ETBU’s on-campus wireless internet network, TigerNet, is available free of charge to media in attendance at Woods Field.
David Weaver is in his 12th year as Sports Information Director at East Texas Baptist University. The 1995 graduate of Northwestern State University is responsible for public and media relations for the ETBU Athletic Department, covering 12 NCAA-sponsored sports. As S.I.D. Weaver is the official statistician for every sport at ETBU and also designs and writes media guides for all sports on campus. He also controls the content on the university’s athletics web site, at www.etbu.edu, and manages the sports information blog on the site. Weaver also facilitates the ETBU Athletics pages on Facebook and Twitter, which have become invaluable sources of media in relation to being about to get news out on the web quickly to fans of the Tigers. Tiger athletics interviews and video clips can now also be found on the university’s official YouTube site. Before joining the staff at ETBU in June of 2000, Weaver was sports editor of the Marshall News Messenger in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He covered East Texas sports -- including ETBU - for five years from 1996-2000 and earned three Associated Press Managing Editor Awards for his writing. Prior to his work at the News Messenger, Weaver was managing editor at The Hardin County News in Lumberton, Texas, a weekly publication of The Beaumont Enterprise. He accepted the position of ETBU’s S.I.D. and began working at the university on June 1, 2000, just a few months before the start of the Tigers’ first football season in 50 years. Over the past 10 years he has also worked in the broadcast booth with radio work for the Tiger football, basketball and softball teams at ETBU. Away from his duties at ETBU, David enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth baseball. He also enjoys reading and writing in his spare time. David and his wife, Jeannie, live in Hallsville, Texas with their children: son Coby, and daughters Melody, Abby and Lily.

INTERVIEWS
All coach and player interviews are directed through the Sports Information Director. Coaches and players are allowed a 10-minute cooling-off period following the game before being made available for interviews. The Sports Information Director will conduct videotaped interviews of coaches and players following the game as needed which will be available on the university website.
PRESS BOX
The Press Box at Woods Field is available for working press and game officials. Seating in the press box is extremely limited so it is advised that media seeking a spot at the table contact the Sports Information Director no later than 24 hours before a game so that a spot can be secured. Ample work space will be provided for the media in attendance in another area of Woods Field if space in the press box is not available.

Included on each individual team page are updated schedules, statistics, rosters, coach information, information for potential recruits, and the most up-to-date news regarding ETBU athletics. Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver completed his second full academic year as the 12th President of East Texas Baptist University in 2010-2011. Dr. Oliver officially became President on June 1, 2009, succeeding Dr. Bob E. Riley who retired after 17 years of service to ETBU. Dr. Oliver was elected President by the ETBU Board of Trustees on Oct. 15, 2008. Dr. Oliver had served as Vice President for Student Life at Baylor University in Waco from 2005-08. He had been employed in various positions at Baylor for 16 years upon his election as President of ETBU. A native of San Antonio, Oliver is a graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He holds a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. Oliver earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M as well. He is also a licensed and ordained Baptist minister having served from October 2003 to May 2009 as the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Crawford, Texas. Dr. Oliver came to Baylor in April 1992 from Texas A&M University to serve as Director of Student Activities. In June 1999, he took on additional responsibilities as the Associate Dean for Campus Life. Then, in June 2001, Dr. Oliver was promoted to be the Dean for Student Development, a post he held until June 2005 when he was named Assistant Vice President for Student Life. For a year he served as Interim Vice President for Student Life before being named the Vice President for Student Life. Dr. Oliver has also served Baylor as a Visiting Professor in the Hankamer School of Business, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education, and Interim University Chaplain. He served in the United States Air Force stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in the late 1980’s. Before entering graduate school, he was a third-grade teacher in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Dr. Oliver’s wife, Susie, was an adjunct faculty member and full-time cheerleader coach at Baylor. Their daughter, Callie, graduated from high school in May 2010 and is currently a student at Baylor.

