Written by Kezia Adeline In this 10th issue, we have included some articles that are related to self-love. We have featured a youth organisation, a psychologist, and our very own Sevillian as our main and side features. What exactly is Amour-Propre ? It is a French term that can be variously translated as "self-love". Selflove, defined as "love of self" or "regard for one's own happiness or advantage", has been conceptualized both as a basic human necessity and as a moral flaw, akin to vanity and selfishness, “Why is self-love important?” you might ask. For many of us, self-love might sound like a luxury rather than a necessity - or a new-age fad for those with too much time on their hands. Ironically however, self-care and compassion might actually be needed most by those of us who work too hard, and who are constantly striving to surpass ourselves and grasp the shape-shifting phantasm of perfection. eunoia-5

Most of the time, when we’re being too hard on ourselves, we do it because we’re driven by a desire to excel and do everything right, all the time. This entails a lot of self-criticism, and that persecutory inner voice that constantly tells us how we could’ve done things better is a hallmark of perfectionism.

Therefore, it’s time for us to realize that loving yourself improves everything in your life - your relationships, your health and well-being, your ability to manifest your dreams, and your self-esteem. Loving and connecting with yourself is the key to being able to love and connect with others, and create loving relationships. “How you love yourself is how you teach others to love you.” Rupi Kaur

BIPOLAR CARE INDONESIA

an interview with Igi Oktamiasih, Founder of Bipolar Care Indonesia

The foundation Bipolar Care Indonesia was started on the 27th of May 2013 by 5 founders, two of whom are still active in the foundation today. We interviewed one of them, Ms. Igi Oktamiasih, to give us some insights on the topic of mental health. Bipolar Care Indonesia is a foundation set up to provide a community and support group for people with bipolar disorder. They wanted to support them, and give them a platform to share their stories and realize that they are not facing this alone. At the time when they were first creating the foundation, there were no other communities like it that the owners were familiar with. In 2019, Bipolar Care Indonesia was legally changed from an organization into a foundation.

Now, how does one deal with their mental health? Ms. Igi shares with us that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder around the same time they began the foundation. At that time she thought “what’s next?” and “what steps do I have to take?”. She decided to make a support system for herself, along with therapies to prevent relapses, in order to help herself and her mental health progress in a better way. Ms Igi says that improving your mental wellbeing is also very important, and a way to do that is self-love. Self-love is rather abstract; it is not only about treating yourself, but also about caring for your thoughts and feelings. Self-love is also important because if you don't value yourself, then you depend on others to value you. You begin to think of yourself as someone that needs to please everyone by fulfilling their expectations in order to be accepted. Practicing mindfulness is also a type of self-love. It is not only just by sitting and meditating, but it is also about focusing on what you do and your thoughts.

Self-love is not always being a positive thinker all the time. You have emotions, so you should accept yourself and forgive yourself. Meet your needs, such as proper sleep, proper food, proper exercise, and removing toxic people from your life. It is advised that If you think that you have a mental health issue, or are currently struggling with your mental health, to please reach out for help from someone you trust. Now that we know how to deal with our mental health, how do we support others that are currently struggling with theirs? Well, we become good listeners. Usually people who are struggling with mental health want to be heard and share their issues with another person, not to simply be advised. People tend to advise readily, but not listen very well. You shouldn't always question why they are doing certain things. Don't interpret what you think is going on with that person and their life. If you don't have proper education about mental health it is better to stay quiet, and just give them space for themselves.

the art of self love and appreciation What is self-love and is it crucial for today's youth? In this interview with Ms. Amalia Indah Permata M,Psi, Psychologist, a registered psychologist, we discuss self-love, its importance, and different ways we can show self-regard in healthy ways, especially during these difficult times. So what is self-love? According to Ms. Amalia, “Realising that there are things out of our control makes us understand that sometimes, failing is a normal thing and we should always treasure our efforts.” It is the state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological, and spiritual growth.

Article by Daniella Renatta Citra eunoia-16

Modern social media is structured in such a manner that we are compelled to compete with one another, or even with ourselves. We are always striving to meet the objectives that are not exactly relevant, and to always attempt to further ourselves to meet societal standards. “Overworking ourselves without giving ourselves a break or a treat is extremely unhealthy, as everyone needs time to reset and refresh.” Coping mechanisms are the strategies many often use in the face of stress and/or trauma to help manage painful or difficult emotions. They can help people adjust to stressful events while helping them maintain emotional well-being. Especially for younger generations, maintaining a school-life balance is a difficult task. That is why certain practices such as mindfulness, a healthy coping mechanism, and instances of relaxing activities may help relieve stress. Certain stigmas arising around social media in recent times such as romanticizing certain mental issues, and glorifying the struggles of going through a stressful and traumatic experience, have been made common on social media. This phenomenon, according to Ms. Amalia, should be prevented through education.

