or the first time in procession history, the Essex Memorial Day Parade Committee has named an honorary grand marshal. Mario Marcoux, a longtime committee member and Essex Jct. Lions Club extraordinaire, died in late February at age 74. Honoring their “go-to guy” is committee members’ way of thanking him, member Ed Von Sitas said. “Besides being a friend, he was just a great guy,” Von Sitas added. Always the first to arrive for community service events, Marcoux was constantly ready to help, members said. “He was a Lion through and through,” committee member and fellow Lion, Betsy MaGee, said, noting Marcoux’s helpfulness, love for the community and giving personality. For his colleagues, it just seems right to honor him. Marcoux’s life partner and fiancé, Maggie Belval, said his commitment to the two organizations was strong, yet she wasn’t expecting the dedication. “I was kind of surprised,” she said. Friday night before the parade, set for Saturday, May 27, Belval and Marcoux’s family will accept a gift in his honor at Essex Jct.’s First Congregational Church. Attendees will make their way to Five Corners with lit candles to honor fallen military members. Come Saturday morning, floats and red, white and blue regalia will line the streets of Essex Jct. Traditionally, around two grand marshals are chosen to lead the mile-and-a-half long route.

Mario Marcoux This year, though, military members will kick off the procession after committee members give a speech dedicated to Marcoux, detailing his commitment to the people of Essex. Marcoux served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. Once he returned home, he trained as an electrician and worked for Fletcher Allen Healthcare and the former IBM in Essex Jct. His work in the community, however, is what his colleagues remember him for most. Lions members recall his hot chocolate-making at Essex Jct. Parks and Recreation events, flipping burgers for the Lions food booth at the Champlain Valley Fair and, most importantly, taking photographs. With a beaming passion for photography, Marcoux was the official photographer for both the Lions Club and the Memorial Day parade. While no one could recall just how many years Marcoux served

MEMORIAL DAY COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Celebrate all Military this May

M

emorial Day is celebrated each May to commemorate the people who died in service of the United States. Even though barbecues and visions of upcoming summer weather may command much of the attention come Memorial Day weekend, the holiday really serves as a remembrance for those military members who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as well as the personnel who continue to protect and serve today. Memorial Day origins Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and was borne out of the Civil War. On May 30, 1868, Gen. John Logan, a national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, decreed General Order No. 11, which designated the day for the “purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” May 30 was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. It took several years for the first state to recognize the holiday, which New York adopted in 1873. By 1890, all northern states recognized Decoration Day. When the holiday changed from commemorating those who died fighting the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war after World War I, the South began to recognize it as well.

Honoring the military Although Memorial Day pays homage to those who perished fighting for their country, it also is an opportunity to recognize the military members and their families who continue to work to ensure the freedom of Americans. The U.S. Armed Forces is renowned for its size and strength; various sources suggest there are between 1.4 and 1.6 million active service people. The military is comprised of the Army, Army National Guard, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard; each branch also has its own reserve. There are many ways to honor active, reserve and former veterans, as well as those who died in service of their country. Help Veterans of Foreign Wars distribute red poppies as a visual reminder of the military’s efforts. • Volunteer at a veterans’ hospital or visit a wounded veteran at home. • Offer financial, legal or career expertise through the Corporation for National & Community Service (serve.gov). • Help maintain the veteran area of a nearby cemetery. Place flags on all of the graves. • Befriend military families who frequently relocate, making a concerted effort to welcome them into your community. • Educate children about past wars and the services the military provides. • Visit a military museum or historic site. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time for one minute. • Post a message to the troops at the USO website (uso.org).

MEMORIAL DAY

“Today”

These poems were submitted by two Albert D. Lawton eighth-grade students. Thank you to Hannah and Sam for sharing their words.

Untitled By Hannah Gibbs It feels like my heart fell on the floor and a piece broke off Her piece She’s been gone for a week But it’s felt like a year I miss her I miss her and I feel like I’m never going to see her again I’m lonely My mom, my best friend, is gone I’ve been counting down the days Will she ever come back? I don’t know And that’s the scariest part It’s been eight, eight days counting today Eight days that I’ve peeked at the news I want to, but I’m afraid to see her name come across the screen I’m worried I’m worried about her safety I love my mom and I couldn’t bear to see her leave and not come back But she and I both live with that risk every day I can’t believe that she would leave me But I know she did it because she loves me Her love is not just for me, it’s for you, and everybody She wants to share her love with the world
