FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Tiger Fans! When you’ve got “Unfinished Business” to attend to you can’t wait to get at it. Such is the case with these Tigers. The kernel of disappointment from missing the playoffs last season has developed in to a resolve that this season will be different. For that reason alone, this promises to be a strong year for the Tigers under Head Coach Bert West. When you add the veteran depth of the Tigers and the excellent group of newcomers, there are lots of reasons for strong expectations this year. Although the media guide gives facts and figures about the men who play and coach, we also hope that you’ll be able to see their hearts as they play the game. We hope you’ll notice their character as well as their competitive drive. And we hope that you know they are as committed to academic pursuits as they are to winning on the court. At East Texas Baptist University our student athletes are student athletes. These men are not playing for a scholarship, but for the love of the game. And, we play basketball because we believe it contributes to the educational mission of the University. These students are learning not just in the classrooms, but in team meetings, through diligent practice, by lifting weights and conditioning their bodies, in one-on-one conversations with coaches and fellow players, and on the court. As a University, we’re also committed to the truth found in Scripture that reminds us, “physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” 1 Timothy 4:3. This basketball team is being fit for success in this life and the life to come. That, to me, is a good reason to cheer them on. Go Tigers! Kent Reeves completed his 12th year as full-time athletic director at East Texas Baptist University in 2008-09. Since stepping down as the all-time winningest coach in Lady Tiger basketball in 1997 to become full-time AD, Reeves has guided ETBU’s transformation from NAIA and NCAA Division II status to full membership within NCAA Division III. Under his watch, the program has ballooned to 10 varsity sports from the five that existed when he became athletic director on June 1, 1997. “We’ve added football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and men’s cross country, and we’re looking to add men’s and women’s tennis,” says Reeves when looking back over his first decade as athletic director. “I’d say another one of hte real positive things I’m proud we’ve been able to accomplish is that we have also built some first-class athletic facilities as well as making nice upgrades to our existing facilities.” Reeves joined the ETBU coaching staff in 1987 as the head coach for women’s basketball. Taking over a program that was 10 years old at the time, Reeves quickly built an NAIA national title contender that averaged over 20 wins per season in his decade on the bench. In his 10 seasons as head women’s basketball coach, Reeves posted 206 wins and his teams won five Big State Conference championships and made nine postseason appearances. He stepped down following the 1996-97 season to become the university’s full-time athletic director while also taking on another challenge. As part of the university’s expansion of the athletic program, Reeves agreed to also become the head coach of a softball program that would begin play in the spring of 1998 as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference. His first recruiting class produced an eventual six All-Americans over the next four years, and Reeves piled up 83 wins in three full seasons as head softball coach. In his third season, in 2000, the Lady Tigers won the first American Southwest Conference championship in the history of ETBU athletics since the university had become a member of the ASC and Division III in 1998. Following that season, Reeves gave up coaching to focus on his athletic director duties. Football was added in the fall of 2000, along with men’s and cross country, giving ETBU 10 varsity athletic sports. When Reeves arrived at ETBU in 1987 as women’s basketball coach, only three programs -- men’s and women’s basketball, and baseball -- existed on campus. But in his first four years as athletic director, the university had added softball, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country and football. Reeves went back into coaching in 2004, when he had to step in and take over the softball program once more due to a mid-year coaching change. Taking over a senior-laden program that had won the ASC championship every year since he’d left, Reeves coached the Lady Tigers to a school-record 41 wins as well as helping ETBU attain its first-ever No. 1 national ranking in any sport. He also guided the Lady Tigers to a fifth straight conference championship that season. He immediately stepped down again following that season, but came back to take over the program for a third time in the summer of 2005. After coaching the softball team in 2006 and 2007, Reeves once again took off his coaching hat to assume athletic director-only duties. However, in his six total seasons in the dugout, Reeves compiled a 183-84-1 mark and is now the university’s all-time winningest coach in two different sports. Reeves is also very active in the Marshall community, serving vice president of the Marshall Lions Club as well as serving as a deacon at Central Baptist Church. In his time away from the office, he enjoys playing golf, fishing and working in his yard. Reeves received his Bachelor of Science in Education from John Brown University and also holds a Master of Science in Education from Arkansas State University. Kent and his wife, Mary Beth, have two daughters, Kendra and Taylor. Taylor is a sophomore at Baylor University, while Kendra is married to Austin Skipworth.

