e are sitting around the light oak kitchen table (also known as the dining room table), eating delicious, home-made, thincrust pizza and comparing weather reports and storm warnings appearing on our small phones and tablets. Hurricane Hermine is making her way up the Eastern coastline and they are requesting a voluntary evacuation from Fire Island by 1:00 pm tomorrow. It is 11:15 pm and we are on a Labor Day holiday weekend with friends who own a home on the Island. I’ve definitely mentioned these wonderful pals and their incredible hospitality before. It is because of them some of our otherwise ho-hum summers have turned into enjoyable memories. It took us many attempts this summer, due to a variety of circumstances and obligations, to find a weekend that worked for us all. We usually start off the summer with a Memorial Day weekend together and, unbelievably, have been doing it now for fifteen straight years. This year, however, one delay after another pushed our summer “trip”

off. So here it is pretty much the end of the season and we finally made it. And now Hermine is coming our way and has other plans for us. In the past we would culminate our weekend with an evening bar-b-que and then, after leisurely packing up, catch a ferry back to Bayshore where our cars were parked for the weekend. From there it is a 45 minute drive home. All told, Fire Island is only about one and a half hours away but there is something about the tranquil Ocean Beach drive and the half hour ferry ride that makes you feel like you are truly traveling to another realm. So now we sit and try to figure our game plan. We must recalculate. Thankfully, we have managed to visit and partake of the town’s Hershey’s ice cream parlor and have enjoyed our gourmet pizza tonight – two must-dos when on the Island. Phew! But it looks as though our Sunday plans are thwarted. As we walked through town this evening already many people were loading their red wagons and shopping carts and were

heading off to the ferry, casting anxious eyes up at the sky. Other years we had the option of staying over until Monday evening since none of us had work on the National holiday. We have never exercised that option preferring to give our friends a day to themselves. This year it wasn’t even a consideration as we all have a good friend’s wedding Monday afternoon back on the mainland. However, we had banked on Sunday to give us plenty of time to run (not me), sun, read, walk on the beach and relax. The best laid plans clearly don’t always work out. So we will head back home early tomorrow. Not a tragedy. But still. When most people hear the word ‘travel’ they think

luxurious and exciting adventures. Although many of my travels have turned out to be adventures, some even exciting, not too many were luxurious. It’s been many years since my husband and I took a trip by ourselves to a “destination” location for pure vacation purposes. Over the last decade or so our big trips have been to Israel – wonderful but not necessarily relaxing. Small, occasional trips were to my sister’s home in Florida for Pesach – also wonderful but since we shop and cook and clean (not to mention eat way too much), I wouldn’t call them luxurious. And then there are our summer Fire Island getaways. The house is not large, the bathroom situation not ideal but again a wonderful

opportunity for an escape we would otherwise never experience. So where do your travels take you? Some people have enthusiastically seen the world while others have no interest at all. Some travel so often for business that their favorite place to veg is at home in their own beds. Some people need nothing more than a trip to a Manhattan museum to take them away for the day and recharge their batteries. Wherever and however your travels take you, may they only be for good reason and may you return safely.

Well we flew to Bozeman, Montana but then drove through Wyoming to Custer’s Last Stand on to South Dakota to Mount Rushmore and from there to Rapid City to fly home… I would easily do it again. S.W. Since my husband doesn’t love to drive and he doesn’t like me to drive, we don’t take long road trips. The farthest we’ve driven together is to Baltimore, and that wasn’t even vacation related. We lived there for 4 years after we were married. T.B. Toronto; every chance I get!

Nine hours to Acadia National Park - to Virginia- to Toronto - furthest we’ve driven. Definitely all worth it. Almost easier than dealing with flying, check-in, and security lines! C.J. We traveled to Bar Harbor, Maine with 4 kids in tow. No iPads or iphones or laptops, for that matter. But, we did have music, tons of snacks, loads of car games and moose spotting. I’m sure there were plenty of spats and grumbling, but the overall memory makes me nostalgic for a simpler time. I would do it again in a heartbeat. D.R. While we loved the greenery and gorgeous lake views, the thought of packing up and facing the long drive back to the city each Sunday afternoon became overwhelming, so if the house sells, then no, we won’t do it again. MIND OVER MATTER: Staycations Jennifer Mann, LCSW

T

he benefits of travel are undeniable. And since those of us traveling are already getting those benefits, this travel edition of Mind Over Matter will be devoted to those of us who will not be traveling this winter. How can we “staycationers” get some of those benefits? I’m going to present you with the psychological and emotional benefits of travel and then give you some ideas as to how to create the magic at home… on a STAYCATION. Travel away from home gives people geographical distance between themselves and their “problems.” Though running away from our problems never works (they come with), getting away does create some geographical space between you and your problem. If your problem is your coworker… well, you won’t be seeing her on your vacation. If your stress is bad marital communication, a trip with girlfriends will create some space between you and this negative communication. Studies show that time away in a new environment, creates new neural pathways which allow the “traveler” to approach the problem differently when she returns. Ever feel refreshed and ready to tackle an old project, or deal with an ex best friend when you return from a trip? It’s because of what is known as the “expanded self.” On vacation, we are trying new things, eating new foods, meeting new people. It’s those new neural pathways created in the new environment that are giving you a sense of invigoration. We glean from this that travel away from home allows people to return to their regularly scheduled lives with a new, fresh attitude. And sometimes a new approach can actually help you make changes and deal with your issue more effectively. OK… so what about those of us staying home? I’ll have some of that please! You don’t need to go on a fancy vacation to get this benefit. Take a new way home from work. Buy a new cut of meat at the supermarket. Get crazy and shop at a different supermarket. Visit a beautiful new town or have lunch with a new friend. Have a new experience. It will activate the same part of the brain that is activated on vacation. Change it up! The next benefit of travel (and I didn’t research this one, folks), is the shopping you will do. Visiting a beach? You may need a new sunhat. Going skiing? You’ll probably buy

