Welcome to Wrexham Lager
In a groundbreaking new partnership, James Wright, CEO of Wrexham Lager, announced that Hollywood stars, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, have joined as co-owners of Wrexham Lager Beer Co., alongside the Roberts family. The acquisition was completed through Red Dragon Ventures, a joint venture established by The R.R. McReynolds Company, majority owners of Wrexham AFC, and the Allyn family of Skaneateles, New York.
“As Co-chairmen of Wrexham AFC we have learned a lot,” said Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, “The connection between club and community, the intricacies of the offside rule and the occasional need for beer – especially after finance meetings. Wrexham Lager has a 140-year-old recipe and a storied history and we’re excited to help write its next chapter.”

Inspiring Book Signing at Bellis Brothers
Local author, Samantha Maxwell, celebrated for her inspiring books, ‘CP Isn’t Me’ and ‘Disabling Ableism’, held a successful book promotion and signing event last month, at Bellis Brothers Farm Shop in Holt. The event was attended by MP Andrew Ranger and MS Lesley Griffiths, whose support Maxwell described as invaluable.
“I would really like to thank both Lesley Griffiths and Andrew Ranger for their continued support,” Samantha shared. “And, of course, a big thank you to Bellis Brothers Farm Shop and Garden Centre for hosting the event and stocking both books. I truly appreciate their ongoing encouragement.”

Serving Families in Need

Since its inception in spring 2021, Baby Basics Wrexham has emerged as a beacon of hope for new mothers facing financial hardships. Founded by a local mum in response to the increasing need for practical support, this volunteer-led initiative provides essential items for newborns and mothers who are struggling to afford the basics.
Each year, Baby Basics Wrexham distributes hundreds of essential itemsfrom baby clothes to toiletries, to women in diverse and challenging circumstances. These items are generously donated by the local community and meticulously sorted by a dedicated team of volunteers. With over 200 hampers created since opening, every gift is packaged with care and love, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to valuing each mother and child.
Assistance on hand
Baby Basics Wrexham works closely with midwives and health visitors, ensuring that those who need assistance can easily access it. The organisation specifically supports vulnerable groups, including teenage mothers, asylum seekers, and women escaping domestic abuse and trafficking. This vital service is crucial in alleviating the financial burden that comes with caring for a new baby, allowing families to focus on what truly matters: bonding and nurturing their little ones.
In summer 2024, Baby Basics Wrexham moved to the
Caia Park Partnership, enhancing its ability to serve families across Wrexham. As part of a growing network of Baby Basics centres nationwide, the Wrexham branch continues to inspire community involvement and compassion.
The organisation is always eager for community support, welcoming donations of gently-used clothing and new toiletries during opening hours on Mondays from 9:30am to 11:30am. Handmade items from individuals and craft groups are especially cherished, adding a personal touch to the hampers.

Wow, the busy month of December is upon us now and Wrexham’s hospitality businesses are gearing up for one of their busiest periods of the year!
As always, there’s a lot going on in the County this month, some of which I’ve highlighted below.
Our popular Victorian Christmas Market returns for four days from 28th November to 1st December, coinciding with the relaunch of the renovated Butchers and General Markets in town. In addition to this, Fair Events are running the Wrexham Christmas Market on 6th-8th and 13th-15th December at Bellevue Park, with an array of gift stalls and food and drink available.
A few weeks ago, as I’ve previously mentioned, Wrexham Lager teamed up with several local hospitality businesses to create the Wrexham Taster Half-Day Tour which is now available for online bookings (making a great gift!) at; www.pure.wales/tour/the-wrexhamtaster-half-day-tour
If you’re heading out for a walk between Christmas and New Year - why not take the scenic loop between Ty Mawr Country Park and Trevor Basin (Pontcysyllte Aqueduct), via the historic village of Cefn Mawr? The aqueduct will close for important annual renovation works again between January and March,
so it’ll be your final chance to cross it this winter. Alternatively, get away from it all with a walk in the stunning Ceiriog Valley, with a pit-stop in Llanarmon at the award winning Hand at Llanarmon for a drink by the open fire.
Finally, as we head into 2025, we celebrate the National “Year of Croeso” and we’re starting this by launching a new food and drink competition of hospitality businesses around the County from 13th January. Themed “Wales meets North America”, the challenge asks chefs and bartenders to create a dish/drink to celebrate our transatlantic links throughout January into early Feb. In addition, we are also working on bringing back our annual Tourism And Hospitality Awards to celebrate those individuals who’ve helped our industry grow significantly in the last year - many of who don’t always get the recognition they deserve.

Gardening Tips and Advice December - Winter Frost
As we approach the shortest day of the year in December, you will need to work to keep you warm outside, such as digging and tree pruning. Check your winter protection and if you have a greenhouse make sure the heater is working. Hopefully there are not too many jobs left to do this year so you will have time for some fireside garden planning.
TOP 10 JOBS TO DO IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH
1. Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place.
2. Check that greenhouse heaters are working.
3. Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing.
4. Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls).

