CITY INTERFACE

No single paradigm is dominant in the relation of the knowledge centers to their immediate urban fabric, instead three quite distinct and diverse models emerge from the case studies. Island oasis model CERN, Cambridge Science Park, ETH Science City, Karolinska Institutet, Paju Book City Gradation model Caltech, Stanford Research Park Integrated model Berkeley, Harvard Allston, Kista Science City

LANDSCAPE INTERFACE

Three Conditions : One is the integration of a composition of multiple and diverse open spaces that supports the social framework. Social/composition Berkeley, Caltech, Kista Science City, Stanford Research Park A second condition utilizes a central landscape element or open space that organizes the masterplan and gives it a unitary identity. Central/ecosystem Cambridge Science Park, Paju Book City, ETH Science City A third case is characterized by a powerful natural setting and topography towards which there is an attempt to subordinate the built environment. Natural setting Karolinska Institutet, Berkeley, CERN

INTERIOR SPACE

The critical issue is to manage the interaction between the flexible and the specific. The gradient of specificity, hence, becomes an architectural operation. Spaces can be clustered or be disconnected. They can operate on adjacency or proximity. They can also incorporate various gradients of openness or closure, thus be permanently or temporary subdivided to support team building and incubators.

JUNKSPACE

Koolhaas argues that Junkspace doesn’t “pretend to create perfection, only interest,” and that its “geometries are unimaginable, only makeable.” (Koolhaas, 2002) Junkspace is not an architectural space, hence. It is the space of unpredictability – the space of chance.
