t is 1:34am motzai Shabbos. After four hours of straitening up – not that I am done yet – I finally collapse onto my kitchen tassel-patterned chair. It’s not that I finished cleaning, it’s just that with a laundry load in the dryer and the second dishwasher cycle still running I can’t yet go to bed so I might as well take a load off and try to write. My younger daughter was here for Shabbos with her husband and two children. I had another three people over for Friday night dinner. Hardly a massive crowd but still the house is a tornado. Okay, by my standards. Perhaps some people would simply view the mess as a small storm. I am hardly a neat freak. Unfortunately you can’t eat off my floors most days – unless it’s after the grandchildren have been here and then you can start with a Cheerios breakfast and find sustenance for both lunch and dinner between my kitchen and dining room floors. I would not invite
12
you ever to conduct a white glove test on the top of my bookcases or closet shelves. Yet I do like things orderly. Knowing this my daughter tries really hard to leave the house as she found it but it is late when she packs up to go back to her Queens home Saturday night. The kids are either sleeping and need to be carefully transferred or overtired and tantrumming. There are always a dozen bags for them to pack up and load into the car, from their suitcases and diaper bag to clean laundry, leftovers, mail, gifts and much more. They were here for little over twenty-five hours and and every room in the house can prove it. I am exaggerating. It really isn’t that bad and it isn’t all them. With even one extra person as a guest for a meal the preparation becomes more elaborate, the pots and dirty dishes increased.

Continued from page 12 And little kids just have a way of spreading out. As I walk around the house I pick up a single minuscule sock from a chair, a pacifier from under the crib (sure hope they’ve got a spare at home), a headband from the dining room table… I roll back the yards of unraveled toilet paper in the guest lavatory and sweep up the Cheerios that managed to escape the previous half a dozen sweepings since breakfast. I tend to note every disturbance in the field. I can’t help it. If the den is impressively neat my eyes will still immediately gravitate to the orange block under the lounger or in the barely

touched living room the empty sport bottle on the stroller. It’s my issue. Clearly not anyone else’s. So I walk around from room to room, floor to floor, picking up, realigning, wiping and refolding. I save the kitchen for last. Even without company my kitchen never looks the way I want it to. Nothing to do with the fact that after three decades in the house we still have not ‘done’ our kitchen. I’m talking about the disarray. My husband is both a spreader-outer and a holder-onto. So we have piles of books and mail on the hutch and counter as well as a store-worthy display of sunglasses and candy, keys and pharmaceuticals. While I’d like nothing better than to bring over
SUMMER 2016, Esra | EsraMagazineOnline.com
the trash bin and sweep 90% of his collectibles into it I know I’d better not. As an only resort I neaten the piles up, consolidate some of the accessories, try to slip a book or two back into the den bookcase. Although I’ve swept the floor yet again and Clorax-wiped the stains I still manage to find and crush a remaining Cheerio as I step closer to the water cooler. Speaking of stepping, my Fit Flops seem to be sticking to the floor with every step. It is 2:23. I am not washing the floor now. I walk (smack, smack go my shoes), over to the last remaining surface to be tackled, my kitchen table, to gather the papers that have accumulated during
the weekend looking for something I can toss out. As I go through the stack I find an unfamiliar stapled, colorful two page newsletter with smiling kiddie figures on the upper right corner and Ohel Yitzchok Toddler Weekly printed in a bright rectangular box on top. For a moment I am not sure what this is and then I notice the dozen or more photos on the bottom of the first page and my nearly three-year-old granddaughter’s smiling face looking right up at me. A weekly roundup from her gan. They must have left it here when they packed up.

Setting Screen Limits
N
by Shuly Rubel
ot all screens are created equal. How to determine how much screen time is too much – and what’s just right – is challenging for many parents. Kids spend nearly 7.5 hours per day with media. Balancing media usage is an essential part of growing up. When it comes to screen time, both quality and quantity matter. Our kids are growing up in front of screens. From smartphones to gaming devices to the ever-present computer, our kids seem mesmerized by them. According to a Kaiser Foundation study, kids as young as 8 are spending nearly 7.5 hours per day consuming media. That’s not surprising. Video games, Facebook, the Internet, and even TV – they all seem so much more interesting than, say, doing homework. But studies have shown that all of this screen time can impact everything from kids’ health to their school readiness. The solution isn’t as simple as turning everything off. There’s a huge difference between an hour spent shooting zombies in Zombie Duck Hunt and the same amount of time spent learning vocabulary from a smartphone app or composing music online. In today’s 24/7 digital world, learning to balance media usage has become an essential part of growing up. Just as kids learn not to eat too much candy, they must learn how to manage their media diets. While it helps to start when your kids are young, it’s never too late to teach them how to recognize when enough is enough. As parents, we need to guide our children toward activities that help them learn, stimulate their interests, and express their creativity. The task then becomes separating the mindful from the mindless. Following these simple steps will greatly help you and your kids manage – and even optimize – screen time.
TIPS FOR ALL KIDS Set an example. Do you hand your kid a smartphone in restaurants, keep the TV on during dinner, or check your email constantly? It’ll be harder to teach your kids how to balance media usage if they don’t see you doing the same. Set limits. Parents can help kids develop self-control by working with them to create a

