The East Texas Baptist University athletics website, located at www.etbu.edu, oﬀers comprehensive coverage of every ETBU athletics program. Included on each individual team page are updated schedules, statistics, rosters, coaching information, information for potential recruits, and the most up-to-date news regarding ETBU athletics. Also included are links to the American Southwest Conference standings, statistics and latest news, as well as links to in-game coverage via audio, video, live stats, Facebook and Twitter.

CREDENTIALS All requests for working press credentials to ETBU athletic events can be made by phone at 903-923-2129 or by e-mail (preferred) to dweaver@etbu.edu no later than 48 hours before a game. Media in attendance will receive a pregame roster/program as well as postgame statistics. Postgame box scores should be available no later than 10 minutes after the game.

INTERVIEWS All coach and player interviews for ETBU Football are directed through the Sports Information Director. Coaches and players may be interviewed on the field after a 10-minute cooling-off period unless otherwise approved by the Sports Information Director. All other interviews outside of game day must be conducted as scheduled through the Sports Information Office.

PRESS BOX

David Weaver is in his 12th year as Sports Information Director at East Texas Baptist University. The 1995 graduate of Northwestern State University is responsible for public and media relations for the ETBU Athletic Department, covering 10 NCAA-sponsored sports. As S.I.D. Weaver is the official statistician for every sport at ETBU and also designs and writes media guides for all sports on campus. He also controls the content on the university’s athletics web site, at www.etbu.edu, and manages the sports information blog on the site. Weaver also facilitates the ETBU Athletics pages on Facebook and Twitter, which have become invaluable sources of media in relation to being about to get news out on the web quickly to fans of the Tigers. Tiger athletics interviews and video clips can now also be found on the university’s official YouTube site. Before joining the staff at ETBU in June of 2000, Weaver was sports editor of the Marshall News Messenger in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He covered East Texas sports -- including ETBU -- for five years from 1996-2000 and earned three Associated Press Managing Editor Awards for his writing. Prior to his work at the News Messenger, Weaver was managing editor at The Hardin County News in Lumberton, Texas, a weekly publication of The Beaumont Enterprise. He accepted the position of ETBU’s S.I.D. and began working at the university on June 1, 2000, just a few months before the start of the Tigers’ first football season in 50 years. Over the past 10 years he has also worked in the broadcast booth with radio work for the Tiger football, basketball and softball teams at ETBU. Away from his duties at ETBU, David enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth baseball. He also enjoys reading and writing in his spare time. David and his wife, Jeannie, live in Hallsville, Texas with their children: son Coby, and daughters Melody, Abby and Lily.

Working press are invited to cover any game in Ornelas Stadium but are asked to make pregame arrangements through the Sports Information Oﬃce in order to ensure a reserved spot in the Press Box. All working media who have reserved a space 48 hours before a game will be given priority at press row.

BROADCASTS All game broadcast requests must be made at least one week prior to the game in question. Ornelas Stadium’s press box includes two separate radio booths with phone lines, one each for home and visitor. Any other broadcast request requires a cell phone hookup.

A World of Opportunity in a Community of Faith Academic instruction at East Texas Baptist University began in 1917 with the inaugural session of a two-year institution known as College of Marshall. The campaign to launch the college had begun in 1911 and was led by William Thomas Tardy, pastor of Marshall’s First Baptist Church. Tardy negotiated the purchase of 100 acres of the original K. M. Van Zandt family plantation for $25,000. Keeping 50 of the 100 acres on Van Zandt Hill in northwest Marshall, the college subdivided and sold the remaining property. Marshall’s citizens subscribed another $70,000, and the Baptist General Convention of Texas assumed control of the college, appropriating $40,000 for buildings and furnishings. The trustees applied for and received a charter from the State of Texas in 1912, and Thurman C. Gardner, an early day Baptist Training Union leader, became the first president in 1913. For the first building, Marshall Hall, contractors broke ground on July 5, 1915. Of neoclassical architecture and completed in 1916, Marshall Hall crowned the highest point in Harrison County. The robust building was a self-contained educational facility with a ground floor gymnasium, main floor administrative offices, laboratories, and library, third floor classrooms, and a chapel/theatre on the top floor. The first freshman class registered in 1917 under President Henry Eugene Watters (1916-1918). The college boasted a teaching faculty of nine members. By the academic year 1918-19, some 300 students were enrolled in either a junior college or an academy curriculum. With World War I raging, a student cavalry unit drilled regularly on the college grounds. New dormitories soon encircled the classic campus quadrangle. In 1924, Dr. Franklin S. Groner, the Secretary of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, conveyed the Baptists’ commitment to assume the college debt if the Marshall Chamber of Commerce would supply $12,500 annually for five years, enabling it to remain open. Leading the college during the trying days of The Great Depression, Dr. Franklin Groner (1928-42) assumed the presidency and instituted a permanent endowment program. In 1935, an additional 43 acres were purchased, including the land and buildings of the St. Joseph’s Boys Industrial Orphanage, some of which was converted to men’s housing. In 1938, Baptist layman and builder Fred Hale broke ground for Laura Groner Hall, a modern residence hall for women. A reduced replica of Mt. Vernon, the stunning structure stood complete in 1940, its austere construction having cost only $10,500.