ATHLETICS FACILITIES

ORNELAS GYMNASIUM Beautiful and cozy as the home of ETBU’s indoor athletics programs, Ornelas Gymnasium is one of the top basketball/volleyball arenas in the American Southwest Conference. Ornelas Gymnasium, as a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, was built in 1995 and replaced Keys Gymnasium as the home to ETBU basketball. Although Keys still stands as an intramural facility, it is on the east end of the complex that now includes Ornelas Gym on the west side and Dean Healthplex in the middle. Ornelas Gym has bowl-stype seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes bleacher seats at floor level, reserved chairback in a mezzanine level and upper level general admission bleachers. ETBU students are allowed in the floor bleachers, typically across from the Tiger bench, to give the home fans a nice up-close view of the action. It also provides a nice homecourt advantage for the Tigers. Ornelas Gym has become a tough place to play for visiting teams in the American Southwest Conference. The Tigers went 8-6 in their home facility during the 2007-08 season, and those eight wins all came in conference play. ETBU won eight of its final 10 home contests of the year, including a six-game home winning streak at one point. During that stretch, the Tigers came up with wins against Mississippi

College, Texas-Tyler and Texas-Dallas, three teams that finished above them in the overall ASC East Division standings. Beginning with ETBU’s only ASC East Division championship in men’s basketball in 2002-03, the Tigers have gone a combined 47-27 at home in the last six seasons. That’s a winning percentage of .635 in the “House of Blues.” In five of those years, ETBU has won no fewer than eight home games at Ornelas Gym. In the summer of 2007, the gym floor received a facelift. ETBU’s trademark tigereyes logo was added to both baselines, and the floor was completely refinished with ETBU, ASC and NCAA logos added. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, Dean Healthplex was also constructed in 1995. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean, the healthplex opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym and houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters and both free and machine weightlifting stations. Dean Healthplex also has four racquetball courts. All healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students. The complex also includes offices for athletic director, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball coaches, as well as kinesiology faculty.

