KENT REEVES
DAVID WEAVER
Director of Athletics
Sports Information Director
Entering his 14th year as Director of Athletics at East Texas Baptist University, Kent Reeves has presided over the Tigers’ transformation into a solid member of the NCAA Division III ranks. Reeves, who remains the winningest coach in two athletics programs at ETBU, originally stepped down as women’s basketball coach in 1997 to assume fulltime duties as athletic director. He also was named the university’s first softball coach that year and laid the foundation for a program that has become one of the best in the nation annually. Under Reeves’ guidance as AD the department has grown from just five sports in 1997 to 10 in 2010, with men’s and women’s tennis set to be added in the fall of 2011. ETBU athletics programs have consistently competed for championships in the American Southwest Conference, with nine conference titles and 17 ASC division titles since joining the Division III ranks in 1998-99. ETBU teams have combined to make 41 conference tournament appearances since 1998, and the Tiger softball program claimed the university’s first NCAA national championship last spring. Facility upgrades have also been a staple of Reeves’ time as athletic director. Since 1997, ETBU has added new playing facilities for softball, football and soccer. Various upgrades and improvements have been added to each athletics program on campus over the last 10 years. Reeves arrived at ETBU as women’s basketball coach in 1987. When he decided to step down as basketball coach following the 1996-97 season, Reeves had directed the lady Tigers to an average of 20 wins per season in his 10 years as coach. He finished with 206 wins and his teams made nine NAIA postseason appearances. As softball coach from 1998-2000, Reeves built the program from scratch and culminated with the program’s first ASC championship in 2000. He assumed ADonly duties after that season but returned to the dugout in a pinch for the 2004 season. That year, the Tigers posted a program-record 41 wins. He then took another year off before returning for the 2006-07 seasons, finishing with a program-record 183 wins over six seasons. Reeves is active in the Marshall community, serving in the Marshall Lions Club as well as being a deacon at Central Baptist Church. He and his wife Mary Beth have two daughters: Kendra, who is married to Austin Skipworth, and Taylor, a recent graduate of Baylor University.
David Weaver completed his 10th year as Sports Information Director at East Texas Baptist University in 2009-2010. The 1995 graduate of Northwestern State University is responsible for public and media relations for the ETBU Athletic Department, covering 10 NCAA-sponsored sports. As S.I.D. Weaver is the official statistician for every sport at ETBU and also designs and writes media guides for all sports on campus. He also controls the content on the university’s athletics web site, at www.etbu.edu, and manages the sports information blog on the site. Weaver also facilitates the ETBU Athletics pages on Facebook and Twitter, which have become invaluable sources of media in relation to being about to get news out on the web quickly to fans of the Tigers. Tiger athletics interviews and video clips can now also be found on the university’s official YouTube site. Before joining the staff at ETBU in June of 2000, Weaver was sports editor of the Marshall News Messenger in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He covered East Texas sports -- including ETBU -- for five years from 1996-2000 and earned three Associated Press Managing Editor Awards for his writing. Prior to his work at the News Messenger, Weaver was managing editor at The Hardin County News in Lumberton, Texas, a weekly publication of The Beaumont Enterprise. He accepted the position of ETBU’s S.I.D. and began working at the university on June 1, 2000, just a few months before the start of the Tigers’ first football season in 50 years. Over the past 10 years he has also worked in the broadcast booth with radio work for the Tiger football, basketball and softball teams at ETBU. Away from his duties at ETBU, David enjoys spending time with his family and coaching youth baseball and softball with his children. He also enjoys reading and writing in his spare time. David and his wife, Jeannie, live in Hallsville, Texas with their children: son Coby, and daughters Melody, Abby and Lily.

ETBU’s football stadium opened just one month into the Tigers’ return to football after a 50-year absence back in 2000. Carved out of the East Texas earth and surrounded by the area’s trademark pines, Ornelas Stadium and the complex surrounding it provide one of the best settings for NCAA Division III football in the nation.
The men’s and women’s soccer teams play in a soccer-only facility constructed in 2002, just north of Ornelas Stadium. A remodeling of the facility prior to the 2007 season included the re-naming of the field to Cornish Field, and lights were added to the facility after intitial construction with a gift in honor of former lady Tiger Brooke Adair.
Taylor Field is the home to the 2010 NCAA Division III Softball National Champions and has been the home to ETBU softball since the program started in 1998. The Tigers brought home the 2010 national title -- the first NCAA championship in ETBU history -- with a magical championship run that included an 8-game win streak to end the postseason.
