OCTOBER We may not be clinking steins at an Oktoberfest this autumn but there are other compelling reasons to toast the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness this month before we go into hibernation from winter flu, writes Belinda Beckett

FALL FOLIAGE

The Costas are more commonly associated with evergreen palms, olive trees and agave cacti but you only have to venture a few kilometres inland for a fix of deciduous autumn leaf colours in 50 shades of flame. Over 30 per cent of Andalucía is covered with protected forests and natural parkland (Cazorla, in Jaén province, is Spain’s

largest) and Mother Nature puts on quite a show. The chestnut woods of the Serrania de Ronda are at their most spectacular in October, burnished to a gold and copper sheen and laden with hedgehog-shaped husks whose sweet nuts are roasted over braziers on every Spanish street corner at this time of year. The quaint villages

engaged in the harvest are strung out along a loop route between San Pedro and Ronda an easy drive from Marbella. Better still, exchange four wheels for two – it’s perfect weather to get on your bike and hit the hiking trails. Don’t forget to catch a falling leaf in October for luck throughout the year. It’s not as easy as you think…

STAG PARTIES

back to CONTENTS

If you go down to the woods tonight you’ll never believe your ears. The month of October is a once-a-year opportunity to experience a berrea – literally, a ‘bellowing’ – the vocal component of the annual stag rut. This awesome autumn ritual goes on after sundown, mostly unseen by humans but definitely heard, when the hills are alive with the guttural roars of horny bucks serenading the local does. Rural villages have cottoned on to the tourist appeal

of listening to their love calls by moonlight and organise excursions and picnics around these nocturnal concerts. Los Alcornocales Natural Park just down the road in Cádiz province is one of the four best spots in the region to tick a berrea off your bucket list. However deer are flighty creatures. If you’re hoping to capture National Geographic Magazine quality images of Mr Stag courting Bambi’s mother you’ll need to camp out for a week with a lens of Hubble telescope capacity.

MAGIC MUSHROOMS

Every year, after the first rains of autumn, wild mushrooms sprout from Andalucía’s forest floors and add a delicious seasonal twist to rustic restaurant menus. Think nutty brown boletus, trumpetshaped chanterelles and crunchy saffron milk caps, drizzled with garlic butter, simmered in venison stews or, in the inventive kitchen of Al-Andalus in my village of Los Barrios, whipped up with sugar and eggs into sweet mushroom flan! But if the thought of all that free fungi entices you to revisit your hunter-gatherer roots and rush off to the woods with your trug, don’t go alone! There are over 2,000 varieties in Spain, including the hallucinogenic type, and you’ll need a master’s degree in mycology to tell the edible ones from their toxic lookalikes. ‘Mushrooms are like women – for every good one you find six bad ones’ is a local Spanish saying that must have been coined by a particularly misogynist mycologist. Fortunately most rural tourist offices offer their own

24 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

guided foraging forays and fungi festivals although some may be cancelled this year. To inspire you, check out the Andalucía Junta’s guide to edible mushrooms which lists 50 different varieties, including the rare and highly prized black truffle, found in the forests of Jaén and Granada – although for these underground treats you’ll require the services of a well-trained pig! Download the guide from our digital edition.

FUNKY FRUIT

Spain’s harvest season starts in September when grapes hog the limelight but a whole crop of alternative fruits are turning up at farmers’ markets right now. The squashy spheres that resemble orange tomatoes are persimmons or ‘caquis’ in Spanish, which currently outsell kiwis and mangos in the UK. Huelva and Valencia between them are the world’s number one exporters of this sweet, slippery-textured fruit that can be scooped out of its skin with a spoon, like eating a soft-boiled egg. The fruit that gives tequila its sunrise and

Campari its ruby colour is also ripening on Andalucia’s trees at this time of year. The ‘granada’ or pomegranate has been the heraldic emblem of the eponymous city of Granada since the Reconquest. An anti-oxidising power food, it takes patience to pick out their jelly-covered seeds individually but if you’ve seen the way the Spanish eat pipas, you’ll know they’re well up to the task. Fuzzy, lemon-shaped quinces are also in season. Although inedible when raw, they lend fruity support to jams and chutneys and are the star ingredient in membrillo, the essential accompaniment to any Spanish cheeseboard.

CHURROS & CHOCOLATE

back to CONTENTS

Like croissants in France or bagels in New York, nothing says breakfast in Spain more scrumptiously than churros. The Spanish enjoy these sinful deep-fried doughnuts yearround, dusted in sugar or dunked into gooey hot chocolate, but a crisp autumn morning is the very best time of year to appreciate this calorific treat. Although served in most cafes these days, it’s more fun to join the queue at a traditional kiosko where you can inhale this aromatic alchemy as artisan churreros turn a tap to release long sausage tubes of sweet dough into a cauldron of bubbling fat. In Andalucía, your churros may come in one giant squishy rueda (wheel) for sharing or crispy sticks for dipping. Open from the crack of dawn (unusual for Spain), if you want to see a true cross section of society, spend a few hours in a churrería. You’ll find a cosmopolitan crowd of construction workers, sharp-suited business executives, early-bird jubilados and teenage night owls in glittery tops, rounding off a night on the town. e

was raised next to my grandfather’s private airstrip in New York, near the Canadian border. He restored antique aeroplanes, generally restricted to the Piper Cub and Super Cub models, with variants in between. I spent my youth riding in his planes, eventually taking my first solo flight in the 1990s in the aeroplane I now own, a 1949 Piper Cub Special. The latter is a postwar model that sits between the iconic Cub (which trained most American pilots for WWII) and the Super Cub (which became the de facto bush plane of Alaska). My aircraft model,

rare in that slightly over 1,300 were produced, can do both basic bush plane landings and ‘low and slow’ flying, for which Cubs are treasured. The aeroplane eventually made its way from New York down to North Carolina, out to Colorado, back to the Atlantic Coast, out to Wyoming, then off to Germany and then Spain. Other than the Atlantic crossing in a shipping container, it flew to all its new homes at painstakingly slow cruise speeds of 120 km/h, with one fuel tank, requiring stops roughly every 320 km for refuelling. While crossing America as PA11 in Cerdanya

Texture has always been a secondary effect of other pursuits. It is further ironic that living in the Pyrenees itself was a situation derived from another goal that went sideways, where Spain materialised as an unexpected solution. I suppose a bit of background is in order to set the stage that resulted in the current story. WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY GARRETT FISHER

part of many transitions, I developed a knack for aerial photography. It was unknown to me at the time that few aeroplanes are well suited for the task, as airframe parts are often in the way, requiring co-pilots, special door installations, harnesses, and much coordination to line up photographs. In the Cub, it is possible to fly the aeroplane while sticking the camera out the window, taking 18mm wide-angle photographs at the same time. Amid a growing interest in this skill set, I discovered in 2012 that an entirely different genre exists from the air: that of isolating the horizon and zooming in on unique textures and patterns below. It is a hybrid of my standard style, which is to shoot impactful landscape scenes which include the horizon, and drone photography, which often points downwards sharply, though tends to include a reasonably wide-angle. ‘Textured’ images are neither, in that the focus may be as small as a village, large farm field, or beach. I discovered this

American Texture – North of Bear Lake, Idaho

phenomenon while in an otherwise unappealing area of the foothills of western North Carolina on a grey winter afternoon. That discovery was profound enough that I began searching for agricultural texture when I could find it, gathering interesting images here and there as I crossed America. Later, in Wyoming, I would fly a large portion of the Rocky Mountains, gathering not just agricultural regalia but also naturally occurring texture forms. After my move to Europe, I wrote two books filled with photographs of this genre. As one would expect, I kept an eye out for texture in Europe and was greeted with a firehose of it. Germany, in its

insistence upon Teutonic order, had a dazzling array of perfectly ordered farmland, devoid of the slightest inefficiency such as weeds. As life wandered not too long thereafter to Spain, I kept looking for agricultural texture, collecting it as I went, until that fateful day that I arrived in my new home of La Cerdanya, a profoundly attractive high-altitude valley in the Catalan Pyrenees, at the convergence of Andorra, France, and Spain.

