ears ago when you bought a daily planner, a school notebook or an annual calendar, more often than not somewhere in its pages was a chronicle of anniversaries and a list of their symbols. I haven't seen one of those in years. I don't know if they still print them, let alone if anyone actually follows them, but I do remember seeing them often and even studying them with some depth when I was much younger. I don't know if anyone ever took those lists seriously. Who composed them, I wonder? I can still recall some of the items on the list – wood, lace, pearls – but not which year each belonged to. The two I do remember were paper and silver. Paper was the symbol for the first anniversary, though I can't imagine why. What would be an appropriate paper gift and what wife would be excited on her first anniversary to get something made out of paper? Silver, I am pretty sure, was the symbol for the 25th anniversary and that made sense. Twentyfive years is a substantial landmark occasion and silver was and still is a valuable commodity. Like I said, I

14

don't know if anyone ever took those lists seriously and I myself have not thought about them in many years but a recent birthday brought them to mind. My four sisters and I still exchange birthday gifts and on the last anniversary of my birth they all seemed to have consulted the same list. Accessory was clearly indicated for this fifty-something milestone. Apparently even my husband had gotten the memo. Between the five of them I received a pair of rose-gold hoop earrings, a fun gold tassel necklace, a black leather wristlet, a plaid blanket shawl and a black and white funky fur vest. Each gift was generous and much appreciated (although I was pretty sure I was not nearly cool enough or young enough to carry off the vest). They arrived individually from a couple of days before my birthday to a few days after, based on the busy schedule of the "gifter." While I have no doubt that each sibling and my spouse purchased their gifts individually, it seemed

Continued from page 14 more than a coincidence that they all purchased gifts in the same category. Could they have been in cahoots? Could there actually have been a discussion about moi, something like, Rachayle's birthday's coming up. You know, she can really use some new, updated accessories? I am neither paranoid nor that insecure so I strongly doubt it. But it did seem a bit too coincidental. Just saying. When you think about it, it's pretty difficult to shop for another person – even a sister – especially when you've been doing it for half a century and you're trying to be creative. A substantial piece of clothing like a

16

skirt or sweater is so personal. It's just too risky trying to pick out something like that even for someone you are close with. And that's without getting into the very sensitive issue of size and fit. Books are nice but everyone enjoys something else and how do you know they haven't just read the title you've selected? A gift certificate is pretty safe but you have to know the places the recipient frequents. I can't tell you how many times I've received gift certificates to places I don't normally visit and kept the card in my purse only to have the expiration date come and go without ever having made the trip to the assigned shop. Such a waste!

Continued from page 16 So accessories are really a great way to go. While I wouldn't go picking out a pair of shoes for someone, anything where fit is not an issue is pretty safe. Jewelry, scarves, bags, fur collars, pom-pom hats, gloves etc. The choices are endless and these days so stylish. We usually devote our spring issue to the new season's fashions and this year the choices for women, men and children are across the board all worth a peek. While we are not always in the market to treat ourselves to new additions to our wardrobe, a new accessory can usually fit into our budget and will often make an older outfit look fresh and revamped.

22

In this issue our advertisers have gone out of their way to find something exciting for every member of the family whether you're making a simcha and looking for a special ensemble, getting married or starting a new job and need to update your wardrobe or just want a spring pick-me-up and looking for the latest "musthave" that will boost your outfit as well as your spirits. Whatever you're searching for you'll find it here. And if it's a birthday present for a favorite sister you know you've come to the right place. You can't go wrong with a new spring accessory. Even if you're not the only one making that call.

By Robin Daar, LCSW

ow many times have we heard these words: “Why are you in such a bad mood? Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed?” Our mood defined as “a temporary state of mind or feeling” cannot possibly be determined simply by the side of the bed we get up on - or can it? In the late 19th century this saying came about as a result of an old superstition that it was unlucky to get out of bed with your left leg first. This fit with other superstitions of the time that in general the left side was unlucky. Of course one can always find an opposing opinion on the same subject. Some sleep psychologists have concluded that the left side of the bed is right and the right side of the bed is wrong. They know that the left side of the brain controls logic and rational thought, while the right side controls emotion and imagination. If you get out of bed on the left side they believe that you may focus your energy on logic and stay away from volatile emotions (which lead to a bad mood). Our mood can be very powerful. It originates from a physical source. The part of the brain responsible for our mood is the limbic system. The limbic system is made up of several structures located in the cerebral cortex. These structures register the levels of neurotransmitters being manufactured by the body in response to certain conditions that the person is experiencing. To give an example, a much greater level of serotonin is produced when a person is in love, eats chocolate or takes more drugs than normal. The brain registers this increase in level, and the resultant feeling is one we associate with happiness. Recently a client came to me describing feelings of sadness. My client explained, “I have a pretty good idea of what it is that puts me in both good and bad moods. With that knowledge I can sometimes know what situations, people and things to avoid or likewise to be around in order to create a certain mood. I think I know myself pretty well and things are pretty good in my life right now. That’s why I’m here. I can’t seem to figure out why I feel so depressed lately.”