Woods Field in some name or capacity has provided the home to Tiger baseball since the sport was added on campus in the mid-1960s. Lights were added to the complex in 2008 to provide the first nighttime baseball experience in the program’s history. Woods Field’s location provides a wide-ranging, scenic view of the ETBU campus.

HEAD COACH BERT WEST
C
oaching veteran Bert West has never been comfortable patting East Texas Baptist head coach Bert West enters his 17th himself on the back. He simply prefers to let the record speak for season with the Tigers needing 15 wins to become the itself, good or bad. This applies to his program’s all-time winningest coach. basketball teams over the years and pretty much life in general. But here’s the record talking: with just 15 more wins, West will become the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, East Texas Baptist University. It’s a mark that West rarely discusses, but when he does its almost with hushed reverence and near-embarrassment. Not because it’s not significant, but because he has so much respect for the man he’s chasing -- good friend and former colleague Dr. Jim Webb. He also doesn’t really want to dwell on or talk much about what happened last season with his 16th Tiger basketball team. So here’s the record: eight wins in the final 10 games, including a big-time seven-game win streak in which the Tigers looked like the best team in the ASC over a three-week period. Included in that stretch was a dramatic come-from-behind win the second half against perennial conference power McMurry in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament, the program’s first ASC postseason victory since joining the ASC back in 1998-99. None of that matters much to West as he enters his 17th season on the Tigers bench. All that matters is that there’s another season to play, coming up pretty fast, in 2010-2011. There is no winning streak, no record. The 2010-11 team must work all over again to find its chemistry and its niche. “There’s just nothing to really compare yourself to in our league from yearto-year anymore,” says West, who now has 205 wins as head coach of the Tigers. “You just have to know that everyone will be improved. The best will keep getting better, and the ones who might have been down the year before have been working like crazy to catch you. The only thing we have to control is ourselves and how hard we work and improve. That’s the challenge I enjoy every year.” Outside of a brief one-year stint as head coach at Southern Arkansas University back in 1997-98, West has coached 16 of his 17 years as a college coach at ETBU. He coached for six years with the Tigers from 1991-1997, left for SAU in 1997-98, then eventually landed back at ETBU in 2000. The 12 wins at Southern Arkansas give him 217 collegiate victories, and coupled with 397 wins coaching high school boys basketball, Coach West enters the 2010-11 season with a total of 614 victories. West left his home state of Arkansas to attend ETBC and play for Tigers Hall of Fame coach R. C. Kennedy in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. He received his bachelor’s degree from ETBC in 1972. He coached at various schools throughout Texas and Arkansas before settling in for one of the most dominant runs of any era at Zwolle, La., High School in the 1980s. Blessed with basketball tradition at Zwolle and also being in the right place at the right time, the Hawks reeled off a six-year run that saw them win four state championships and win 50 games in a row at one point. Included on some of the best teams in Zwolle during that period was Tony Cutright, who would play for West again at ETBU in the mid-1990s and then return as an assistant coach with the Tigers before eventually being inducted into ETBU’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Webb retired as coach at ETBU in 1990, taking the all-time wins record with him at 219. West returned to his alma mater to take a crack at the college ranks, and outside of a two-year stint as girls head coach at Marshall High School in 1998-2000, has been a collegiate head coach ever since. West’s first run with the Tigers included a 1994-95 squad that led the NAIA in scoring with 102.8 points per game, and a 1995-96 team that finished 28-5. Since returning to the program, West’s teams have advanced to five ASC conference tournaments and have one division championship, the 2002-03 ASC East title. Bert and his wife, Diana, have two grown children: Amy and Brody. They also have four grandchildren: Caleb, Peyton, Sydney and Presley. Coach West is also an avid

Prather has been around the program since arriving as a student at ETBU back in 2004-05. He assumed the role of student assistant coach early in his college career and has become one of the top young assistant coaches in the American Southwest Conference according to his boss. “Michael has an intricate knowledge of the game and works very hard at studying the game of basketball,” says Tigers coach Bert West of his assistant. “He has been instrumental in our team’s defensive improvement the last couple of seasons.” Prather primarily coordinates defensive game plans for the Tigers as well as working with the program’s guards. He also is a key part of ETBU’s recruiting efforts every year, having helped put together back-to-back strong classes entering the 2009-10 season. Prather is a native of Cleveland, Texas, where he attended Tarkington High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from ETBU in December of 2007. THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE
2009-2010 PRESEASON MEN’S BASKETBALL POLL
The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, is in its second decade of providing quality athletic experiences for its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions from outside the Texas borders. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across the 422,060 square miles of the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement to conference and NCAA Division III championships. The American Southwest Conference embodies a multidimensional mission aimed at creating an environment characterized by opportunities to learn, friendly competition and activities for its conference membership. ASC members believe team and individual sports provide learning opportunities, and its membership strives to create an athletics environment supportive of teaching and learning. Conference and NCAA resources also provide student-athletes, coaches and administrators access to academic, leadership, sportsmanship and career enhancement opportunities. Traditional standards of ethical conduct and fair play are respected among the ASC members. To guarantee the integrity of the association, the membership is committed to furthering the philosophy and policies of the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III and the Conference. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2010-11 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball.