Village of Montella in La Cerdanya • Rock layers beneath Posets, Central Spanish Pyrenees

When describing what it was like to move to that section of the Pyrenees to other pilots, I find it easiest to convey the variety of the area by noting its climate zones. To the east is the driest section of continental France, with a region that features the famous Tramontane wind. To the southeast, one finds humid and wet Mediterranean weather, with abundant forests. A one-hour flight to the southwest presents the Zaragoza desert, with the Central Catalonian Depression in between, itself a strangely productive, foggy, semi-arid region. To the west, alpine terrain over the Pyrenees stretches for 130 miles. Directly north, over the spine of the mountains, continental French climate abuts the

Pyrenees, resulting in distinct vegetation, a product of greater rainfall. In the middle lies the temperate semi-arid valley of La Cerdanya, with four distinct seasons, laden with deep and profound textures. Visitors would later proclaim that I might as well 'cut and paste' what they were seeing to an image of Wyoming, places that they had previously visited. Another thought it looked just like the mountains of Utah. As a former resident of New York, Wyoming, Colorado, and North Carolina, I could find scenery that looked like all four places within a 20-minute flight; I just needed to pick the direction and the world would change quickly.

Poppies – La Cerdanya, Spain

Agriculture is a deep part of life in La Cerdanya, with traditions that span a long and rich history of empires and cultures that had dominion over the region. While trans-humanism is practised in the Pyrenees (moving cows up and down to the mountains, like the Swiss), agriculture is largely reduced to the valley floors and nearby terraced farm fields. Outside of these habitable regions, the terrain gets rocky and more challenging, which means that nature is permitted to exert her raw influence. It did not take long for me to realise that I had inadvertently moved to an epicentre of natural texture, of which requires a more detailed explanation of the two 34 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

forms of 'texture' one can find in the Spanish Pyrenees. With dry skies and an illustrious sunlight, I found myself taking scenic images on the ground and in the air, and friends would note the incredible 'texture', which had much to do with lighting, vegetation, and surreal Spanish scenery. That sat alongside what I have previously mentioned, which is the technique of isolating a subject, removing horizon and scale. Both subject styles existed in superlative intensity and quantity at the same time.

American Agricultural Texture

D THE SPOTLIGHT travel

While powerful scenic images are motivating, I find a curious attraction to the mystique of narrowly focused texture subjects. Realism photography is in such abundance these days and the genre has become so obvious that little artistic intrigue remains. To isolate scale furnishes a detailed, data-rich image which simultaneously remains somewhat elusive, inviting the viewer into the process to attempt to decode the subject and meaning of the photograph. It is especially magnified in above timberline locations, as data within the image defies the provision of an anchor which would make sense of relative proportion. An image of the gnarled remains of an avalanche, the surface of a remaining Pyrenean glacier, exposed thrusts of layered rock, or variegated alpine tundra often have nothing in the scene to identify how big anything in the image is. Sure, a mountain scene must be grand, though is that rock the size of a dog, a person, a car, or a house? It is virtually impossible to divorce the majesty of the Pyrenees from the equally majestic experience of flying above them in a gentle, simple,

36 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

antique aeroplane. While I often flew on pleasant, sunny days, there is a reality of Pyrenees weather that I came to understand after my arrival: it is a renowned factory of mountain waves and rotors, which are profound currents of vertically moving air as well as tubes of sometimes violent rotation, respectively. While I had made a near art out of flying the highest terrain that I could find in the Rockies in this same aeroplane, I was forced to become an even greater expert in the severity of mountain weather that I found, learning to literally surf the waves at 10,000 feet or higher.

Summer hail above timberline – Andorra

I bring this up as this world of high-altitude air is not something that solely affects pilots. The existence of abovetimberline terrain is loaded with a complexity and richness that is somewhat mystifying as to how virtually the entire world below passes by, unaware of what is happening high up in this terrain. When the wind slackens and I gently fly by with my camera out of the window, a whole world unfurls beneath in the snows of winter storms. Snow drifts are incredibly rich from above and up close, with wide variety on a stormby-storm basis. Sometimes the wind is so strong that it shears the snow off the ridges; other times it forms brilliant rime ice or snow drifts that point upward on steep terrain. Avalanches

are an incredible sign of nature’s might, usually far from civilisation. Dust from Saharan storms leaves orange-red patterns, as though the snow of the Pyrenees is trying to imitate the dunes of North Africa. As alpine lakes freeze and melt and annual snowfall initially presents itself and melts away the following summer, waves of textured beauty come and go, a world unto itself that seems to change with the passing day. The sum of these efforts made it into my third texture work, something I did not expect until it was nearly complete. Up until that point, I could only hope to collect enough texture images to comprise an entire book by covering large expanses of earth, incidentally collecting a scene here and there. The Pyrenees was the first time that I discovered more than enough in a small area, of which I believe it surpassed what I found in America.

Those who were in Marbella for the summer season were able to enjoy many days of fun and splendour, with a host of outdoor events taking place – including the recent concert by talented duo Rosco and Andrea Guasch – better known as Hotel Flamingo. The event marked the new frontline Estepona Hotel & Spa Resort as a venue to watch out for, not only by those desiring a seaside vacation but also local residents in the mood for great outdoor entertainment. The Resort opened in July this year – a challenging yet still active time for the tourism sector, which saw a plethora of tourists from the centre and north of Spain head to the Coast for a sunny escape.

TYPES OF ACCOMMODATION

The Resort is home to 207 spacious rooms and apartments, which look out to lush gardens or to the Sierra Bermeja mountain range. All have free WiFi, an LED television, minibar, air conditioning, and pillow menu. LEGENDARY DESIGNERS

OF CLASSIC GOLF COURSES

When thinking of golf, we usually celebrate the stars that have risen to the top of the game and become legends of the sport, but almost as magical are the creative geniuses who design the hallowed courses where dreams are made and broken.

f you think the design and laying out of a golf course is a straightforward matter, think again, for it involves far more than simply covering a section of land with grass and creating an 18hole parcours. To be a successful golf course designer requires not only an intimate knowledge of the game, but also an understanding of the dynamics that make golf exciting and challenging, a flair for design and knowledge of the technical side of the field – which involves the flow and drainage of the land, wind and climatic conditions, different types of grass, trees and other planted species, as well as how and where to add bunkers and water features. When all the above are brought together

and you also take into account construction and maintenance budgets, it adds up to quite a matrix of elements that a course designer has to bear in mind. For this reason, it is a highly specialised field in which only a few manage to distinguish themselves and become legendary in their own right— and its perhaps not surprising that the majority of top golf course creators are either ex-professional players or trained agronomists and architects. It is from within these ranks that the very best have created halcyon park landscapes in Spain that are not only beautiful, soothing stretches of manmade nature, but also the stage for golfing greatness.

among their ranks, who has been just as prolific both here and abroad. Javier Arana is sometimes called the ‘unsung hero of Spanish golf’, having created iconic courses such as the Campo de Golf El Saler near Valencia and our own Club de Golf Aloha, Guadalmina Sur and Río Real Golf. At one with the Spanish scenery he worked in, his courses reflect this unity with their surroundings to become idealised

versions of the natural landscape. In so doing, he was perhaps best qualified of all to bring sport and paradise together under Spanish skies. Manuel Piñero, one of Spain’s finest and most successful golfers, is also famous for the three loops of nine holes he designed at La Quinta Golf & Country Club in Marbella, which offer players multi-combinations of challenging circuits to play. e

f course, purists will argue that no coupé should have four doors, but the original idea was to create coupé-like bodywork with svelte lines and a low-slung, predatory ambiance while providing rear seat room and easy access for at least two rear occupants. Mercedes-Benz was an early entrant with its CLS but others followed and the latest arrival on the scene is the BMW M8 Gran Coupé Competition, a car with roominess almost matching a saloon and with performance that places it among the very best touring cars you can buy at any price. There are also two-door and two-door Cabrio variants and additionally a slightly more docile

non-Competition four-door model. The Competition offers a roomy cabin as long as the rear seat passengers are not too tall. It’s too much to expect that the car should offer full adult seating in the back and if that’s a priority, BMW will happily sell you an M5 Competition that has almost the same mechanical specifications but offers a full saloon interior. From an emotional standpoint, the low-slung styling of the M8 has more appeal. The heart of this formidable Grand Tourer is its super-potent engine, said to be the most powerful BMW has ever installed in a production car. eight-speed automatic and it’s good to see standard all-wheel drive with so much power on tap. BMW engineered the suspension to combine on-road comfort and stability with true track

capability. Many of the refinements in the suspension system are highly advanced and were developed using test tracks in France and Germany. There’s nothing like a few laps of the Nurburgring to reveal any shortcomings the suspension may have. Get behind the wheel and there’s a wide array of controls available to tune various systems to a specific driver’s needs. This menu includes settings for the engine, suspension, steering,

braking and even the all-wheel drive system. A new owner will probably take a while to get used to this flexibility but it will pay dividends ultimately. The M8 GC Competition competes in a busy market of highly desirable products but it should more than hold its own. In many ways, the car is more advanced than

many of its rivals and of course, there’s always something very special about a performance car from the iconic Bavarian manufacturer. Most buyers will probably be more than happy with the tamer variants of this model series, but for those who want the best of the best, the Competition awaits.

