While donating time is not always feasible due to the pressures of work or raising a family, there are many other ways to give back this festive season.

Initiatives such as the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal assist the work of organisations including the Salvation Army Noosa, St Vincent de Paul Noosa, Santa’s Classy Helpers, Youturn Youth Support, Sunny Kids and WomenKind.

There are also simple ways to demonstrate kindness. Say thank you to the person who serves you behind a counter. Smile, share a drink or a meal with neighbours and look out for the elderly who may be lonely this Christmas.

The gift of giving The gift of giving sounds easy but sometimes it is so hard to 'nail' the perfect choice. After years of Kris Kringle bad choices, the Noosa Beach Classic Car Club (NBCCC) changed tack and proposed gift vouchers as an alternative choice to support the Salvation Army Noosa Coolum Christmas Appeal.

What a winner! The freedom of choice associated with vouchers empowers recipients with the dignity to decide their own priorities. It also enables Salvation Army team members to distribute gift cards at their discretion as people in need walk through the doors not only at Christmas but – thanks to the generosity of the car club – well into next year.

Noosa Regional Gallery The light fades but the gods remain is a major exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery showcasing two key series of works by Bill Henson. To celebrate its 25th anniversary the Museum of Australian Photography commissioned Bill to revisit Glen Waverley where he grew up and produce a new body of work reflecting on his earlier series Untitled 1985-86.

Sunset abseiling at Mt Tinbeerwah Noosa council is inviting applicants for an adventure with a difference – sunset abseiling down Mt Tinbeerwah.

NYE fireworks Celebrate New Year's Eve at Noosa Marina in Tewantin with live music from 8pm and fireworks at 10pm and midnight. Further along the river near the Noosa Boathouse fireworks will take place at 9pm. At Quamby Pl in Noosa Sound fireworks will happen at 10pm. Noosa Main Beach will welcome the new year with fireworks at midnight.

Every Saturday from 3-6pm until 30 June eligible applicants pay only $10 for the adrenaline-rush experience with Outdoor Adventures Australia including all the gear and training. No experience is necessary however you must be able to climb a small fence to get to the abseiling ledge and have no pre-existing heart conditions.

The abseiling voucher program is open to lowincome earners who hold, or whose parents hold, a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card, people from CALD background, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, people with disabilities and those people aged 15-24. The Eumundi Aquatic Centre holds aqua aerobics classes each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 7.30-8.30am. A Council Be Active Aqua class is offered on Mondays from 9-10am.

Painting Pals exhibition will open from 6-31 January in the Carriage Room at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery featuring works by local artists Cameron Gillespie and Nicky Orange.

They met in 2017 when Nicky participated in Noosa Open Studios and have painted together at her Tewantin studio periodically since then.

Aqua aerobics is a great way to develop strength and fitness. Entry is for a single session or you can buy a pass for 10 or 20 sessions. In January the centre offers discounted passes so keep an eye out for the sale. Aqua aerobics classes are managed by BlueFit who are currently looking for additional instructors. Visit: t.ly/kLoud.

Sunshine Coast Libraries Sunshine Coast Libraries will be closed for the public holidays 25 and 26 December and 1 January. The Sunshine Coast mobile library service closed on 18 December and will resume on 2 January.

In what will surely be a much-watched opening episode, Netflix will screen Boy Swallows Universe on 11 January. Trent Dalton’s semiautobiographical book of the same name has been made into an eight-part series. Set in Brisbane in the 1980s the story follows a young boy Eli Bell and his selectively mute brother as they try to save their mother from danger. It stars Travis Fimmel, Simon Baker, Phoebe Tonkin, Felix Cameron, Bryan Brown and Deborah Mailman amongst others.

Summer Reading Club Sunshine Coast Council Libraries’ annual Summer Reading Club is back and waiting for children and teens to join the free interactive program.

Each child receives a Cabinet of Curiosities challenge card to help undertake three explorations, unlocking prizes along the way.

Challenges could include building a reading fort or reading aloud while sticking out your tongue.

