I
n the "New" College Edition of the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language one of the definitions of "entertain" is 'to extend hospitality towards'. That's probably the definition most of us turn to when we think of entertaining. "I really should entertain this weekend;" "I haven't entertained in ages;" "She entertained so beautifully when we were over." In our minds entertaining means inviting company – be they family, friends or strangers – preparing some kind of repast and playing hostess. Somewhere along the way the word 'entertaining' and its connotations became a little overwhelming, even intimidating. It wasn't just extending hospitality, it was creating and executing a perfect event. When I was younger, my children in school and the neighborhood growing, entertaining was a necessary part of home-owning. You moved into a new house, met neighbors and new friends and you worked at cultivating relationships – both for yourself and your children. You joined the shul sisterhood, the school PTA and, if possible, other local organizations. And you entertained. I remember spending significant amounts of time trying

to come up with a winning combination of guests to invite at any given meal. You wanted people who would get along, have shared interests and kids the same age but also bring new energy to the table with a family the other guests didn't already know. It was challenging and fun to come up with the right grouping. You picked a date several weeks in advance to "book" them early. If one family for whatever reason was not available you had to quickly reconnoiter and come up with a substitute formula. Often stressful. And then the menu. I was not a foodie but I did want my company to enjoy a good meal. I perused cookbooks, exchanged recipes with sisters and friends, always looking for something new to serve that would be a hit without making me a prisoner in the kitchen. Those were the days of the deli roll and Harvey Wallbanger cake. Pepperidge Farm sheets offered all kinds of options for appetizers and meat salads were suddenly the rage. And, of course, The Kosher Palette was the cookbook to own. We hosted and were hosted by many, many families in those years and the strategy worked. We developed many wonderful friendships during that time period. While most

of those friendships still hold strong today the enthusiasm for entertaining in that same elaborate and much-thoughtout way does not. Life is busy and full. There is less time and need to "work" on establishing new relationships. We treasure the ones we have and try to keep them going. Our children are grown and mostly out of the house now, building their own new community foundations. The other kind of entertaining we used to orchestrate so masterfully in those days was the family get-together. From Rosh Hashana at the beginning of the new year through Shavuos towards the end of it, and every holiday and occasion in between including, in my family, Thanksgiving, Mother's Day and Father's Day, we got together and celebrated. We took turns hosting big, elaborate meals. We set
regal tables, cooked gourmet dishes and cherished the special time our families had together. Unfortunately, even that kind of entertaining has dwindled over the years. The main reason for this is because, B"H our individual families have grown and most of us simply don't have the room to seat and serve the entire extended clan. And trying to coordinate the dozens of schedules involved is an overwhelming and often impossible task. But there is another reason, if I'm being truthful. We are all older and busier, less motivated, more exhausted. While there was a time when we used to race to call dibs on a certain holiday or occasion we wanted to host, these days, the targeted date

As I write this, though, I am happy to reveal that there is yet another way to entertain or extend hospitality. Less competitive and stressful, no big set up or clean up, without guest list jitters or presentation palpitations. It's cooking, shopping for or treating someone to a meal. While I have spent many years participating in a food chain and chesed group cooking for those who weren't able to – either because of a happy occasion such as having a new baby or a sad one such as