ENNIO

MORRICONE

WORDS DARIO POLI

MAESTRO OF OUR TIMES

PALESTRINA TO MORRICONE – TWO ROMAN ICONS Ennio Morricone, (born November 10, 1928) was an Italian composer and conductor who died on the 6th July 2020 aged 91. On that day, the world lost the greatest, most original, versatile,

64 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

creative, composer and musician in a century, surpassing other talented musicians by leagues with his unique innovations. We’ll never see his like again and I am sad to feel his passing, but blessed to have been living while his genius was flowing out to all of us. Ennio Morricone is the musician of

our times, who with his heartfelt sensitiveness and distinct sound, inspired me emotionally and technically more than any other, (excluding the great classical composers of the past) from the first time I heard his arrangement of a simple love song Sapore di Sale, written and sung by Gino Paoli. I was smitten, by the depth and beauty of Morricone’s arrangement of this tender song and still am. I was sixteen and overwhelmed by the musical arrangement, I enquired who was the arranger, and with my limited pocket money, bought every song with the name E. Morricone attached. Even in my

youthful years, I sensed this name was exceptional; I felt a genius not yet discovered. I was often ridiculed by my peers for my open endorsement of this unheard-of Italian musician that the world hardly knew. I remained certain of his unique talents and years later, my instincts proved to be correct and I was vindicated, as he became a household name almost overnight for his inventive music for the new exciting spaghetti westerns that out of the blue, like a bullet from a Colt 45, hit the cinema audiences with his unusual film scores for Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns, A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few

Dollars More (1965), The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) and Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Beyond the western movies in the 80s, Morricone composed the scores for The Thing (1982), a John Carpenter horror movie, Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Roland Joffé’s highly acclaimed film The Mission (1986), followed by Brian De Palma’s The Untouchables (1987) and Giuseppe Tornatore’s Cinema Paradiso (1988), including his stunning scores for Oliver Stone’s U Turn (1997), Tornatore’s The Legend of 1900 (1998) and Malèna (2000). Some of the more recent films he scored include De Palma’s Mission

to Mars (2000) then Lajos Koltai’s Fateless (2005) and in (2009) Tornatore’s Baaria - La porta del Vento. He is considered one of the most prolific and influential film composers of his era, composing over 500 film scores, and being awarded almost every prestigious prize in music. However, he was also a classical composer, who created numerous compositions for the concert halls and was invited to conduct his music at the UN. Morricone has composed and arranged scores for countless film and TV productions. He is well-known for his longterm collaborations with international acclaimed directors such as Sergio Leone, Barry Levinson, Brian De Palma, and

66 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

Giuseppe Tornatore. He was born in Rome, the son of Mario Morricone, a jazz trumpeter and his wife Libera. He wrote his first compositions when he was six years old and was encouraged to develop this natural talent. Following in his father’s footsteps, he was inspired to take up the trumpet and first attended the National Academy of Santa Cecilia taking trumpet lessons at the age of nine and formally at the age of 12, he entered the conservatory in 1940. Playing the trumpet, he learned composition, and choral music under the talented Goffredo Petrassi, who deeply influenced him. These were during the difficult years of World War

II in heavily bombed Rome; the suffering of the people and his feelings of constant hunger, were part of his wartime experiences that influenced many of his scores for films set in that period and beyond. From those dark days and with total commitment to his music, his life and professional career blossomed. Morricone also worked for variety shows, documentaries, Television and TV series, including in (1971) the US TV Western The Virginian and Moses (1974), then Marco Polo (1982). One notable composition, Chi Mai was used in the films, Maddalena (1971) and Le Professionnel (1981) as well as the TV series The Life and Times of David Lloyd George (1981).

He wrote the score for the Mafia television series La Piovra, including the themes Drugs and Blood, La Morale and L’immorale and was the music supervisor for the television project La Bibbia (The Bible). In the late 1990s with his musician son Andrea, they collaborated in the Ultimo crime dramas. The duo received an Award-winning BAFTA for Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. Then in 2003, he scored another epic, for Japanese television, the Taiga drama about Miyamoto Musashi, Japan’s legendary warrior called Musashi. At 87 he became the oldest Oscar winner ever, receiving the Oscar for the music of The Hateful Eight (2016). This was the culmination of many awards, including an honorific Oscar in 2007, plus five other nominations, The Golden Lion, five BAFTA awards, three Golden Globes, a Grammy Award and The Recording Academy award for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966) My two favourite recordings of Ennio’s music remain his brilliant arrangements and recordings made with the French singing star Mireille Mathieu recorded in the 1970’s, and his haunting score for Bertolucci’s powerful drama Novecento (1900) a truly inspirational work. It’s said by cognoscenti that as a composer, Morricone conveyed

Bach and Stravinsky to the cinema; a truly high compliment indeed. Film composer Hans Zimmer said: ”Ennio was an icon and icons just don’t go away, icons are forever.” There is much more that can and will be written about this great composer, including his inherent modesty and total professionalism to his craft. To this day I remain his most fervent and devoted fan. I thank heaven that we were alive and fortunate to listen to and savour his divine music, being part of this composer’s unequalled, creative experience. e

ive million guys around the globe will be ‘Growing a Mo for Movember’ behind their coronavirus masks this year to ‘change the face of men’s health’. But few efforts will hold a tweezer to the spectacular specimen sported by Catalan artist Salvador Dali when he was alive… or indeed, dead. His macabre exhumation three years ago to provide DNA for a paternity suit was surreal enough. But even more incredibly, after 28 years buried in a crypt below his museum in Figueres, Spain, his trademark ’tache, was perfectly intact and, ‘still pointing to 10 past 10 o´clock, just as he liked it,’ according to the head of the Dalí Foundation. The embalmer was even more astounded, calling it ‘a miracle’. It’s certainly

a miracle no one was tempted to snip off this very personal piece of the artist’s legacy for posterity before putting its owner back in the ground. The exhibitionist Dalí would have relished the surreal charade, which ultimately proved he was not the father of Madrid tarot card reader Pilar Abel, who had to pay for digging him up. He once said, ‘I do not believe in my death and if someday I may die, though it is unlikely, I hope the people in the cafés will say, ‘Dalí has died, but not entirely.’ His obsession with upper lip hair began in the 1920s when he adopted ‘the smallest moustache in the world, which soon like the power of my imagination, continued to grow’. He styled it on the moustaches of his admired Velázquez and Philip IV of Spain, waxed it daily to keep it upright and twisted it into weird shapes. He even used it as a paintbrush and claimed his facial bristles were antennae for picking up creative inspirations. “Since I don't smoke, I decided to grow a moustache — it is better for the health,” the eccentric genius explained. “However, I always carried a jewelstudded cigarette case in which, instead of tobacco, were carefully placed

several moustaches... I offered them politely to my friends: Nobody dared to touch them. This was my test regarding the sacred aspect of moustaches.” Go figure. Along with his better-known artworks, he also bequeathed us Dali's Mustache, a photographic exploration of his psyche through 28 black and white images of his most distinctive facial feature – adorned with flowers, poking through the holes in a Gruyere cheese, or dipped in honey with a fly stuck to it. A collaboration with American portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, published in 1954, it bore the slogan: ‘Warning! of self-irony. In one image his moustache is fashioned into a dollar sign, referencing Avida Dollars (greedy for dollars) the derogatory anagram of his name coined by artist André Breton who thought Dalí’s commercialism was destroying the integrity of the Surrealist movement. The image is captioned: ‘Question: I have the feeling I have discovered your secret, Salvador. Could it be that you are crazy? Answer: I am certainly saner than the person who bought this book.’ Of course, unlike a true Mo Bro, Dalí was mainly in it for the Mo-ney. As well as producing over 1,500 paintings he turned his hand to movies, sculpture, photography, writing and advertising – the logo for Chupa Chups, the iconic Spanish lollipops, was one of his creations. He even doodled on his cheques before paying his bills, knowing they would never be cashed as the art was worth more! However, he was unquestionably ‘un hombre de bigote’ – literally, ‘a man of

the moustache’, as the Spanish say when they mean a man of character. Never more aptly in Dali’s case! Etymology note: Bigote is said to originate from the Reconquest of Granada when Swiss German crusaders fighting for the Catholic Monarchs used to scream ‘Bei Got’ (by God) as they charged the Moorish hordes. The only soldiers sporting moustaches (everyone else had beards), the Spanish nicknamed these fearless men of character ‘hombres de bigotes’ and, like a false moustache, the word and its heroic meaning stuck. e

Known for the cinematographic beauty and aesthetic symmetry of his films and for the dry, sardonic wit he imbues his characters with, Anderson is back with The French Dispatch, initially slated for release this month. The movie focuses on the French branch of an American magazine that is inspired on one of Anderson’s favourite papers – The New Yorker, known for its illustrated, topical covers, its commentaries on popular culture, and its coverage of the eccentric side of Americans. JUMPING TIMELINES

THE STARS

Anderson never disappoints when it comes to choosing actors and this film’s cast is no different. The ensemble includes the fantastic Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Little Women), as well as Anderson’s favourite actor aside from Owen Wilson – Bill Murray. Also appearing are Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand, Adrien Brody, Benicio Del Toro, Léa Seydoux, Liev Schreiber, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Saoirse Ronan, Anjelica Huston and many more renowned artists.