World War II robbed the campus of its men and resources. By 1943, only 137 students remained. In 1944, the trustees, making perhaps the most important decision in the institution’s history, asked the Baptist General Convention of Texas to elevate the college to fouryear status and to change the name to East Texas Baptist College. A former pastor of First Baptist Church, Midland, Texas, Dr. Harvey Daniel Bruce (1942-1960), the college’s ninth president, oversaw a vigorous postwar enrollment and building boom. Veterans arrived on campus, many bringing their families, and enrollment briefly surpassed 800. Prefabricated war surplus family housing was erected on the campus perimeter. The college added Scarborough Chapel in 1948, which was built in the neo-Gothic style. Also added were Feagin Hall, a new men’s residence facility; a cafeteria and student center; and additions to the women’s residence hall, which was renamed for Merle Bruce, wife of the college president. Two ornate, neo-classical buildings were added in the 1950s, Sanderson Hall (now Craig Hall) to house the laboratory sciences departments, and Harvey Daniel Bruce Hall as the new library/administrative complex. Keys Gymnasium was built in 1960. In 1961 a new women’s residence hall, named after Evelyn Linebery, with its long portico and roomy plantation-style architecture, was completed. Dr. Bruce labored to establish a liberal arts tradition, along with strong degree programs in Bible and religion. His administration’s crowning achievement came in 1957 when the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools granted accreditation to East Texas Baptist College. Under Dr. Howard C. Bennett as president (1960-76), the academic program established enduring credibility. Dr. Bennett, the former pastor of First Baptist Church, Kilgore, oversaw construction of the new Howard C. Bennett Student Center in 1973. Dr. Jerry Dawson (1976-85), who had been Graduate Dean at Southwest Texas State University, became the first professional educator to lead the college. By 1982, the postwar “baby boom” peaked and enrollment stood at 920 students. A spacious new president’s home replaced the stately residence that Drs. Bruce and Bennett had occupied. After the opening of the Mamye Jarrett Library in 1979, H. D. Bruce Hall became available for the Religion and Teacher Education departments. Married students occupied several new brick housing units. Charles Fry Hall for Men was opened. As age claimed some of the original college buildings, the older men’s dormitory, buildings of the old orphanage, and various frame and prefabricated structures were dismantled during the 1970s and

1980s.

In 1984 the University Charter revision changed the institutional name to East Texas Baptist University. However, by 1985, enrollment gains had eroded. During the interim presidency of Dr. Harvey Lewis (1985-86), the University met various deferred maintenance and operating needs. The former president of two other Baptist institutions from 1961 to 1986, Dr. Robert Craig (1986-1992) launched a building program of unprecedented proportions, including the Fred Hale Business Building in 1988-89. Other subsequent construction projects were the Jenna Guest Music Building, the Louise Rogers Spiritual Life Center, now known as the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center; major additions to the Bennett Student Center, construction of the Clifford Nelson Murphy Science Hall, and the Mabee Housing Complex. The untimely death of Dr. Craig in March 1992, only two months prior to his announced retirement, was followed by the leadership of Dr. Bob E. Riley (1992-Present), who had been President of the Howard County Junior College District in Big Spring, Texas. Under Dr. Riley, the University experienced record student enrollments. The campus continued to develop under President Riley’s leadership with the 1995 completion of the Dean Healthplex and Ornelas Gymnasium. Fall 1996 found the opening of The Joseph and Louise Ornelas Residential Complex and the renovation of Marshall Hall, which was completed in 1997. Meadows Hall, which houses the Murphy Instructional Technology Center and the Department of Mathematics was renovated and occupied beginning with the fall semester of 1999. The University Apartments opened in fall 2002, and the renovation of Scarborough Chapel into Scarborough Hall was complete in January 2004. Dr. Riley completed his 17th year at ETBU in 2008-09 after having announced his retirement in May of 2008. Dr. Dub Oliver was named President-elect of ETBU in the fall of 2008 and assumed the office officially on June 1, 2009. The early days of Dr. Oliver’s leadership have led to the construction of the new Ornelas Student Center, which officially opened for the spring semester in 2011, on the site of what was Merle Bruce Hall. The former Bennett Student Center is under renovation to become the new Bennett Student Commons, with the new facility set to open in time for the fall 2011 semester.

