ometimes the holidays “fall early” and sometimes, like this year, they “fall late.” Some years we have to prepare for a three day run. Other times, again, like this year, it’s shorter but with more frequent sessions. No matter how it comes out it is a month of endless shopping, cooking, serving and straightening. If it seems like every other day we are back in the kitchen it’s because we are. And if you are also hosting or entertaining guests the tasks multiply. Don’t get me wrong. I love the start of the new year. It is a solemn and meaningful time for us yet with great promise and beautiful festivities. However, if you are someone who is in school or works outside the house it is a month where many responsibilities must be put on hold or at the very least, juggled masterfully. The holiday season is also a time when our houses often take on a weather-beaten look. Some would describe their abodes at this time of year as having been hit by a hurricane or touched by a tornado. One of my friend always says, when her kids move in for the celebratory days, "my house is a storm." The stuff that gathers in your home during the holiday

12

season depends a lot on whether your kids, parents, siblings, guests etc., live nearby or a car drive or plane flight away. If they are sleep-over as opposed to walk-over company and children are involved, the house becomes a mini day care center featuring strollers, playpens, high chairs, bouncers, exer-saucers. and more. On the other side of the coin you may find your house suddenly embellished with walkers, canes, wheelchairs and commodes. We were blessed – and I mean this 100% sincerely and am so grateful – with both styles of decor. At times like this, when my house, which is an adequate size, seems to be bursting at the seams with not an inch of free space, I have learned to turn a blind eye. Eye not eyes. One eye needs to be open – at least partially – to avoid tripping on the equipment and accessories that adorn each room. I have learned not to pick up every little thing that falls because it will just fall again. I don’t try too hard to straighten up because I know within minutes whatever I’ve just put back

Continued from page 12 will be brought right back out again. While I do close open cabinets, and wipe up spills (real hazards), I usually am pretty chilled and know there will be plenty of time to clean up when everyone has gone home and my house is suddenly empty and lonely and quiet again. One thing I have yet to get a handle on, though, is the toys. As I’ve mentioned previously – perhaps even multiple times – my house is the home depot of my family, especially when it comes to toys. Every over-sized, dangerous, not ageappropriate, duplicate and multi pieced game eventually parks itself in my den or basement. I get it. My older daughter moved to Israel with bare essentials. Clearly toys and games didn’t

14

make the cut. My younger daughter lives in a small apartment in Queens and while she hopes to move to a house soon, right now, facing the daunting task of moving, the last thing she wants is a bunch of clumsy, beeping, many-part toys around to have to pack up as well. So the really big items clutter my basement and the medium to small stuff is stacked all over in my den. As opposed to the messes that build up when company is around, this stuff does not leave with its owners. Nor do I have a place to store it all even when things quiet down and I can straighten up again. But you know what? This too I have come to accept, if not ignore. Or maybe I’ve come to ignore if not accept. Whatever. But still I have a dilemma.

Continued from page 14 In several weeks we will be celebrating the festival of lights – Chanukah. Likely most children’s favorite holiday. While Chanukah gelt is a fine gift – an appropriate gift – kids like stuff and we like to make our kids happy. And let’s get real. The stuff they are looking for is not a new winter hat with matching gloves. What to get that is not too flashy, bulky, trendy, complicated, heavy and yet, fun? My mom used to say that kids – okay, little kids – often prefer the boxes things come in to the things themselves, that they enjoy tinkering with typical kitchen items over fancy games. Along those lines, last week when my Queens grandchildren were here for the weekend, I could not get the adorable one year old

16

to stay in the den despite the fact that there were dozens and dozens of entertaining toys in the room. She kept crawling and cruising into the kitchen while I was chopping a salad. From the kitchen there are two dangerous staircases she loves to climb. One can be gated, the other, due it its odd placement and thin banister, cannot. Every few minutes I had to put the knife down and catch her before she got to the first step. Why wasn’t she absorbed with the myriad of activities in the den? I suddenly remembered the stories my mom told me and opened my kitchen cabinet to pull out a few Tupperware containers and lids. Then from a drawer in front of me I took out a ring of plastic measuring spoons, a couple of honey

