EMBRACING FAITH.

Our faith affects, well, everything. It changes the way you think about your life and about the world around you. As ETBU students are encouraged and equipped to grow spiritually, they flourish in every other way. We want to encourage a deeper faith in Christ in our students. That means we want them to be inspired to believe and grow, not just told what to believe. We want them to experience real change, not just follow a list of rules. We’ve found that real growth and life happen best in a true community. The ETBU campus is just that -- a close-knit group of students, faculty and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds. It’s more common for them to refer to ETBU as “home” than as “school.” That difference -- both formed by a common faith and encouraging a deeper faith -- matters.

ENGAGING MINDS.

College exists to educate you. But what does that mean? Does it mean you leave with a brain full of information? With skills for a better job? With a diploma to hang on the wall? All of that is part of it. We just believe there is more to education. We believe you attend college not only to educate your mind, but also to engage it. And we believe you should leave college not only with the tools for a career, but also with wisdom for life. That starts, of course, with an exceptional classroom experience. At ETBU, degreed faculty -- experts in their fields -- teach our classes. You interact with professors and classmates as you learn, and classes are small enough to allow for a true interactive learning experience.

EMPOWERING LEADERS.

The shared goal of everyone at ETBU is this: when you leave us, you leave not merely with a degree, but with a purpose. That purpose is different for everyone, but the common theme is that our students are prepared to be light to the world wherever they go, whatever they do. And that’s why we believe that college is about all of you, not just your brain. It’s about growing in the ways you want to grow -- and in the ways you can’t imagine growing. It’s about experiencing community and expanding your mind. It’s about becoming who God created you to be for the rest of your life. That only happens in a place where everyone is completely invested in that kind of campus -- where faculty and staff really know their students and pour into their lives, both in and out of the classroom -- where students’ passions aren’t replaced with information, but empowered by what they learn and how they learn it.

ETBU IS THAT KIND OF PLACE. We aren’t bragging. We’ve just been blessed with a group of people who believe where you go to college matters as much as whether you go to college. But don’t take our word for it. A place like that is better experienced than described. COME SEE FOR YOURSELF.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to East Texas Baptist University! This is an excellent University for students who are interested in the best in learning, living and faith. One of the advantages of the American system of higher education is the great diversity of institutions, and ETBU is one of only a few remaining distinctly Christian universities. At ETBU, we believe that all truth is God’s truth so we study and learn from a Christian worldview. Most colleges and universities in our nation today separate faith and learning. We integrate them. And, while we accept students of all faiths and no faith, we are unapologetically committed to fulfilling God’s call for us as an institution under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you or someone you know would flourish in a university setting characterized by close community, meaningful interaction, excellent teaching, robust student life, and a desire not just to earn a degree but to also fulfill God’s purpose for his or her life, explore our website (www.etbu.edu) and then come to campus and experience for yourself why we are so excited about East Texas Baptist University. Go Tigers!

BERT WEST HEAD COACH

today. “I’ve absolutely loved playing for him, even through the rough moments,” said senior post Josh Chambers, who scored 14 points in the record-breaking win. “He’s taught me so much about just being a person, a leader and a player. He’s a great person and his personality is one like no other. I’m going to miss playing for him when my career is over.” “Coach West has taught me a lot since I’ve been here,” said 20102011 se-

