HOLISTIC EDUCATION
BY KRIS NELSON
Twin Cities hosts nationally-recognized homeopath training program
T
HE NORTHWESTERN Academy of Homeopathy (NAH), one of the most highly recognized training programs for professional homeopaths in the country, is located right here in the Twin Cities. Operating since 1995, NAH has successfully graduated nearly 150 homeopaths. NAH makes homeopathic education accessible to working adults as the program is designed with a part-time schedule, allowing students to continue working while learning. The principles of homeopathy were first formulated at the end of the 18th century by Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician. He had given up the practice of medicine when he found the therapies of his time to be ineffective and harmful, and did not resume practice until he discovered in homeopathy a means to help people heal gently, rapidly, and reliably. Homeopathic treatment, like all truly natural therapies, seeks to stimulate the innate healing power of the individual so that all physiological systems function at their best. NAH is committed to training excellent homeopathic practitioners. Our four-year program meets monthly over a four-day weekend. The first two years of the program are primarily classroom study, focusing on philosophy and study of remedies. The philosophy of homeopathy
4 www.esswellness.com
is a deep subject; the level of mastery determines the ultimate quality of a homeopath. NAH provides twice as many hours in philosophy as any comparable school in the country. In the study of homeopathic remedies, the information available on the more than 3,500 remedies available to us is far more than any person can retain. Part of the training ensures that all students know how to use the materials available to us to continue to expand our understanding of remedies. NAH also incorporates a human science component into its program to enable non-medically trained students to practice safely and competently. Through a basic study of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and medical terminology, students learn what is needed to understand Western medicine, make referrals, and communicate with clients and medical practitioners alike. In the second two years, the students move into the Clinical component of the program. Clinical experience is of fundamental importance to the art of healing and can make a huge difference in the level of confidence a student brings into practice. NAH operates the Student Clinic, a low-cost clinic open to the public, which is staffed by students and supervised by faculty. The Student Clinic allows students to receive over 600 hours of clinical training in a progressively staged sequence. At
first, students watch instructors take live cases. As competency increases, students begin taking cases first in a student casetaking team with faculty supervision. Later, students start working more independently as a practitioner with the faculty functioning mainly as preceptors. Preparing a student for the clienthomeopath interaction demands more than what is learned in the classroom. The faceto-face exchange that occurs during “casetaking” relies completely on the homeopath’s ability to be present and open with the client. NAH addresses this important aspect with its Self Focus component. Students are guided in self exploration and personal discovery via journaling exercises and individual conferences with faculty. The personal benefits to the student of the Self Focus component reach far beyond the successful client-homeopath interaction. Northwestern Academy of Homeopathy starts a new class every two years. Applications are now being taken for the next class beginning in January 2011. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Kris Nelson, Program Director at kris@homeovista.org or visit our website at www.homeovista.org. If you are interested in being a client at our lower-cost student clinic, please call 763-7469242 for available times. Kris Nelson is a graduate of NAH.

Ruhka® Academy offers energy medicine program
E
NERGY HEALING science is now a cutting-edge integrative healthcare modality. Local hospitals such as Abbott Northwestern, Fairview, and Woodwinds include energy healing treatments as a routine part of a patient’s care. Students wanting education in this form of healing science need to search for the right school of energy medicine. There are many programs advertised in holistic publications with differing names and length of study. Potential students can come away feeling confused, or worse yet, misled. It is important for students to choose the program that will give them the skills, knowledge, and confidence to be a viable and respected practitioner in this competitive field. Many of the weekend workshops and seminar format programs offered in Minnesota and throughout the United States give students a reasonable first exposure to the experience of energy healing. But the true profession of energy healing science requires study that goes beyond these fundamental classes. It must blend academic rigor in both traditional and energy medicine theories. Rukha® Academy of Healing Arts and Science provides a comprehensive, licensed curriculum that truly educates individuals to be certified professional practitioners of energy science. Rukha’s founder and president, Shelli Kae Nelson, says, “As a medical professional, and clinical researcher in energy healing for the University of Minnesota, we know the significant value energy interventions have on health. Rukha’s program is credible and gives graduates cutting edge skills that will provide measurable, meaningful outcomes
to their clients. Our approach is one that the mainstream medical community can embrace as legitimate and, thus, welcome graduates into the scope of standard care.” Nelson created The Rukha Method taught exclusively at Rukha Academy There are several components that set The Rukha method apart from any other healing education. The key is that we teach anatomy theory with energy techniques and psychology. Practitioners must be skilled in the role that psychology plays in affecting the energy system and thus, healing. Without the integration of traditional anatomy, energetic anatomy, and psychology, interventions will be diluted. Students come to Rukha for differing reasons. Some come to begin their energy healing career. Others come who have taken other energy healing programs and are ready to deepen their skills. And yet others come simply for the amazing personal healing and growth that takes place throughout the program. The Rukha student need not have had any prior medical or psychology education or experience. Rukha is the only licensed school of healing in the Midwest. This two-year comprehensive curriculum is intended for individuals seeking a professional, legitimate program that certifies graduates in energy healing science. The faculty possesses advanced
degrees and experience in higher education. The curriculum is taught step-by-step for easy adoption. The schedule is designed for working adults. Classes meet from Friday through Tuesdays, five times yearly. Rukha class size is small. This allows frequent, direct contact with faculty for support and validation. Classes begin Friday, September 3, 2010. Rukha is offering $700 off of the 2010/2011 academic year’s tuition.
Visit Rukha Academy’s website and register soon to secure your discount and seat for this coming year. www. RukhaAcademy.com Shelli Kae Nelson is a Registered Nurse. Nelson holds a bachelors and advanced studies degree in energy healing from the Barbara Brennan School of healing science. She is the author of the first energy science research trial performed on post-operative surgical patients at the University of Minnesota, Fairview. Nelson has taught in the medical and healing community since 1989. She implemented energy treatments as a standard of care at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Nelson has a private healing practice, Healing Professionals, LLC.

