge boxes, quite heavy to lift and lower. I slowly took them down, one by one, and placed them on the open hi-riser bed to examine. The first box I opened was filled with writing utensils and other tools of expression, from colored pencils and crayons to magic markers and pastels. There were also various types of paints – oil, water-color, puff and ones specially made for painting on glass (my decorative salt shaker phase). The second box had dozens and dozens of paper products such as fancy cards, construction paper, novelty sheets, press-on letters, stickers and the like. The third box was the most interesting. Random fabrics and ribbons, beads and sequins, shells and stones, pipe-cleaners and pompoms. I couldn’t believe how much I had accumulated and what great things I had collected. My first thought was “Hey, this stuff is cool. I can make some neat things from this.” Then I urged myself to be realistic and to acknowledge that I had very little use for this stuff, fun as it was, anymore. It was time to part with it. But then I had another thought. “My grandchildren would love this! This could provide hours of creative entertainment for them!” I calmed myself down and put it all into perspective. A) More than half my grandchildren live overseas. Realistically, when were they going to get to use this stuff? 2) Those that were local were age two and under. It would be a while before they would appreciate the contents of my magical boxes. 3) Even if and when they did, there was plenty to go around. So I got myself a nice size bag and went through each container pulling out a generous portion of its contents. There was still so much left. Before I could change my mind I snapped the lids shut and hauled them onto the shelf again. I emailed my friend that I had something for her. When she picked up the bag and peered inside her eyes lit up. It was exactly what she was looking for. I even managed to locate a couple of stray magazines I hadn’t spotted before and threw them into her goody bag. So this little adventure was successful on so many levels. I donated items to my friend’s cause making her happy and the children she works with thrilled. By doing that I did a little more housecleaning. Always a plus. By going through the boxes I stirred up old, cherished memories and enjoyed a few moments of lovely reminiscing, especially of some great Purims gone by. And by taking the moment to do a good deed I was reminded of some great stuff I had in the house that I will pull out the next time the grand-kids come to visit from Israel IY’H and for when the ones who live nearby get a little older. A win-win situation all around! On that upbeat note we wish a Freilichin Purim to all!