These were the actual words used by this client. A woman who is self described as an upbeat person who seems to get into a “funk” every year around November. When I asked her to describe how she would describe her “funk” she said the following: “I can usually feel my shoulders slack and my mood weaken. I begin to feel fearful and a bit paranoid. I also have difficulty getting out of bed and begin to get reclusive.” I asked my client to further describe the symptoms she was experiencing. She went on to describe many of these: • Feeling depressed most of the day. • Feeling hopeless and worthless. • Having low energy. • Losing interest in things she once enjoyed. • Having problems sleeping. • Experiencing changes in appetite and weight. • Feeling agitated. • Having difficulty concentrating. Her description was so detailed and so typical, that once she told me that these symptoms appear in the fall/winter it was pretty clear that she was ex(718) 234-3121 periencing SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. BEAUTY BULLETIN: SPRING… FORWARD

S

pring is in the air. It’s time to think new and fresh. It’s time to lighten up your look. Spring is all about removing the “mask” of the heavy layers of winter, and that includes your face!

By Naomi Scheier

Think fresh clean makeup. It’s time to toss out the heavy base for a tinted moisturizer, shelf the purple lipstick for soft pinks, give that heavy contouring a break and replace it with a soft rosy blush. To bring your dry winter skin back to life, start with deep cleansing! The Clarisonic

Mia Fit is an excellent cleansing tool for removing layers of dead dull skin, brightening your complexion and unclogging your pores. For an added glow to your skin Makesense Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer and Makesense Pearlizer make your skin luminous and radiant. For your cheeks, try M.A.C. powder blush in Style, a shimmering peach that flatters all skin tones, warms up your complexion and gives you a fresh look all day. For a soft lip try Chantecaille Hydra Chic lipstick in Fairy Moss and top with Burberry Lip Gloss in Nude Rose #14. For the most luminous look, always remember to smile! Have a great spring! NAOMI

Dipping Sauce: • 1/4 cup honey • 1/3 cup soy sauce • 2 tablespoons sesame oil • 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice (optional) • 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 clove garlic, minced • 2 scallions, sliced

• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided • 8 spears green or white asparagus • 6 cups chopped romaine lettuce • 1/2 cup sliced hearts of palm • 1 cup honey-glazed pecans Dressing: • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 clove garlic, minced • 3/4 cup canola oil To prepare the salad: Preheat oven to 425°F. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil. Toss beets with salt and 2 tablespoons of olive oil; place on prepared baking sheet. Roast until softened, about 40 minutes. Let cool. Arrange asparagus on a separate baking sheet; drizzle with remaining tablespoon olive oil. Roast just until crisp, 5 to 7 minutes for green asparagus or 8 to 9 minutes for white. Let cool, and then cut into 2-inch pieces or leave whole. Arrange lettuce on a large platter. Scatter with hearts of palm, pecans, roasted beets, and asparagus. To prepare the dressing: Whisk together vinegar, sugar, salt, and garlic in a small bowl. Slowly add oil, whisking continuously until emulsified. Pour dressing over salad; toss and serve immediately.

To prepare the skewers: Soak bamboo skewers in water for 20 minutes. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl. Form mixture into 40 football-shaped torpedoes made with about 1/2 cup of chicken mixture. If using skewers, thread each torpedo on to a single skewer. Coat a grill pan with cooking spray, and set over medium-high heat. (Or prepare a grill with medium-high heat and grease grates.) Grill chicken in batches until browned on one side, about 4 to 6 minutes, depending on thickness and shape. Turn and grill an additional 4 to 6 minutes, or until cooked through. Remove from pan. To prepare the dipping sauce: Whisk together honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, lime juice, ginger, garlic powder, and garlic in a small bowl. Stir in scallions. Serve chicken warm or at room temperature with dipping sauce.

