I

like to read and I’m curious about words. When I come across an unfamiliar word in a book or article I can’t just skip over it and figure I’ll get the gist of the sentence without it. If my husband is around I’ll ask him first – his vocabulary is more extensive than mine. If not, I reach for my trusty red tome, The New College Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. This “new” edition was published in 1976 and was an afikoman gift to me from my also “new” brother-in-law in April 1978. And, yes, that is what I asked for. Okay, maybe a little nerdy. The dictionary is very worn. The spine cover has long ago separated from the book and although I taped it back several times, it somehow disconnected again and disappeared. A couple of pages have come loose and most are somewhat yellowed. Inside the front cover, though, is a beautiful and timeless message from by brother-in-law about the meaning of words and a wish for me to use the dictionary well throughout a long, fulfilling and healthy life. And I do, B”H. The dictionary sits on a kitchen shelf behind our dinette table and I reach for it often. While I am sure I can look up the meaning of any word on my computer or smart phone quicker, I still enjoy perusing a hard copy,

12

flipping pages, stopping here and there to examine one of the many featured margin illustrations or to test myself on the definition of a random word. Yes, I know, very nerdy. I am currently reading a book that one of my sisters recommended and although it is over 500 pages and my time is limited, I am engrossed by it and pick it up whenever possible. The story is compelling, the writing quality. But here’s the problem: The protagonist, his son, and many of the other featured characters are mathematicians. I have to admit, every other word is one with which I am unfamiliar. I’m not talking aerodynamics and quadratics or parabolic coordinates. I’m talking about words I can’t even pronounce, let alone fathom. I stopped reaching for my dictionary in the first chapter. I recognize that in this particular case I really don’t need to fully understand the meaning of every word I read but it got me thinking about how many varied and impressive professions are out there. And, honestly, about how many I wouldn’t have been able to pursue. When I was a little girl there were so many topics that interested me I wondered how one was ever able to choose a single course of interest. Before I narrowed down the field

Continued from page 12 to English and Art, I was very interested in archaeology. Much before that I thought I wanted to be an astronaut. Both my daughters are nurses today but the oldest was very passionate about becoming a veterinarian while the younger was excited about designing playgrounds. Go figure. I always believed that I could be whatever I wanted to be and had I wanted to become a lawyer or go to medical school I would have succeeded. I don’t know how easy it would have been for me to pursue my dream of working at NASA or how practical it would have been to live a life at exotic locations on back-breaking digs but both seem more attainable for me today than becoming a mathematician. Everyone has to know his or her limitations.

14

Even recognizing our individual strengths and weaknesses, talents and lack thereof, there are so many varied and unusual career options out there today, especially for women. Every job is legitimate. Many women still pursue “traditional” careers in education, nursing and office work for convenience sake or because it’s what they truly enjoy. But there is so much more to explore these days. I know someone who is an industrial psychologist. She spends much of her time choosing artwork for executive offices in large financial and legal firms. Who would have known that that was a viable option? I have a friend who recently became a ski instructor. Didn’t see that one coming! I have friends who are professors, others who are attorneys, financial planners, yoga instructors, therapists, Torah scholars, interior designers, high level administrators and

business owners. Still others are stay-at-home moms and don’t make the mistake of asking them if they work. Because of course they do – tirelessly. Perhaps not at official “jobs” out of the house but they are responsible for countless other projects be it within their own homes, at local shuls, their children’s schools or any number of non-profit organization they support. What’s exciting, though, is that many women these days first seek to pursue a career or look to change professions later in life – and with much success. Working women are all women – be they single, wives, mothers, grandmothers. They are always on the move, juggling their own loads, as well as that of others. “Multi-tasker” is a woman’s middle name. They are truly amazing and in this issue, and always, we salute you.

Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: CORK & SLICE

By: Rachel Rosenberg

S

ince my partner and I recently started our own law firm, this working woman has been delinquent in contributing to her favorite magazine. However, when I learned of the theme for this month’s Esra, I could not pass up the opportunity to offer my two cents on being both a working woman and a foodie. Here’s the thing; dieting, going to the gym and cooking gourmet home-cooked dinners are not for the working woman. Eating out frequently and making poor diet choices is what we working women tend to fall back on all too often. Let’s face it, preparing salad, soup and a filling protein dinner requires time and thought that we just don’t have. After a long day at work we want two things-– PIZZA and WINE (okay and sometimes chocolate)!! The newest restaurant to open in the 5 Towns, Cork & Slice, answered this working woman’s prayers. Cork & Slice is on Chestnut Street directly across from the Cedarhurst Long Island Railroad station. So commuting working women, feel free to stop in for pizza and a glass of the “vino of the month” straight from the train. The vibe is really great for a family night out or for a group of friends to unwind after work. The restaurant boasts a full bar with draft beers on tap, but the featured drink to complement your “slice” is the wine of the month, which can be ordered by the glass, half bottle or bottle. The walls have a brick rustic look. There are light wood floors and matching small rectangular tables. The menu includes Italian seafood, pasta and, of course, pizza. I started with a fried polenta cake filled with creamy haloumi cheese and smothered with marinated mushrooms. Incredibly, it tasted light and delicious. I also tried the shaved vegetable salad which was a really large serving for an appetizer. It was a play on a Greek salad with feta cheese, tahini dressing and chickpeas. If I ever did decide to diet, this dish could be a filling main. For my second course, I tried a Mezzaluna pasta stuffed with ricotta and mixed with butternut squash, brown butter and pomegranate. The heaviness of the pasta was perfectly balanced by the tangy pomegranate