82 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

A LOVE LETTER TO JOURNALISTS

The film comprises three short stories within a larger framework. What all have in common is the homage they pay to journalism and its role in capturing defining cultural moments and movements. It is set in a fictional 20th Century French city. The action begins when the newspaper’s editors meet to pick three stories from their publication to republish in tribute to their late editor-in-chief.

As is the case in The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch features various timelines and stories, using different aspect ratios and blackand-white photography to differentiate between them. Anderson’s team created a whopping 125 different sets for the film, which was filmed in Angoulême, France – home to an abandoned felt factory that Anderson converted into a film studio. VISUAL INSPIRATION The French Dispatch, says production designer Adam Stockhausen, was inspired by the visual style of Albert Lamorisse’s The Red Balloon. Stockhausen claims that Anderson was taken by “how this 35-minute film focused on a beautifully grimy city, really gorgeous, [with] murky stuff on all of the architecture and then these glorious colours that come popping out from that.”

Anderson was also influenced by Orson Welles’ adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, “where all the sets were built inside this train station, and you can kind of see off the edges of the sets and see the architecture of the train station beyond it. That was a driving image for the prison set (one of the stories takes place in a prison) and you feel the location always. Even if you’re inside a room that we’ve entirely built. We’ve built it with no top, and

we built the walls out of mesh, and you kind-of never lose the sort of overarching sense of the space that you’re in.” NO LIMITS The French Dispatch has a budget of $25 million, making it one of Wes Anderson’s most expensive films. In addition to its impressive cast, it also relies on the work of some of the cinema industry’s finest talents – including cinematographer Robert Yeoman, composer

Alexandre Desplat, and editor Andrew Weisblum. As mentioned above, Adam Stockhausen has designed all 125 sets. THE RELEASE DATE? The release date has been slated for October 16 but with the current health situation, this may change. As is the case with Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (predicted to be a big box office record maker), the producers and director alike hope to release their films at a moment in which audiences can enjoy them in their logical home – a movie theatre! e

As the world waits to see what Covid-19 has in store for us with the cooler months approaching there's not much planned. Two gigs in Málaga are listed (see below). So check the Coast's weekly publications to see if anything is arranged. All info on this page was correct at the time of writing. Two October gigs in Málaga are still listed: Madrid heavy metal band OBÚS at Sala La Trinchera on the 2nd and PINK FLOYD tribute band PINK TONES at Sala París 15 on the 31st. Info and tickets: ticketmaster.es While the world slowly continues to return to the norm, the music world is leading the charge and this month sees loads of album releases and there's enough of them to fill this page alone. Big name releases include on October 2: Queen + Adam Lambert Live Around the World, BON JOVI with Bon Jovi: 2020, MARIAH CAREY with The Rarities and MEL C with Melanie C. The Christmas season comes early with A Holly Dolly Christmas by DOLLY PARTON and My Gift by CARRIE UNDERWOOD on October 2 and on the 30th, A Very Trainor Christmas by MEGHAN TRAINOR. LIAM GALLAGHER is on the moan again – he says he has not been invited to take part in next month's 25th anniversary soonto-be-filmed celebrations for the OASIS seminal album (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (which is also re-packaged on vinyl and CD on October 2). He is also "not interested" in a collaboration with 1990s Britpop rival DAMON ALBARN who releases a new album with his GORILLAZ project. Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez lands on October 23 and includes guest vocals from ELTON JOHN and ROBERT SMITH of THE CURE.

During lockdown SOPHIE ELLISBEXTOR entertained thousands with a series of miniconcerts from her home called Kitchen Disco (there's an album landing with the same name on October 23). The BBC have grabbed the rights for a much sought after documentary about THE POGUES singer SHANE MACGOWAN by legendary movie maker JULIAN TEMPLE (with a little help from JOHNNY DEPP) and it will air soon. They also broke the UK album chart record when the 1973 reissued Goats Head Soup topped the listings making them the first band in UK Official Chart history to score a Number 1 album across six different decades. Guitarist RONNIE WOOD says they have some "lovely music on the back burner" and they hope to return to the stage next summer with a 60-year anniversary tour. In our July issue we reported that ABBA would soon release two songs recorded in 2018 – wrong – BJÖRN ULVAEUS revealed the project has been pushed back to 2021 due to ‘technical difficulties’ as well as the ongoing pandemic crisis – but the good news is that there are now five new songs instead of two. LAUNCH OF

AMAZON MUSIC HD

WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

A

mazon recently launched Amazon Music HD – a new modality that has been added to its musical streaming offer, which features over 60 million HD songs, several million Ultra-HD songs, and an ever-growing catalogue of 3D audio files for Amazon’s Echo Studio smart speakers. 3D audio effects manipulate the sound produced by smart speakers or headphones, placing sound virtually anywhere in threedimensional space, including behind, above or below the listener. The service will cost €14,99 monthly or an additional €5 per month for those who are already clients of Amazon Music Unlimited.

86 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

Those who sign up for Amazon Music for the first time will have access to a 90-day free trial period of the new service, while those who are already Amazon Music Members will enjoy Amazon Music HD for 90 days with no extra cost. WHAT MAKES THE STREAMING SERVICE SO SPECIAL? Amazon execs decided to launch this service after speaking with various artists who were excited about being able to stream Ultra-HD music to their audiences. Finally, fans will be able to hear each song exactly how it was originally recorded. Steve Boom, Vice-President of Amazon Music, told the press: “Being able to listen to any genre of music, be it rock,

hip-hop, classical music or pop in this dynamic way will encourage listeners to fall in love all over again with their favourite artists. Ultra-HD music offers a different emotion, power, and sound definition, but it also contains all the little details and quirks of original recordings.” Standard services play smaller-sized files; in order to produce them, details of the original audio are removed. Now, audiences can hear every tiny detail and feel more immersed in complex sound.

This is the most important thing that has happened to music since digital music hit the market 40 years ago.”

LUSTER

Raven Leilani’s debut book is an explosion of emotion and also a refreshingly honest read that refuses to represent its protagonist as a heroine. She dreams of being an artist yet avoids actually painting, her love life is disastrous, and she doesn’t have any sense of real direction. Her adventures begin when

she meets Eric – a middle-aged man in an open marriage. When Edie is fired from her job she moves in with Eric and his wife and forms a connection with the couple’s adopted daughter, Akila. Edie slowly begins to gain a greater sense of grounding as she struggles to believe in her own talent and discovers more about herself through her interactions with each of the family members.

Every detail of the wedding has been planned to perfection but there is one little problem: the guest list. THE DEATH OF VIVEK OJI BY AKWAEKE EMEZI

It is a hot afternoon in southeastern Nigeria when a mother opens her front door to discover her son, Vivek’s dead body, wrapped in colourful fabric, at her feet. Soon, we are plunged into the emotion-packed story of one family’s struggle to understand a child who is as mysterious as he is gentle. Raised by a cold father and loving but slightly smothering mother, Vivek suffers strange blackouts and moments of detachment from the present

Vivek’s soulmate is Osita, his seemingly confident cousin who hides secrets of her own fragility. As they get closer, Osita struggles to understand Vivek’s mental crisis, when one moment of violence enables her to comprehend everything. The book is moving, highly engaging, and emotionpacked; an ideal read if you are undergoing a moment of self-reflection.

WHITE FRAGILITY

BY ROBIN DIANGELO

The #BlackLivesMatter movement continues to point out inherent societal flaws that need addressing if change is to be made. White Fragility delves into key issues surrounding these problems, particularly that of white sensitivity about discussing racism. Author Robin DiAngelo was inspired to write the book after listening to people repeatedly espouse that they “were taught to treat everyone the

same.” She found that they were somehow extremely defensive when their ideas on race and racism were challenged – particularly when they felt implicated in the topic of white supremacy. The book argues against the penchant for protecting people against racial discomfort. It is vital, she says, to build up ‘racial stamina’ to tackle difficult issues headon, without changing the subject.e

On the banned list for 30 years, D.H. Lawrence’s classic ‘dirty book’ went legit 60 years ago this month during a watershed obscenity trial at London’s Old Bailey. The Not Guilty verdict dragged ‘sexplicit’ literature out of the Victorian closet into the Permissive Age and Lady Chatterley’s Lover became required reading for every 1960s teenager behind the school bike shed. Belinda Beckett has the unexpurgated highlights.