Skewered Chicken Yakitori

Serves 10 No matter how hard I try, I never seem to make enough of these. People love them! I shape them like torpedoes and serve them on skewers for fun, but you can omit the skewers or serve them as sliders, too. They taste good warm or at room temperature, drizzled with the glaze. Skewers: • 40 bamboo skewers (optional) • 2 pounds ground chicken • 2 eggs • 1 bunch scallions, finely chopped (about 1 cup) • 8 cloves garlic, minced • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs • 1/4 cup soy sauce • 2 tablespoons sesame oil • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice • 4 teaspoons grated fresh ginger • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional) • 1/3 cup chopped cilantro Nonstick cooking spray, as needed

SPRING 2016 I said I would never buy/wear a pom pom hat......that I am too old.....and then someone gave me one for Chanukah.....I wear it often and get many compliments. ......now I think it is rather cute and it keeps me warm....Never say never! S.M. Me change?

E.W.

I bought bracelet-like elastic cuffs at a boutique sale from a woman who manufactures them. At the time I thought, what a cool idea. They come in different colors and styles and can be worn with almost any sleeve. One pair of cuffs had beads and another a pair had fringes. I was going to give them to my two daughters for Chanukkah, but once I brought them home, I was not excited about them and put them in my coat closet. They have been in the closet since and I have yet to wear them. I tried

them on tonight in front of my daughter and she thought they could be cool. Have yet to see if she wears them, I may try tomorrow. S.O.

High heel booties. Sprained my ankle! Ended up in the ER. D.H.

Michele watch. Everyone was wearing it – even, of course, kids. I said I'd never give in to that fad but it wasn't really a fad. They stuck around and then my girls wanted them for their birthdays so I gave in and, lo and behold, now I've got one too (and I love it!) M.U.

A swim clide. I never thought I'd buy one - let alone wear it - but I found myself in a situation where I needed something to cover up but also that could get wet. I bought a matching skirt and top and it looked fine and was comfortable. Now when I take my grandchildren to the pool or beach I have the perfect thing to wear! S.E.

Platform clogs... Not a good idea. Found myself walking like Herman Monster ( for those of you old enough to know who he is!). B.G.

Bright plastic rain boots. Who would have thought they make them in my size? I never had anything to wear in heavy downpours where winter boots are too heavy and shoes get ruined. Now I do. D. G.

I bought a little leather jacket last year when I noticed people coming and going in them. I don't love leather but I love this jacket. Makes me feel confident. S.F. Definitely the pom pom hat which I adore but without my hair down which I do not usually do... – let’s just say... there are better looks for me! L.M.W.

I like the leggings that end at the ankle under a skirt with flats. I finally tried it and as much as I love it on everyone else, it

Continued from page 32 Because much of the reasons for SAD have to do with light, the treatment most often used is “light therapies”. (No, that does not mean running off to grab some sun in an exotic island - although I’m sure that would treat SAD quite nicely). Instead what people who experience this syndrome can do is simply buy artificial light. “Light therapy” brings more light into a person’s environment during the dark days of winter. These fixtures are known as “light boxes” and can be purchased in lighting stores as well as online. Other suggestions to treat SAD include keeping stress to a minimum (I realize that’s easier said than done but if something stressful can be put off until the spring/summer that would be recommended). Meditation is highly recommended, as well as exercise. Talk therapy is helpful in that it gives the person the opportunity to talk about the stress they may be experiencing and figure out better ways to alleviate it. Talk therapy hopefully helps a person deal with winters to come. Antidepressants are a valuable part of managing SAD. The antidepressant may need to be adjusted throughout the course of the winter. They should be prescribed by someone who understands the disorder and can medicate appropriately. Watching your diet during these months is crucial. If one eats sweets (and it’s not unusual to crave them if you have SAD), they will make you feel more lethargic and contribute to the depression. Alternatives to medications are supplements like: • Melatonin – to help regulate your circadian rhythm. • Omega 3 fatty acids - these are healthy fats that are being studied as a possible treatment for depression. • Psycho-education for a client is vital in the treatment of SAD. The reason is because with the right information a person does not have to suffer. So that’s the entire “SAD” story. I hope this helps some of you reading this article who just can’t figure out why you feel so “down and out” come the winter. Your mood has little to do with the side of the bed you got up on. It does however have to do with many variables that are controllable. If you know anyone who might be experiencing SAD please share this article so they can approach next winter with the proper tools. Meanwhile, let’s all enjoy the natural sunlight of the fresh spring season.