Car-free holidays The global phenomenon of converting parking spots into more sociable and family-friendly activation sites is set to be trialled at the Main Beach carpark next to the Surf Lifesaving Club with a Pop-up People’s Park this holiday season.

Dubbed the Main Beach People’s Park the concept will create a fun, relaxed gathering place for beachgoers. Acting Infrastructure Services Director Shaun Walsh said the partial closure of the carpark has the full support of local businesses and Hastings Street Assn is supporting the two-week trial by providing buskers.

“We are returning the carpark to the people from 23 December to 7 January 2024. There will be a drop-off and pick-up drive-through lane and disability bays available but the remainder of the carpark will be transformed into a setting of picnic tables, chairs, marquees and live music," said Shaun. “We are looking to create a place where people can socialise, relax and enjoy a picnic while visiting the beach.”

The partial closure of the carpark is coupled with council’s free Go Noosa holiday buses. From 9 December to 21 January there are five free Translink services running across the shire. The Translink Services include the 626, 627, 628, 629 and 632 only. The electric shuttle runs every 15 minutes from 7am-7pm and half-hourly until 10pm linking Noosa Heads, Noosa Junction, Weyba Rd and Noosa Pde. Returning is the additional free temporary route 064 servicing Peregian Beach to Noosa Heads which runs north hourly from 7.30am-5.30pm. Dark skies The push for a Dark Sky Reserve is gathering momentum in our region with Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) proposal for almost 900km2 in the Mary River Catchment and adjoining national parks to reduce light pollution.

SCC’s Environment Portfolio Cr Peter Cox said pursuing an official designation would ensure dark sky quality is monitored and protected into the future.

“This Dark Sky Reserve would be one of only two in Australia. The protected area would complement council’s work to reduce light pollution in coastal areas for nesting turtles and other wildlife and encourage the community to be dark-sky-friendly which also helps keep down energy bills and carbon emissions. We’ll be using $4m in funding secured through the Commonwealth’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to upgrade street lighting in the region to be more energy efficient and reduce light pollution.”

How can you help minimise light pollution? Turn off lights, only use lighting when needed and reduce unnecessary outdoor lighting. Switch to environmentally friendly warm-coloured light bulbs, shield lights and direct lights downwards.

ECCO AGM Members of the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) met on 30 November for their Annual General Meeting (AGM) to review the 2022/23 year and discuss future plans.

Chairman Dr David Campin provided a report acknowledging the retirement of Paul Curtis from the Eumundi and District Community 10

Association (EDCA) and Terry Lawrence from the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA). Kate Gyngell replaces Paul as the nominated representative of EDCA. The incoming chair is Louise Formosa representing the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce.

One of this year's highlights was the production and distribution of a town map by Experience Eumundi, visit: experienceeumundi.com.au/ welcome-to-eumundi. More than $46k in community contributions and sponsorships were distributed during the ECCO board year.

ECCO provides a community taxi service for pensioners and has donated to the Eumundi School of Music, EHA’s Christmas Extravaganza, events at the night markets, Soccer Roots Academy and Eumundi State School (ESS) wellbeing programs funded through the ESS P&C. The board approved community contributions and a sponsorship program for 2023/24 which will be launched early in the new year.

A number of motions were passed including investigating in consultation with council whether there could be a variation to the lease of the market carpark.

The aim is to permit carparking on non-market days within a designated area for use by the general public. If possible ECCO would provide a co-contribution towards any additional operating expenses necessary to facilitate this request. If approved it could alleviate parking pressure on busy days and throughout the construction phase of the Eumundi streetscape project.

COMMUNITY

Permanent police services Recent changes in policing arrangements had left Kenilworth and Imbil without a consistent and dedicated police presence. The changes had the community concerned that the necessary policing requirements for maintaining law and order were no longer available.

