esterday I caught a glimpse of my shadow as I was crossing the street to visit my elderly neighbor and I was startled. When we are being true to ourselves we have a pretty good idea of what we really look like, around how much we weigh, what size we can comfortably wear (even if we cut the revealing tags out as soon as we bring the garment home from the store), as well as just how much space our bodies take up. Even if we don’t want others to observe and measure our girth and are hoping – forever hoping – that we appear thinner than we are – when we are honest and realistic, catching our reflection in a mirror should come as no great surprise. And neither should seeing the size of our shadow. But there I was, feeling pretty good about

my outfit of choice that morning and – dare I say – myself in general, when I caught that glimpse of my large and ungainly shadow. I was so startled that I actually stopped in my tracks. Perhaps I hadn’t noticed that someone was walking next to me and it was a double silhouette I was seeing? But no, as both my heart and mind told me, I was solo on my little dead-end street. Just moi and moi alone. Not only was my shadow bigger than I expected but it was also somewhat misshapen, unnatural. As I continued on my now less than merry way I began reviewing in my head what I had eaten thus far that day and tabulating caloric intake – a task I can practically accomplish in my sleep as I had been doing it regularly almost my entire adult life. But it

Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: MIKE’S BISTRO

By: Rachel Rosenberg

I

don’t recall if I have written about Mike’s Bistro before, but either way it deserves a new review for its new location on 54th Street in Manhattan between Lexington and Park Avenue. Chef Mike Gershkovich closed a longtime favorite Upper West Side restaurant and opened bigger and better in Midtown. The new location is fashionable in its ambiance but even more so with its fantastic plates. The new Mike’s has five private dining rooms which is really great when you’re having that special night out and you’d like a little privacy. This week I was fortunate to dine in a private dining room with my sisters, and a couple of fabulous girlfriends. When we were originally seated in the large main dining room, one of my sisters had to only begin to mention we would prefer a quieter table when we were whisked away to a smaller room that seats only 4 tables. The walls of the room were a sparkly red with large photographs of Sackett Lake in the Catskills. Chef Mike, who makes it his business to stop at every table, later told us he took the photographs himself. The new menu includes a selection of crudo (raw) fish dishes, cold appetizers, hot appetizers, large entrees for two, “simply prepared” entrees, “signature” dishes and side dishes. The raw tuna poke with nachos for two was incredible. The tuna is marinated Hawaiian style and served cubed in a small bowl with white and purple nachos artfully surrounding it. complete this decorative plate. The ceviche was fluke served in a tall crystal ice cream style dish with segments of oranges and flavored with fennel. The raw beef duet was a combination of a circle of carpaccio with a center cylinder of tartar topped with a perfect quail egg. A bite of the runny egg mixed with tartar and carpaccio is epic. The cold breaded veal panzanella salad was incredibly colorful. There were halves of grape tomatoes, cubes of cucumbers, yellow peppers, red onions, black olives, and, of course, breaded veal tossed in vinaigrette. The dish was surprisingly refreshing for a meat salad. Thankfully, with all of the new dishes, Mike did not surrender the old classic favorites. The homemade gnocchi with duck and chicken confit is a satisfying and comforting dish that I can never pass on. The warm crispy veal sweetbreads are served with tomato oil with small chunks of tomato and scattered shimeji mushrooms. After so many appetizers, we shared a chicken supreme and a couple of sides for the entrees. The chicken was beautifully sliced with the bone on the plate. The inside of the chicken was perfectly moist while the outside was glazed and crispy. For a lighter side dish, the garlicky green beans were al dente and delicious. For a guilty pleasure, the yam fritters were breaded fried sweet potato goodness and best when dipped in their accompanying cranberry sauce. For dessert the traditional pecan pie and apple crisp were fine but could not compare to the tart frozen blueberry crisp. Dinner at Mike’s is food as comforting as home but in vogue. Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney and name partner at Rosenberg and Steinmetz PC, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. MIND OVER MATTER: Shame in a Thin Mint Jumper