She let me finish the salad and attend to other kitchen chores while she happily played with the odds and ends I had tossed her way. Hmmm. COMPUTERS ONE ON ONE:

No Longer Child’s Play

H

By Shuly Rubel

and a toddler a tablet, or a cell phone, and watch how he or she quickly, instinctively, swipes one way and the other, examines this new ‘toy’ with curiosity, and in no time at all is playing a game. Children aren’t intimidated by the technology – for them it’s literally ‘child’s play.’ Not so the grownups. The same woman who can whip up a kokosh cake and the fanciest dinner with style, hands her phone or any other device to the nearest child – her own, her grandchild – and leaves it to them to make it work. Sound familiar? So why bother? The answer is simple: Computers are all around us. Very little is done today without the use of a computer. We use them at work, we use them to shop, we use them to communicate, we use them to organize our lives. And when they work well, they are a great tool. The problem is that for many women computers are intimi-

38

dating. The good news is that computers are actually designed to be ‘user friendly.’ That means that you don’t have to be particularly technologically gifted to learn how to make those computers work for you. Think about it. You have all those photos that your children or grandchildren share with you. You would love to organize them, now you can. You have all those documents that are important, now you can save them. You have those bills you need to keep copies of, all doable, and without the clutter. Maybe you would like to get a job, maybe you already have one, and everyone expects you to be comfortable using the computer, to be able to communicate easily and to be able to work efficiently. There is no question that computer skills are essential in today’s world. So can you – mother, grandmother, great-grandmother – actually do it? Can you acquire computer skills at this point in your life? Not only can you do it, but you can have fun doing it as well. The New Seminary and DAAT recently offered an EXCEL class – beginners and advanced. The women who took the class practically danced out of there. They were full of confidence, excited at the ease with which they mastered one of the more sophisticated programs of Microsoft Office. And they were proud that they earned Certificates of Proficiency in EXCEL. Other women are now coming to join the “world of today” by taking a quick class in Computer Literacy. And others are lining up to learn Microsoft Word – from beginners to advanced. All the classes are designed to provide a first-rate learning experience, to make sure that all the students leave knowing that they can really do it. The students, women who are capable in every other area of their lives, now know that computers are no longer a mystery to them. Classes are deliberately kept small – this allows every student to learn and every student to succeed. Chanukah is the perfect time to give that woman in your family, or a friend, the gift of a class in Computer Literacy, Word, Excel, Power Point, or other areas of computers. Take the first step and you will see how easy it is to succeed. Before you know it, your kids and your grandchildren will be surprised at how much you can do completely on your own. You might even be able to teach them a thing or two. Logging off, Shuly

Chocolate Crunch Gelt When Chanukah rolls around, having homemade gelt, or chocolate “money,” makes the memories that much more fun! And this way you can avoid the refined sugar, dairy and other unnecessary additives. You’ll need a gelt mold for this! Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Makes: 4 servings • 1 cup (180 g) chocolate chips • 1 tablespoon(15 ml) coconut oil • 1/2 teaspoon 100% vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon (or more) coconut palm sugar In a double boiler, over barely simmering water, melt the chocolate and coconut oil. Alternatively, you may melt in the microwave for 30-second intervals, stirring in between heating sessions until melted. Next, stir in the vanilla and coconut palm sugar and spoon the mixture into the gelt molds. Place the filled mold into the freezer for about 10-15 minutes or until the coins have solidified and set. Remove the tray from the freezer and pop out the chocolate coins. Refill the tray with any remaining melted chocolate mixture. Repeat the steps above.

MIND OVER MATTER:

What is “Play Therapy”?

