Turkiye & Australia First encounter in the history was at Gallipoli in 1915. The naval war was a victory for Ottoman Empire and therefore an infantry war planned by Great Britain.
ANZACs vs Turks • Ataturk was the commander at Gallipoli and he did not see the result of the war as a victory, because he believed that at war everybody lost. • He made the following declaration, which appears on the Ataturk Memorial, Canberra. “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country, therefore rest in peace. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.”