LADY C FOR THE PRICE OF 10 CIGARETTES

The epic trial of Regina v Penguin Books was a test case for 1959’s change to Britain’s Obscene Publications Act. For the first time, four-letter words and sex scenes might be ‘acceptable’ IF the work as a whole was proved to have literary merit – in court. Although Lady Chatterley’s Lover is riddled with sex and ‘colourful’ language, no one doubted the literary merit of D.H. Lawrence, author of 12 novels, 13 short story collections, 17 poetry anthologies and five plays. Written in 1928, two years before he died, the unabridged version had never been published in Britain, although Lawrence had a few thousand copies run off privately in Italy, where no one understood the language. A Not Guilty verdict looked like an easy win for Penguin. The unexpurgated Lady C in paperback for three shillings and sixpence, the price of 10 Rothmans King Size, was sure to be a best seller.

13 explicit sex scenes, 30 F-words and 14 C-words. This rare book, and its cover, still exists. Sold at auction for £56,250, it was acquired for posterity last year by Bristol University in a crowd-funding appeal headed by Stephen Fry. Adopting a publish-and-bedamned approach, Penguin printed 200,000 copies, sent a batch to the Director of Public Prosecutions and waited for the court summons.

A BOOK FOR MEN ONLY …

Despite the ban, unabridged copies could be bought under the counter if you knew where to look. …TRIED BY WOMEN

There were three women on the jury, which was unusual. Even in the Swinging Sixties, females could be excused from jury service at obscenity trials to protect them from ‘depravity and corruption’. Penguin Books turned down the option, even exchanging one male juror for a female in the belief that women would be more open-minded.

NOT FIT FOR WIVES AND SERVANTS

The Prosecution provoked laughter in court with its opening statement: “Is it a book you would wish your wife or your servants to read?” Most people no longer had servants and, after all, the judge had already asked his own wife to read it. Lawyers barely touched on the book’s veiled reference to the criminal act of anal sex, which Penguin saw as the biggest threat to publication, choosing to fixate on the adultery and fourletter-word count. Neither side mentioned the racist quote about sex with ‘black women and, somehow, well, we’re white men: and they’re a bit like 94 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

mud’, which might be considered the most offensive passage today…

LEGITIMISING THE F-WORD

The Defence called 35 expert witnesses – journalists, critics, teachers, E.M. Forster, four Anglican churchmen – to back up their case. The Bishop of Woolwich provoked muffled sniggers when he likened the sex to ‘an act of holy communion’. But sociologist Richard Hoggart impressed with his brief dissertation on the F-Word. “We have no word in English for this act which is not either a long abstraction or an evasive euphemism, and we are constantly running away from it, or dissolving into dots,” he said. “Lawrence wanted to say, ‘This is what one does. In a simple, ordinary way, one f*cks,’ with no sniggering or dirt.”

Lady Chatterley’s Lover from 1981

The 2015 BBC TV film was panned by critics for omitting four-letter words entirely

Interestingly, most family publications ( included) still use asterisks today!

A RESULT FOR LIBERALISM

After the Not Guilty verdict, Penguin’s paperbacks flew off the shelves, notching up two million sales that year. It was a win for artistic freedom and vindication for D.H. Lawrence. In his mission to bring sex out into the open in literature, he had refused to cut a single four-letter word, stating, “I might as well try to clip my own nose into shape with scissors”. More seismically, the verdict untied the last stays on the corset of Victorian

morality and ushered in the uncensored freedoms of the Permissive Society. The Pill came along in 1961, abortion in 1967, divorce reform in 1969… and theatre critic Kenneth Tynan uttered the first F-word on British TV in 1965. Or, as the poet Philip Larkin delightfully put it in Annus Mirabilis (1967):

‘Sexual intercourse began In nineteen sixty-three (which was rather late for me) – Between the end of the “Chatterley” ban And the Beatles’ first LP.’ WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 95

People looking for a luxurious contemporary villa in a private gated community have so far been restricted to locations such as La Zagaleta, Sierra Blanca and Nueva Andalucía, but with the creation of la Fuente, modern villa living in a secure private oasis of greenery is now also possible in one of the most desirable locations in Marbella – on the edge of the Golden Mile, Marbella town and their beaches. rnesto Palanco is a noted Marbella architect, also known for not taking every job he is offered but rather carefully selecting the ones that enthuse and inspire him. “I have to believe in a project to feel connected with it,” says the man himself, “as I believe it is under such circumstances that you produce your best work.” He didn’t hesitate when he was approached to work on the creation of 15 private villas at La Fuente. There are many luxurious contemporary villa developments in the greater Marbella area, but very few on the Golden Mile and near the centre of Marbella town. “In fact, the Golden Mile is one WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 105

What makes La Fuente special is the fact that it combines all of the above factors – including being walking distance from the beaches of the Golden Mile and the Marbella downtown area. “It is a private domain of

greenery on the edge of the Golden Mile that borders a park within walking distance of town and beaches,” says Smadar. In location as well as lifestyle offering, this gated community of modern villas is unique indeed.

A PRIVATE OASIS IN MARBELLA Situated a few hundred metres from the beach and close to the many amenities and diversions of the Golden Mile, Marbella’s historic quarter and the downtown area, La Fuente is discreetly tucked away amid greenery in what is a very private and secure location. “You wouldn’t have known it was here in the first place, and when the gated villa community is completed and ready to move into, this won’t change,” says Smadar, whose agency is the commercial agent for what is one of Marbella’s

Such a special location deserves nothing but the best in terms of design, build quality and amenities, which is why it and architect Ernesto Palanco are such a natural match. “La Fuente is a concept, a lifestyle brand in its own right that is almost impossible to replicate, for its charm is predicated on a uniquely privileged location that blends the finest elements of resort and urban living, access to amenities and privacy,” says Ernesto. “Doing this unique offering justice through design is a challenge and an

URBAN VILLAS IN A PARKLAND SETTING Ernesto Palanco and his team have worked hard to create a villa community worthy of such a special place to call home, also taking in the firsthand buyer feedback provided by Engel & Völkers. “Our clients want contemporary homes that offer all the latest style and conveniences,” says Smadar, “but combined with Mediterranean charm and architectural references in a setting

designed around lifestyle enjoyment and a location close to amenities such as restaurants, cafés, shops and beaches. These days, being able to walk to them is a true luxury indeed.” Taking this on board, the emphasis has been laid upon creating privacy within a community, combining modern luxuries with traditional character, and blending style with homeliness. The architect has eschewed stark white minimalism in favour

of modern architecture that incorporates local, vernacular design elements. For this reason, the geometry is not rectangular, but with volumes broken and detail added without forsaking clean lines. Natural materials such as stone and wood are incorporated in the exterior design as well as in the interior, where they are employed in the form of large-format tiles and wooden detailing that helps to make the openplan interior spaces intimate and cosy.

Gorgeous landscaping, views and outdoor lifestyle areas come together in La Fuente homes

Fantastic views in the midst of privacy and comfort

112 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

Natural elements are a common part of the design of La Fuente, with each of the villas featuring a central chimney structure in stone, which, together with the wooden decking and latticed balustrades and dividers, softens the modern Mediterranean geometry. The result is a harmonising of styles that takes contemporary architecture away from stark white cubism and is further beautified by infinity edge swimming pools, sleekly styled water features and Mediterranean greenery and flowering plants. Being indigenous, the latter are low-

maintenance and droughtresistant, offering a profusion of verdant tones with splashes of lavender and cherry rose. All of this is set within the established greenery of a mature garden, complete with tall trees that delineate the community and frame its views. Stone and wood detailing also feature in the rooftop solarium, the ultimate lifestyle space with its step-up plunge pool or hot tub, from which you can take in wonderful views over Marbella, La Concha Mountain, and the sea as you luxuriate in its soothing water. The area is made for private relaxation and entertaining, fitted with a lounge and dining area, sunbathing and cooking spaces. “A high degree of personal detailing is built into the concept,” says Smadar, “allowing owners to create a living environment customised to their tastes and needs.”

modern Mediterranean entrance gate with elegant design and modern water features provides a suitably engaging sense of arrival. “For us, the task was to take this fantastic location and create domiciles here which discerning buyers would want to call home.” Though some of the villas will be bought as second homes, they have been designed from the outset to be luxurious

‘Molo’, which means ‘pier’ in English, is a construction by a sea, lake, or river, that extends from the surface of the land into the sea. It is an anchor for boats, a resting point for sailors and a refuge from the waves. It is also a ‘return to Earth’ for human beings. PERSONALISED

NUTRITION

HOW GENETIC TESTING CAN HELP YOU

WHAT FIELDS ARE PERSONALISED NUTRITION BASED ON? PN is based on analytical technologies utilised by trained practitioners who draw from various bodies of science – including genomics, epigenetics, systems biology, medicine, and behavioral science, in addition to traditional nutritional science.

it answers questions that have left millions of people across the world stumped. ‘If I’m eating healthily, why is it so hard for me to lose weight?’ ‘Why do I feel so tired when I am exercising and following a Mediterranean diet?’