The Pina Chama was founded May 2001 in memory of Dr. Shmuel Gillis and Tzachi Sasson (HY”D) who were callously gunned down by terrorists on their way home to their families. Shmuel and Tzachi were both ofcers in the IDF. Shmuel was a doctor in a special unit and Tzachi served as an ofcer with soldiers who did their reserve duty in the Gush Etzion area. They both looked after the welfare of their soldiers on a personal level. The Pina Chama (a cozy corner) was started by Shmuel and Tzachi’s widows. It is maintained and operated by volunteers from Efrat and the Gush Etzion area. It operates from 7 AM to 9 PM every day except Shabbat. On an average day over 200 soldiers, security forces and police of every rank and unit stop off at the Pina Chama for a cup of hot coffee, a freshly baked piece of chocolate cake, and a smile. On a hot summer day they are served a cold refreshing drink and in the winter, a hot cup of soup. The supplies needed to maintain the Pina Chama are made possible through generous donations from Israel and around the world. The Pina Chama is located at the Gush Etzion Junction. The Gush Etzion junction sadly has been featured in the news in recent months as it has been the center of many terrorist attacks perpetrated against innocent victims. The Pina Chama has been welcoming the inux of security forces needed in the area due to the current situation.
“Pina Chama Purim cards” are available for you to send out to friends and family. Every dollar donated goes directly to benet the Pina Chama and our chayalim. If you are interested in helping this worthy cause please contact Teena Samter at 516-532-6468 or savteena@gmail.com or Miriam Amitzur at miriamahauser@gmail.com 516-214-0537 (US # in Israel)

Continued from page 48 I once hosted people from Holland who came on very short notice and stayed in our home for several days. In a way, it was easier because they had low expectations. They were so appreciative even though I did not do much. Had I been give a lot of advance notice, I probably would have worked very hard in terms of food prep and trying to make them comfortable. This was a better alternative. D.R. I prefer the unexpected. Much less stress and more fun in most situations. E.L. I used to spend so much time and effort entertaining. Thinking of the perfect combination of people, inviting way in advance, choosing a menu, and, of course, cooking, setting the table and cleaning up afterwards. I rarely do that kind of entertaining these days. I might ask a sister or friend on Thursday afternoon – sometimes even Friday – if they want to join us for a casual lunch. I might even tell my husband to bring someone back from shul. I say casual to take the pressure off myself but I am usually able to whip up a very respectable meal but without the weeks of advance preparation and concern. M.M. With aplomb. Always food available and I'm very entertaining. Just ask my kids. E.W. Usually it's for Shabbos so I just put up a large chulent!
D.H.
This is why I always have some easy-to-freeze appetizers, side dishes and desserts in my freezer. Makes feeding unexpected guests a breeze! T.B. I love entertaining and spontaneous company. My apartment was often the hang out for our friends on Shabbos afternoons. They'd naturally gravitate to our place. One afternoon, though, when I was on bed rest, my husband brought home a couple for an impromptu meal. I was really unprepared, not in the mood and upset. In the end it really was fine but I did not present my best self. O.J. All the time . . .always have plenty of food . . . and when it comes to guests sleeping over it sometimes feels like I run a hotel… S.W.

"To know a community is to eat its food." – This folk saying rings particularly true for the Jewish community where kosher cooking has long connected Jewish families to their heritage and to each other. In the wonderful cookbook Gatherings, Creative Kosher Cooking From Our Families to Yours, a project by the parents of Nativot Ha Torah Day School, scores of recipes represent some of the finest expressions of kosher cooking as developed by some of the best kosher cooks around. Continued from page 16 sitting shiva – this week I was actually the recipient of said hospitality and kindness. I am finally admitting it. I had to have hip replacement surgery. I still have a hard time believing that I both needed it and went through with it. My mother had it several years ago but she was nearly thirty years my senior! But I did. These days it is a relatively routine procedure but nonetheless it is still surgery with all its risks and challenges. I put it off for a very long time but finally had no choice. Although I wasn't very talkative about it and it took place during winter break here in the Five Towns where 90% (it seems), of the inhabitants clear out for a good week to ten days, I was the recipient of such generous and heart-warming hospitality that I am truly in awe. The visits – despite the hectic schedules catching planes – the cards, flowers, gifts, grocery shopping offers, impromptu lunches, dinners, and elaborate, plentiful Shabbos meals were both unexpected and overwhelming. The concern and generosity I experienced was moving and I am truly grateful to my wonderful family, amazing friends and thoughtful neighbors and acquaintances. I may not be hosting many formal social Shabbos meals anymore, and my family may not get together as often on every holiday or special occasion, but entertaining – extending hospitality towards others – is certainly something I can continue to practice and enjoy.