O RNELAS S TUDENT C ENTER East Texas Baptist University officially dedicated the 31,852square foot facility, the Louise H. and Joseph Z. Ornelas Student Center, on Jan. 21, 2011. The dedication ceremony capped a construction project that took only about 13 months to complete, beginning with the demolition of Merle Bruce Hall and culminating with what is now the centerpiece of ETBU’s campus. The $8 million facility, which was begun with a lead gift from Louise and Joseph Ornelas, also included donations from J. Lloyd and Mildred Woods, Sodexo, Lee and Susan Bush, Welby C. and Davida Edwards, Hal and Joyce Cornish, Jim Teague, Mary Fitts, Jerry and Ginger Hamilton, Joe and Marilyn Hogue, Rita Storie Turner, Bill and Anita Runnels, Dub and Susie Oliver, Chuck and Cassy Kennedy, Sally Murray, Carolyn Sewell, Linda and Don Ringler, Sherilyn Emberton, Dane and Jo Fowlkes, Ned and Sarah Calvert, Vince and Susan Blankenship, and Paul and Sharon Tapp. As visitors walk into Ornelas Student Center through the front entrance, they cross a ribbon of bricks inlayed into the sidewalk. The bricks are from Merle Bruce Hall, which was razed to make way for the new student center. The bricks are a remembrance to a building taht was completed in 1929 and served as dormitory home to many who lived in the residence hall as students. The first floor is home to Jazzman’s, a gourmet coffee and bakery, as well as a sandwich shop, Sub Connection. Entering the building through the main entrance, the George Fitts Entry, one sees the information desk along with an open room with tables, seating, a stage, coffee and sub shop, the Hamilton Game Room and the Hogue Meeting Room. The Student Activities Area has informal seating for 130 plus a stage area. The Hogue Meeting Room can accomodate 48 in theater style and 32 for a workshop. A graphic pictorial mural, chronicling the history of the College of Marshall, East Texas Baptist College and East Texas Baptist University, wraps around the high ceiling of the Student Activities area. When entering on the south side of the building, through the Norma Raye Teague Entry, visitors see the University Post Office. Also close by are offices for Student Affairs in which the Runnels Conference Room is located inside the suite. The Student Government Association office, donated by the Olivers, is on the first floor as well.

The second floor houses great rooms, conference rooms, a governance room and a chapel. The Lampasto Chapel has stained glass highlighting various scripture verses. The chapel was made possible by a donation from the Bush family. The Woods Great Room can seat 120 for a dinner or 200 in theater style arrangement. The Cornish Great Room can seat 80 for a dinner or 120 in theater style. The Edwards Governance Room holds 50 in conference style. The Calvert Meeting Room seats 36 in theater style while the Blankenship Meeting Room can accomodate 12 in either workshop or conference style. The Discipleship Meeting Room, provided by the Tapps, has a conference table seating 12. Current students, faculty, staff and alumni agree -- the Ornelas Student Center is a place the ETBU family can be proud of. The building was constructed by JE Dunn Construction. Rees Associates, Inc., was the architectural, planning and design firm.

PAVING THE WAY TO HISTORY Engraved bricks, which will be placed in the walkway of the entry to the new Ornelas Student Center, may be purchased for $100 apiece. The bricks contain three lines of personalization to memorialize or honor someone special in your life. All profits from the sales benefit ETBU students. B ENNETT S TUDENT C OMMONS The Howard C. Bennett Student Center underwent a transformation into Bennett Student Commons over the summer. The two-story building located on the northwest corner of the Quad has been renovated to provide an expanded and improved food service area. The estimated $4.15 million dollar project also enhances the retail space for the University Bookstore. The interior of the first floor of Bennett, as well as the second floor, was totally and completely demolished. The beauty and the efficiency of the new design greatly enhances ETBU’s service to students, staff, and faculty. During the middle of the spring semester work began as the bookstore, located on the first floor, moved its operations temporarily to the Heritage Room in the Mamye Jarrett Library. This allowed for the demolition of the first floor to begin. The bookstore, managed by Follett, will return to the first floor of Bennett Student Commons, but on the east side. The east side grand entrance will provide a higher profile to the community. When students returned after spring