seeds. The pizzas are baked in a brick oven which gives the dough that perfect crispy woodsy taste. I tried the Funghi which was topped with ricotta and mozzarella cheese and sprinkled with mushrooms and truffle oil. For dessert they had a banana bread pudding, so those who know me know that while the dish may have been incredible, I don’t eat anything with bananas. The only other dessert option was a halvah ice cream which was fantastic. The service at Cork & Slice is exactly what the working woman wants and needs – everybody caters to her.

hat is Coding? Coding is the new literacy! Giving the computer a set of instructions to follow is what coding is all about. Just like hundreds of years ago, people who could read and write controlled the future, now those who know how to code will shape the world we live in. You can use coding in every facet of your life, even if you don’t enter a job field that involves coding. You can use coding to make your own website or to program games. You can animate your YouTube videos, or make graphic designs. If you want your children to be part of one of the fastest growing job markets out there they need to jump on board! Over the last ten years growth in STEM jobs has been three times faster than growth in non-STEM fields, according to US Department of commerce. We know that our children love to play computer games so why not empower them with the knowledge of how to create the games too? Coding is not just about gaining a set of technical skills it’s a creative process, a way for people to organize, express and share their ideas. Our children can be contributors to this world of technology, not just be consumers. I showed my 8 year old grandson, who loves to play computer games, how to go the website and to create his own games and he loved it! It is as simple as having your kids go to the website https://code.org .This is an easy, interactive website that teaches children from age 7 to code through games. They won’t even realize that they are learning as they are playing. The more advanced can go to www.codcademy.com to learn HTML, Java Script and more computer languages to learn how to create Apps and Websites. Why is there is a new focus on Girls Who Code? The statistic shows that in middle school, three-fourths of girls say they are interested in science and math. But in high school, less than one percent show interest in majoring in computer science. In the 1970s some 37 percent of computer science students were women. By 2013, the percentage had fallen to 18 percent. Somehow girls are being discouraged from entering one of the most lucrative career paths. And as the founder of Girls who Code said “We’ve been sending messages to our girls that ‘You are not smart enough,’ Saujani said. “Why do we let our girls say they hate math?” Helping more students have careers in science is becoming crucial for the country’s economic progress. “There is no pay gap in science and engineering,” she said. “As women are increasingly becoming the bread-

MIND OVER MATTER:

The Working Mother

R

By Jennifer Mann, LCSW

ecently I was lurking around my Facebook newsfeed and saw an image of a woman feeding her baby while applying makeup to a model at a photo shoot. The caption read, “Working mothers can have it all.” The implication was that a mother who has to or chooses to work can be the best employee and the best mother at the same time. I couldn’t keep up with all the comments this image was generating. Some women scoffed at the image, claiming that women should stay at home with their children. They thought it was selfish to drag a child to a busy workplace and that there was no way on earth this woman’s attention wasn’t divided. Other women praised this woman for having it all, and lamented that they feel disoriented half the time. Other working mothers thought this image was ridiculous and a moving target that is part of the erroneous message that keeps working mothers feeling awful about themselves. A day in the life of a working mother: Wake up at an ungodly hour. Shower. Wake up kids for school. Run around looking for notebooks, kissing booboos, coaxing children onto bus. Ignore the mess in the house because you have to run to work (that is a hard job in itself). WORK, WORK. Take phone calls from childrens’ schools and make doctor appointments on lunch breaks. Check in with babysitter all day long. WORK, WORK and WORK some more. Get in the car. Run to supermarket. Run to Amazing Savings for child’s school project she texted you about which of course is due… you guessed it! Tomorrow! Come home, kiss booboos, wipe away tears, break up fights. Change into PJs (ha! That was a joke). Monitor homework. And if you’re a parent who does homework for her kids, do their homework (you know who you are!). Pack bags. Search for two hundred missing objects. You are a GPS after all. Supervise bath-time. Run a kid to karate, ballet and swing by parent teacher’s conference. Bedtime. If you have older kids in the house, you will be up talking to them all night because they go to bed later than you do. Sleep and repeat. Whew!! If your day resembles the circus act I just provided, then you, my dear are a superhero! Come, let me give you your cape! So, if we are superheroes, why do we always feel badly about ourselves, no matter how much we accomplish? When we are at work we are thinking about home and when are at home, we are thinking about work. We are led to believe that we working mothers can have it all. Sure… I’ll bring my baby to work while in a therapy session. If your kids are anything like some of mine, you can’t bring them to a grocery store, let alone to work! On those days when you’ve got it all together you feel like a million bucks. But what about the days when you’re running ten minutes late, you’ve got a kid who refuses to get on the bus and the baby was up all night with an ear infection? You haven’t showered, can’t find your

