I

f I’m harping too much about winter this year, I apologize, but it’s been such a long, cold, nasty, ugly season this time around that its effects are lingering way past the acceptable date on my calendar. I am completely aware that this is our May issue which normally comes out well into spring. And I certainly know that our theme this month is gardens and growth, devoted to the most competent grower of gardens and encourager of growth, our moms. So yes I know all that. And still feel I compelled to talk about the ravages of this winter. But not to worry. It’s all tied in. Pesach is literally just days away at this writing and even though I am blessed once again to be spending the spring holiday with my sister and Mom in sunny Florida this year, there are still many pre-Pesach tasks to attend to. But each morning as I step out my front door to begin my day, instead of thinking about cleaning my car, getting my carpets washed, shopping for

some new seasonal fashions, etc., the first thing that hits me in the face is the slap of a bitter cold wind. I sigh and head back inside for either a scarf or a pair of gloves, or to change my optimistically light jacket for a heavy winter one. Unacceptable and yet I have no choice. I come back outside bedecked for January, not a couple of days before April, and I am hit again. This time it is my eyes that are assaulted. Today it was the stone wall supporting my barren front garden where shrubs would normally be starting to sprout some new growth. It seems to have collapsed overnight. While one could speculate that after twenty-five years it had given us enough service and was entitled to a bit of maintenance, I have no doubt it was this horrendous winter, the snow, the cold, the ice and the salt that caused the wall’s sudden demise. I’ve been noticing many other unattractive results of this harsh winter that apparently is still not be-

hind us. Many of the slate stones on my walkway are chipped. And the cement grout is missing. If it wasn’t the snow and salt it was probably all the necessary chopping of the thick accumulated ice that did the damage. Somewhere in the back of my chilled brain I might have realized that there would be consequences to the relentless hacking away at the glazed film in front of my house but my fear of slipping or, G-d forbid, having someone on their way into Topsmy home lose footing offered no feasible alternatives. Skirts Last week it was the devastated planters on my Dresses front porch that gave me pause. The heavy stone Casual Wear planters had traveled from my in-laws’ home in Boro Jewelry Park to our Long Island abode with some difficulty many years ago when my husband’sAccessories parents sold their home and moved to an apartment. Yes, they were old but they had character. I loved that they were authentic – not the kind that looked antique but when you lifted them you found were just a light plastic replica. No, these were the real McCoy. But yesterday when I walked out my front door I noticed they no longer Seamtress looked solid and stately, just sad and abandoned. I know spring will eventually get here. onIt the always premises does. It’s just that we’re all a little anxious already. Last week, as spring was officially – at least according to the secular calendar – supposed to begin, we had One stop another snowstorm. A good (why good?), three to six shopping. inches. And yes, while it did melt relatively quickly, today we witnessed flurries again and the temperature All price away. dropped dramatically. My radiators are clanking In a few days I will be traveling down south. I am ranges hoping that at some point in the ten days that I will be gone the seasons will right themselves and I will return home to a proper spring. While I don’t expect the stone wall to miraculously rebuild itself or the chips and grouting to fill themselves back in I am hoping that repainting my planters, picking up fresh soil and filling them with colorful impatiens will be a realistic goal to put on my do-so list soon after my suitcases are unpacked and put away. Yes, it’s this particular winter that we all would like to end but, in fact, every year we look forward to spring and the promises it brings. As we shed our layers of garments and feel lighter we are more inclined to step outdoors and approach new challenges with optimism and enthusiasm. May. It’s a month to cultivate and grow our gardens, be they our physical ones or our spiritual ones. And, of course, it is a time – as always – to recognize and appreciate the caretakers of the gardens – our Moms. May your garden grow and 1306 Ave. M flourish. 718-998-8783

MIND OVER MATTER:

Reinventing Ourselves By Robin Daar LCSW

I

n our lives we transition through many stages. In each of these stages our identities change as well as the roles we play. We wear different hats and do many different things. Sometimes it’s hard to remember what hat we are wearing. At some point in our lives we may step back and take a good look at ourselves and evaluate who we are. We may like what we see or we may decide we would like to change something about ourselves. The desire to change may be part of the natural stage of life’s evolution. As we pass through the various stages we may find we have outgrown them and the roles we play in them. Certainly as we get older we find that we hopefully have more time to focus on our selves, or we may want to get out of a “rut” we feel we are in and start living the life we’d love to live and become the person who belongs in that life. Reinventing doesn’t always mean changing every aspect of yourself either. One can choose to change parts of yourself at any time in your life. Reinventing yourself can be exciting and scary but making changes can be uncomfortable no matter how much you want them. According to professional speaker and author Tony Robbins, it’s the preparation for change that takes time. In the end it’s a single instant when change occurs. Three steps have been suggested to create a lasting change to reinventing ourselves. Step 1. Believe something in your life must change. In order to reinvent yourself you must believe with all your heart that change is needed. Step 2. Believe that only you can change it. You have to want this change enough to make it your personal mission. Step 3. Believe that you are capable of making the desired change. Let’s use a very common example. Your doctor tells you your blood pressure is up and you need to lose 25 lbs. or it can lead to heart disease. No one likes to hear this but after this conversation you realize something in your life must CHANGE. You realize that you need to start eating more healthfully and get more exercise. Then you realize that in order for these things to happen