By Jennifer Mann, LMSW

I

t is a day in late February as I sit here writing this column for the Spring edition of Esra. We have just departed from a treacherous few weeks of snowstorm after snowstorm. This winter has gone a little something like this… snow, freezing temperatures, ice, slush, freezing temps, ice, more snow, more snow, etcetera. Businesses were shut down, meetings cancelled and the children were home from school more times than I care to remember. I think I need my stomach pumped from all the low calorie hot chocolates with full fat whipped cream I ingested! But today is one of those rare days when the sun is shining and the wind isn’t whipping my face. Never one to live on the edge, even I did not zip up my coat today. I believe my car thermostat read 40 degrees and I saw two men in shorts and t– shirts around town. It’s the kind of day that not only breeds the shedding of physical layers, but serves as a reminder to me that Spring is right around the corner and that it is OK to peel away those emotional layers that have been holding us back from living our most authentic lives. We all live with a constellation of emo tions. Hopefully many of them are good, but if you’ve got two hands, two feet and walk standing upright you’ve probably amassed some feelings of guilt and shame over the years. If you have never experienced these emotions, you are either a tzadik or have many people in your life who are incredibly frustrated by you for a lack of self– awareness. One day in third grade, on the bus ride home from school, I wore a white and mint green thinly striped jumper to the knee. The driver, Adam (though some insisted it was “Adams” and he went by his last name), called my stop. I stood up and went into the aisle when a fourth grade boy called behind me “Move out of the way Fatty!” My mouth began to quiver and I silently prayed that I would be able to stop myself from crying

42

in front of all the children on the bus. My memory goes blank at this point and I don’t remember how I got upstairs to my apartment or taking off my knapsack. What I remember next is my head in a pillow on my parents’ bed, hysterically crying. It was an ugly cry. I was inconsolable. I do remember my mother sitting at the foot of the bed asking what happened. I told her someone called me “fat” and she responded something along the lines of “Who said that? I’ll kill them!” And “Jennifer, you’re gorgeous and you’re not fat! That’s just a ridiculous thing to say.” Why do I remember what I wore that day? Why do I remember that one third grade afternoon and my mother consoling me? Surely, there were hundreds of other third grade bus rides and afternoons. But this one has stuck with me until today, approximately 25 years later. I think I know why. The shame I felt on that warm Spring afternoon was all encompassing. I never thought of myself as fat, but maybe I was… and maybe everyone else thought I was too. I was an utterly humiliated 8 year old. My brain coded it and assigned it a meaning and I can’t “unremember” it. (I have no idea where my keys are – which would be extremely helpful – but this I remember). While guilt is a mechanism that we use to punish ourselves for bad or perceived bad behavior, shame is the distress or humiliation we feel when our actions do not match who we think ourselves to be nor want ourselves to be. In some cases and for some people, shame can be positive. If you do something wrong, feeling embarrassed can be a good thing. It may prevent you from doing it again. And if your cheeks blush, well… you are letting the other person know that you feel badly. Shame can also be highly destructive when it is not warranted. Shame can ruin a life. People employ many destructive behaviors to manage their shame. Some abuse drugs or alcohol, others binge eat, starve themselves, smoke, gamble, shop till they drop or completely deny themselves of any pleasure or personal “me” time. We spend our lives trying to figure out ways to deal with our shame, without actually facing it. Some of us feel shame for the way we have mistreated a loved one or been mistreated by a loved one, for stealing, for having been abused or molested, for inappropriate thoughts, for being jealous of a friend. The possibilities are unfortunately endless.

APRIL 2015, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com

If you have been living with a personal shame, in the name of Spring and the imagery of rebirth it conjures, I encourage you to begin to think about sharing your shame. Most shameful things are kept hidden away in the dark, with the rest of our secrets. The best way to counteract it is to bring it out of the darkness and shine a light upon it. The longer the shame sits in the dark, the scarier and more overwhelming it becomes. Shame’s greatest enemies are truth telling and compassion. Loving ourselves despite our unsavory actions and thoughts

and despite the negative messages people have told us about ourselves, is perhaps life’s most difficult and most rewarding journey. As we take off our winter coats and scarves let us disrobe the emotional shrouds that keep us locked in futile and unsatisfying patterns in our own behaviors and our relationships. Enjoy the physical and emotional warmth to come! Jennifer

Within a short time they learned how to get junk food from other sources and what they didn’t want to eat, they refused. I was powerless and wasted so much energy. Today they are good, healthy eaters but I probably can’t take the credit for that. G.N. I was very rigid with our firstborn’s schedule. The light had to be dim, the music had to be classical, bedtime was at 7:30 and no straying. O.R.

Wow – all the usual stuff, not worth sweating over: toilet training, bedtime struggles, homework, learning to swim or ride a bike..... all pale in comparison to college, careers, marriage, grandchildren. Main thing then and now – good health and mazal! C.J. Homework!!