When asked if the changes had affected the local policing in Eumundi, Officer in Charge of Eumundi Police Station Sergeant Ryan Hanlon said, “At all times police assign the closest police vehicle for all emergencies regardless of the area. Kenilworth is no different. While any officer is on leave the neighbouring areas will respond and be on call for emergencies as community safety is always our priority.

In a recent update it has been reported that Senior Constable Michael Grigalius commenced on 27 November and will reside in Kenilworth to provide a local police presence and response.

Donation to ESS wellbeing programs Hosting several successful events in the past few months the Eumundi Rotary Club has raised $2,115 to support Eumundi State School's (ESS) wellbeing programs. Events included the 12

Eumundi Cup held on Melbourne Cup Day, the Lift the Lid rail trail walk from Brooloo to Imbil and there were funds raised from the sale of secondhand books at the ESS Fun Day on 1 December. Thank you to those who participated and contributed to the wellbeing programs that will support our future generation.

Eumundi Rotary celebrates Eumundi Rotarians gathered to share some Christmas cheer at Bella 101 on 14 December and celebrate 2023. The Rotary Club of Eumundi thanks the community for their support this year and looks forward to serving them in 2024.

Teams limbered-up for the annual B Active Christmas games at the Eumundi Amphitheatre on 8 December. Much merriment ensued with the tossing of Christmas wreaths, wrapping the human Christmas tree and hunting for elves all with a healthy dose of squats, wall-sits and pushups. Hall celebrations Eumundi and District Community Association members celebrated the recent upgrade of a new verandah for the Old Scout Hall with a lovely luncheon catered by Belinda Sale. Many thanks to local architect Andrew Hillhouse and builder Daniel Lees for doing such a great job.

Christmas in Cooroy Christmas in Cooroy was celebrated with lots of jingles and laughs. Santa arrived in style and his sleigh outside Memorial Hall was greeted by a long queue of children waiting to tell him their Christmas wishes.

The Great Santa Race was a success as always, the children’s decorated bicycle competition a treat to behold and The Butter Factory art exhibitions and craft stalls were popular. The evening concluded with the lighting of the Cooroy Christmas tree.

Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society Noosa District Orchid & Foliage Society members and their partners enjoyed a Christmas lunch at Cooroy RSL on 9 December. New president Trevor Cook welcomed everyone and presided over the numerous lucky-door ticket prize draws.

The society's first meeting for 2024 is at Tinbeerwah Hall on 3 February. A bus trip is organised for 10 February to see the Aspley Orchid Society’s display at the Botanic Gardens, Mount Coot-tha followed by a visit to Red Fox Orchids near Caboolture. EHA & ECCO Christmas Party The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) and Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) shared some Christmas joy on 13 December. A magnificent lunch was prepared by Peter and Shauna Wolfe for carparking, museum and Christmas Extravaganza volunteers.

Guests were entertained with Christmas carols and the delightful Happy Tappers.

Carols at Sconetime The “reindeers” were in full flight at Cooroy Memorial Hall on 12 December with the Eumundi Magic of Voice Choir singing messages of peace and well-known carols to a packed crowd enjoying the final Sconetime for 2023. Pomona Night of Lights Stan Topper Park was full of families enjoying the entertainment and perfect weather. With carols, a sing-along, community choir, music, food, xmas raffles and a laser light show, there was something for everyone.

Recollections of Christmas Most of our memories of Christmas as kids are similar – Christmas trees, presents, family gatherings and maybe even cricket in the backyard. Mine were no different, only the location. I was born in Bangladesh as my parents were Australian missionaries stationed there from 1943.

Bangladesh is predominately a Muslim country with around 0.3% Christians but Christmas was still celebrated by Christians in the traditional way by going to church. December 25 is not referred to as Christmas Day but rather ‘Bara Din’ meaning the big day in Bengali. People greeted each other with “Shubho Bara Din” – Happy Big Day.

Preeri bhoj – meaning love feast – including curries, rice, snacks and sweets. I would eat until I couldn’t fit any more in. To this day my favourite meal is a good curry and rice with Indian sweets to follow.