38

YOU need to make them happen. Lastly you need to believe that YOU are capable of making this change because you really want it and that it truly is possible! Robbins goes on to say that people are motivated by two things. One is to avoid pain and the other is to gain pleasure. When you want to change a behavior pattern the key is to associate pain with the behavior that you don’t want and pleasure with the behavior you do want. Your reinvention will require creating new, positive and constructive habits to take you out of the routine you have been following. Your reinvention plan must be broken down into small actions you can do every day. You have to be brutally honest with yourself about how long each step will take to achieve in order to arrive at your desired goal. To stay positive and motivated keep track of your accomplishments as you go along. Studies show that if you write down your goal, you are more likely to achieve it. Now what about reinventing yourself professionally? Some people decide to change careers when they feel bored, unchallenged or frustrated with what they are doing. Others have no choice but to make changes professionally when they lose a job or need more income. So how does one go about that? Some suggestions include: 1. Listen to your heart. Your heart will help guide towards your passion. 2. Be ready to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. 3. Think about what your strengths are. What unique qualities and transferable skills have you acquired that will be useful to you. 4. Do not make career decisions based on what others want for you. Be your own cheerleader. 5. Analyze your career choice and prepare your strategies. According to design strategist/success coach Ari Squires, “Reinvention is where you leave your mark. If you want to stay ahead of the game and stay afloat, as well as be fulfilled and happy with your life, reinventing yourself is a must, rather than settling for comfort and living an unfulfilled life. Reinvention is not just the improvement to a new career, it is also improvement of your overall being.” Is there a point in one’s life when reinventing yourself is unrealistic because of your age?

Raveena Helson, professor of psychology at University of California, Berkeley says: “We have to modify our identities as we go through life”. She directed a study called “The Mills study” where she followed 120 woman over 50 years of age examining personal traits, social influences and personal development, proving in the process that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself. “Even at 60, “ says Helson, “people can resolve to make themselves more the people they would like to become”. In this very study a dozen woman showed positive personal changes from ages 60-70. So if you feel a change is needed in your life whether it be a small change like getting out of bed earlier to exercise or a big change like going from a teaching career to owning your own business, keep in mind that you are in good company. B”H we are living longer and healthier lives which affords us the opportunity to make positive changes in our lives at any age. Keep positive, believe in yourself, be willing to work hard and things will fall into place.

From Soup to Nuts:

The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook There is nothing like being in a bakery, staring at counters full of freshly made delights, trays full of breads and bagels, cookies and other treats, and deciding what to buy. Small, family-run Jewish bakeries that once lay at the heart of close-knit urban neighborhoods all over America have fallen victim to the demise of the oldschool bakers, shifting demographics and economic realities. But Stanley Ginsberg and Norman Berg seek to keep the memories of these Jewish bakeries alive with their new book, Inside the Jewish Bakery: Recipes and Memories from the Golden Ages of Jewish Baking (Camino Books). Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: THE LOFT

By: Rachel Rosenberg

T

he theme of this month’s Esra, “Our Gardens” got me thinking about the beautiful gardens of my family’s homes in different locations all around New York. When I got married, my British husband wanted to move out of Brooklyn to the suburbs, so he could enjoy a proper English garden. While we moved to Woodmere, and love our spacious garden, many of my family members have stunning gardens in every neighborhood of Brooklyn, including my grandmother’s Boro Park garden. There are many treasures in Boro Park. Most recently I’ve discovered The Loft, an unexpectedly upscale steakhouse right off 13th Avenue on 40th Street. Immediately upon entering the restaurant, you leave behind the traffic and double parked cars and are greeted by a well-dressed and courteous host. Behind the host and giving privacy to the dining patrons, is a glass encased half wall of wines. The restaurant walls are exposed brick decorated with framed art. The first floor has two seating areas divided by a calming glass waterfall. There is also a large seating area upstairs which is great for Sheva Brachot and other private parties. We were seated at a rectangular table near the wall and within seconds had been served a plate of crispy rolls with a very garlicky oil dip. The menu maintains the upscale feel with appetizers such as gnocchi, carpaccio and sweetbreads. The gnocchi appetizer had more shredded duck than gnocchi which is nice if you are watching your carbs. The duck was mixed with sliced mushrooms, corn and peas and was practically drowning in a delicious duck jus. The beef carpaccio was thinly sliced quality beef arranged in an overlapping line with a topping of sliced avocado and colorful salad. Along the plate were dollops of evenly spaced horseradish dip. The taste was as exquisite as it looked, light, fresh, salty and perfectly textured. The chicken lollipops were tiny drumsticks of crispy fried chicken dipped in a sweet mango sauce. The tenderness of the chicken and popping flavors had me eating this entire dish with my hands and licking my fingers clean. I should mention I hadn’t even ordered this appetizer. My sister had ordered the chicken but she let me (okay, I didn’t ask) eat the entire thing.