WHY IS PERSONALISED NUTRITION IMPORTANT? These questions cannot be answered without KEY QUESTIONS professional help, for “Not everyone who is obese blood, urine, and other eats copious amounts or tests are required to hone is inactive; not everyone in more precisely on your who is thin is healthy.” stumbling blocks. can also reduce insecurity. Research indicates that the vast majority of people encounter conflicting information about food and more than half doubt the nutritional choices they make. Most receive nutritional information from social media – a source that lacks the scientific backing required to make the claims it sometimes does WHAT DOES PERSONALISED NUTRITION INVOLVE? There are four main stages to PN. The first involves testing (e.g. blood and urine), as well as intensive questioning about behaviours. It includes advanced analyses of inflammation, microbial panels, nutritional genomic reports, and a study of environmental

Up to 36 per cent of people are on specific diets to lose weight and boost their health – according to a recent survey published by the International Food Information Council Foundation. Keto, Paleo, Atkins, Low-Cal… all these might sound familiar and you may have had a stab at all of them without achieving your long-term goals. The reason why, say clinical dietitians, is that no two individuals are alike. Personalised nutrition (PN) postulates that variability in biochemistry, metabolism, genetics, and microbiota contribute to a dramatic difference in the way each of us responds to specific foods, the time we eat, environmental exposures, and nutrient status. PN is sometimes referred to as ‘nutritional genomics’ or ‘individualised nutrition’. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

contaminants. The second phase requires the dietitian’s interpretation of the data obtained. The third is all about guidance – the provision of a personalised plan. The fourth involves monitoring the patient and providing feedback. WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL GENOMICS? You may have paused on the term nutritional genomics (just one of the many analyses carried out during a visit to a clinical dietitian). Essentially, it is a branch of medicine that seeks to prevent and manage diseases through

136 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

targeted nutritional therapies which are catered to the individuals’ genetic makeup. The clinical dietitian looks for genetic variants that may help them understand your genetic response to diet and to identify variants linked to dietrelated diseases. For instance, some people have galactosemia – a partial inability to break down galactose (a constituent of lactose and many polysaccharides) owing to defects in one specific gene. The simple solution for this problem is to limit the intake of foods containing galactose.

ADDRESSING THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF IMBALANCE A personal nutritional plan involves far more than simply providing patients with a dietary plan. This is because the biggest stumbling blocks may be sleep, stress, timing of eating, cultural considerations and other factors. The role of the clinical dietitian is to formulate a complex plan that takes into account all these factors so they can provide advice and guidance from a multifaceted perspective. Achieving nutritional goals isn’t easy but having all the information your body can give is a key strategy to a longer, healthier, and happier life. e

PUPS MAY SUFFER SEVERE SOCIAL ANXIETY WHEN THE PANDEMIC IS OVER It’s something everyone in the world is looking forward to, yet the end of the pandemic is likely to cause a problem for dogs, who have been enjoying the constant companionship of owners who are currently working remotely. The warning comes from none other than Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi trainer, who said that social distancing has caused pooches to build up a “huge reservoir of over dependency.” To ease anxiety in your pooch, try to bring them to work and get them used to being alone by ensuring you are apart from them for at least half an hour a day.

142 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

ALMOST THREE QUARTERS OF DOG OWNERS ALLOW THEM TO SLEEP IN THEIR BED A recent survey by food company Stonyfield Organic has found that people have been getting closer to their dogs in recent months, with around 64 per cent of individuals taking more walks with Fido and around 75 per cent happily sharing

their bed and/or the sofa with Rex. If you are one of them, make sure to bathe your pet regularly; parks and lawns can contain pesticides that can stick to your dog’s fur, causing harm to their health as well as yours. Check out the #PlayFree initiative, which encourages homeowners and governments to embrace organic lawn and garden maintenance methods.

YOUR DOG WILL RESCUE YOU… IF IT KNOWS HOW If you were trapped in a box, would your dog actually try to rescue you? Scientists at Arizona State University sought to answer this question, placing 60 dog owners in a box with a lightweight door that dogs could move aside. The owners were asked to feign distress by crying out for help but they were told not to call their dog’s name (which would encourage the dog to act out of obedience instead of genuine desire). The results of the experiment showed that around one third of the dogs rescued their owner, which was considered ‘very impressive’ by the researchers. This is because many more dogs wanted to help but simply didn’t know how to open the door. The researchers also conducted a control test in which dogs watched the researchers drop food into the box. Only 19 out of 60 opened the box to get to the food, which shows that they love their owners even more than a tasty snack. e

DISSOLUTION OF JOINT PROPERTY OWNERSHIP

146 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

Are you fed up with your partner? Did you know there is a special procedure in Spain to terminate property co-ownership which saves you up to 86% in taxes? Solicitor Raymundo Larraín explains to us how to re-arrange asset holdings in Spain between family and friends without attracting a great deal of taxes. Interested? Read on. WORDS RAYMUNDO LARRAÍN NESBITT DIRECTOR OF LARRAÍN NESBITT ABOGADOS

INTRODUCTION In this article, we explain a special legal procedure that can be followed in Spain to re-arrange property holdings which saves buyers a considerable amount in taxes. On buying resale property in Spain, a buyer is normally subject to 8% Property Transfer Tax (ITP), or even more, on the sales proceeds. However, on following what is known as a ‘Dissolution of Joint Property Ownership’ (or DJPO, for short) a buyer attracts only 1.5% Stamp Duty. The catch is

that you must already be a joint owner for this tax advantage to apply. In plain English, this procedure saves you 86% in tax, or more.

1.5% Stamp Duty (or less).

DJPO REQUIREMENTS Z Both buyer and seller must be pre-existing owners of a property, i.e. a married couple who DEFINITION own a property under joint A Dissolution of Joint names. APPLICABLE CASES A DJPO is suitable in a number of cases involving joint property ownership: 1 – In a divorce or separation. Couples owning property jointly may decide to split up. Taking for granted they own a property in equal shares, one of them decides to sell their 50% to their ex-partner. The ex-partner will pay them their quota on this transaction. 2 – Re-arranging inheritances. Beneficiaries of an inheritance transferring their quota on a property to a fellow heir. For example, sisters who inherit property transfer a share between them. 3 – Re-arranging property holdings between family and friends. Stakeholders such as family, friends

148 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

or investors co-owning a property may decide to re-arrange their holdings. ASSOCIATED TAXES & EXPENSES Both buyer and seller are subject to pay taxes on transferring ownership of the asset. Z BUYER: • Pays 1.5% Stamp Duty on the outgoing share.* • Lawyer’s fees • Notary fees • Land Registry fees • Pays the percentage of the property’s value *In some regions of Spain, due to devolved competencies, it is in fact well-below this quoted tax rate.

Z SELLER: • Pays Capital Gains Tax (CGT, for short) on the outgoing share. • If the seller is non-resident, a 3% retention may be practiced on the outgoing share. N CONCLUSION A Dissolution of Joint Property Ownership is optimal to mitigate a buyer’s tax burden. In fact, it saves them 86% in taxes, or more, in a legal manner. A seller’s CGT can also be greatly mitigated, or even completely negated, on applying for lenient tax relief. However, a DJPO may not apply in all cases. Seek legal advice on the matter. A non-contentious DJPO works much like a conveyance and can be arranged within a few days providing both parties agree to it. It can be arranged without any need to fly over to Spain by way of granting your appointed Spanish lawyer a specific power of attorney. The new re-arranged ownership will then be lodged at the Land Registry after the associated taxes are settled. A DJPO neatly puts to rest the financial side of couples’ ongoing marital disputes, legally saving them a great deal in taxes. It’s a win-win.