yourself an adorable new pair of gloves or skis. While excessive shopping can be detrimental to your wallet and mental health (think shopping addiction), shopping in moderation is quite another story. Buying something new is exciting. It sends a message to ourselves, I am worth it. Give yourself permission to treat yourself to something. You don’t have to wait for a reason. Often, women have a hard time justifying a reason to treat themselves to something special. You don’t need a vacation to justify buying something for yourself. Make yourself a priority and see how others will do the same. And finally, the last benefit we will discuss is RELAXATION. I am fantasizing about the last real vacation I took with my husband, many years ago, as I write this. I had no desire to do anything other than lie on the beach or by the pool. Of course I compromised and we took a local bus to visit the nearest town. I am that person by the pool that just lies there without a book. I love listening to palm trees rustling in the wind or enjoying the sound of the ocean and the sun on my skin. If this isn’t in your forecast this winter, don’t accept your fate that you won’t be able to relax. When we travel we are carving out time to relax. It feels more justified because hey, we’re on vacation. But you can relax at home too. I know it is hard and I am hearing the responses…. “Is she kidding? I have so much to do. I can’t relax.” Sometimes I go down that road as well. And the truth is, most of us are so busy these days and we don’t have time to relax. If you don’t have the time, you have to create the time. No one is going to hand you RELAXATION on a silver platter or insist that you get away. You create it for yourself. Maybe you’ll take a yoga class on Tuesday evenings or book a massage once a month. People think these things are frivolous or a waste of time or money. I say, au contraire. These are the activities that will keep your stress under control and protect you from the nasty physical side effects of stress. Traveling abroad is wonderful. But if you can’t do it, don’t fret. You can have a fabulous staycation. Sincerely, Jennifer

E

PS – If the barrage of pictures and videos appearing in your FB newsfeed or IG account of friends and family on their fabulous vacations is making you have the blues, now is a great time to get off of social media for a while. Have a social media cleanse. A Journey to the Work Force?

raveling can mean different things to different people and at different times. Sometimes a journey is not about going to a place but rather exploring a new opportunity. Looking for a job can be a daunting journey for anyone, but it’s especially scary for many adults who haven’t worked outside their homes in years. It can be an exciting trip and a true adventure but fraught with legitimate concerns. Those returning to the workforce almost feel like they are in a new time zone. They worry about lacking the latest skills and competing against candidates with current experience. If you are embarking on this kind of journey, rest assured you are not alone. Before getting ready for your “trip” be prepared. It’s important to know some of the hesitations and concerns on the minds of employers with whom you may be meeting. Computer literacy is now viewed as a must-have for office workers, from receptionists to executives. And while many workers have embraced the computer revolution, others haven't taken the time to acquire these skills and find themselves dealing with the consequences, especially after a layoff or when trying to return to the workforce. First you have to Conquer Your Fear – many back to work adults are afraid of the computer and the only way to conquer their fear is to sign up for a computer class and empower themselves with computer skills that will advance them in the workplace. Also a common stumbling block comes down to a person's attitude toward acquiring workplace skills. Some older workers, especially those who worked for one company for many years, may think of training as an employer's responsibility. Older workers sometimes have an attitude that they if didn't have to know that skill before there’s no need to learn it now. The reality is if they want to continue to work they need to update their skills and it is their responsibility to do so. What Computer Skills Should You Have? Workers aiming to become computer-literate should focus on: • Basic computer skills, such as using a mouse, typing on a keyboard, and navigating file systems and menus. • Microsoft Office programs, with particular attention to Word, Excel and PowerPoint /Prezi. • Essential Internet skills, such as email, web browsing and searching. Excel is the most important computer software program used in the workforce today. That's why so many workers and employees are required to learn Excel in order

Continued from page 78 to enter or remain in the workplace. Many business professionals use Excel to perform everyday functional tasks in the workplace. If you own your own business or have a home office you can use Excel to calculate sales tax on a purchase, input your inventory, do an analysis of inputted data, track your debt, income and assets, calculate your net worth and use that data to prepare the process of applying for a mortgage on a new house. Excel can be customized to perform certain functions that many small businesses can’t function without. Therefore, Excel training has become mandatory in many work-

80

places and Microsoft Office training has become a must for any workplace trying to keep up with the times. These are just some of the basic skills required in most job places today. If the job you are looking for is in a specialized field you may be required to be familiar with other more specific computer knowledge and skills. All beginnings are hard and all new adventures come with challenges. But as with most travels, the journey into a new workplace can be an exciting one worth the trip.