break, they witnessed a flurry of activity as outside dirt work and movement of utility services had started. “Completely renovating 31,000 square feet of space in about 90 days is an extremely challenging task. Accomplishing this project is a testament to the commitment of ETBU to an excellent learning and living environment,” said Dr. Dub Oliver, ETBU President. The first floor of the Bennett Student Commons will also become the new location for Phillips Dining Hall, as it will move from the second floor to the first and be renamed the Phillips Great Room. The expanded and enhanced Phillips Great Room will be an excellent location for banquets and other functions on campus. Students, staff, and faculty will enter the building from an expanded patio area on the southeast corner. Once inside, they will be greeted by a very large, well-pro-

portioned foyer with casual seating, a fireplace, and plenty of space for students to congregate. The redesigned main dining area will increase the seating capacity from 285 to almost 500. The new serving stations and food outlets, like the Mex to the Max Cantina and Breakfast All Day, will offer new cuisine and a new standard of service. Goodwin-Lasiter of Lufkin, Texas was the architectural firm for the project. A total of nine construction firms bid on the project with Wieland-Davco of Shreveport, La., chosen as the general contractor. The project had its genesis over a year ago as a committee consisting of representatives from Sodexo, Follett, ETBU faculty,

staff, and students, began exploring the feasibility of renovating the building, which was completed in the fall of 1973 and renovated in the spring of 1991. “The chance to open our new Ornelas Student Center in January, followed by the beautiful, state-of-the-art Bennett Student Commons in August, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that demonstrates the commitment that our donors, Board of Trustees, and University administrators have in making East Texas Baptist a truly exceptional campus; one that focuses on the health, happiness, and success of every one of our students,” concluded Dr. Dennis Robertson, Vice President for Student Affairs.

Dr. Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver completed his second full academic year as the 12th President of East Texas Baptist University in 2010-2011. Dr. Oliver oﬃcially became President on June 1, 2009, succeeding Dr. Bob E. Riley who retired after 17 years of service to ETBU. Dr. Oliver was elected President by the ETBU Board of Trustees on Oct. 15, 2008. Dr. Oliver had served as Vice President for Student Life at Baylor University in Waco from 2005-08. He had been employed in various positions at Baylor for 16 years upon his election as President of ETBU. A native of San Antonio, Oliver is a graduate of Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He holds a Master of Science degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University. Oliver earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M as well. He is also a licensed and ordained Baptist minister having served from October 2003 to May 2009 as the pastor of Canaan Baptist Church of Crawford, Texas. Dr. Oliver came to Baylor in April 1992 from Texas A&M University to serve as Director of Student Activities. In June 1999, he took on additional responsibilities as the Associate Dean for Campus Life. Then, in June 2001, Dr. Oliver was promoted to be the Dean for Student Development, a post he held until June 2005 when he was named Assistant Vice President for Student Life. For a year he served as Interim Vice President for Student Life before being named the Vice President for Student Life. Dr. Oliver has also served Baylor as a Visiting Professor in the Hankamer School of Business, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education, and Interim University Chaplain. He served in the United States Air Force stationed at Carswell Air Force Base in the late 1980’s. Before entering graduate school, he was a third-grade teacher in the Fort Worth Independent School District. Dr. Oliver’s wife, Susie, was an adjunct faculty member and full-time cheerleader coach at Baylor. Their daughter, Callie, graduated from high school in May 2010 and is currently a student at Baylor.

he 2010 season at East Texas Baptist for head coach Mark Sartain was a season of firsts for the Tigers even through ETBU had to settle for a third 5-5 finish in its last four seasons. The Tigers closed the year by winning three of their final four games, the strongest finish to a season since 2003 which happened to be the only playoff appearance in the 11-year history of the program. Junior quarterback Sed Harris became the first ETBU player to post 1,000-yard seasons in both rushing and passing, and he became just the second player in the history of the program to post a 1,000-yard rushing season. Junior tailback Jair Stover was the first Tiger since all-time rushing leader RoShawn Johnson to eclipse the 2,000-yard mark for career rushing yards. The 2010 Tigers also became the first team since the 2001 squad to win a game against a non-conference opponent, knocking off Wisconsin-La Crosse in the season opener. And, senior cornerback Victor Flores became the Tigers’ all-time leader in interceptions and finished his ETBU career with 13 picks. The strong finish to the season, however, might be the biggest positive for the Tigers going forward. Faced with a 2-4 record just past the halfway mark of the season, and coming off two losses that saw ETBU be outscored 98-38, Sartain rallied the troops and saw his team surge over the final month of the season with three victories in the final four games. The only loss during that stretch was a 34-28 setback to eventual conference champion and fourth-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor, who had to play into overtime to shake off the pesky Tigers. Over the final four games of the 2010 season, ETBU averaged 32 points per game while allowing just 21. Included in that stretch of games was a 24-0 shutout of Howard Payne, the first shutout by a Tiger defense since the 2003 season. ETBU locked up the fourth-place spot in the ASC standings a week later by rolling to a 47-28 season-ending win over Sul Ross State, which was the most points scored by a Tiger team under Sartain. Sandwiched around the two midseason losses to Hardin-Simmons and Louisiana College, the Tigers went 2-2 to start the year, including a 33-20 victory on the road at Wisconsin-La Crosse, which ranks No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division III for wins. ETBU lost two straight games after the season opener but came back to knock off an explosive McMurry team, 23-21, in a contest that saw the Tiger defense rack up nine sacks. With a full cycle of recruiting under its belt, along with a blossoming junior varsity program that allows incoming freshmen the opportunity to play a full season of games at the college level, the Tigers appear set to continue their upward trend in the ASC standings under Coach Sartain’s leadership. Sartain was named just the second head coach in the history of East Texas Baptist 2011

