EMBRACING FAITH.
Our faith affects, well, everything. It changes the way you think about your life and about the world around you. As ETBU students are encouraged and equipped to grow spiritually, they flourish in every other way. We want to encourage a deeper faith in Christ in our students. That means we want them to be inspired to believe and grow, not just told what to believe. We want them to experience real change, not just follow a list of rules. We’ve found that real growth and life happen best in a true community. The ETBU campus is just that -- a close-knit group of students, faculty and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds. It’s more common for them to refer to ETBU as “home” than as “school.” That difference -- both formed by a common faith and encouraging a deeper faith -- matters.
ENGAGING MINDS.
College exists to educate you. But what does that mean? Does it mean you leave with a brain full of information? With skills for a better job? With a diploma to hang on the wall? All of that is part of it. We just believe there is more to education. We believe you attend college not only to educate your mind, but also to engage it. And we believe you should leave college not only with the tools for a career, but also with wisdom for life. That starts, of course, with an exceptional classroom experience. At ETBU, degreed faculty -- experts in their fields -- teach our classes. You interact with professors and classmates as you learn, and classes are small enough to allow for a true interactive learning experience.
EMPOWERING LEADERS.
The shared goal of everyone at ETBU is this: when you leave us, you leave not merely with a degree, but with a purpose. That purpose is different for everyone, but the common theme is that our students are prepared to be light to the world wherever they go, whatever they do. And that’s why we believe that college is about all of you, not just your brain. It’s about growing in the ways you want to grow -- and in the ways you can’t imagine growing. It’s about experiencing community and expanding your mind. It’s about becoming who God created you to be for the rest of your life. That only happens in a place where everyone is completely invested in that kind of campus -- where faculty and staff really know their students and pour into their lives, both in and out of the classroom -- where students’ passions aren’t replaced with information, but empowered by what they learn and how they learn it.
ETBU IS THAT KIND OF PLACE. We aren’t bragging. We’ve just been blessed with a group of people who believe where you go to college matters as much as whether you go to college. But don’t take our word for it. A place like that is better experienced than described. COME SEE FOR YOURSELF.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to East Texas Baptist University! This is an excellent University for students who are interested in the best in learning, living and faith. One of the advantages of the American system of higher education is the great diversity of institutions, and ETBU is one of only a few remaining distinctly Christian universities. At ETBU, we believe that all truth is God’s truth so we study and learn from a Christian worldview. Most colleges and universities in our nation today separate faith and learning. We integrate them. And, while we accept students of all faiths and no faith, we are unapologetically committed to fulfilling God’s call for us as an institution under the banner of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you or someone you know would flourish in a university setting characterized by close community, meaningful interaction, excellent teaching, robust student life, and a desire not just to earn a degree but to also fulfill God’s purpose for his or her life, explore our website (www.etbu.edu) and then come to campus and experience for yourself why we are so excited about East Texas Baptist University. Go Tigers!

JANAE SCHLABSSHIRLEY HEAD COACH
Alma Mater: East Texas Baptist University
Phone: 903-923-2240 E-Mail: jshirley@etbu.edu
Former Tiger outfielder Janae SchlabsShirley has made quite an impact as head coach of her alma mater’s softball program in just four seasons. Consider this: when Shirley became the fourth head coach in the program’s history immediately following the 2007 season, after two years as an assistant coach, ETBU was no longer considered a perennial title contender in the American Southwest Conference. The Tigers were still finding a way to qualify for the annual conference tournament, something that has never eluded an ETBU team in any year of eligibility, but beyond that other programs in the league had taken up the ASC softball banner on a national level. But Shirley -- the team’s starting left fielder in 2004 and 2005 -- remembered a time when the Tigers were the beasts of the conference. During its run of five straight conference championships from 2000-04, ETBU was the only team to make an NCAA regional tournament appearance (three, from 2002-04). The Tigers had more All-Americans during this span than any other ASC schools combined. It was those memories -- and simple pride in the program as a former player -- that has driven Shirley as coach of the Tigers. From the get-go, she has focused on recruiting good fits for the program and upgrading the team’s overall talent level. And, with lightning speed -- again, in just four years -- Shirley has led another elevation of the Tiger softball program to national recognition. Things started a bit slowly, in 2008, her first season. The Tigers won their first nine games that year and returned to the NFCA national rankings for the first time since the opening of the 2005 season. But by the end of the year ETBU had once again qualified for the ASC Tournament as the No. 3 seed from the East Division, but the Tigers were bounced from the championship tournament in three games. Entering 2009, the Tigers were armed with Shirley’s first full recruiting class as head coach. The results were almost instant -- ETBU shocked the conference as an upset winner of the ASC East Division in the regular season, ascending to as high as No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time since 2004. The Tigers were again knocked out of the conference tournament prematurely but had impressed enough to earn the right to host the 2009 West Regional for the first time. ETBU then finished third at the regional, suffering a dramatic 2-1, walkoff loss to Linfield in the final game of the season. ETBU began the 2010 season as the No. 2 team in the nation but the Tigers struggled at times. Entering the final day of the regular season, ETBU needed a win over rival Louisiana College and some help elsewhere around the conference to clinch a conference tournament berth. The Tigers got in, but just barely, and were again denied a shot at the conference title by going just 2-2 at the postseason tournament. There were no guarantees for a return trip to the NCAAs, and the Tigers anxiously waited for two weeks before being awarded an at-large bid to the regional in Pineville, La., where ETBU hadn’t won a game since the 2004 season -- a streak of 12 straight losses. The Tigers squeaked by Mississippi College in the regional opener and then were upset by second-year program Southwestern, making its first NCAA appearance, in the second round. ETBU then had to hold off rival UT Tyler in a late elimination game on day two of the tournament, winning in walk-off fashion after a late Tyler rally had tied the game in regulation. That win sparked a magical run, however, by the Tigers. ETBU put together four straight wins -- including two over Louisiana College, snapping that 12-game losing streak -- to win its first ever regional
championship and berth in the World Series in Eau Claire, Wisc. At the nationals, the Tigers then went 4-0 -- including three wins after trailing in the fifth inning -- and won the program’s first national championship with a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the seventh that capped a two-run rally. That capped Shirley’s first three years -- not a bad rebuilding job. In 2011, with the pressure of playing as defending national champions, a young ETBU team with just one senior in its starting lineup, three regular freshmen starters and a revamped pitching staff, managed to once again win the ASC East Division for the second time in three years. The Tigers then overcame an early loss in the ASC Tournament with three straight wins on the final day to earn the program’s first ASC title in seven years,

