HALLOWEEN WITH THE JOURNEYMEN More than 300 people attended a free Halloween party at the Old Scout Hall on 28 October run by the recently formed not-for-profit organisation The JourneyMen with the support of the Eumundi District Community Association (EDCA) and Eumundi Community Gardens. There was fun for all the family with games, puzzles, an escape room, food, live music and costume prizes. Will McIntyre is the founder and inspiration behind The JourneyMen and was encouraged by the large turnout. “For our first event it went extremely well. In the future we hope to expand
on the idea. Our aim is to try and build a better community and improve understanding of what it means to be a community.” The JourneyMen promote inclusiveness, uniting men as leaders and inviting them to come together in a safe space. “Throughout our journey together so far we have grown and connected with many like-minded people,” said Will. Men who would like to join the group can visit: t.ly/ R6irp. For businesses interested in supporting The JourneyMen visit: t.ly/Kja7x.

Council says “yea”
Saturday 11 November 2023 Service commences at 10.45am
Sunshine Coast Council (SSC) councillors met on 26 October to discuss and vote on the proposed supermarket development at 10 Memorial Dr, Eumundi. The motion was “that council authorise the Chief Executive Officer to notify the Planning and Environment Court and parties to the appeal that council contends for the approval of the development application, the subject of the appeal, subject to reasonable and relevant conditions." The outcome of the vote was in favour of the resolution with four in favour and two against. Two members abstained from voting due to conflicts of interest. “I was elected to represent my community and over the past four years the community has made their views crystal clear regarding this matter. They are looking to have this approved today. I am urging everyone in the room to show their support so we can move forward and represent our community, not only in Division 10 but the whole of the Sunshine Coast,” said Cr David Law. The process is now with the courts which will control the application’s progress.
Assembly Point: Pte. McIntyre Memorial Tree Memorial Drive, Eumundi (opposite the Post Office) One (1) minute silence will be observed at 11.00am sharp. The Church Bell will ring across town in honour of this important commemoration. All stallholders, businesses, residents and visitors are encouraged to attend. We also encourage the community to participate in the minute silence.

Old station makeover You may have noticed the old railway station building at the Original Eumundi Markets has been given a bit of a makeover? Perhaps the more astute have noticed that the railings on the northern end of the deck are made from the old railway gates, or at least the original metal fittings. We are unsure if it is the original wood from 1891 as the gates were open to the weather and in operation until 1937. The crossing was then replaced by an overpass so impatient automobile drivers didn't have to wait for trains to pass. The building is not the original railway station. It is in the original location as erected in 1891 when the town of Eumundi settled, however someone burned down the original 100yo station in 1991. There was apparently an argument about the expansion of the markets after the railway line and new Eumundi Station were moved. The replica station was built in 1999. Cooroy Freemasons shine In a world often filled with uncertainty and challenges the Cooroy Freemasons have shown that acts of kindness, unity and community support can make a significant difference. Over the past few months they have embarked on a heart-warming journey to support the local not-for-profit organisation Sunny Kids which is dedicated to helping families facing domestic violence. 8
Prizes were generously donated by local businesses in a raffle campaign with the first prize $500 worth of gift cards to Pomona IGA. Cooroy Mitre 10 provided the second prize of a planter stand and seat valued at $300 and the third prize was $250 in vouchers to the Cooroy Hotel. The fourth prize was a $150 prepaid VISA card jointly donated by Cooroy and Eumundi post offices and the Cooroy Freemasons. The Cooroy Freemasons promised to match the proceeds raised dollar-for-dollar with an astounding $3,700 raised, bringing the total to $7,400. This generosity will have a significant impact on Sunny Kids and the families they serve. The organisation recently celebrated a significant milestone with the installation of Bruce McNabb to mark the 110th year of Cooroy Queen Alexandra Lodge No. 212. Frank Hiscock was honoured with a Past Master Jewel to recognise his contributions. A Charity Jewel was presented to Sam Law for his dedication and hard work organising the raffles. The Cooroy Freemasons thank the sponsors and community members whose involvement was instrumental in making a difference to the lives of families in need. They intend to commit to more raffles for local not-for-profit organisations and hope to receive enthusiastic support from local businesses and the Cooroy, Eumundi and Pomona communities.