University’s modern-day football program on Dec. 13, 2006. He took over a program that had slipped to 3-7 the year before and had gone 13-17 over the previous three years after winning a share of the 2003 ASC title. He immediately made recruiting and facility upgrade a priority that first offseason and brought in a young team that saw ETBU field a starting lineup in 2007 loaded with freshmen and sophomores, resulting in a 5-5 mark. The Tigers got off to a 3-1 start in 2008 before slumping to four losses over the final six games to finish at 5-5 again. A killer five-game losing streak in the middle of the 2009 season saw the program slip to a 3-7 finish, but ETBU set the tone for 2010 with its big road win at WisconsinLa Crosse, a victory that snapped a nine-year losing streak in non-conference games and season openers. The program played its first full, nine-game season with a junior varsity program in 2009 and followed that with another full season for the “Gold Team” in 2010. ETBU had fielded a JV in years past but had never played near the equivalent of a full season schedule until 2009. Sartain spearheaded an effort to refurbish ETBU’s weight room in the Carlile-Howell Fieldhouse before he ever coached a game with the Tigers. The workout facility is now up-to-date and modernized. The program also played its first-ever home games at night in 2009, with the addition of lights to Ornelas Stadium and the practice facility adjacent to the stadium. Sartain arrived at ETBU with a long history of success in the East Texas coaching ranks, both at the high school and junior college levels as a head coach. With a coaching career that spans over a quarter-century, Sartain has developed a wealth of contacts among the coaching community that has been a tremendous asset in ETBU’s recruiting efforts. Under his direction the last three years the Tigers have implemented a series of spring coaching clinics, “Monday Night Football,” in which area high school coaches meet and share ideas and philosophies on Monday nights in the spring. The Tigers have also focused on off-the-field contributions to the surrounding community during Sartain’s time as head coach. These activities included a summer mission trip to Croatia in the summer of 2008 in which a group of ETBU football players and coaches, including Sartain, visited war-torn Croatia and helped rebuild a church among other various mission activities. A 2009 summer trip to England got as far as Heathrow Airport before the ETBU players and coaches on the trip were detained at the airport due to a visa mishap that resulted in the team having to turn around and fly home after a long wait. The experience has not deterred the ETBU football team, however; which conducted a pair of overseas camps and activities to the Ukraine and Turkey in the summer of 2010. ETBU players have also participated in youth mentoring programs while also aiding local efforts by Habitat for Humanity. Sartain also began youth summer football camps at ETBU, with Tiger coaches and players working with area youth during a week-long camp at Ornelas Stadium. In 2010, the Tigers co-hosted a camp with the football staff of Oklahoma State University in Ornelas Stadium. Sartain has also put the Tigers on the national map in terms of the team’s scheduling. ETBU scheduled traditional Division III powerhouse St. John’s in Minnesota to open the 2008 season and later faced Azusa Pacific, located in Azusa, Calif., in the ninth game of the season. In 2009, ETBU played its first all-Division III schedule with non-conference games at home against Wisconsin-La Crosse to open the season followed by a road game back to the West Coast to face Redlands. The Tigers once again played those two non-conference foes as part of another all-DIII schedule in 2010. Prior to accepting the ETBU head coaching position, Sartain spent the previous four seasons as head coach at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas. He guided the Cardinals to the Southwest Junior College Football Conference (SWJCFC) championship in 2005. It was Sartain’s second stint on staff at Trinity Valley, having served as offensive coordinator with the program from 1991-94. The 1994 season culminated with TVCC going 12-0 and winning the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national