THE VALUE OF DISCRETION, KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND INTEGRITY

CALLUM SWAN REALTY

Things have come full circle since I last visited the offices of Callum Swan Realty to see Callum and his wife, Louise. When we last spoke, their eldest daughter, Leila, was completing the fourth year of her Law degree and their younger daughter Romily was just 13. Today, Romily has started her fourth year in Law and Leila has just finished her Master’s degree at Oxford University. The company’s office, meanwhile, once located in Nueva Andalucía, moved to Las Torres del Marbella Club seven years ago. “We decided to purchase this office as we wished to consolidate our presence here and the Golden Mile is our area of speciality, as is La Zagaleta, Sierra Blanca and Nueva Andalucía,” says Louise. WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE ARE KEY Callum Swan Realty has always been a firm that prefers to give quality time and attention to discerning clients instead of aiming to hit all sales points in the industry. Callum and Louise have over 60 years of combined experience in real estate and know Marbella inside-out. Louise arrived in Marbella around four decades ago while Callum has lived in the area for over 30 years. 150 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

Louise’s parents decided to move their family to Marbella, so Callum eventually resolved to call the Coast home as well. Many have no experience, qualifications, or knowledge of legal and business matters. Their listings are often doubled up on their website, with the same listing sometimes appearing several times with various prices – including the wrong

MARVELLOUS MARBELLA Callum and Louise feel that they are part of Marbella and that Marbella is part of them. “This is a safe area that some of the most intelligent, enterprising individuals in Europe choose to call home. Bear in mind these people have the ability to live anywhere they want – Sardinia, Miami, Portugal. But so many choose Marbella. There are many reasons – especially the great weather and the number of direct flights into Málaga,” explains Callum. Additionally, Marbella has a reputation for its excellent international schools and it is also known for the quality of the available property. A TIGHTLY RUN SHIP Callum and Louise captain a ship with a wonderful staff who are like family to them. The team includes Office

Manager, Sabrina – who runs the office and carries out a host of tasks including rentals, client service, administrative and legal matters and more. Sabrina has worked with Callum and Louse for 17 years and she has been at Callum Swan Real Estate for seven years. Like Callum and Louise, she is an expert in all things to do with Marbella. “Wherever you go, she always knows someone who can help you out with great information on everything from nannies to local businesses.” Other key players include Claire (who conducts sales alongside Callum) and Fath-zhar, who is involved in administration. The vibe at the office is unique; the staff is friendly and everyone smiles from the heart when you enter. Happiness can, indeed, be measured with a smile, a look, or a gesture.

The office is beautifully designed. Grey in hue and modern in style, it is divided into a basement area with offices and a seating area, a ground floor, and an upper floor. The latter boasts a sofa and lounge area where clients can have a chat with the team while enjoying a drink. The relaxing vibe very much fits with the personality of Louise and the rest of the team. BUILDING LASTING RELATIONSHIPS Of course, Callum Swan is just as likely to give advice to property vendors and purchasers in faroff corners of the world. “We recently travelled to Switzerland to help with a sale and we have advised clients in Mallorca, the UK and other areas in which clients are making investments, purchases, or sales. Dominik and Patrick Maroszek blend local knowledge with an international approach

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON REAL ESTATE

THE MAROBROTHERS Young and creative, brothers Dominik and Patrick Maroszek are introducing a fresh new approach to real estate on the Costa del Sol. Raised in Marbella, they have lived here for 20 years and earned their stripes with property companies before embarking on a new-style real estate start-up that is making waves. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY KEVIN HORN

ost industries are pretty set in their methodology; in fact, try to modify things too much and you might just end up ‘reinventing the wheel’, so these days most change involves the growing use of newly emerging technologies. In real estate, this includes long-distance

communication methods, drones and more recently virtual viewing tools. But real estate is above all a service industry, and as such it is centred on the agent-client relationship, be it with a buyer or the vendor. This personal connection is at the heart of the broker role played by property professionals. WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 155

In an era of call centres and online forms, this kind of one-to-one service is perhaps more valuable than ever. But there’s another vital element in real estate – that of marketing – and it’s perhaps the field that has evolved the most over the past two decades, moving from footfall and 156 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

trade fair branding to digital strategies that revolve around website searches, content and SEO. Good marketing material and advertising are still essential, but now companies also communicate their brand values through social media and other new forms of engagement. “We’re

fully focused on digital marketing,” says Dominik Maroszek, who represents a new generation of professionals shaking things up in Marbella. “There are new disruptive technologies changing industries all over the world, and it’s time that Marbella joins these powerful global trends.”

NEW FORMS OF ENGAGEMENT IN A CHANGING WORLD

It’s a changing landscape in which the traditional tenets of personal service and ethical business remain unchanged, yet new ways of reaching and engaging with potential buyers are creating a quiet revolution. In an informationbased world it is no longer enough to simply present properties, as today’s buyers come well-informed but seek a sense of what makes different homes special. Working in an interactive way that blends insight with an open, light-hearted approach, the MaroBrothers do just that. “The Covid period made us aware that there should be more information available to prospective buyers, without having to fill in forms before you are given access.”

He refers to the kind of free information that is now the norm in many markets. “We always wanted to work together, so when we launched MaroBrothers Realty we had a clear concept of what we wanted our business to be like,” says Patrick, who worked for Sotheby’s in Zurich, while Dominik gained experience at Engel & Völkers. The result is a specialised high-end boutique agency with a modern yet personal feel, which builds on the brothers’ personal connection with Marbella but also identifies with the way things are done in the wider world. “To offer the right kind of commitment and personal service you can’t be too big and impersonal,” says Patrick, “but you also have to be innovative. These are two fundamental elements

that shape our business, and have allowed us to follow a different route. Finding a lot of marketing cold and impersonal, they prefer a more informal, direct approach, and rather than relying heavily on a website, the MaroBrothers have in a short time made a name for themselves with video presentations of their luxury property listings that are not only informative, but

158 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

also highly engaging, and in the process create a bridge between conventional property displays and personal viewings. The honest, fun way in which Dominik takes viewers through luxury homes on the Costa del Sol provides a very lifelike experience that highlights their appeal but also gives an accurate reflection of dimensions, orientation, style, layout

and amenities – from the broader picture right down to the details. Even more important is the fact that the brothers manage to convey a sense of the home, how it feels to be in and what is special about it. STRIKING A CHORD WITH BUYERS This, more than ever in the age of Covid, has hit a chord with potential buyers, many of whom

Dominik scaling a rock to approach the property

use the YouTube videos posted by the MaroBrothers as a highly convenient way of comparing different properties that interest them. “There is no substitution for entering a property yourself and allowing your senses to tell you the story,” says Dominik, “but at a time when travel is restricted and time is a valuable commodity, this is an accurate way to showcase it.” And this he does with an enthusiasm and charm that has caught on with many, including creating a connection with younger buyers. In fact, the combination of Patrick’s production skills and Dominik’s natural charisma in front of the camera produces the right blend of information and engagement, judging by viewing figures that run in the multiple thousands, and reach potential buyers in Europe, the Americas and the Middle East. What’s more, the MaroBrothers don’t charge for promotion, but invest their time and resources in the properties they believe in, also working with other agents to add a fresh approach to

marketing. In doing things in a way that comes natural to them, Dominik and Patrick Maroszek have found a means to connect with a growing audience and are part of a new wave of young professionals who will eventually transform the local property sector and bring it in line with the rest of the world. However, even if video production of this kind catches on in Marbella, the very personal way the brothers promote quality properties between Sotogrande and Málaga is hard to replicate. “We know that this is only one aspect of an agent’s work, but it marks the way in which we work,” says Patrick, whose creative approach to video production forms part of a philosophy that also sees the brothers preferring a personal conversation and briefing with homebuyers over receiving an email contact form. As Dominik says: “We would rather send our clients four or five targeted proposals than bombard them with unrelated choices, and we never ask them to fill in forms first.” CHECK THEM OUT ON YOUTUBE UNDER MAROBROTHERS. g MAROBROTHERS Dominik Maroszek: (+34) 638 187 985. GRUPO PROTEC

CONSTRUCTION, WINDOWS AND DOORS, AND HIGH-END PRODUCT DISTRIBUTION The Protec Group, comprising a team of over 40 talented specialists in their fields, has grown from strength to strength since its establishment in 1996. Back then, CEO and founder André Jensen, who at the time worked in sales, chanced upon the opportunity to launch a company that was centered on windows and doors, and Protec Ventanas S.L. was born. Just four years later, in 2000, the company expanded into construction and Protec Construcciones S.L. was born. Today, the group has a third fundamental pillar: Protec Distribuciones, dedicated to the acquisition and distribution of high-quality construction products which are otherwise unavailable in Spain. As is evident, André Jensen and his wife Silvia are a forwardthinking couple who are constantly ready to adapt to changing and extended demands. n my recent visit to Protec, I was impressed by the sheer scale of their operations. They have three large warehouses and offices, with numerous departments filled with dynamic teams of technicians. Silvia explains, “We specialise in top quality windows and doors, offering discerning clients features like thermal insulation, anti-theft protection, and energysavings.” Windows that are made-to-measure

can help a home save up to 60 per cent of lost energy, by keeping heat out in warmer months and bringing warmth in, in colder ones. Silvia takes me through the installations, telling me about the fascinating history of Protec. “Our first big construction project was a villa in El Rosario,” she says. “We got into construction because as our client base grew, many began asking us if we knew of someone reliable to take on large-scale

construction work. We knew many trusted suppliers so we began creating vital synergies with them, and today, we have a tight-knit group comprising reliable professionals in everything within the construction industry.” Renovations are another big source of business for Protec. Some clients simply request the refurbishment of their pool and garden areas; others might require a complete change.