schedule that incorporates all of the things they need to do in a day. Make sure that homework, hobbies, and good learning games come first. And you may want to schedule in some downtime. Childhood development experts say it’s good for kids to be idle – and maybe even bored. Those moments allow for introspection and the development of self-awareness. Get involved. Remember, not all screens are created equal – so make sure you know what your kids are doing. Take the time to sit down and play their favorite game with them or look at their latest digital creation. Once you have a sense of their interests, you can help them make better decisions about what they watch, play, and do. Plus, the more involved you are with your kids’ digital lives, the better conversations you can have with them about their media choices. Back To School is a stressful time in everyone’s house. Parents are always looking to prepare their children with the right tools with which to begin the school year. Hope these tips can help you guide your children to balance their screen time appropriately.

Epicurean Excursions With Rachel: COURTSIDE GRILL
By: Rachel Rosenberg
F
or a mom of three boys, back to school means back to football. On Sundays, Mondays and sometimes Thursdays, it is hard to schedule anything or go out to eat anywhere because it might interfere with the “game” that my kids want to watch. Enter, Courtside Grill in Cedarhurst on Central Avenue where the game is the main attraction, but the food is not secondary. The restaurant used to be occupied by Off the Grill and then more recently by Brasserie Halevi. The new owners did not change the layout of the space which includes a bar at the front, which now pours various beers on tap and a few wines. The restaurant no longer serves hard liquor or cocktails. The entry level still has a few booths and tables and then a couple of steps up there is a second tier with tables. The major change to the restaurant is the addition of over thirty televisions playing only sports. The walls are decorated with sports memorabilia. A basketball hoop surrounded by lights hangs over the kitchen door and a large electronic scoreboard hangs above the booths. The friendly servers are all dressed in referee uniforms. I decided to pick an exciting sports night to get courtside seats at Courtside Grill and went with my three sons and husband on the night of Game 7 of the NBA Championships, Warriors v. Cavaliers. It was a busy night and only their second week since opening so I can forgive the wait we experienced before being seated and subsequently for the arrival of our food and drinks. As we were there for the whole game, we were in no rush to eat and run. The menu includes classic sports food such as wings, nachos, hot dogs and burgers and the less typical chicken waffles and fish tacos. What I really appreciated were the accommodations to menu and plating that they immediately offered for my picky eaters. The Southern Fried Pickles were by far my favorite dish on the menu. The pickles were crispy and dill flavored and coated with a light breading. They were served with a tangy dipping sauce, that
38
try as I might, I could not stop dipping. Hey, if you are eating fried pickles, this is not the time to be weight watching. The deep fried wings could be ordered with a choice of buffalo, honey buffalo, honey bbq, thai chili or mango habanero sauce. I chose the buffalo sauce because I like my wings spicy. It was spicier than I expected with a real kick to each bite. It came with a side of sliced carrots and celery which I found ridiculous. Again, if you are eating fried wings….. There were lighter options, such as the fish tacos. All the portions were generous, but this appetizer came with three medium-sized soft shell tortillas filled with a flaky and moist grilled white fish topped with a house made coleslaw. There was a creamy sauce drizzled on top of the slaw, which in the future I will request they leave off. The menu also includes three token salads all of which can be served with grilled chicken or salmon. My boys had the traditional hot dog which was accompanied by a very large portion of fries. In general the pricing at Courtside Grill is quite reasonable. The bill for the five of us, which included a number of beers, appetizers, mains and desserts, was less than a table for two in certain other upscale meat kosher restaurants. A perfect example of what I deem good value was the tremendous portion of fries and hot dog for $8.95. One of my boys ordered two hot dogs which is what he normally orders in other fast food restaurants. The portion size of the fries left dinner for him for the next night too. For the main dishes we ordered a chili burger and a steak sandwich. Both hefty sized portions and also served with fries. While I did not try the fried chicken served over the Belgian red velvet waffle, I had to try the waffle with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The waffle was perfectly cooked and a bright red color. It was topped with chocolate syrup. My boys couldn’t resist the “triple play” brownie made up of cookie dough, oreos and brownies topped with vanilla ice cream. The desserts were the perfect ending to a great meal and a consolation prize as our team lost the game. Overall, we had a blast at Courtside Grill. The tables were all filled with young teens and dads out to watch the game together. I will definitely be returning to Courtside Grill. Let’s go JETS!! Rachel Rosenberg, a practicing attorney and name partner at Rosenberg and Steinmetz PC, is known amongst friends and family as an accomplished chef and daring foodie with a critical eye and discerning palate. She lives in Woodmere with her husband and three sons.