championship. A native of Van Alstyne, Texas, Sartain has been a head coach at some level for 18 years, beginning with his first head coaching job at Cross Roads High School, in Athens, in 1986. In fact, of his 24 seasons as a football coach, Sartain has been either a head coach or coordinator in 23 of them. He has spent every year of his career coaching in East Texas, from Athens to Eustace to White Oak to Marshall. But before coming to ETBU, Sartain had been a collegiate head coach just four years, and that was at the junior college level. But his success at Trinity Valley on the offensive side of the ball was very attractive for ETBU officials when the Tiger head coaching position opened up following a 3-7 mark in 2006. Sartain’s offenses at Trinity Valley were consistently among the best in the nation, especially when he was coordinator in the early 1990s. The Cardinals ranked in the top 10 nationally in total offense and also set a conference record in 1994, with 450 points in just 12 games. In his four years as offensive coordinator at TVCC, Sartain coached three Cardinal quarterbacks to All-America honors. During his years as offensive coordinator at TVCC, the Cardinals were a combined 30-12-2 with an unbeaten national championship season in 1994. A dozen players off those teams have either played or continue to play in the NFL, including cornerback Al Harris of the Green Bay Packers and kicker Matt Bryant of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Sartain left his coordinator position at Trinity Valley in 1995 to take over as head coach at White Oak High School in White Oak, Texas. In his eight seasons there as athletic director/head coach with the Roughnecks, Sartain’s teams made the playoffs three times and won the school’s first district football championship in 18 years. As AD, Sartain implemented White Oak’s athletic booster club while also establishing the annual “Maroon Madness” midnight pep rally to generate community enthusiasm and usher in 2011

the new school year and fooball season. White Oak generated an increase in football program participation of more than 80 percent and an overall athletic program participation increase of 40 percent under Coach Sartain’s watch. Sartain also implemented girls softball, girls powerlifting, cross country and track at White Oak, and the Roughnecks won 15 district championships in seven different sports in his time as athletic director. He returned to Trinity Valley prior to the 2003 season to accept the Cardinals’ head coaching position. In his four seasons as head coach, TVCC went 17-23, which included a 9-3 mark in 2005 that saw the Cardinals win the conference championship and finish No. 7 in the national JUCO rankings. Overall in his eight seasons as either offensive coordinator or head coach at Trinity Valley, the Cardinals posted a 47-35-2 record with a national championship with Sartain on staff. In his last two seasons at TVCC, the Cardinals had 16 players sign Division I scholarships with programs such as Arkansas, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Washington State, New Mexico, Memphis, Hawaii, Bowling Green and Tulsa. Of those 16, only two had been original Division I signees out of high school. Sartain began his coaching career after his college playing days ended at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. As a player he was a starter on the Kangaroos’ 1981 NAIA Division II national championship team and finished as a twotime Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) all-conference nose tackle. A serious knee injury ended his playing career, but Sartain went on and received a B.A. in Physical Education and History in 1982. A year later he completed work on a masters in Secondary Education from Austin College. He entered the coaching field in 1984 as defensive line coach at Athens High School, where he also served as junior varsity head coach. Sartain also was Athens’ powerlifting coach from 1983-86, leading a group that finished as regional champions three times and was state runnerup in 1985. In just his second season on staff at Athens, Sartain was promoted to offensive coordinator. While on staff at Athens, Sartain saw the Hornets accomplish their first winning season in five years in 1984 with a 6-2-2 finish and secondplace district finish in 1985. He was named head coach at Cross Roads High School in 1986, just three years removed from college. Sartain led the program there to its first non-losing season (5-5) and first winning season (6-2-2) in the school’s history. In fact, in the six years prior to his arrival, Cross Roads won a total of five games at the Class A level before winning five in Sartain’s first season as coach in ‘86. Cross Roads went 6-4 in 1988 and finished as district runnerup, but the team missed the playoffs after missing out on a district tiebreaker. Sartain left Cross Roads in 1989 to become head coach at Eustace High School in 1989. After two seasons with the Bulldogs, he entered the collegiate coaching ranks with his first stint at Trinity Valley in 1991. His life is in no means dedicated solely to football, despite his accomplishments. Coach Sartain is very active away from the field, enjoying building rustic furniture as well as hunting. He also enjoys working out and playing racquetball as time allows. He also has a deep passion for music, as well as a passion for serving Christ. Sartain has spent a bi-vocational career as minister of music, spending eight years as worship leader at Calvary Baptist Church in Longview, Texas, while also coaching at White Oak. He has performed as lead singer in a praise and worship band while also continuing to fill in as worship leader for area congregations on an interim basis. Mark and his wife, Gina, are members of Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall and live in Harleton, Texas, just a few minutes drive away from the ETBU campus. They have two adult children, Marshall and Melody, both of whom are married, and three grandchildren: Jillian, Hannah and..XXXXX.