and sixth overall. As far as championship banners go, it was the final skin on the wall for Shirley’s Tigers, who have now won a national championship, a conference championship, two ASC East titles, and made three straight NCAA playoff appearances in just four seasons. Coach Shirley and her staff were named the NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year following the national title run in 2010. This past season, the staff was also voted the ASC East Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in three seasons. Through four seasons as head coach, Shirley has posted a 141-45 record, a winning percentage of .758. Her 100th coaching victory came in the first elimination game of the 2010 regional at Pineville, La., when the Tigers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to steal a 3-2 victory over rival Louisiana College and send ETBU to its first regional championship game. Over the last three seasons, however, Shirley’s teams have gone 115-30, a winning percentage of a whopping .793. During her playing career, the Tigers made two straight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 2003-04. The program also won the final two of its five straight ASC championships. Shirley earned All-ASC East honors as a senior in 2005, her second year as a starter. She endured an injuryfilled first season at ETBU after transferring from Midland College but returned in 2004 to take over the starting job in left field, hitting .290 in 39 games. She also committed just one error. Her senior season in ‘05 saw her post a perfect record defensively, with no errors in 42 chances. A native of Hereford, Texas, Janae is the daughter of Ray and Charla Schlabs. She received a B.S.E. in Biology from ETBU in May of 2005 after received an associate’s degree from Midland College in 2002. Janae played volleyball, basketball, softball and also ran track at Hereford High School, where she graduated in 2000. At Midland College, she played on a squad that finished fourth at the NJCAA national tournament. Janae and her husband, Guy, were married in the summer of 2007. Guy is a former ETBU baseball player who also works on staff as assistant softball coach. Janae and Guy welcomed their first child, son Carter, in October of 2009.