Dear Grace Readers may submit questions to Janet Hovde for the “Dear Grace” column by emailing them to deargrace@janethovde. com. Questions/answers are printed as space allows. Although her advice is not meant to displace conventional healthcare knowledge and diagnosis, Hovde can offer a different slant, an intuitive perspective, regarding the “energy” of your healthcare issue. Please see a health practitioner for chronic health problems.
DEAR GRACE: I have been having major health problems for three and a half years now since the C-section births of my two sons. I have weakness, a non-stop tremor, and loss of dexterity in my left side only. I can no longer type, and I have trouble walking—and all forms of activity and exercise makes it worse. I am getting nowhere with Western medicine trying to figure out what it is, and I am going broke, and I am completely lost trying one Eastern medicine treatment after another to relieve the pain. What is wrong with me? And what can I do to get rid of this nightmare that is happening to my body?—Beatrice Dear Beatrice, From an energy perspective, there is a need to clear your energy field and to repair energy leaks. I am clearing clumps of energy from the area surrounding your body (like sweeping dust bunnies out from under the bed). As you read this, I invite you to take a big inhale and a long exhale, two or three times. I am now sealing three leaks, areas where you are vulnerable to losing energy and to accumulating energetic debris. The locations are at the left side of the back of your neck, at the back of your left shoulder blade, and at the back of your left sacrum area (low back). I am now strengthening an energy center deep in your abdomen. There is homework for you: Everyday invite the chakras on the bottom of your feet to open and imagine pouring your stress down into the Earth (which easily recycles this energy). Do this for two weeks and then report back to me about how you are doing?— Grace

thank you! Unfortunately, it didn’t help with my tremor. I’ve tried so many things in the past three and one-half years, I’m feeling like nothing will resolve this, and we are out of money trying to find help. Thank you. I appreciate your help.—Beatrice Dear Beatrice, Thank you for getting back to me. And good for you for your diligence with your homework! Now that you have cleared your energy field so regularly, it seems that you are in a better position to benefit from Western medicine again. My suggestion is that you consider going to the clinic that feels most in alignment with your way of healing. Good luck to you.—Grace NOTE TO READERS: People ask about ways to improve intuition. Because much of your intuitive information comes through your senses, a simple way to enhance intuition is to “feed the senses.” Savor a juicy peach or a strawberry or fresh blueberries. Follow your nose through a garden, or the woods, or a farmer’s market. Deepen your awareness of your body by noticing your heartbeat or the dantien, that “one point” in your belly. Notice the warm sun or a soft breeze on your skin. Visit a paint store to see if you have new favorite colors. Surround yourself with one of your new favorite colors. Have fun coming up with your own “feed your senses” plan! Janet Hovde, MA, OTL, CHTP, is celebrating the 12th year of her healing practice, with appointments available in Roseville, MN & Hudson, WI. She enjoys watching her clients learn to care for their energy system and access their own inner wisdom. See website for her classes and fiber art: www.janethovde.com. HOLISTIC EDUCATION
Career programs now offered in Integrative Health and Healing
T
HE FIELD of Integrative Health and Healing, rooted in ancient healing practices, has developed into a popular and valuable addition to mainstream medical practice. Integrative health, also called Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and holistic healthcare, is based on the belief that good health is achieved by focusing on the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. It centers on preventive measures and facilitates the use of self-healing procedures. With the aging of baby-boomers and the increase in chronic health conditions, many people have looked to holistic healthcare for answers. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health, 40 percent of adults polled reported using integrative therapies in 2007. Visits to CAM providers (629 million) actually exceeded visits to primary care physicians (386 million). And the market is expected to rise—124 percent for alternative physicians, 230 percent for acupuncturists, 100 percent for chiropractors, and 200 percent for naturopaths— versus only 16 percent for conventional physicians. As interest in holistic healthcare has expanded, credibility has grown as well. Numerous published research studies support the effectiveness of acupuncture, massage, yoga, meditation, hypnotherapy, guided imagery, chiropractic, Healing Touch, Qigong, Traditional Chinese Medicine, herbal medicine, and other practices. Many people have experienced improvements in personal health from

these methods as well—some even lifechanging. Administrators and healthcare workers in medical schools and hospitals have recognized the credibility and value of this growing field. All 18 hospitals on US News “America’s Best Hospitals” provide CAM of some type. According to NCCAM: • Almost 40 percent of hospitals surveyed by the American Hospital Association in a 2007 national poll offered at least one integrative therapy • Membership in the Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine has grown from 11 members in 2002 to 42 members in 2009 • Courses in Integrative Health were a requirement in 90 percent of medical schools in 2007-2008 (compared with 30 percent in 2001-2002) An increase in the market for holistic services means the market for practitioners has also increased, along with new career alternatives. To fulfill this need, credit and non-credit programs are offered through Anoka-Ramsey Community College in Coon Rapids. An A.S. in Integrative Health and Healing, one of few degrees in the field, is an option. Two new certificate programs are additional options: Holistic