East Texas Baptist University men’s basketball coach Bert West doesn’t hesitate when asked the following question: was it tougher getting his first win with the Tigers, or the one that made him the all-time winningest coach in program history? “By far, the toughest was the first,” says West, who set the new coaching wins mark (220) in his 17th season at his alma mater on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, with a 65-64 win at Houston Baptist. “Back then, in my first year as a college coach, by the time I got the first one I’d come to think I’d never get one. This last one, I had almost forgotten all about (the record), I just was concentrating on getting our team back on track. But no question about it, the first one was the one that stands out for me.” That first win came back on Jan. 7, 1992, and snapped a 0-15 start to his tenure at ETBU. The win came against Park College at ETBU’s Keys Gymnasium. Michael Landers was a guard on West’s first team at ETBU, and remembers exactly how difficult it was for the new coach to get his first victory. “He used to tell me our teams were so bad at that time, I was his best player…and that was not a good thing,” remembers Landers, who graduated from ETBU and coached the Tiger women’s basketball program for three years before moving on to what has been a very successful coaching career in the junior college ranks at Trinity Valley Community College. “We struggled to say the least, but he demonstrated one of the greatest traits a coach could have during those difficult seasons. He taught me and my teammates lessons in life that I still refer back to today.” Life lessons are what West ultimately seeks to share with his players. Wins and losses are so fragile, such a difficult thing to control, that the Tigers’ coach is always trying to coach his players into being something else rather than just being successful on the basketball court. “I’ve learned over the course of my career, that being a basketball coach isn’t all about just coaching basketball,” West says. “I take as much pride in one of my former players being successful years later as I do in one of my current ones having success on the court.” West finally passed his good friend and predecessor Dr. Jim Webb, who had held the previous record at 219 since retiring from coaching following the 1990-91 season, with a last-second win at Houston Baptist. It was an ironic twist to a bubbling little saga within the 2010-2011 basketball season – the Tigers entered the rare late-season, non-conference game at HBU having lost three straight games by a combined seven points since tying the coaching record. And when it came, it came against an old bitter rival of West and the Tigers from when he started at ETBU, when the university was still part Bert West accepts a commemorative basketball from former Tigers coach and friend of the NAIA’s Big State Conference. nior Deba Egharevba. “But the most important thing I’ve learned here is how to play and live like a man. I will never forget that.” Senior point guard Jacob Turnipseed also was happy to have been a part of handing the record-breaking victory to West. “It’s like playing for my best friend,” Turnipseed said. The coaching record was a mark West doesn’t like to acknowledge, a true indication that he’s as knowledgeable about the history of ETBU men’s basketball as anyone on the planet. West played for the Tigers – then of East Texas Baptist College – from 1969-1972, as a member of the squads coached by Tigers Hall of Fame coach R. C. Kennedy. “Man, the great coaches I’ve known here…Jim Webb, Coach (R.C.) Kennedy, those are true coaching giants in my eyes,” West says. “I always said I never wanted to pass Coach Kennedy because I had too much respect for him and I’m nowhere near the basketball coach he was. And I for sure was certain I’d quit before matching Webb, who is as good a friend to me as I’ve ever known in this business. Just overall, the experience I’ve had here at ETBU is one of the most enjoyable of my life. Basketball was just the avenue for me.” The relationships built over the course of those 17 years are what makes West the coach and colleague he is. This is noticed by those who have both played for and coached under him at ETBU. “Working with Coach West is an experience that will prepare anyone for success in any area of life,” says Michael Prather, who has been West’s assistant coach at ETBU the last seven years. “Coach West’s major emphasis when dealing with our team is not to treat them all the same, but to give them the type of treatment they need to be successful. This means that we give the last person on the bench the best coaching that we have until the last day of his career. And this is why he maintains a relationship with so many of his former players.” “Bert is the type of person you can trust,” says Lisa Curliss-Taylor, who coached the Lady Tigers from 2003-07 and is now the head coach at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. “He exudes confidence and always thinks of others. I enjoyed my time at ETBU, largely due to Bert.” West’s first team at ETBU finished with a 5-24 mark, a far cry from the high school ranks he’d come from where he won four straight Louisiana state championships at Zwolle High School. He coached the Tigers from 1991 through 1997, then accepted the head coaching position at Southern Arkansas University. After a one-year stint in Magnolia, Ark., with the Muleriders, West returned to Marshall and was head coach of the Marshall High School girls basketball program through 1999-2000. His successor at ETBU, Leland Hand, left the Tigers after a three-year run as coach from 1997-2000. West was offered the position again, and he’s been calling the shots on the ETBU bench ever since. Since coming back, the Tigers have earned six trips to the ASC postseason tournament, including one ASC East title during the 2002-03 season. West’s 2010-2011 team finished with a second-place finish in the ASC East Division and tied for the most wins -- 17 -- in a single season since ETBU joined the ranks of NCAA Division III back in 1998. West left his home state of Arkansas to attend ETBC and play for Tigers Hall of Fame coach R. C. Kennedy in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He received his bachelor’s degree from ETBC in 1972. He coached at various schools throughout Texas and Arkansas before settling in for one of the most dominant runs of any era at Zwolle, La., High School in the 1980s. Blessed with basketball tradition at Zwolle and also being in the right place at the right time, the Hawks reeled off a four-year run that saw them win four state championships and win 50 games in a row at one point. Included on some of the best teams in Zwolle during that period was Tony Cutright, who would play for West again at ETBU in the mid-1990s and then return as an assistant coach with the Tigers before eventually being inducted into ETBU’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Webb retired as coach at ETBU in 1990, taking the all-time wins record with him at 219. West returned to his alma mater to take a crack at the college ranks, and outside of a two-year stint as girls head coach at Marshall High School in 1998-2000, has been a collegiate head coach ever since.