6. Keep mice away from stored produce.
7. Reduce watering of houseplants.
8. Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding.

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon
Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon is a classic British dish, and makes for an extra-special treat as a Christmas Day breakfast.
INGREDIENTS
4 eggs
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
2 English muffins, halved
A little butter, for spreading
8 slices smoked salmon
Chopped chives, to serve
METHOD
HOLLANDAISE SAUCE
2 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp white wine vinegar
3 egg yolks
125g unsalted butter, diced
First make the hollandaise sauce. Put the lemon juice and vinegar in a small bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk with a balloon whisk until light and frothy. Place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and whisk until mixture thickens. Gradually add the butter, whisking constantly until thick – if it looks like it might be splitting, then whisk off the heat for a few minutes. Season and keep warm.
To poach the eggs, bring a large pan of water to the boil and add the vinegar. Lower the heat so that the water is simmering gently. Stir the water so you have a slight whirlpool, then slide in the eggs one by one. Cook each for about 4 minutes, then remove with a slotted spoon.
Lightly toast and butter the muffins, then put a couple of slices of salmon on each half. Top each with an egg, spoon over some hollandaise and garnish with chopped chives.
Seasonal Treats in December
In December, the culinary scene shifts to embrace the essence of winter. While fresh produce can be somewhat limited, there are still plenty of delightful options to savour during this holiday-packed month.
Root vegetables
Root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, turnips, and rutabagas are in season. Their natural sweetness and earthy flavours make them ideal for hearty stews, roasted dishes, and comforting soups.
Brussels sprouts
These little green veggies are at their peak in December. These small gems are best when roasted with a touch of olive oil, a sprinkle of salt, and maybe a drizzle of balsamic glaze.
Citrus fruits
Oranges, grapefruits, clementines, and lemons add zesty and refreshing notes to winter meals. They're perfect for citrus salads, freshly squeezed juices, or even a citrus-infused marinade for roasted meats.
Winter greens
Kale, chard, and spinach thrive in the cold weather, making them excellent choices for salads, stir-fries, and sautés. These leafy greens provide essential vitamins and a burst of green in your winter diet.
Pomegranates
These have ruby-red seeds that are sweet and tart. Perfect for adding a pop of flavour to your salads, cocktails, and desserts.
Nuts
Nuts play a significant role in many festive recipes. Walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts are readily available, perfect for adding crunch and depth of flavour to biscuits, cakes, and stuffing. Great for snacking too.

Wild herbs: Some hardy wild herbs can still be foraged, such as rosemary and thyme.
Seaweed: Along the UK's coastal regions, certain types of edible seaweed, like Dulse and Sea Lettuce, can be foraged yearround. They add a unique flavour to dishes and are often used in soups and salads.

In a medical emergency such as choking, blacking out, chest pain and serious blood loss call 999 or attend A&E.
Planning ahead
It’s important to make sure you have all the medicines you may require ahead of bank holiday closures. Make sure to order your repeat prescription in enough time. Please remember you can request your medication by using the NHS Wales app. For any information about medication or prescriptions during any out of hours period visit your local pharmacy. If you run out of medicine outside of normal surgery opening hours and need some urgently, you may be able to obtain an emergency supply from a pharmacist without a prescription.
A properly stocked medicine cabinet can help you to treat many common illnesses and ailments over the festive period.
The following items can be helpful:
• A first-aid kit, including bandages, plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic and eyewash solution.
• Pain relief such as aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen.
• Oral rehydration salts.
• Anti-diarrhoea tablets to relieve symptoms of diarrhoea, these will not help with the underlying cause.
• Antihistamines to help with allergies.
• Indigestion relief remedies.

Wales Net Zero 2035

A group of experts commissioned by the Welsh Government recently reported on how Wales could reach net zero by 2035.
Why 2035?
The UK and many other countries currently have a target date of 2050 for achieving net zero. However, 2050 is neither the fastest we could possibly get there or when we should ideally get there; there’s overwhelming evidence that the sooner we reduce global emissions, the less severe the consequences of climate change will be.
Recent flooding in Spain provided an incredibly graphic illustration of the impacts already being experienced. As the frequency and severity of climate-related disasters increases, so do the human and financial costs.
There’s widespread consensus that delaying action will prove far more costly than moving faster and that if we can reduce emissions more quickly we should.
Net Zero 2035 reports
The group published the outcomes of their work in September. You can learn more about the people involved and read their reports on this website: www.netzero2035.wales.
An overarching summary is accompanied by more detailed reports focusing in on specific questions:
• What could education, jobs and work look like across Wales by 2035?
• How could Wales feed itself by 2035?