W

Robin Daar, LCSW, RN

e live in turbulent times and children are exposed to experiences we wish we could protect them from. When young children struggle with their feelings about these issues they may present with behavior problems or simply behaviors that are not typical for their age. Like adults, children have to work through their struggles and unlike adults, they have fewer tools to work with. Young children also have difficulty expressing themselves therefore they cannot always say what it is that’s bothering them, if they even know what it is. There are many different types of therapy for children. One type of therapy is called “Play Therapy.” Most people have an idea of what play therapy looks like but rarely understand its significance. In this type of treatment all that needs to happen is for the child to enter the therapist’s office and stay for forty-five minutes. What occurs in the therapist’s office, to the uninformed eye, does not look like much. What is actually happening there is that the therapist, through play is engaging the child, is trying to understand the child’s inner workings and help the child work through his feelings. One can learn about a child’s inner world by interacting in the shared environment of the consulting room. The same setting can elicit many different reactions from children. Every therapist sets up his or her space differently. There is usually a myriad of toys, games, arts and crafts projects and sand. How a space is set up is imperative to getting that struggling child to want to be there. Once they are there is when the work begins. The aim of play therapy is to decrease those behavioral and emotional difficulties that interfere significantly with the child’s functioning. A goal of this therapy is to improve communication between child and parents. Less obvious goals are improved verbal expression, ability for self observation, improved impulse control, more adaptive ways of coping with anxiety and frustration and improved capacity to trust and to relate to others. How does play therapy work? Initially the clinician will meet with the parents to get an understanding of the presenting problem. Background information about the parents’ and child’s home life is collected as this provides the clinician with a larger context in which to understand the child. How long it takes to get a complete history depends on the parents but it is usually 1-2 sessions. Then appointments are set up. The structure and day of

70

the sessions is maintained in a consistent manner in order to create stability and safety for the child (and parent). The process of play therapy is divided into 3 phases: 1.Initial phase: the evaluation and explaining to the child and the parent about the process of therapy. 2.Middle phase: the period in which the child becomes comfortable with the treatment process and the clinician. During this phase the therapist is continuing to evaluate the child and develop a means of communicating with him. 3.Final phase: the process of ending treatment and saying good bye. The middle phase is where most of the work gets done. Important in this phase is that the child understand he can play with anything or say anything. He is also informed that anything said will not be repeated unless there is a possibility of harm to him or anyone else. Children communicate their feelings and thoughts through play. The clinician sees therapy a little like a dream. It offers a portal into the child’s mind. Like dreams, children’s play is infinitely complex. Deciphering the many layers of a child’s dream is challenging, which is why consistency with sessions is a must. How is play therapeutic to the child? It is in the therapist office that the child has undivided attention and is able to “play out” their feelings. The goal is that the child, after “playing out” their feelings, no longer presents with them. This is a process and can take some time. Sometimes this does not happen and therapy does not alleviate the symptoms. That usually occurs if the child is resistant or the child’s ways of coping are so rigid that it’s not possible at this time for them to learn new adaptive ones. There is always the possibility that medication may be suggested in conjunction with the ongoing sessions. Another part of therapy is the relationship that develops between parents and therapist. A meeting between the two should happen regularly in order to get an update on the child as well as give suggestions to parents about how to help their child. Children are complex creatures. Anyone who has raised a child can attest to that. What they also know is that sometimes a behavior is temporary and passes on its own. When that does not happen parents are hopefully open to bringing their children to some type of therapy. All of us hope our children become the best they can be and that they grow up to be good, happy and adaptive adults. In a perfect world raising our children should be enough to achieve that goal. In this world sometimes children and parents need help some help. And it is there.

• 1/2 cup (120 ml) fresh, cool water • 1/2 teaspoon probiotic powder • 1 teaspoon, or more, apple cider vinegar Preheat your oven on the lowest setting and then turn your oven light on. Once your oven reaches the desired temperature, turn it off, but keep the light on. Then, blend all the ingredients until completely smooth. If you need to add more water, do so 1 tablespoon (15 ml) at a time without making it too watery. It should have the texture of dairy sour cream. Once your desired consistency is reached, transfer the contents to a small mason jar or other glass jar with a lid. Screw the lid on and place it in the oven to rest overnight, about 8 hours; this will help the good bacteria grow. In the morning, remove it from the oven and transfer to the refrigerator until ready for use. Alternatively, you can use a 7-in-l Instant Pot with the yogurt setting to make this. After blending the ingredients, transfer the mixture to a glass jar. Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of water into the bottom of your Instant Pot and then set the stainless “basket” insert into the bottom. Place your glass jar on top of the grate and close the lid. Press the “yogurt” button and select how many hours you’d like it to culture, 6—8 being preferable. After the time has passed, remove the jar, secure a lid on top and place it in the refrigerator until ready to use.