West’s first run with the Tigers included a 1994-95 squad that led the NAIA in scoring with 102.8 points per game, and a 1995-96 team that finished 28-5. Since returning to the program, West’s teams have advanced to five ASC conference tournaments and have one division championship, the 2002-03 ASC East title. “I have so many people to thank over the course of 17 years, or even farther back even,” said West. “I’d like to thank (the late) Dr. Robert Craig for originally hiring me at ETBU, and Dr. Bob Riley for then re-hiring me. I appreciate the support we’ve received from Dr. Dub Oliver. And Kent Reeves – for his support and friendship as our athletic director. “A coach can’t win a game, of course, without great players, and great assistant coaches. Every one of them over the 17 years here worked hard for me and did the work needed for us to be successful. I am thankful for each and every one of these young men who have helped us get to this point. “And finally, the biggest thanks goes to my wife, Diana. She’s the greatest assistant coach I’ve ever had. If it weren’t for her I would’ve already quit a hundred times, but her support and counsel throughout the years has been sustaining for me.” Bert and Diana have two children. Their daughter, Amy, is married to Gary Fuller, and son Brody is a police officer in the Marshall Police Department and former Tiger basketball player himself. They have four grandchildren -- Caleb, Peyton, Sydney and Presley, and the Wests are members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall. Coach West is also an avid motorcyclist and spends a great deal of his time away from the court riding his Harley.

ETBU ATHLETICS KENT REEVES

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

B.S.E., John Brown University M.S.E., Arkansas State University

Phone: 903-923-2226 E-Mail: klreeves@etbu.edu

Now in his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a student at Baylor University.

ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT The East Texas Baptist University Intercollegiate Athletics Program functions as an integral part of the total education experience. The Intercollegiate Athletics Program emphasizes academics as the highest priority in the life of student-athletes. Recognizing that students have needs and interests which go beyond the scope of academic life, the University is committed to providing an Intercollegiate Athletics Program consistent with those needs and interests. Recognizing the positive impact of athletics participation on student development, as articulated in the University’s Mission Statement, the Athletics Program seeks to develop wellness, leadership and Christian character. Intercollegiate Athletics strives to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among the student-athlete and athletics staff. Through competition, the Intercollegaite Athletics Program provides the means for those involved to come to develop as individuals as well as a vital part of a team. This allows the student-athlete to grow physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and intellectually. During the process, the University is vigilant in monitoring the overall health and well-being of its student-athletes. East Texas Baptist University adheres to the principles of fair play and amateur athletic competition as defined by NCAA Division III legislation. The University also holds its coaches, administrators and student-athletes to the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

ETBU ATHLETICS ATHLETICS FACILITIES

ORNELAS STADIUM

| FOOTBALL

ORNELAS GYMNASIUM Ornelas Gymnasium, a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, was built in 1995 and replaced Keys Gymnasium as the home to ETBU volleyball and basketball. Although Keys still stands as an intramural facility, it is on the east end of the complex that now includes Ornelas Gym on the west side and Dean Healthplex in the middle. Ornelas Gym has bowl-stype seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes bleacher seats at floor level, reserved chairback in a mezzanine level and upper level general admission bleachers. ETBU students are allowed in the floor bleachers, typically across from the Tiger bench, to give the home fans a nice up-close view of the action. It also provides a nice homecourt advantage for the Tigers. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, Dean Healthplex was also constructed in 1995. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean, the healthplex opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym and houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters, free and machine weightlifting stations, and four racquetball courts. All healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students. The complex also includes offices for athletic director, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball coaches.