Sam Blackmon completed his fifth season as head coach of ETBU’s baseball program in 2011. The Tigers finished the 2011 season strong, winning four of their final six games to take series wins in the final two conference series of the year -- including taking two of three games from eventual American Southwest Conference Baseball Championship Tournament finalist Texas-Dallas. ETBU had six players -- five of them seniors -- named to the All-ASC East Division team led by team leader on and off the field in senior all-conference first baseman Ryan Yezak. Overall on the season ETBU finished with 14 wins while fielding a young team, with as many as five new starters in the lineup at the start of the year. The team’s improvement on the mound was also a highlight of the season, with ETBU posting a team ERA of 6.12 -- the best overall mark in the last five seasons. ETBU’s three conference series starters -- junior Pete Fitzsimmons and sophomores Clay Hamblett and Chance Cotton -- finished with ERAs of 5.87 or better, and spot starter Wes Johnston posted a 2.90 ERA in 40.1 innings as a freshman. Blackmon was named just the third head coach in the program since 1984 in June of 2006, a month or so after the Tigers missed the ASC postseason after finishing with 34 wins and hosting the conference tournament the year before, in 2005. The strength of those teams -- veteran experience -- was long gone by the time Blackmon’s first ETBU team took the field in the spring of 2007. Coach Blackmon’s first full recruiting class, the freshman class of 2008,
finished its college careers in 2011. Of that group, three -- Ryan Yezak, Chad Cox and Michael Cox -- were fourth-year seniors who earned All-ASC East honors in 2011. Prior to coming to ETBU, Coach Blackmon had a highly-succesful run as head coach at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. From 2001-2004 under Blackmon, the Crusaders went 107-48-3 for a .686 winning percentage, which set a new school record. His 2002 team at Dallas finished 33-3 and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation, and the ‘03 squad reached as high as No. 14 in the national rankings. Before coaching at Dallas, Blackmon was the hitting coach for the independent-league Tyler Roughnecks in 2001. In the Roughnecks’ only season of competition, Blackmon helped guide the team to the postseason and had two players sign major league contracts. Coach Blackmon also compiled an impressive 184-84 career record as a high school coach, including leading his teams to nine district championships in 10 years. Blackmon’s high school teams made three state tournament appearances and six regional appearances, and he was named district Coach of the Year seven times. In 1999, while at Liberty Christian High School, Blackmon was named the TAPPS Coach of the Year. During his high school coaching career, Blackmon sent 22 players to the collegiate level to continue their careers. Blackmon’s high school stops include Elkhart High School, Liberty Christian High School and Bay Area Christian High School. He also coached football at the high school level, with two state championships in 1994 and 1996 as running backs/defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator at Liberty Christian. Blackmon has also worked as a Staff Evaluator for the Maddog Sports Independent Scouting Network, where he evaluated players’ abilities during tryout camps for Independent Professional League teams. Blackmon also coached the Plano Blue Sox in the Texas Collegiate League in the summer of 2006. He was also manager of the Greeley Grays baseball club in the summer of 2005. Coach Blackmon received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard Payne University in 1991, majoring in History with a minor in English. He and his wife, Marla, have two daughters: Claire and Kayten.

Former ETBU pitcher and Marshall native Bo Martino was named the Tigers’ new assistant baseball coach this past July. Martino, a 2006 graduate of ETBU who played for the Tigers from 200306, returned to his alma mater after spending a year as assistant baseball coach at Marshall High School. “Bo brings a wealth of knowledge and a high energy level to our pitchers,” said Tigers head coach Sam Blackmon when announcing Martino’s hiring. “I think he will continue to build on the things (former pitching coach) Justin Jennings had brought to our program and will continue to elevate our staff. His knowledge, energy and desire will allow each pitcher in the program to continue to develop.” Bo is the son of Joe and Penny Martino of Marshall, and he played at Marshall High School and grew up in Marshall while playing in the local youth baseball ranks. He attended ETBU and played for the Tigers for four seasons, from 2003-06, and earned a degree in Kinesiology. Martino was a pitcher on the Tigers’ 2005 team that finished 34-11 overall and hosted the ASC Tournament, working primarily out of the bullpen and finishing with a 3.84 ERA for the season. Upon his graduation from ETBU, Martino worked two years as the head baseball coach at Gary High School in Gary, Texas, before returning to Marshall to work as a varsity assistant with his hometown Mavericks. “It’s been a goal of mine to coach at the college level ever since I decided to enter the coaching field,” said Martino. “Being a player at ETBU and being from Marshall makes coming back to be a Tiger pitching coach exciting because I want to be able to see the program grow and be a part of its future success. Having been around the area all my life will hopefully help get the word out about how great a school ETBU is both in academics and athletics.”

ETBU ATHLETICS East Texas Baptist University offers student-athletes, students and sports fans a wide variety of intercollegiate athletics programs from which to choose. The ETBU Athletic Department seeks to provide quality Christian education and competition for all its student-athletes. ETBU is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), competing at the Division III level. Division III institutions do not offer athletic scholarships in any sports program. Student-athletes may receive financial aid through academic scholarships, grants, loans, etc., however. ETBU has been a member of Division III since 1998, joining the ranks from status as an NAIA and NCAA Division II program. ETBU joined the American Southwest Conference (ASC) in 1998. The ASC is divided into East and West Divisions, with a current total membership of 15 colleges and universities spanning Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. A 16th institution, Centenary College of Louisiana, has been accepted as a new member and will begin play in the conference in the fall of 2011. ETBU competes in the ASC East Division, which includes LeTourneau University (Longview, Texas), Louisiana College (Pineville, La.), Mississippi College (Clinton, Miss.), University of the Ozarks (Clarksville, Ark.), University of TexasDallas (Richardson, Texas) and the University of Texas-Tyler (Tyler, Texas). Centenary will join the ASC East upon joining the league. The West Division consists of Concordia University (Austin, Texas), Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Texas), Howard Payne University (Brownwood, Texas), McMurry University (Abilene, Texas), Schreiner University (Kerrville, Texas), Sul Ross State University (Alpine, Texas), Texas Lutheran University (Seguin, Texas), and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (Belton, Texas). ETBU currently competes in 10 NCAA sports -- football, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, softball and volleyball. The university will add men’s and women’s tennis in the fall of 2011.

The ETBU Softball team became the first Tiger program and first ASC softball program to win the NCAA national championship in 2010, closing the year with eight straight wins including a 5-4 win over Linfield College in the national championship game on May 24, 2010, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Now in his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume full-time duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed AD-only duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a student at Baylor University.
