LETTER FROM EDITOR As teenagers, we are often faced with prejudice. To most, we are just a bunch of idle, reckless, and complacent adults-to-be. To our predecessors, all Gen Z’ers fall into the category of screenagers, a rather self-explanatory portmanteau word. But the world tends to forget how much the youth matter. Pemuda adalah bibit dan benih perubahan. The youth are the seeds of change, and have always been instrumental in human progress for most of history. One sentence stuck with me throughout the process of creating this issue. It was something Alexandra Schwartz (The New Yorker) wrote in an article about the recent youth climate strike in New York City. “What power, what glory, to be young and filled with furious purpose!” (Yes, this is me subtly suggesting you, dear readers, to look for the article and read it for yourselves. Go on. Once you are done, you may come back.)
Here's a friendly reminder Alexander the Great was 20 years old when he claimed the Macedonian throne, established the largest empire in the ancient world, and heralded the Hellenistic epoch into existence. Louis Braille invented the Braille language for blind people like him when he was only 15. Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein when she was 18. Malala Yousafzai became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize Laureate at age 17. Now, we have Jamie Margolin, Marley Dias, Sophie Cruz, Greta Thunberg, and many more. This is power. This is glory. This is youth. The youth did not crumble in the face of adversity even in the colonial period. Instead, they became the barometer for procession in an impossible setting. Progress took place in the form of Budi Oetomo, Tri Koro Dharmo, and Perhimpunan Indonesia among others. On October 28, 1928, the Sumpah Pemuda (the Youth Pledge) was issued, whereby representatives from various youth organisations and movements across the vast archipelago vowed to recognise only one motherland of Indonesia, one Indonesian people, and one Indonesian language. In light of Sumpah Pemuda Day, the Eunoia team selected Pemuda as our theme for the October 2019 issue. We hope to honor and highlight youth participation and contribution which has always been glossed over across the globe.

SURAT EDITOR
Peristiwa itu disebut “so iconic.

On the 28th of October 1928 during the Second Youth Congress, young Indonesian nationalists declared the ‘Sumpah Pemuda’. The pledge consists of three ideals: one motherland, one nation and one language. The purpose of the Indonesian Youth Congress was to promote the idea of a united Indonesia, especially to youths all across the country, hoping to encourage them to have dreams regarding Indonesia earning its independence. The congress had a total of three sessions: the first discussed about unity, the second was about education and in the final session participants heard the ‘Indonesia Raya’ played on the violin. However, now the condition in Indonesia has changed as it has been ninety years since the pledge was declared. Are youths still upholding the Sumpah Pemuda? Has the people’s love for our country and culture diminished? These days youths may know more about other countries as compared to our own. Learning more about various countries and their culture can be beneficial for us. However that doesn’t mean that we should neglect our own, otherwise how can our country develop?
Youths need to be more involved in activities that can increase their love for their country. Perhaps we should get to know more about our national heroes. Perhaps we should reflect more on what our country would be like right now if it weren’t for their efforts. Perhaps we should allow ourselves to become inspired by Indonesia’s history and culture. We should use the knowledge that we’ve obtained from other culture in a way to inspire others about our own culture. For example, we could learn to animate a movie which is about Indonesia, just like the creators of the 2015 animated movie ‘Battle of Surabaya', also known as ‘November 10th’. The future is in the hands of the youth. We have the power to mould the future in the way we see it. Although it has been more than ninety years, we should still uphold the Sumpah Pemuda even if we do it a new and creative way, different from those before us.

FLORINE LUMINITA first started swimming at the age of five. Back then, she never imagined that she would turn out to be the athlete she is today since swimming was something she did strictly for fun. Her mom has always played a huge role in Florine’s life as a swimmer as she encouraged her to participate in a sport and there was a swimming team in school at the time. When I asked her if she had always wanted to become a swimmer, she answered with an honest no. She has always detested the multitude of drills and exercises she has to go through but has grown to love the company of her friends in the swim team. Her least favorite thing about swimming is the training, after all. To Florine, those moments whenever she finishes a race or routine in artistic swimming and realizes that she has made progress, and especially if she wins, are the most rewarding. Moreover, the budding friendships with other swimmers from other teams and countries and all the time she has spent with them always turn out to be the most indelible memories.
How does lifestyle, mindset and choices affect a person’s perception of growth? Florine defines growth as a learning process involving a positive change in her perspective on a certain issue. For instance, she used to think that competitions were such bothersome burdens, but now she sees that they are, in fact, opportunities for her to thoroughly evaluate her skills and work on certain areas that she is lacking in.
di balik kopiah hitam habibie WRITTEN BY JIHAN NILA SAFIRA PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN FROM THE HABIBIE CENTER
“Kopiah hitam bukanlah simbol suatu agama, ras, suku maupun budaya dan juga bukan hanya sebagai aksesoris semata para pemimpin pemerintah melainkan simbol jati diri bangsa.” Sebut sang proklamator pada saat itu. Saya tertarik membahas mengenai kopiah hitam Presiden ke-3, B.J.Habibie sang bapak teknologi Indonesia.
Terima kasih Rudy, pemuda Indonesia Yang sampai akhir nyawanya mengabdi Pada negaranya.
this month on campus: global sevilla league WRITTEN BY DANIELLA RENATTA CITRA PHOTOGRAPHED BY KATRINA VIONY SANTOSO
After weeks of training and preparation for all competitors, the second season of the Global Sevilla League has finally arrived. It is a sports league in which students from schools around Jakarta can participate in two competitions - U12 Mini Soccer and Boys' and Girls' Basketball every Saturday. Every season, the competitors gather at Global Sevilla Puri Indah Campus’s basketball court to start the new season with an epic game between two teams representing their schools. Multiple games are held in a day accompanied by delicious snack booths and bazaar stalls selling sports-themed goods.
We kick off the brand new season with a game between GSPI’s very own Cyclones girls team against Tarsisius 2, followed by a match between Yadika 5 and SMA 22 and multiple boys' basketball matches to conclude the day. After the matches ended, all the players, their coaches, and audience cooled off with the refreshing snacks and drinks sold by the vendors who set up theirs booths near the swimming pool area. Eventually, the multiple teams competing crossed benches to commemorate this momentous event that is only the beginning to an entire season of the Global Sevilla League.

Q; Why do you play basket?
Q: Who is your biggest influence when it comes to playing basket?
A scrumptious slice of pizza followed by a cup of Oreo milkshakes to sweeten our day. These helped in soothing the nerves of students as report card day loomed ahead. Thanks to the admirable efforts of the Life Skills & Entrepreneurship (LSE) department, we now have enough funds to support various student council activities in the future. Their collaboration and hard work is truly commendable, and it all translates into an impressive outcome for the fundraising event.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is a competition that Global Sevilla Puri Indah has participated in for a while now, with students winning multiple distinctions in specialised subjects every year. The subjects are English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling, and Digital Technology. Usually, the English examinations consist of grammatical questions while the Writing examinations are of argumentative essays. The ICAS assessments recognise and reward academic excellence or success.
The
exams
validate

achievements and provide the well performing students with various platforms to share and practice their special gifts when it comes to academics. In the words of Mr Marko, Global Sevilla Puri Indah’s Vice Principal and ICAS invigilator, “ICAS helps you identify the skills that you are good at and the skills that you still need to improve. When the results come out, you will be able to see the areas that you are good at and how you performed compared with other students let say in your school, or in your region.” The participants are given test papers according to the their ages/grade levels. They are then given time according to their respected test papers to finish the examinations. Eventually, the participants exit the exam room. The papers are then sent to examiners, who are responsible for marking the papers, and the results are sent to the participating schools.