HEAD COACH Bert West

Head Coach, Tiger Basketball 903-923-2231 bwest@etbu.edu The Tigers’ 15th season under head coach Bert West was about as frustrating a year as any in the coach’s long career at both the collegiate and high school levels. With high hopes entering the season, coming off a promising year in 2007-08 that saw ETBU advance to the conference tournament with one of West’s youngest and most inexperienced teams, the Tigers got off to a slow start in conference play with a 3-5 record to start ASC action. But a set of talented newcomers that included all-conference picks Jacob Turnipseed, Dennis Jones and James Morman began to mesh with returners such as Josh Chambers and Jeremiah Pojah around mid-January, setting the stage for an ETBU surge in the standings. The Tigers opened ASC East action with road wins at Ozarks, Louisiana College and Mississippi College -- traditionally the toughest places to play for ETBU. By early February, the Tigers had pushed back into the playoff race and were closing in on what appeared to be a return trip to the postseason. But a 3-point loss at home in a rematch with Mississippi College, just after a tough loss on the road at Texas-Tyler, ultimately proved to be the finishing touches on ETBU’s frustration. The Tigers mauled nationally-ranked and eventual ASC champion Texas-Dallas and Ozarks in Ornelas Gym to close out the year, but were kept out of the postseason by one game in the standings. West believed that by the end of the season the Tigers had evolved into a team that could legitimately have pushed through and possibly won the conference championship tournament. Not getting into the dance, however, was a bitter pill to swallow. “It’s disappointing and a little hollow, to accomplish what we did over the final month and it not be enough to get in,” West said about the team’s fifth-place finish in the East – one excruciating game out of the postseason. “We knew we’d put ourselves in a very difficult position early and it just proved to be just enough to keep us out. But as far as my team goes, I couldn’t have asked any more from them than what they gave over the last month. I really think we went from being a dangerous team to a good team, and there’s a big difference. But it wasn’t good enough, and that’s what we’ve got to work with going forward.” The near-miss and the frustration at knowing what might have been is a feeling West hopes carries over into this season, when ETBU is set to return no fewer than four starters -- Chambers, Turnipseed, Morman and Jones, along with a deep bench that includes returning juniors Deba Egharevba along with promising sophomore Kendre’ Smith. West was most pleased with and gave credit for his team’s turnaround in fortunes in the second half of last season to its improvement on the defensive end of the floor. While acknowledging that “I’m an offensive-minded coach by nature,” West also said ETBU draws extreme pride in that, for the first time since becoming a member of the ASC in 1998-99, the Tigers led the league in field goal percentage defense. ETBU edged ASC East champion UT Dallas on the final day of the season to earn that honor, finishing with a .407 opponents’ shooting percentage in 20 games against conference-only opponents. “I’m an offensive-minded coach by nature, but our defensive performance this year is something I’m very pleased with and proud of,” he said. “Quite honestly defense is something I really worry about mostly when the game starts. (Assistant coach) Michael Prather deserves all the credit for coaching our defense and making it what it was by the end of the year.” ETBU’s defense on the court – in games against conference opponents – also was fourth-best in the league in points allowed per game (70.6) and sixth in three-point percentage

ETB defense (.324). West said the Tigers’ guards – notably, Jones, Turnipseed and senior guard Melvin Brewer – helped make ETBU a good defensive team on the perimeter with their quickness and hands, while Chambers’ presence inside made it extremely difficult for opponents to get to the basket. Offensively, West also gave credit to assistant coach Josh White for helping turn around the Tigers’ fortunes in mid-January. The Tigers’ scoring average over the final 11 games was just two points higher than the previous 14, but ETBU’s shooting percentage went from 43 percent before Jan. 17 to 46 after, and the team also improved its 3-point shooting from 26 percent in the first 14 outings to nearly 36 percent over the final 11. And late in the year, the Tigers gave West his 200th career coaching victory at the collegiate level, something that will always make this particular team special for the head coach. West finished the season with 202 career collegiate wins, with 190 of those coming at ETBU. He should pass 200 wins at ETBU sometime during the 2009-10 season. “I like where our program is right now,” West said. “Over the last two years our assistants have brought in some key players who have helped us get close to the level we want to be at every year. We need to continue that trend in recruiting.” West has become as synonymous with ETBU basketball as the Tiger mascot itself. A graduate of then-East Texas Baptist College and native of Arkansas, West coached the Tigers from 1991-1997 before leaving for three years to coach at Southern Arkansas University (1997-98) and as Marshall High School girls basketball coach (1998-2000). He returned to his alma mater in June of 2000 and has since coached the Tigers to an American Southwest Conference East Division championship in 2002-03 and to four ASC tournament appearances in his nine seasons back on the ETBU bench. West graduated from East Texas Baptist College in 1972 after playing on the Tiger basketball team himself under Coach R. C. Kennedy. After a highly successful high school career that saw him win four consecutive state championships at Zwolle, La., West came back to Marshall and ETBU in 1991 to take over the men’s basketball program from retiring coach and all-time wins leader Jim Webb. The return was miserable at first. West’s first two Tiger teams won just 11 games combined the first two seasons before breaking through with a 17-15 season in 1993-94. That season kicked off a four-year run of winning records for the Tigers, including a school-record 28-5 season in 1995-96. Prior to that season, in 1994-95, the Tigers finished as the highest-scoring team in the NAIA nationally, averaging 102.8 points per game. Following his sixth season in 1996-97, West accepted the head coaching position at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Ark. After spending one season as the Muleriders’ head coach, West returning to East Texas and began a two-year stint as head girls basketball coach at Marshall High School. His return to ETBU beginning in 2000-01 started off slowly again, as the Tigers struggled to a 7-18 mark in West’s first season back. After a 12-12 mark in 2001-02, West coached his best NCAA Division III team to date with a 17-9 mark that included the ASC East Division title. The Tigers’ ninth loss of the year, however, came in the semifinals of the ASC Tournament, which ETBU hosted as East Division champions that year. After a 12-13 finish in 2003-04, West’s Tigers returned to the ASC Tournament in 2004-05. A year later, in 2005-06, ETBU finished 14-12 with a second straight second-place finish in the ASC East Division. West’s coaching at Zwolle, La., created records that may never fall in Louisiana high school basketball. Zwolle won four straight Louisiana state championships with West as head coach, a streak that included a 50-game winning streak. Entering his 16th season at ETBU in 2008-09, West stands second all-time in Tiger coaching wins with 190. That leaves him behind only Jim Webb, who tops the list with 219 coaching victories. Bert and his wife, Diana, have two grown children, Amy and Brody. They also have four grandchildren: Caleb, Peyton, Sydney and Presley.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE

ETBU

Defending champions UT Dallas, UMHB picked as preseason division favorites RICHARDSON, Texas –– The University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball teams have been predicted to win the American Southwest Conference East and West Division titles, respectively, after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the conference office announced on Tuesday (Oct. 20). LeTourneau University’s Dale Vanwright and Concordia University Texas’ Brad Walker earned 2009-10 preseason player of the year honors. Texas-Dallas, which went 26-5 overall and 16-4 in league play last season on its way to the ASC title and an appearance in the “Elite Eight” of the NCAA Division III Championship, totaled 133 points and picked up 13 of the possible 21 first-place votes in the annual poll. Head coach Terry Butterfield’s Comets have won two of the last five conference titles. Their run in the NCAA tournament last season tied for the longest by any ASC team in league history. UTD fell in overtime to Guildford (N.C.), narrowly missing a berth into the “Final Four.” Six-time ASC champion Mississippi College (20-7, 14-6 ASC) was picked to finish second in the West, totaling 125 points and seven top-spot votes. The Choctaws reached the conference title game last season. LeTourneau (16-10, 14-6 ASC) garnered 99 points and the final first-place vote to land in the third-place spot. The University of Texas at Tyler totaled 84 points to round out what would be the East Division’s four teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament. East Texas Baptist University (82 pts.) was predicted to finish fifth, followed by the University of the Ozarks (37 pts.) and Louisiana College (28 pts.). Mary Hardin-Baylor (19-8, 16-5 ASC), which won the 2008 ASC title and advanced to the NCAA tournament in 2007 and 2008, totaled 169 points and earned 10 of the possible 24 first-place votes. Head coach Ken DeWeese’s Cru reached the semifinals of the ASC tournament last year and won at least 17 games for the sixth straight season.

Defending West Division champion McMurry University (19-8, 17-4 ASC) was predicted for a second-place finish with 166 points – just three behind UMHB – and nine top-spot votes. McMurry won the ASC crown 1997, 2000 and 2001. Concordia Texas (10-16, 9-12 ASC) received 154 points and four first-place votes to land in the third position. Hardin-Simmons University (9-16, 8-13 ASC) totaled 103 points to round out what would be the division’s four league tournament qualifiers. Sul Ross State University (87 pts.) was picked fifth, followed by Howard Payne University (82 pts.), Schreiner University (53 pts.) and Texas Lutheran University (51 pts.). Schreiner picked up the final first-place vote. LeTourneau’s Vanwright (Houston, TX / Blinn JC), a senior guard, averaged 15.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season.