Rotary and Bendigo Bank combat malaria Cooroy Rotary Club recently announced a collaboration with local Bendigo Bank branches from the Sunshine Coast and Gympie to introduce Rotary foreign currency donation boxes. The program collects foreign currencies, converts them into Aussie dollars and donates the proceeds to Griffith University's malaria vaccine research program. The initiative has raised more than $500,000 to date for health-related projects in disadvantaged countries particularly PNG and South Pacific Island nations.
Sunny Coast tourism finishes year on a high The Sunshine Coast has finished the 2022/23 financial year on a high according to the latest data released by Tourism Research Australia. According to the National Visitor Survey, for the 12 months to 30 June 2023 the Sunshine Coast attracted equal-record domestic overnight visitor expenditure of $4.4B – exceeding the same period for 2021/22 ($3.0B) and the preCovid year of 2019 ($2.7B). Day trippers to the Sunshine Coast also contributed $854M in 2022-23, growing total visitor expenditure to $5.2B for the year. This record overnight expenditure was based on a total of 3.9M visitors which is in-line with visitor numbers in 2021/22. 10
Overseeing the program on the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy Rotary President Chris Durie emphasised the urgency. "Every five minutes a child dies from malaria somewhere in the world." Malaria is a widespread tropical health issue which claims over 700,000 lives annually and incapacitates millions. It is caused by a parasitic mosquito-borne infection not a virus or bacteria – which makes it much harder to develop a vaccine – however researchers are almost at the human trial stage. "There are no administrative costs beyond standard currency exchange fees thanks to the dedicated work of Rotary and volunteers. Please check if you have any unused foreign currency and consider visiting a Bendigo Bank branch to support Rotary's mission to create hope in the world,” said Chris.
As the program will include live reindeers and fireworks, please leave dogs and pets at home.

State advocacy project The Qld Country Women’s Association (QCWA) is nostalgically known for tea and scones but it has always been more than its well recognised fundraising icons. Embarking on a major advocacy initiative in support of a growing group of vulnerable people, the QCWA has launched a state advocacy project to shine a spotlight on preventing women ageing into 22
poverty and homelessness. There is a local connection to this initiative as it began with the QCWA Eumundi branch more than a year ago. Building on a white paper produced by the Eumundi branch advocacy committee the statewide project team includes researchers, policy experts, lobbyists, communication specialists and healthcare professionals and is dedicated to improving lives through advocacy. The project will provide recommendations for the review of government policies to identify gender bias that disadvantages women in the areas of employment, superannuation, education funding and healthcare. Chair of the Eumundi branch committee and the organisation’s state advocacy project lead Stephanie Ryder believes all levels of government should find better ways to address inequity. “Negative outcomes from ongoing policies impact women’s ability to retire in the same financial position as their male counterparts,” said Stephanie. The QCWA believes it makes sense that as a women’s organisation founded on advocacy it must take action. Preparing for the project launch at the QCWA annual conference Stephanie pointed out the traditional values of the QCWA. “This situation is a terrible indictment of our society and we cannot let it continue. We must acknowledge these women, support them, return to them the dignity they have earned and mobilise all sections of our communities to respond to this social emergency. While we do this we must also take steps to prevent another generation of women falling into the same vulnerable situation.” Stephanie Ryder

YOUTH
Mental wellbeing enviro days Stress, anxiety and feeling overwhelmed are catchphrases that unfortunately many of our children are far too aware of these days. Last term Eumundi State School (ESS) teacher Jon Gemmell and teacher aides Ollie Waddell and Natalie Brewster ran Yr 6 wellbeing days in the Enviro Centre where students took a significantly different approach to the school day. The focus was on nourishing the body with fresh food from the gardens and the mind and soul with mini workshops aimed at enhancing coping strategies as young people move on to bigger and better things at high school. Each day began with an introductory session of yoga. On outdoor platforms the students went through an exercise that showed them how their train of thought can go in many different ways. They were told that when given the same information their best mate may make completely different connections and thoughts, or very similar. Workshops also focused on breathing calming techniques, self-talk, awareness of inner voices and using the natural environment to find examples of resilience and determination. To wind down at the end of the day students shared a meal before relaxing in the garden and enjoying peaceful meditation. On the final day of the program each Yr 6 student decorated a flag with their own affirmation as a reminder of how they can challenge themselves to grow. 24
Children’s book donations ESS and Eumundi Rotary are seeking donations of second hand children’s books to sell at the school’s family fun day to be held on 1 December. All funds raised will be donated back to support student wellbeing programs and increase the number of days students have access to this. We would appreciate books that are in good condition. They can be dropped at the school tuckshop Eumundi Cafe from Tuesday to Friday until 1 December. Contact Tania Broadbent from Eumundi Rotary on 0407 020 473 for more information.