When it was time to go home we played an international test cricket match in the rather expansive backyard with the missionary kids vs the local Bangladeshi kids. Great fun and lots of good memories!

Bangladesh is a hot country but you could still find fake snow and very colourful Christmas decorations in most towns. Villagers decorated with cut banana trees planted to form arched walkways and decorations made from colourful paper.

My favourite part of Christmas – besides the presents of course – was going to church where men traditionally sat on one side and women on the other. They would perform the Kirtan, a song within the Bengali Christian culture where a singer leads the singing and everyone follows.

The song begins at a slow pace and gradually gets faster and faster and those following form a circle around the lead singer and walk and dance around him. I remember joining in and feeling very happy and euphoric as we danced and sang.

Organisers thanked the players, parents and members for a great year and are looking forward to continuing in 2024 with weekly sessions for competitive and non-competitive divisions. The club is also potentially looking to expand its offering to those in the community who are interested in soccer.

Magpies end of year event The Eumundi Magpies FC wrapped up 2023 on a high note with the participation of one of our teams at a tournament on the Gold Coast.

This was followed by the club’s traditional end

Their teams will be offering complimentary training and are happy for others to warm-up, do some skills training and play games with the team. Depending on numbers there may also be a parents/adults' kick around after training.

Ban on single use vapes The first stage of Australia’s new vaping reforms is set to commence on 1 January with further protections to be implemented during next year. The crackdown is aimed at curbing the growing popularity of these nicotine-filled devices amongst young people.

The government will introduce a ban on the importation of disposable single use vapes – subject to legislative and administrative arrangements being approved.

In parallel with this ban a new Special Access Scheme pathway to prescribe vapes will commence on 1 January to facilitate improved access to therapeutic vapes. Nurses and all medical practitioners will be able to prescribe their use where clinically appropriate.

The government has confirmed from 1 March further changes are expected to commence including the cessation of the personal importation of vapes and a ban on the importation of non-therapeutic vapes.

Energy efficiency kits Two new energy efficiency toolkits are available to borrow free-of-charge from Noosa Libraries and aim to help residents cut their power bills and reduce emissions. Each energy efficiency kit includes a plug-in energy monitor to reveal how much power an appliance uses and the cost of running it over a year.

“These kits help residents make informed decisions about becoming more energy efficient in their homes, reduce emissions and ultimately save money,” said Noosa Council’s Carbon Reduction Project Officer Annie Nolan.

Other items in the kit include tools for measuring the flow rate of taps and showers and a thermal camera for identifying hot and cold spots around the home.

Cooroy Residents Ally and Garry said the kits were really easy to use. “I was able to measure how much power my TV uses just in standby.

Using the thermal camera I could identify a number of hotspots which make my air conditioning work harder and cost more, and ways to reduce electricity and save costs."

Residents can also borrow a portable induction hotplate to test out the new cooking technology and keen chef Ally said using the kit was great.

Council is loaning the cooktops to encourage residents to consider high efficiency induction technology when upgrading older stoves.

Migratory shorebirds are the world’s most threatened species of birds. These amazing birds spend most of their time feeding on the mudflats and sandbanks of the Pumicestone Passage and Maroochy River as they need to more than double their body weight and store essential energy for their long journey back.

They also need space and peace to rest, recover and prepare for their return journey.

Rare sighting In the rarest of finds, a shorebird with an identification tag has been spotted after she arrived from a mind-blowing 10,000km nonstop flight from the Arctic.

The female Bar-tailed Godwit was sighted during a recent survey in a flock of around 120 Bartailed Godwits feeding on Pumicestone Passage sandbanks. Bar-tailed Godwits are world-record holders of the longest non-stop flight and fly

Flagged birds are a rare find with this bird identified by a green leg flag and a unique three-letter code used by the Qld Wader Study Group. She was originally banded – a process by which the flag is placed on her leg – at the Port of Brisbane roost in February 2016. She has only been sighted once at Nudgee Beach in November 2019 and since then she would have flown from here to the Arctic and back again four times!