MIND OVER MATTER
Jennifer Mann, LCSW Psychotherapist
Back to School
A
s I sit here writing Mind Over Matter for Esra’s September edition, it is May 30 th, Memorial Day Weekend. We are looking toward the end of the school year and toward those wonderful summer months of freedom. These columns are written two months in advance, and this one is forcing me to look toward September and going back to school. I have a little secret for you. I, like so many parents, much prefer the summer months… the long days, the sunshine, the lack of homework and responsibility. Our children get to be children and enjoy themselves off the routine. And as a result, I get a taste of my own childhood…. With my older children in camp my responsibilities feel more than halved, they feel exponentially less. Going back to school is not just about the kids. When they go back … we go back. Setting routines, helping with homework, picking up a thousand and one supplies, dealing with that one teacher who doesn’t seem to understand our child…. But I know, as this column goes to press, I will be so sick of the summer and the freedom, I will be fantasizing about going back to school! Those two weeks or so in between camp and school can feel like an eternity. Too much freedom, too much time to bicker, too much time to be “bored.” (By the way, when my children tell me how bored they are, I remind them that bored is for boring people… it’s been working). Because my readers are mostly women, I am providing you with a Mommy Checklist to keep yourselves sane and intact as you prepare to send your children back to school. Rate yourselves on a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being “I’m cool as a cucumber, I’ve got this” and 10 being “ALERT: MOMMY OVERLOAD! DANGER, DANGER… RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!” After you go through the Mommy Checklist, we will talk about coping strategies to manage your feelings. MOMMY CHECKLIST: 1. School supplies bought and packed. 2. Getting back into a good sleeping schedule one to two weeks before school starts. 3. A pledge to not be a “helicopter mom” this year and allow my child to experience failure. 4. A commitment to take care of myself and

718.908.0512 tend to my needs. I recognize that in order to be a successful mother who can provide for her children, I need to take care of myself. When I feel myself getting overwhelmed, that is my internal guide telling me it is time to take a Mommy Time Out. 5. Happy, stress-free children are more important than a clean house or organic lunches worthy of an Instagram account. 6. If I am married, I will not neglect my husband because I know that my children will benefit more from their parents’ loving relationship than from me going to Michael’s or Amazing Savings for the seventh time because they forgot puffy paint. How did you score? If you have mostly 1’s or close to it, you are ready to go back to school. If you’ve scored 10s or near that neighborhood, you need a Mommy Time Out. Sometimes it’s about a perspective readjustment, seeing a therapist, or just making yourself a priority. Sometimes the best therapy is a manicure, a cookie or a cleaning woman. Happy Back to School everyone! Wishing you and yours a wonderful school year! Sincerely, Jennifer

Continued from page 15 I read through the brightly decorated sheets and discover that the toddlers have been counting the Omer, excitedly getting close to Shavuos, wrapping up their unit on colors and shapes and are gearing up for graduation this week. Graduation!! That’s right. My daughter told me to hold the date June 8th at 10:00 am for a special performance. My granddaughter’s first graduation. While she is not yet three and it is only pre-school it is still a milestone – for her, her parents and me. You also may be heading to a graduation this month – perhaps your child’s, grandchild’s niece or nephew’s. Perhaps from gan, elementary school, high school, college or beyond. It’s an exciting time for the whole family and a milestone to cherish. By the time you read this magazine the graduations will be over and – I hesitate to say – we will be thinking about back-to-school again. Hard to imagine right now. As long as that’s the reality, though, make sure to take this Back-toSchool ESRA issue with you for all your shopping needs. Or check us out online. Okay. 2:57. Time to log off and say good night. Have a great summer!
