‘YOU CAN CUT ALL THE FLOWERS BUT YOU CAN’T KEEP SPRING AWAY’ wrote the Novel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. Regrettably, many of the usual rites of spring have been cut from the calendar – Sevilla’s Feria de Abril, romerias in the Andalusian countryside, even Easter’s solemn rituals, por díos – but we can still take inspiration from the season of rebirth. Or as witty Wisconsin journalist Doug Larson also wrote, ‘Spring makes you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush’. Belinda Beckett whistles up some of her favourite things about April in Andalucía.