They even have a small team with a dedicated vehicle fitted with drilling equipment to drill a hole into which a pole is inserted. Once inserted, water is poured into the hole which freezes and locks the pole into position.

A bamboo story For 18 years Bamboo Australia has supplied the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) with long poles to be used as markers at various Antarctic bases. Our poles are harvested here, packed and sent to Hobart, loaded onto ships and forwarded to Casey, Mawson, Davis and Wilkins bases. It's a long way from sub-tropical Belli Park!

HISTORY Paddington Bear On Christmas Eve 1956 Michael Bond discovered a teddy bear on a shelf in London and bought it as a present for his wife. It inspired him to write a story about A Bear Called Paddington which was first published in 1958.

Michael was also inspired by the sight of children arriving in London from Europe during WWII – especially the Kindertransport rescue effort that saw Jewish children brought to Britain from Nazi-occupied territories throughout Europe – and the plight of British children being evacuated from London to the countryside.

Children arrived with luggage labels similar to that he gave Paddington saying, “Please look after me”.

The friendly, bespectacled Paddington has featured in more than 20 books which have been translated into 40 languages across 70 titles and sold more than 35 million copies worldwide. Paddington from "darkest Peru"

Music to industry’s ears

Local poet and lawyer Tom Stodulka AM recently released his fourth book in the Life Is… series.

The music industry has received a funding boost with the Eumundi School of Music, Anywhere Festival and Sunshine Coast Chamber Music Festival announced as the latest beneficiaries of Sunshine Coast Council’s (SCC) Creative Industries Investment Program. Council allocated $90,000 to support these creative initiatives over two years following a rigorous application process.

The book contains 40 poems of freedom, fortitude and friendship which give readers moments of reflection and gratitude and fill in the space of what life is – we all experience highs and lows, wins and losses and challenges.

Readers are encouraged that there is always a reason to stay positive and find a silver lining no matter how bad the storm clouds may be.

Tom lives in Black Mountain after previously residing in Landsborough and Brisbane for many years and earlier across Australia and overseas.

Where does my water come from?

Many of us take for granted that when we turn on a tap there will always be a supply of water to our home or business. So how often do we stop to think where this water comes from?

Eumundi’s town water supply usually comes from three interconnected dams on the South Maroochy River – Cooloolabin, Poona and Wappa Dams. The water stored in these dams is piped to the Image Flat Water Treatment Plant when needed. This plant feeds Nambour, Yandina, Eumundi and coastal urban development north of the Maroochy River.

SEQ Water operates an integrated water network called the SEQ Water Grid. This means sometimes your water may also come from other parts of the region including Baroon Pocket Dam on the Sunshine Coast and North Pine Dam near Brisbane.

The SEQ Water Grid is a 600km reverse-flow network that enables SEQ Water to move drinking water to where it is needed most across SE Qld. It is especially important when patchy

Water saving tips Apart from greening our lawns the recent rainfall has done little to top-up many of the regions' dams and rivers. Households who rely on tank water have had to resort to purchasing water to top-up their tanks during the dry spell.

Thirty years ago our water consumption was just over 500 litres/person/day and there was no incentive to save water as you paid an annual water rate and could use as much as you like. The introduction of water meters and water charges based on how much you use changed that.

New habits and technology such as dual-flush toilets and low-flow shower heads have dropped the average consumption in Brisbane to around 169 litres/person/day.

There are many things we can do to reduce our water consumption: • Don’t turn taps on quite as far.

• Turn the tap off when brushing teeth.

• Clean paths and driveways with a broom not a hose.

• Wash your car with a bucket and cloth instead of a hose.

• Only wash when you have a full load of laundry.

• Adjust the water level on your washing machine to match the size of your load.

• Make sure the dishwasher is full before turning it on.

• Don’t pre-rinse dishes, scrape them before loading into the dishwasher.

Remember we all share our water resources. If you are on tank water you are probably familiar with becoming more frugal as the levels drop.

Town water comes from a river or dam and others also rely on that water – so be water aware!