THE SHIRLEY FAMILY Guy, Carter and Janae
Guy Shirley is the husband of ETBU head coach Janae Shirley and has worked on staff since the 2008 season. A native of Marshall, Texas, Guy played college baseball as a pitcher at LSU-Shreveport before transferring to ETBU to play one season in 2001. At Marshall High School, he was an all-district selection and was selected to play in the East Texas All-Star game following a senior season under coach Jackie Lloyd that saw the Mavericks go 30-9 and finish in the Class 5A regional quarterfinals. Shirley also played in the 2000 Stan Musial World Series as a member of the Ark-La-Tex Indians. Guy is the son of C.R. Shirley and Laura Harrington. He has one brother and sister-and-law, Chuck and Marti Shirley, and also has two nieces, Madeline and Maci. He and Janae were married in the summer of 2007, and they welcomed their first child, son Carter, in October of 2009.
BILL GALLOWAY ASSISTANT COACH
Alma Mater: Indiana University
Phone: 903-923-2240 E-Mail: wgalloway@etbu.edu
It is a comfortable feeling for ETBU head softball coach Janae Shirley during a game when she knows at any time she can lean on the knowledge and experience of a coaching Hall of Famer who has over 900 Division I head coaching victories on his resume. The Tigers are certainly fortunate to have Bill Galloway on staff for that very reason. Shortly after retiring following a 20-year run as head coach at Louisiana Tech, Coach Galloway joined the ETBU staff in 2003 as a part-time assistant coach. He continued to work with the program’s pitchers and in general off and on through the 2007 season. When that season ended, Shirley was named head coach. Her first move was to promote Galloway to a full-time top assistant coach on staff. “Coach Galloway offers so much to me as a coach and to our program as a whole,” Shirley says. “The experience and knowledge that he brings to our staff is priceless. He has a deep knowledge of pitching and also has a wealth of contacts all over the country that are a tremendous asset in our recruiting efforts. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and learn from a coach with such experience, and one that I respect so much.” Coach Galloway was inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame in 2001 and spent 20 years as head softball coach at Louisiana Tech. He joined the Lady Tiger staff as a part-time pitching coach in 2003 and 2004, then rejoined the program on a part-time basis in 2006. Galloway has a wealth of fast-pitch coaching experience at the Division I level following stints as head coach at Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M. He has a 934-421 record (.689 winning percentage) at D-I, and his Louisiana Tech teams posted at least 30 wins in a season 16 times. That includes a 52-18 mark in his first season in Ruston in 1982. The Lady Techsters made seven straight trips to the NCAA postseason under Galloway from 1983-89, including a fifth-place finish in the 1983 World Series. Overall, Tech finished with eight playoff appearances under Galloway. In his career, Galloway had 11 players selected as All-American and has 10 former players currently working as head coaches at the collegiate level. He has coached 44 Regional All-Americans, and his players’ graduation rate ranks in the top 20 percent of NCAA schools. In just his second season on staff at ETBU as part-time pitching coach in 2004, the Lady Tigers went 41-5 and finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation in NCAA Division III. The ETBU staff that season, with Galloway serving as pitching coach, posted a 1.34 ERA and had four players -- Mandie McConnell, Kristen Abernathy, Ashley Stout and Carrie Mills -- finish with at least seven wins. The staff also held opponents to a .213 batting average in 46 games. Over the last two years, Galloway has coached a pitching staff that led ETBU to 115 victories. A 1978 graduate of Indiana University, Galloway holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Russian-Soviet Studies. He has also served in the United States Army. Coach Galloway and his wife, Liguya, moved to Marshall from Ruston, La., in 2007.

ETBU ATHLETICS KENT REEVES
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
B.S.E., John Brown University M.S.E., Arkansas State University
Phone: 903-923-2226 E-Mail: klreeves@etbu.edu
Now in his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a student at Baylor University.

ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT The East Texas Baptist University Intercollegiate Athletics Program functions as an integral part of the total education experience. The Intercollegiate Athletics Program emphasizes academics as the highest priority in the life of student-athletes. Recognizing that students have needs and interests which go beyond the scope of academic life, the University is committed to providing an Intercollegiate Athletics Program consistent with those needs and interests. Recognizing the positive impact of athletics participation on student development, as articulated in the University’s Mission Statement, the Athletics Program seeks to develop wellness, leadership and Christian character. Intercollegiate Athletics strives to establish and maintain an environment that values cultural diversity and gender equity among the student-athlete and athletics staff. Through competition, the Intercollegiate Athletics Program provides the means for those involved to come to develop as individuals as well as a vital part of a team. This allows the student-athlete to grow physically, emotionally, socially, spiritually and intellectually. During the process, the University is vigilant in monitoring the overall health and well-being of its student-athletes. East Texas Baptist University adheres to the principles of fair play and amateur athletic competition as defined by NCAA Division III legislation. The University also holds its coaches, administrators and student-athletes to the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct.
ETBU ATHLETICS TAYLOR FIELD
Taylor Field serves as the home for the 2011 American Southwest Conference champion and 2010 NCAA Division III national championship ETBU softball program. The facility has received several upgrades and facelifts since its original construction prior to the 1998 season, when ETBU fielded its first fastpitch program as a member of the Heart of Texas Conference and then moving to the American Southwest Conference a year later. There were several noticeable changes at Taylor Field in 2011, other than the national championship banner that will forever hang on the fence as a reminder of the title run the Tigers generated in the spring of 2010. ETBU moved its home dugout to the first base side, to have the Tigers on the same side of the field as a brand new covered batting cage that was constructed outside the right-field foul line. A new Tiger bullpen was also added along the first base side. Visiting teams now use the third-base dugout, which had been the Tigers’ side of the field since the program’s inception in 1998. A section of the right field fence was remodeled in 2011 as a new home run porch added just to the fair side of the foul pole. “The Tiger Den” is a special place for fans to gather and enjoy the game from a different perspective. A wooden deck sits just above the shortened fence and holds chairs and picnic tables for fans on game day. New lights were added to the facility prior to the 2009 season. Prior to that, ETBU renovated the Taylor Field press box behind home plate in 2005 into a two-story brick structure with new climate-controlled press area on the second floor. A Tiger locker room and fan restroom comprises the first floor of the press box.
The facility hosted the 2009 NCAA West Regional, as ETBU hosted seven of the top teams in the nation from Texas, Louisiana, California and Oregon. Taylor Field opened in 1998 along with the new softball program at ETBU. The original gift for the facility was provided by Earl and Louise Taylor. Distances to the foul poles are 190 feet from home plate, with distance to center field registering at 210. Both power alleys top out at 215 feet.