“All our workers have ample experience in Germany, UK and Spain and they are familiar with the construction methods used in each of this countries, including those pertaining to cold/ heat insulation, antihumidity protection, etc. “We essentially provide all the construction work required, from start to finish, offering a complete turnkey service so that clients do not have to worry about licences and bureaucratic matters.” One of the many qualities that makes the Protec Group so fitting for the Costa del Sol is that the team is multilingual. Staff can attend to clients in a plethora of languages, including Spanish, English, German, Portuguese, Swedish, Arabic and Russian. “We are an international company and our aim is to make construction and window selection easy for clients wishing to speak in the language they are most comfortable with.” The 162 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

international nature of the company is symbolised by André and Silvia themselves. The couple met when Silvia (who, like André, is German) was in Spain for the holidays. Her mother needed new windows, and André, who was already enjoying great success in this sector, stepped into their home and a spark was lit. Despite having branched out into construction, windows and doors are still an important source of activity for Protec. “People give us a call and we send our technical representative to their home so we can provide them with a quote.” Silvia takes me to the window manufacturing area and I am surprised to see a window maker holding a

six-meter-high window frame. “This is nothing compared to some of the largest ones we make,” says the designer, indicating the type of high-end villas, buildings, and other projects Protec serves. The key value that has led the Protec name from success to success, says Silvia, is dependability. The team works in close conjunction with architects, ensuring all projects have appropriate building licences – a matter that has become far more stringent in the past few years. Over the years, Protec has also built key relationships with plumbers, electricians, floor specialists – just about every service required to build a home.

Protec’s current projects extend from Nerja to Sotogrande, varying greatly in nature and size. As we walk through the vast buildings in the Polígono (located in Fuengirola), Silvia introduces me to everyone, ranging from those attending clients for window and construction matters, to those working in admin, workshop heads, members of the sales team, accountants, and more. The impressive home base also has a

large meeting room to attend visitors. Here, high-end TVs and other tech equipment make it easy for clients to envision the way their home or building will look like. Protec is a friendly, international team that is ready to take all the work of reformation or complete construction off your hands. If you simply wish to change a door or window or you are after energyefficient solutions for your home, give them a call. The responsible team members of the Protec Group are ready to provide you many options which can make a significant change to your quality of life. g PROTEC GROUP Camino Pera de Agua 81-104 Pol. They were the liquid nigiricroqueta with kimchi and tuna belly tartare, the pan con tunaka (tuna loin sashimi on crunchy crystal bread with a tomato pulp and extra-virgin olive oil, semi-dried tomato, shichimi togarashi and dehydrated tomato), and the smoked ajoblanco with barbecued sardine and fig sorbet. The culinary traditions of Japan, Korea, and Spain were strongly present, yet Pablo (born in Málaga and raised in Marbella) is just as likely to grace his dishes with Cuban or Morrocan touches. honing his craft under the great Ramón Freixa of Mesana, he set his sight on Varadero (Cuba), picking up an extensive knowledge of its rich and varied gastronomy. In Marbella, he has shone at many top establishments – including Ocean Club, where he undertook the role of Executive Chef. His many years of experience would lead to fruitful meetings with other chefs and restaurateurs – for instance, Top of Top Thai, as well as chefs specialising in Japanese cuisine. embraced. This year, Pablo was inspired by the idea of ‘beach picnics’. If you have been in Málaga for any length of time, then you know that families often pack tortilla, gazpacho and breaded chicken for lunch on the beach. Pablo gives these treats a twist by serving his version of them on a transparent dish perched atop sand sourced from Tarifa. “I like to surprise diners and I sometimes achieve this by using ingredients that form the basis of revered recipes in countries in Latin America – including papaya, tubers like yams and yucas, and other primary ingredients. The concept of world cuisine is infinite and I enjoy creating completely new dishes

that are nevertheless reminiscent of well-loved recipes.” Despite enjoying experimentation, Pablo says, “I always keep my feet on the ground and my starting point is invariably traditional cuisine.” He imbues the latter, of course, with layer upon layer of creativity and imagination, changing ingredients and techniques according to the seasons and the seeds of inspiration he finds. DROWNING ONE’S SORROWS? WORDS PHILIP HARRIS

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION DURING LOCKDOWN The holiday plans of millions have been upset and will continue to be by Coronavirus. Uncertainty and worry about travel and quarantine have prevented the customary summer exodus. However, news headlines suggest that we’ve all been drinking as if we’re on holiday – a six-month one! This generalisation was dangerous: many were endeavouring to save their businesses and had to fight like never before. The reemergence of COVID-19 spikes means their battle continues which is impractical when constantly inebriated. Front line workers couldn’t indulge with abandon, although they’d have just cause to seek a coping mechanism. So was the rest of the population in a constant alcoholic haze and what was actually the reality? 188 / OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2020

uring the initial months of the crisis, people were exhorted to stay indoors or at least go outdoors as little as possible but clement weather during late March and April made that difficult. This presented an even greater danger than Coronavirus by being mown down on a pavement by joggers and cyclists who would not deviate an inch from their chosen path. The imposition of lockdown measures and support schemes involved with job ‘hibernation’ meant that many would be at a loose end until circumstances allowed. For those who fell outside every ‘safety

net’ subsequently offered by their governments, the incentive to remain professional diminished accordingly. The longer the shutdown continued, weekdays, weekends and public holidays just homogenised, especially for those whose daily routine of work had dried up. With so much time available, resolutions and good intentions were made to fill the gaping hole that loomed. In retrospect, I imagine that more were broken or unfulfilled during Coronavirus lockdown than those made on January 1st. I doubt anyone made the resolution to drink more – not even me – so it was

good to set out a task for the day to establish some semblance of order. The lockdown of hairdressers led to ever-increasing lengths of hair, but once looking like a hippy remnant of 1969 had been accepted, the deterrent of looking unprofessional on Zoom subsided as did normal work related strictures. With no need to commute and with the hospitality sector closed, drinking at home increased. Perhaps the first glass of the day was enjoyed at an earlier hour, even lunch, safe in the knowledge that nothing professional had to be carried out subsequent to intake. After the initial shock of the virus, humour gradually re-emerged, as did aptly named cocktails: ‘the Quarantini’ being one, along with health advice: ‘You can’t touch your face with a glass in both hands.’ Amidst a tsunami of understandably bad news and gloom, getting to the weekend in one piece became something to celebrate although it might have been brought forward

to Thursday in some households. Community spirit (no, not an alcoholic version) emerged, such as people helping more vulnerable neighbours with their shopping: I ended up doing that for my wife’s previous husband! Along with worrying about masks plus the inherent danger of inadvertent contamination, it was certainly enough to drive me into the embrace of alcohol. Gradually headlines emerged about lockdown behaviour: two themes grabbed attention, verging on voyeuristic at times. Firstly the amount of sex that couples were said to be having – okay, what do you do once the 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle palls? Secondly, the record spikes that drinks retailers were experiencing, with many reporting sales similar to Christmas, although amid such rises, the beer brand Corona suffered badly, which is perhaps not surprising. Did this mean that Coronavirus had turned nations from ‘glass half full’ to ‘glass always full’; or a

case of ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’? Consumers stockpiled, perhaps cautious after waves of needless, selfish panic buying had stripped shelves bare. Retailers who could deliver made hay, profiting both from a fear of going out (imagine the shame of being seen with TWO bottles of gin in your basket) as well as the weight of glass. However, there is currently no proof that consumption of whatever alcoholic sector matched respective purchases. Nor was quality ditched in favour of cheaper alternatives to keep up with consumption. On a small but accurate scale, the pattern of uptake from offers from my wife’s wine company reflect both trends. A poll which asked whether the population was definitely drinking more, found that only one per cent admitted to that, so perhaps alcohol impairs honesty as much as memory. Continue to enjoy drinking, but please don’t let it take your guard down. e WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 189