70

For my entree, the knowledgeable waiter recommended the Filet Mignon, and as this is a steakhouse I was compelled to follow his advice. The nicest part about this dish, is the single piece of pan seared sweet bread served at its side. The filet itself was a thick cut and cooked perfectly medium with a smattering of crispy onions on top. The filet rested on a parsnip puree and was also accompanied by some carrots, green beans and mushrooms. The filet was flawless on its own and needed no more than the light seasoning it had. For dessert I tried the apple pie which was more dough than apples. It was plated straight out of a food magazine with a smear of raspberry sauce ending in a large white short spoon of vanilla ice cream. I’ll be returning to the Loft soon to try their sushi menu and other fabulous sounding dishes that I did not have a chance to try. Bottom line, trees and excellent kosher restaurants do grow in Brooklyn. Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney and name partner at Rosenberg and Steinmetz PC, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. She lives in Woodmere with her husband and three sons.

I plan on adding a raised bed to my current garden...... I love growing stuff. I plant a variety of vegetables and melons. This year I plan on a raised bed to separate what I grow. IT BEGINS WITH THE VASE

A

can wear

Launching in May

massing a small collection of vessels will allow you to build a variety of arrangements for your flowers. CANS AND JARS: These are a standard size and easy to come by. They are perfect for small, casual arrangements. Collect a variety to suit your style and decor. TALL, FLUTED GLASS VASES: Great for large, wide arrangements. They allow stems to splay out so that the blooms can open wide without being squished together. INFORMAL LOW, WIDE, OVAL, OR ROUND VESSELS: These work well for low arrangements, such as centerpieces. STURDY CERAMIC VASES: Ideal for heavier elements that may cause a lighter vase to topple over. BUD VASES: A must for those delicate single stem. PERSONALITY PIECES: These are the pieces not made as a vase, but that are well suited to the job. Pitchers, creamers, urns, trophies, and wooden boxes can all be used for flowers as long as they are watertight or lined with a vessel that is. LOW TRAYS: Great for centerpieces or coffeetable arrangements. The addition of floral frogs or chicken wire makes filling them to the brim with flowers a piece of cake. TALL NARROW BOTTLES: Ideal for a large single bloom or a tall arrangement with just a few airy stems. NARROW CLEAR VASES: These provide a stage to showcase interesting stems. FANCY PEDESTAL BOWLS: These give centerpieces a more sophisticated look when the occasion calls for it. Before you begin arranging, take some time to select a vessel that accentuates what you love about your flowers. Tall, arcing tulip stems might look right at home in a simple, clear vase that will highlight their long, clean lines. A bunch of beautiful wide-open ranunculus with less than lovely foliage might be best showcased in your favorite teacup, with the blooms grouped in a short, tight mass. Using your vessels to create arrangements can also be very impactful. A grouping made up of single stems in individual bottles is a super-fast and simple way to create a unque floral display. A common factor should unite the display to keep it from looking like a hodgepodge. For example, if you are using different types of flowers, one kind of bottle will look best. If the bottles are different, use the same flower type or color. Flowers can be arranged in almost anything, so keep your eye out for interesting pieces to use as vessels. Line a cute cardboard strawberry container from the farmers’ market with a squat jar, or fit a few flexible plastic cups inside a vintage cheese box, and you may have found your new favorite “vase.” And always, always make sure your vase is clean and filled with fresh, cold water. From The Flower Recipe Book (Artisan).

Continued from page 95 I plant fake flowers You never have to water them, or weed them either.... D.W. Even your question makes me smile. The thought of a colorful garden filled with impatiens, vinca, coleus, gerbera daisies, petunias and big hydrangeas is more appealing after this icy winter than ever! C.J. Call the gardener! L.M. Adding lots of coffee grounds to make the soil healthier. O.R. Adding more perennials. Besides being hardy, fast growing and shade loving, they are the essence of an “English garden”. Beautiful!
