On completion of our foundation degrees, you can progress on to the final top-up award, which is a one-year programme that takes your qualification up to a full degree programme.

Teaching qualifications

We offer a variety of routes into teaching in the post-16 sector. Practical placement experience is an essential component of this programme. We offer part-time routes, on an in-service basis.

A guide to tariff points

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the central organisation that processes student applications for full-time higher education courses. UCAS uses a tariff system, known as UCAS points, which converts a wide range of qualifications into points.

This means you can use a variety of qualifications to help secure your place on an undergraduate course. Use this guide to work out how many tariff points you have and whether you meet our entry requirements.

Student success

Rebecca always had an interest in aviation and was keen to specifically follow this career pathway from the second she left school.

This was one of the reasons why the now 21-year-old, decided to study our Level 3 Aviation course here at Stockton Riverside College.

After achieving her level 3, Rebecca continued at Stockton Riverside to gain her FdA in Aviation and Tourism, before going on to study at Northumbria University, where she completed her topup degree in business and international management.

With a lot of pride, she said: “Achieving my wings after my initial training course at Jet 2 is one of my proudest achievements to date, along with graduating with a first-class degree!” With her wings intact, Rebecca successfully

gained employment with Jet 2 and is now working as short haul cabin crew, flying people on their holidays across Europe. She said: “Every day is so different, flying with different crew and meeting so many new passengers. It’s extremely hard work but also so rewarding getting to see a different country every day.”

We took Rebecca back to where it all began, when we asked her to reflect on her time at Stockton Riverside College. She said: “My favourite memories were when we had the opportunities to visit British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. I found it really inspiring as this was the type of environment, we would eventually be working in.” She added: “I loved my course as every day I learnt something new that I was truly interested in.”

When asked if she would recommend the college to others wishing to study aviation, Rebecca said: “Yes, definitely, the tutors all have industry experience and really want you to succeed.”

Angela explores the world after accessing higher education at Redcar and Cleveland College.

After visiting the College for an open event, Ang took the leap back into education as an adult with an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health.

“If it wasn’t for the support I received during my time at Redcar and Cleveland College, I do not believe I would be where I am now. I had so much support and encouragement from my tutors from day one, and it’s a very well taught subject. I’m really glad I made the decision to return to study. I felt I belonged there, the environment and classrooms were appropriate for mature students, and I was surrounded by like-minded people.”

Angela has gone onto study paramedic science at university thanks to her time at Redcar and Cleveland College.

“For the third year of my paramedic course, I completed a five-week placement. This was self-funded, to explore more of different practices to go into. I had the opportunity to experience how other countries practice medicine in Vietnam, where facilities and treatments are often more limited. The day after I returned, I interviewed for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS), where I was successful in securing a role. I’m looking forward to getting on the roads as a qualified paramedic very soon. My journey started at Redcar and Cleveland College as an adult and motivated me to continue to where I am today.”

The classes are smaller, which meant there was more opportunity to speak to my tutor, and the environment in class was very supportive of one another. I was able to better myself on this course, and still be on my way to my future without being out of education. I’ve made the best friends during my time here, and even gained volunteering experience to help my knowledge. I am most proud of the option I chose to study alongside having five young children, I can be a mum and work to be a qualified midwife.”

Cost: Free - Advanced Learner Loan (see page 60)

Functional skills are a great way to build confidence, improve skills and can prepare you for GCSE. We have experienced tutors who can support you no matter what level you are already at. You may be a complete beginner or just want to refresh your memory and gain an up to date, nationally recognised, qualification.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

On Functional Maths you can brush up on your everyday maths skills such as managing money, calculating and measuring, reading and analysing information and working with fractions, decimals and percentages confidently.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will complete tasks within your classes that will allow your tutor to assess your progress. You will have regular reviews with your tutor to discuss this. When you are confident and ready, you will complete an exam to gain your qualification.

WHAT’S NEXT?

On completion of the level 2 course you could apply for a vocational course, an Access course, GCSE Maths or a level 3 maths course. The qualification at level 2 is accepted by most employers and education providers.

Student success

Access course opened a world of new opportunities for Dominic.

Dom started his future in microbiology with an access course at Redcar and Cleveland College, and now he’s researching microscopic organisms. Having transformed his own career as an adult student, his ambition is now to inspire a new generation of scientists.

Having previously worked in a host of different jobs from Hollywood Bowl to Carphone Warehouse, a stint in pub management and running his own business, it was at 34 that Dominic decided to return to college looking for a career he felt passionate about.

“With a handful of 20-year-old GCSEs, I never believed I could be something like

a scientist,” he said. But his teachers’ enthusiasm for their subject at college gave him, as an adult student, not just the qualification and knowledge, but also a new perspective on teaching and learning.

When it comes to teaching his own students, the team at Redcar and Cleveland College are an inspiration. He said: “The supportive teaching the tutors gave really made learning fun and their passion for the subjects was clear to see. I will always say it was this course that gave me the passion for learning and a bedrock for which I base my teaching today.”

Looking at how his life has changed, he added: “Having the honour of being a lecturer in microbiology at Teesside University, I can now carry on my own research, and I hope to inspire others.”