ike Papas will serve as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at ETBU in 2011, in just his second season on staff with the Tigers. Papas completed his first season on staff at ETBU in 2010, working with Tiger quarterbacks and also serving as the team’s technology and video coordinator. Under Papas’ guidance and direction, ETBU junior quarterback Sed Harris became the first player in the history of the program to rush and pass for 1,000 yards in a single season. Harris also was the Tigers’ second player in history to amass 1,000 yards rushing in a single season, earning honorable mention All-American Southwest Conference honors for the first time in his career. Harris and Seth Hubbard combined to complete 177 of 318 passes for 1,715 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2010. The combined completion percentage of the two quarterbacks was 55.6, and the three passes completed by receiver Kwame Spikes on the year makes the team’s overall completion percentage a program-record 56.1. Coach Papas joined the ETBU staff in June of 2010 after serving as head coach at North Crowley High. Papas was named the first head football coach at North Crowley in 1998, when the school opened. The Panthers evolved through the Class 3A, 4A and 5A ranks under Papas’ direction, which included a run to the 2003 Class 4A Division I state title. Papas’ teams competed in brutal district alignments that featured such Texas powerhouses as Aledo, Stephenville, Brownwood, Mansfield Summit and Abilene. In the team’s first year of completion in Class 5A, North Crowley finished second in District 4-5A and qualified for the playoffs. The following year, North Crowley won the district title with a 9-1 mark. In 2005, Papas was named the district’s Coach of the Year. In his career at North Crowley, Papas was recognized as Coach of the Year twice in district play, and by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fox Sports Southwest, Texas PrepXtra, High School Xtra and the Texas Sportswriters Association. He was also selected as the Riddell Southwest Regional Coach of the Year. Prior to coaching at North Crowley, Papas was offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Corsicana High School from 1986-98. He also served as the Tigers’ scouting coordinator and was the head powerlifting coach. Papas was offensive coordinator at Crowley High School from 1983-85, and he was freshman and junior varsity coach at Sherman High School from 1981-82. A native of Raytown, Mo., Papas graduated from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, in 1980 with degrees in Biology and Physical Education. He received his Master’s degree in Education from Austin College in 1991 and has teaching certifications in Biology, Health and Physical Education. Coach Papas and his wife, Leska, have two children, Casey and Kellie. Coach Papas enjoys snow skiing, bicycling, computer technology and reading in his spare time.

an Burk completed his first season on staff at East Texas Baptist in 2010, serving as linebackers coach for the Tigers. Junior linebacker Jon Chitty was named second-team All-ASC after leading ETBU with 77 tackles, the most by an ETBU defender since 2005. Converted defensive back Jordan Hayes, a sophomore, started every game at inside linebacker and was second on the team with 73 tackles and two interceptions. Coach Burk spent the 2009 season as head coach at Caney Creek, after serving two seasons as head coach at Yoakum High School. He has also held head coaching positions in Texas at The Colony High School, Navasota High School, Wimberley High School and Ranger High School during his career. Burk has also worked on high school staffs at Canyon, Big Spring, Abilene Cooper, Putnam City North (Okla.), Amarillo Caprock, Clyde and Uvalde. In his 25 years as a 2011

ead coach Mark Sartain hired Randy Pippin as the Tigers’ new defensive coordinator this spring, adding the former head coach of Trinity Valley Community College, Northwest Mississippi Community College and the University of West Alabama to the ETBU staff. Pippin has spent 14 years of his 23-year coaching career as a head coach, most recently at The Classical Academy in Colorado Springs, Col., and finishing 12th in the state despite being the smallest school in its classification. Pippin also joins the ETBU staff after serving as national director of the Glazier/Mega Football Coaching Clinics. Prior to taking on his role with Glazier, Pippin was head coach at Northwest Mississippi, where he led the Rangers to the MACJC North Division championship in 2006. As head coach at the University of West Alabama from 2001-2003, Pippin was recognized as the Small College Coach of the Year in Alabama in 2002 after leading the team to its most wins in 10 years. Before taking the job at West Alabama, Pippin was athletic director and head football coach at Middle Georgia College from 1998-2000 where he produced two 10-win seasons and two bowl champions. One of his players at Middle Georgia, Kendrell Bell, went on to become the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. Pippin was offensive coordinator at Tennessee Tech in 1996-97, where he coached the school’s all-time leader in total offense at the time. One of his most successful runs as a college head coach came at Trinity Valley from 1993-95, where he led the Cardinals to a 24-8-2 mark that included the 1994 junior college national championship. He coached 19 all-conference players at TVCC and six All-Americans, including kicker Matt Bryant and cornerback Al Harris, both of whom went on to careers in the NFL. The 1994 national champion team finished 12-0 and maintained a No. 1 ranking from start to finish. Following that season, Pippin was named NJCAA Coach of the Year. He had served as Trinity Valley’s defensive coordinator from 1990-92 before being named head coach just prior to the 1993 season. A native of Mesquite, Texas, and a graduate of North Mesquite High School, Pippin was a standout running back at Cisco Junior College and Tennessee Tech. He later began his coaching career with assistant positions at Middle Tennessee State and at Tennessee Tech. A published author and speaker, Pippin speaks nationally on “Implementing Character Qualities for Success,” and football strategies and fundamentals. He holds a master’s degree in Health Education and is married to the former Sally Horton of Cookeville, Tenn. They have four girls, Natalie, Holly, Libby and Gracie.