RICHARDSON, Texas (Oct. 20, 2010) –– The University of Mary HardinBaylor and the University of Texas at Dallas men’s basketball teams have been predicted to repeat their American Southwest Conference West and East Division titles, respectively, after a vote of each division’s head coaches, sports information directors and media members, the conference office announced on Wednesday (Oct. 20). Howard Payne University’s Brandon Irwin and East Texas Baptist University’s Josh Chambers earned 2010-11 preseason player of the year honors. Defending ASC champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (22-7, 17-4 ASC), which also won the 2008 crown and has advanced to the NCAA tournament three out of the last four seasons, totaled 182 points and earned 21 of the possible 24 firstplace votes to be the favorites in the annual poll. Head coach Ken DeWeese’s Cru averaged 78.5 points per game last year and won at least 17 games for the seventh straight season. Concordia University Texas (16-10, 14-7 ASC) was predicted for a second place finish with 155 points and two top-spot votes. Three-time ASC champion McMurry University (17-9, 15-6 ASC) received 151 points to land in the third position. Sul Ross State University (9-17, 8-13 ASC) totaled 108 points to round out what would be the division’s four teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament. Hardin-Simmons University (99 pts.) was picked fifth, followed by Howard Payne (78 pts.), Texas Lutheran University (53 pts.) and Schreiner University (38 pts.). HSU picked up the final first-place vote. Texas-Dallas, which went 24-6 overall and 18-2 in league play last season on its way to a second straight division title and an appearance in the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division III Championship, totaled 144 points and picked up 19 of the possible 21 first-place votes. The 2010-11 season – the 15th in league history – begins as early as November 15. The three-day, eight-team, single-elimination conference tournament is slated for February 26-28 at the site of the East Division’s top seed and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship will be on the line. ORNELAS GYMNASIUM
“WELCOME TO THE HOUSE OF BLUES” Ornelas Gymnasium, a gift from the Ornelas family of Tyler, was built in 1995 and replaced Keys Gymnasium as the home to ETBU basketball. Although Keys still stands as an intramural facility, it is on the east end of the complex that now includes Ornelas Gym on the west side and Dean Healthplex in the middle. Ornelas Gym has bowl-stype seating, with three levels of seating extending down to the gym floor. The facility includes bleacher seats at floor level, reserved chairback in a mezzanine level and upper level general admission bleachers. ETBU students are allowed in the floor bleachers, typically across from the Tiger bench, to give the home fans a nice up-close view of the action. It also provides a nice homecourt advantage for the Tigers. Ornelas Gym has become a tough place to play for visiting teams in the American Southwest Conference. The Tigers went 8-6 in their home facility during the 2007-08 season, and those eight wins all came in conference play. ETBU won eight of its final 10 home contests of the year, including a six-game home winning
streak at one point. During that stretch, the Tigers came up with wins against Mississippi College, Texas-Tyler and Texas-Dallas, three teams that finished above them in the overall ASC East Division standings. Beginning with ETBU’s only ASC East Division championship in men’s basketball in 2002-03, the Tigers have gone a combined 47-27 at home in the last six seasons. That’s a winning percentage of .635 in the “House of Blues.” In five of those years, ETBU has won no fewer than eight home games at Ornelas Gym. In the summer of 2007, the gym floor received a facelift. ETBU’s trademark tiger-eyes logo was added to both baselines, and the floor was completely refinished with ETBU, ASC and NCAA logos added. As part of the complex that includes Ornelas Gym, Dean Healthplex was also constructed in 1995. Built with a gift from Ben and Mary Dean, the healthplex opened on the same day as Ornelas Gym and houses state-of-the-art equipment for physical fitness such as treadmills, stationary bicycles, stairmasters and both free and machine weightlifting stations.
Dean Healthplex also has four racquetball courts. All healthplex facilities are free and open to ETBU faculty, staff and students. The complex also includes offices for athletic director, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and volleyball coaches, as well as kinesiology faculty.
