managing pain

Pain responds well to acupuncture treatments

M

ANAGING PAIN is a frequent concern for a lot of Americans as 25 percent of respondents to a National Health Interview (NHI) Survey reported experiencing recent pain of more than one day’s duration. Americans who are turning to acupuncture as an option for pain management are on the rise. In the 2002 NHI survey approximately 2.13 million Americans reported using acupuncture for pain in the previous 12 months and in the 2007 survey that number had increased to 3.1 million. In our acupuncture clinics we have performed over 36,800 acupuncture treatments since 2007, and our weekly number of treatments continues to rise.

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, “A special analysis of acupuncture data from an earlier NHIS found that pain or musculoskeletal complaints accounted for seven of the top 10 conditions for which people use acupuncture. Back pain was the most common, followed by joint pain, neck pain, severe headache/migraine, and recurring pain.” Our clinical experience since 2007 continues to support this data.

Acupuncturists stimulate designated points on the body through the use of very thin, sterile needles inserted in the skin. E’VE ALL heard the p h r a s e “No pain, no gain.” We’ve been taught from a young age to push through the pain. I spent many years putting this advice into practice by ignoring the messages

The modalities that have served me most in my pursuit and education of health and wellness envelop the practice of allowing more time to be present and kind with your self, with others, and with life. By practicing and allowing yourself time to become quiet in your body and your mind, you

The foundational principle of yoga is Ahimsa, which can be translated into non-harm. This principle asks us to care for and nourish ourselves by being kind and loving to our body, mind, and spirit. Take time to find balance by practicing self-care. This may seem selfish at first, until we embrace the knowledge that our ability to be kind and loving to others is directly related to our ability to be kind and loving to our self. managing pain

Chiropractic care deals with source of pain

E

V E RY D AY millions of people experience pain and turn to pain-killing drugs and antiinflammatory medications for relief. Sometimes there can be a natural alternative that can be of benefit. Physical pain can be caused by a traumatic injury that damages tissues causing bruising, swelling, and inflammation, as well as stimulating the nerves that signal pain. It can also be caused by referred pain from distressed organs or emotional stress. Ice and elevation are still great for first aid to help reduce swelling and pain caused by physical trauma. Arnica Montana homeopathic remedy can be a handy first aid tool in the early stages of an injury to re-

20 www.esswellness.com

lieve pain caused by bruising or minor sprains or strains. (It should not be used by pregnant women or anyone on medication without consulting their physician). Essential Omega 3 fatty acids like those found in flax seed oil and salmon can also be helpful in relieving minor swelling and inflammation. Ginger and turmeric in strong enough dosages have also been found to give some relief from minor inflammation. STIMULATING ENERGY MERIDIANS HELPFUL TO PAIN REDUCTION

Most people think of chiropractic care as only for back and neck pain. But taking care of the musculoskeletal system has ripple effects on the nervous system, organs, and overall health of the body. While pain oftentimes seems localized, it can radiate from or be caused

by another issue going on in the body and ideally should be treated in the context of the whole system. Acupuncture and acupressure are helpful adjunct care modalities for this purpose. They help to stimulate the energy meridians that flow throughout the entire body. I recently attended a seminar by a chiropractor named Dr. Yuen who is proficient in Chinese Energetic Medicine. He has worked with many wellknown people like the late David Carradine and was a martial arts advisor on the original Kung Fu TV series. He authored a book called “The Power of Instant Healing.” Essentially, he teaches non-force methods of addressing pain using the body’s energy system and intrinsic biocomputer. Other chiropractors pursue an array of additional approaches for managing pain.

BY UNA FORDE

Remember that pain is like the warning light on your car’s dashboard that signals that something is wrong. Getting rid of the pain without also addressing the underlying cause of the pain would be like disconnecting the light on the dashboard and blithely continuing to drive your car. So listen to your body’s call for assistance and source the best remedy that provides relief from your pain. And also focus on identifying and addressing its underlying cause. Dr. Una Forde graduated from Northwestern College of Chiropractic in 1991, with additional certification in acupuncture. She also has training in Health Kinesiology and other alternative healing techniques. Her practice, Golden Sun Chiropractic Wellness Center, PLLC, is located at 7035 Wayzata Blvd. Suite 100. WARM BLACK BEAN DIP Me, Redone is a blog written

INGREDIENTS:

by Sara Tenenbein, where the

• 1 15 ounce can of black beans • 2 clove of garlic minced or grated • 1 shallot chopped finely • 1/2 jalapeno seeded and chopped

• 1 teaspoon of olive oil • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/4 cup of cilantro, minced • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice • 1 tomato, diced (optional) • 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable broth or water • salt and pepper to taste

Drain and rinse the beans and set aside. In a small skillet, heat up the olive oil and add the shallots, garlic, jalapeno, cumin, salt, and pepper and sauté for a few minutes or until the garlic is soft. Add the black beans and use a potato masher to mash them

to the desired consistency. Add vegetable broth and stir until the preferred thickness is achieved. Transfer the beans to a bowl and add the tomatoes, cilantro, and lime juice. Stir until combined, top with additional cilantro and tomato if desired, and serve.

theme is health, happiness and a touch of humor. In this column, Sara brings us her most popular healthy yet delicious recipes.

I

love healthy recipes that I can make out of simple things in my pantry and this black bean dip is no exception. I use this dip on healthy chips, in burrito bowls, and instead of refried beans in other Mexican dishes. It’s extremely simple to make and has always been a crowd pleaser in my home.