head coach Burk’s teams compiled a 170-113-3 mark with six playoff appearances in the last 10 years. At Wimberley in 2001 the team finished 12-2 with a state quarterfinal appearance, and Burk led Navasota to three straight playoff appearances and the 2004 district championship. That season also saw the Rattlers ranked as high as No. 5 in the state Class 3A rankings, with Burk being named the District 20-3A Coach of the Year. Burk is a native of Abilene. He received a B.S. in Physical Education and Biology from Texas Tech in December of 1980 and then earned a M.Ed. in Physical Education, with an emphasis in Scientific Basics of Exercise, from Texas Tech in August of 1986. Burk was the Strength and Conditioning Coach at the University of Arizona from 1989-91. He served as an Executive Board Member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 1988-90, and also served on the Arizona State Board of Directors for the National Strength and Conditioning Association in 1989-91. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.), Coach Burk also was Certified Level I Olympic Weightlifting Coach in 1988 at the U. S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Col. During his career, Burk has been a featured speaker at over 20 coaching and strength and conditioning clinics around the country. He has also authored or assisted eight published works featuring strength and conditioning. Coach Burk is also member of the Texas High School Coaches Association, the American Football Coaches Association and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, among others. Coach Burk and his wife, Dana, have two sons, Dane and Derek.

econdary coach Sam Brandon is in his second season on staff at ETBU, having served as a defensive assistant during the 2010 season. Coach Brandon joined the staff last season as a coaching intern through the NFL Players Association and American Football Coaches Association, which provides coaching opportunities for retiring NFL veterans. Brandon is the second former NFL player to serve as an NFL intern on staff at ETBU, joining former NFL offensive lineman Todd Washington who worked on staff during the 2006 season. Brandon played six seasons with the Denver Broncos after starring at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. He played in 63 games with the Broncos, finishing with 128 tackles, one interception and four forced fumbles before suffering a career-ending injury. After beginning his college career at UNLV as a receiver, Brandon switched over to the defensive side of the ball and became an all-conference safety with the Rebels. Brandon played in high school at Riverside North in Riverside, Calif. In high school he was also a standout in basketball as well as competing in five track events, including the 200 meters.

ohn McCoy has joined the East Texas Baptist University staff as receivers coach for the 2011 season. Coach McCoy is a graduate of Pittsburg State University, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration. He most recently worked at Kelce College of Business as a graduate assistant during the 2010-2011 school year. McCoy has also worked as a camp coach with Championship Coaching Systems in Colorado Springs, Col., and the System Clinics Football Camp in Lexington, Ky. He also served as a student intern at Langford IC Systems, Inc., in Mansfield, Mass. McCoy was the starting quarterback at Pittsburg State in 2009, while also serving as team captain. He also was an all-conference track and field performer, competing in the javelin. In 2009 at Pittsburg State, McCoy threw for 1,453 yards and 11 touchdowns while playing in 10 games. He also rushed for 106 yards and six touchdowns. Against Emporia State that season, he passed for a career-high four touchdowns and 288 yards in a 44-14 victory. He saw action in the 2008 season as well, passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns with two rushing touchdowns while playing in 11 games.

ormer Tiger quarterback Thad Fortune is in his second year back on campus as a member of the ETBU football coaching staff. Fortune, the team’s starting quarterback as a senior in 2007, is the Tigers’ receivers coach. Under his guidance, 16 different receivers caught passes on the season and the offense generated its most touchdown passes -- 13 -- in a

season since 2006. Fortune played for the Tigers from 2004-07. As a senior starter in 2007 he passed for 1,251 yards and six touchdowns while playing in all 10 games for the first time in his career. He finished his four-year run with ETBU having played in 25 games. Coach Fortune earned his bachelor’s degree from ETBU in 2008 and has worked as an assistant coach at Stephenville High School in Stephenville, Texas. He is originally from Anson, Texas, where he was named All-District in three different sports (football, baseball and basketball) at Anson High School. Thad and his wife, Kristy, live in Hallsville.