• How could people and places be connected by 2035?
Why this work really matters
A frequent criticism of the net zero pledges made by many countries, including the UK, is a lack of detail on how these aspirations could actually be delivered. The Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group’s work is really significant as it actually sets out how we could get there by 2035.
Not every claim we might see or hear about the potential impact of reaching net zero is well-founded. I’d therefore recommend taking a look at the Net Zero 2035 team’s work, as I think it provides as comprehensive, well-informed and objective an assessment as you’re likely to get. It’s not the one and only way we could possibly get there, but it offers a very good starting point for sensible conversations about where we go from here.

What is imposter syndrome?
Imposter syndrome is the feeling of selfdoubt or fear of being ‘exposed’ as a fraud, despite evidence of success or capability. For business owners, it can mean feeling underqualified or undeserving, even when your business is thriving. You might feel your achievements are due to luck or timing rather than your skill and hard work.
Starting and running a business involves taking risks, navigating a steep learning curve, and balancing multiple roles, from marketing and sales to finance and customer service. Business owners often wear many hats, which can quickly become overwhelming and leave you questioning whether you’re doing ‘enough’ in each area.
This constant juggling of tasks, coupled with the pressure to succeed, can amplify self-doubt and lead to feelings of inadequacy, especially when things don’t go as planned or when challenges arise.
How to manage the feelings
The good news is that imposter syndrome can be managed. Start by recognising these feelings - it helps to remember that imposter syndrome is common, even among successful entrepreneurs. Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, with more than 2,000 people diagnosed every year in Wales. However, if it is detected in its early stages, the cancer is treatable and curable, with almost nine out of ten people surviving.
Since October, 50-year-olds registered with a GP in Wales will automatically be invited to receive a free NHS bowel screening test kit every two years. It’s part of a phased approach to lower the screening age, in line with recommendations from the UK National Screening Committee. Reducing the minimum age for the programme down to 50 means more people will qualify for the screening tests and, therefore, it is hoped more lives will be saved. The self-screening kits will arrive in the post so people can complete the test in the comfort of their own home.
In the early stages of bowel cancer, people may feel well and have no symptoms so I urge everyone in Wrexham who receives the invitation to take up the offer as it could save your life.
Coinciding with this positive development, I recently met with members of Bowel Cancer Support North Wales, a self-help group that provides support and advice to people affected by bowel cancer, their families and carers. The group meets on the first Thursday of every month in the Wynnstay Arms Hotel in Wrexham city centre between 7pm – 9pm. Anyone in the Wrexham area affected by bowel cancer is welcome to attend and all the information can be found on their website: www.bowelcancersupport.co.uk.
For 85 years, Citizens Advice has been offering practical, independent advice and support to those in need.
To mark the milestone, Wrexham Citizens Advice recently held a special celebratory event and it was a pleasure to pop along.
The team provide such a valuable service to the local population and I am sure they will continue to play a crucial role in the community for many more years to come.
Andrew Ranger MP and I recently visited the team at Wrexham Lager.
These are exciting times for the iconic brewery, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney recently being confirmed as co-owners.
The future is extremely bright and having worked closely with Wrexham Lager for a number of years, I will continue to do all I can to support them.

Could your cancer symptoms have been picked up earlier?
How many medical intervention decisions are based on statistics rather than on the evidence presented by patients who know their own bodies? Those whose lives have been cut short because of an initial misdiagnosis would say ‘too many’.
So why are there so many missed opportunities for early intervention, and what can victims do to get justice?
Too often we hear of patients struggling to get a GP appointment and when they get one it is only a telephone appointment. They may then be ‘fobbed off’ with a simple diagnosis and suggested simple remedy. Several months later they get a face-to-face appointment and further investigation –which sadly may come too late.
One of the main reasons for this is that decisions for further investigation are all too often based on statistics.
If, for example, a 23-year-old woman presents with serious abdominal pain and bloating, she will often be diagnosed with IBS – purely because her age puts her outside the
statistical group identified as ‘typical’ for her symptoms being due to a more serious condition such as cancer.
If this happens, what should she do? If the diagnosis turns out to be cancer, and especially if it is life threatening, the patient or her family members should seek advice from a medical negligence lawyer as soon as possible.
If it can be proved that the cancer was misdiagnosed, or diagnosed too late despite consultation being sought early, the patient could claim cancer misdiagnosis compensation and maybe even get specialist treatment not available on the NHS.
Most medical negligence lawyers offer clients a Free Claims Assessment. If they think you have a viable case, they will support you every step of the way if you choose to make a claim.
Even if it is the case that a family member or loved one has died because of a late cancer diagnosis due to medical negligence, you may still be able to claim compensation. When assessing the viability of a claim, your Medical Negligence Solicitor will need to consider your medical records, past medical history, the symptoms you were displaying and how many times you visited your doctor. Seeking advice from a reputable specialist lawyer is key to the success of a claim.