Prize winning artists Local author Debra Palmer recently visited ESS to announce the winners of her art competition to create an 'archaeologist turned into a cat zombie' drawing. The 13 first prize winners will have their work used as inspiration and original drawings published in Debra's new illustrated picture book Curse of the Cat Mummy to be published in 2024. “There were terrific artists in every grade. With 129 entries it was difficult to narrow it down to just 13!”

Hot, dry summer predictions If you’re not on town water have you checked your tank lately? The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting below median rainfall throughout Spring and warns that this summer the Sunshine Coast will be hotter and drier than the last three years. Now is the time to check you have adequate water supply and prepare your home for the hot weather to come. Apart from some muchneeded rain in some areas, council is already fielding enquiries from concerned residents about the low levels of their water tanks. Local Disaster Management Group coordinator Wayne Sunderland said many new residents to the Sunshine Coast may not have experienced living in a home reliant on tank water. “In previous years some residents not connected to town water faced a critical water situation after they left it too late to fill their tanks or fix any leaks,” said Wayne. “This led to delays for tank refills with commercial water carriers struggling to meet demand. Anyone experiencing extreme hardship due to a lack of water supply should make their situation known to friends, family, neighbours, relatives or assistance agencies for support.” Find out more about preparing for extreme weather events at: getready.qld.gov.au.
Kin Kin footbridge washed away On 18 October two adventurous and bodacious individuals – Rotarians Les Godwin and Greg Molyneux – set out to walk the Baronia Track (BT) within the Great Sandy National Park. The
warm and slightly misty with a hint of rain. On reaching the creek it was immediately apparent that the suspension footbridge had indeed been washed away from its supports and was lying derelict in and out of the water. Kin Kin Creek is a sizeable and deep creek so it was abundantly clear that the creek crossing was impassable by foot and would likely remain so for some time. Greg Molyneux BT is located 13km NE of Kin Kin and begins at a carpark on Harry’s Hut Road, winding its way south for 2.5km to Kin Kin Creek. Les and Greg’s self-imposed mission was to reconnoitre and determine whether the Cooloola Wilderness Trail (CWT) footbridge across Kin Kin Creek was still in place. This would be important information for the planning of future walks along the CWT. The BT was an easy Grade 3 walk through wallum banksia woodlands including scribbly gums, kauri pines, grass trees and cabbage palms. It was a beautiful morning for a walk – pleasantly
Despite confirmation of the washed away bridge, Les and Greg deemed their reconnaissance mission a complete success. It was only 7.30am when they reached the bridge site so they celebrated their successful mission with a small glass of 555 cranberry juice. On their return drive they stopped off at the Black Ant in Kin Kin because it’s always a good thing after a walk and exercise to enjoy coffee and company with a good mate. Armed with the new information from their successful reconnaissance they were able to revise and finalise the plan for their next walk along the CWT. Sweet! Greg Molyneux

Dr Simon Menelaws
Another new doctor for Eumundi Dr Simon Menelaws has lived through many journeys, both literal and metaphorical. He left his Edinburgh home aged 17 to spend two years volunteering for a small NGO, travelling and working at an orphanage in war-torn Liberia, schools and prisons. Returning to Scotland he studied English Literature and met a friend who would change the course of his life. “He was doing pre-med and

was truly inspirational. I had a very limited view of doctors up until then – I didn't know any! He opened my eyes. I loved English but I wanted to do something useful. Ultimately medicine ticked that box.” After qualifying and emigrating to Australia with his family in 2012 Dr Menelaws spent two years in Adelaide before relocating to the Sunshine Coast where he spent much of the next decade in clinical psychiatry, with stints working in Aboriginal health. As a GP Dr Menelaws’ approach to relationships has been shaped by his own experience of bereavement. “I lost my wife two years ago to breast cancer,” he said. “Walking through that with her was a huge journey personally but as a doctor as well. I want to be on an equal footing with empowered patients who feel I'm trying to understand where they are at and what is important. I won’t always get it right but they are on a journey and I want to support them in the best way possible. “Even someone living with cancer can have a high level of wellbeing if it’s managed well. It’s all about helping them to be the best they can be.” An interest in public health recently led Dr Menelaws to spend a year working for Services Australia reviewing complex Disability Support Pension applications. Now that he's returned to practice he is studying for a Master of Public Health and Master of Health Management and Leadership. Away from work Dr Menelaws is “loving the quiet life” in the hinterland with his children and new partner. “I’m doing yoga teacher training.
Yoga is so fantastic for your mental and physical health. Maybe I'll teach one day, but maybe not, it's more for my own personal journey.” Dr Menelaws is accepting new patients at Ochre Medical Centre Eumundi. Bookings can be made at: ochrehealth.com.au or phone 5442 8882.