HO I just came back from a twelve day trip to Israel. Well that’s kind of misleading. A trip may make you think I did some touring. To the Dead Sea for example, or the Carmel Spa for a treat. No I really should say I came back from a twelve day stay in Jerusalem. But you know what? Even that is not exactly accurate. It suggests that I passed almost two weeks exploring this beautiful, ancient city. Which is more than possible. You can spend endless days discovering all Jerusalem has to offer, from amazing excavations to bustling For The Woman Who Wears marketplaces, from breathtaking overlooks to powerful YouJust can schedule Many museums. I

t began a few days before Pesach four years ago. As I made my way to work, a sanitation worker and I nearly collided on the sidewalk as he called out to his co-worker, who was maneuvering their vehicle. Winded and caught off guard, he yelled at me over the din, “What’s up with all the food the Jews are throwing away? Good food, too!” His concern, obviously, wasn’t baal tashchis but the increase in refuse he was being forced to haul. Even though he had spoken out of frustration, his question was still a good one, and I had wondered about it myself. Nothing in life is coincidental. I took his (His) message to heart, and that year I started a gemach for chametz. Before Pesach every year, families discard chametz as they clean their homes getting ready for the holiday. Sometimes the food goes to the hired help. More often, though, it winds up wasted. It is a shame because the groceries — many non-perishable — could just as easily have been given after Pesach to families that are struggling financially. During the first two years of the gemach, the response to my offer to collect, sell, and then distribute the chametz after Pesach at no charge to anyone was modest. With the help of newsprint publicity — first via a classified ad and the following year in a feature — the amount distributed jumped. I realized, however, that even those 3,100 pounds are only a small portion of the food being discarded. Or, put more bluntly, outright wasted. So if your minhag is to have no chametz in your house at all during Pesach, please don’t throw it out on the street. Instead, please consider donating that food to my chametz gemach. Once you give it to me, it becomes my responsibility to sell it halachically and then to distribute it after Pesach. Those who receive it — including kollel yungerleit and others struggling to get by — need it and definitely appreciate it. Believe me; you will be easing their financial burden. I am hoping that you’ll consider a food drop-off as part of your Pesach cleaning. I am also accepting donations to purchase supplies or extra food. I can be reached at (718) 377-6361 or by email at yitzchak@relkin.com. Please put “Chametz Gemach” in the subject line. I can accept donations until Sunday, April 2nd.

Continued from page 12 had been a “good” day, nothing unhealthy to report. I scrolled back a couple of days and still could not find the source of my dismay. I entered my neighbor’s Tudor style home and instinctively turned to check myself out in her hallway mirror. And then I began to laugh. My reflection here, too, was startling over-sized but it now all made perfect sense. After so many brutal winter days piled one on top of the other, week after week, I had forgotten just how many protective layers I wore regularly – automatically – just to leave the house. Multiple garments underneath my puffy sheared coat; a cozy, fuzzy scarf both under and over my outerwear; big, unfeminine but warm and waterproof gloves and a large floppy fur hat. No wonder I looked like the abominable snowman coming down the street. I wasn’t planning on visiting for too long but the living room was very warm. My house is the same vintage as my neighbor’s – very old – and the temperature can vary greatly from one room to the next. As she was sitting in an overheated area (not more then several feel away from the kitchen where ice drops clung to the house’s original windows), I slowly began peeling the layers off. The process took a while. I stayed for about an hour, bundled myself up again to face the single digit temperatures, even though I was only walking the length of a few houses to get back indoors, and then began the shucking off of clothing all over again when I got home. You know something? I was getting pretty darn tired of all the donning and doffing of clothing this winter. Like most people I knew I had had just about enough of the cold weather, the brutal wind and the slippery, ugly-grey ice banks everywhere. I’m actually someone who enjoys wearing winter garb. I am much more comfortable when I can add a vest or sweater to my outfit than wearing a single thin layer of clothing. I love the look and the feel of turtlenecks and keep my black tights on long passed the acceptable date of “expiration.” But even I had had it. I was ready for the new season to begin. In three weeks, just about the time when you will be reading this, spring is officially

supposed to begin. Is it possible that you will be perusing this issue soaking up the sun on your back porch? At this writing that doesn’t seem likely. But if perhaps you are standing in only one layer of clothing in your kitchen and are able to see your grass for the first time in months looking out your window, instead of icicles hanging down from the eaves of your house, it’s a start. I don’t know what the temperature will be like in three week’s time but I do know that this Spring Style issue is ready when you are with all the latest in fabulous fashions for every member of your family. The new season is beginning and with it comes new looks, new ideas and new perspectives on everything from dining out to shedding those old feelings of shame. Time to lighten up, peel off those layers – be they physical or emotional – and free ourselves up for better, more important things. First on the list, of course is getting together with loved ones and enjoying a Chag Kasher V’Sameach.