70

stockings, or a deep breath. You walk in the door after a long day and the barrage begins: “Ma! You forgot to get my pink oak tag for the mitzvah fair.” “Mommy, she hit me… she pinched me.” “Mommy, I wish you didn’t work and could be home for me like all the other girls’ mommies in my class.” Dagger to the heart. In these moments, we start to feel badly about ourselves. We question our decisions, and our motives. If you are working for fulfillment and not to make ends meet, you may feel especially guilty. But what if I told you in these moments the greatest antidote is self-acceptance and self-love? Like anything else, it can be practiced and achieved. The next time you find yourself feeling like you just can’t catch a break or get it right, try breathing. Slow down, notice your breaths going in and going out. Count to ten. (It really does work!) Tell yourself, “I am doing a fine job. I am setting a wonderful example for my children. Look at me. I’m pretty fabulous.” To those of you working because you want to work and not because you “have to,” you can tell yourselves “I am entitled to find my joy in life outside of my family. A happy and fulfilled mother is the best gift I can give to my children.” It’s not going to be perfect. The truth is we can have it all, but we can’t have it all, all of the time. Here is something I do that I find helpful. When I am at work, I am a worker bee. I am focused on being the best therapist I can be. I am not in Mommy mode. And when I come home, I try to be fully engaged as a mother. Emails, voicemails, text messages will wait until my little kids are in bed and my big kids are settled into their evenings and are winding down. I guess the old Jewish saying is true, “You can’t dance at two weddings at the same time.” The next time you feel bad or that your blood is about to boil, employ some self-care. I really can’t stress that enough. Women tell me all the time, “I don’t have time. You don’t understand. I can’t make it work.” I say, get a babysitter, get your mom or your mother-in-law, ask your husband to come home an hour early from work… and do your thing. Take a bubble bath, meet a friend, go to a gym class, hide in your closet with that magazine you’ve been meaning to get to. Mommies need a break too. No one is going to make this happen, other than yourself. I applaud all women and their choices and see the beauty and validity in working both in the home and out of the home. In this column, I salute your hard work, tenacity, creativity and “juggalability.” I also honor the meltdowns, the guilt, the nights spent crying, feeling that you aren’t enough or wishing you could spend more time with your children, or maybe secretly being grateful you have work as an escape. Maybe it’s all just perfectly human and par for the course. You are doing your best, setting a wonderful example for your children and you are more than enough. Here’s to you! Sincerely, Jennifer Jennifer is a licensed psychotherapist working with individuals, families and couples. Her office is located at 1226 West Broadway, Hewlett, NY 11557. O.J. all, but I still like running a tight ship, being responsible, having high standards, and My first job after high school was working for a small jewelry officegetting in the Diamond Center. I was going to Brooklyn College every night and worked four days a it all done quickly! M.S. week in a small room on a high floor with no one else my age or gender. I hated it. Basically I was hired to change dirty diapers. Not enjoyable at all!

My next job was in real estate. Not much better but at least it was a storefront and I saw the light of day. It took a few more false starts before I landed a job in a Manhattan publishing firm which I loved. T.C.

When I read something unjust I write a letter to the editor. When I see something can be Afternoon and Sunday morning Hebrew School teacher. I dreaded every minimproved, I write a letter to the company. When ute!! T.B. something is beyond inappropriate I will write About 30 years ago I worked in a wig store. I was a wig washer. Wasn’t a a comment or review. My husband would rather great job… B.H. I Working did nothing and kept quiet. He says “your the night shift in the chicken coop in kibbutz. L.M. letter won’t change a thing”. which isn’t true. I When I was waitressing during college to pay for rent. S.W. have had marvelous results with some of my Custard mixer at“letters”, the plattentorte “comments”, factory. L.E. “reviews”, etc. I simply cannot be quiet inschool, the Iface S.W. After graduating from law workedof for astupidity. large firm in Manhattan. The

hours were long, the work was hard, the partners were intimidating and I was always anxious. Being a first year associate was a rite of passage – but there was nothing enjoyable about it except the paycheck. D.R.

My persistence!

Working in a day camp as a floater! They put me wherever they wanted and I did any job they asked of me... I did it so my kids could go to camp. Then I came home and went straight to graduate school two nights a week without having time to change out of my silly camp t-shirt! J.M.

I’m overly organized and detail oriented and my husband is certainly not. I shudder to think what our lives would look like if I didn’t Teaching an adult computer science course to a classroom full of scientific georganize for the us!walking in there niuses who wereeverything clearly more knowledge than I.two I usedof to dread every time! C.J. T.B. I’ve had moments in my job that I didn’t enjoy but I’ve never held a job I didn’t enjoy. I never thought about that before! I’m lucky. B.C.

I’m flawless!! All of them.