Sustain The Nation a youth organization, founded by Sharlene Budihardjo

socials : @sustainthenation Article by Kezia Adeline

Sharlene Budihardjo, an 11th grader from Santa Ursula is the founder of Sustain The Nation. But what exactly is this organisation? Let’s find out, shall we ? Sustain the Nation is a youth organization that raises awareness, opens conversations, and initiates change about matters surrounding sustainability to educate, inspire, and empower the nation. They focus on environmental, social, and economical sustainability. They currently have more than 30 members in their team, with content writers, illustrators, event organizers, social media managers, and public relation officers. According to Sharlene, learning to love oneself takes deliberate work, but is not out of the reach of any person. Having low self-esteem can be destructive, but accepting and loving ourselves is a necessity.

eunoia-20

Amidst the struggles, anxiety and moments where you question every assumption about yourself, it’s crucial to remember your past. Sharlene uses a simple metric to measure her self love: "2015 me would never be able to guess that I would be who I am right now". Sharlene knows that there is no need to perfectly perceive oneself before loving oneself. Everyone has flaws, and everyone deserves methods of self-improvement. Take methods of self-improvement as encouragement rather than obstacles. Sharlene personally thinks that building a youth organisation has helped her learn about making the world a better place.

eunoia-21

ACHIEVEMENTS : In 2021, Sustain the Nation has successfully launched several projects. Their first webinar “Being A Shoulder To Cry On” was held in February with more than 100 participants. In addition, Sustain the Nation also collected more than 500 books that were donated to a community library in Agats, Papua. They also held “Should We Cancel ‘Cancel Culture'” in July, which was a combination between a webinar with a moderated discussion with all the participants.

eunoia-22

Other than that, they also launched a content collaboration series called “A Look Through the Lense Of Sustainability” with 4 other youth organizations. In the past few months, Sustain the Nation also mobilized more than 50 volunteers to distribute food and raise awareness regarding food insecurity through our program, STN Against Hunger.

Lastly, their latest event was just held last month called “Building Your Future” Month, where they had a series of events over 3 consecutive weeks. They talked about choosing ideal majors, building our mindsets, and creating our personal branding.

WHAT'S UP WORLD " The amazing world of the instagramable and aesthetic Terrariums! "

ARTICLE BY

SHANE NATALIE THE

eunoia-24

A terrarium - ever wonder what that is? A terrarium is like an aquarium, but for plants instead of fish. It is made in just about any glass container. It is planted to look like a miniature garden or forest enclosed in its own little world. For example, you could plant only succulents (including cactus), because they need very little water Terrariums were founded in 1842 by Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward, an English doctor who also studied botany and entomology. He created the terrarium by accident and found out that it is a great way to keep plants alive in the midst of pollution. Terrariums were really popular at that time but they soon decreased in popularity. Terrariums clearly have a rich history. But what can explain their renewed popularity today? One obvious reason is that, for many people living in apartments without gardens, they are often the only way to exercise green fingers. If you've got a surface with a light socket, you can have a terrarium. How cool is that? In addition, you can make your own Terrarium with just a few materials!

eunoia-25

Terrariums not only give people a way to reconnect with nature, it also helps people relax and ease tension and anxiety. The act of tending a terrarium can entrain mindfulness, by putting one pebble on top of another and placing plants such as cactuses and tiny mosses. Also, terrariums have some sense of aesthetic. The therapeutic benefits of terrariums proved to be a particular attraction in lockdowns. "I saw a real influx in people wanting to get into horticulture and grow their green thumb," says Emma Terrell, from Ottawa, Canada, whose company, The Urban Botanists, offers kits and workshops on the creation of terrariums. "People saw it as a way to relax, unwind, get creative, and engage with that innate need within us to engage with nature."

eunoia-26

The psychological benefits of nature and gardening are the subject of ongoing research, but many studies already lend support to the idea – with mounting evidence that the mere presence of plants can reduce anxiety, and help to refresh the mind after a period of deep concentration. This is often reflected in subjective physiological measures, such as blood pressure or levels of the so-called "stress hormone", cortisol. Some have hypothesised that the specific geometry of vegetation – such as the repeating “fractal” patterns of a fern leaf - is particularly restful for the visual system, which evolved to be immersed in flora.

WHAT TO DO TO IMPROVE SELF-LOVE

One of the ways that you can learn self-love is by complimenting yourself and saying a few words of affirmation. Another activity that you can do is to take a break at regular intervals. Long stretches of work can give a lot of problems to your health. Sitting down in your chair for a long time without moving and in the wrong position can lead to back problems. Looking at the screen from a short distance for a long time can lead to eyesight loss. To avoid this situation, we have to give breaks to our important eyes. Let us do these things that are essential for our mental and health ; 20-20-20 rule: This exercise can help to rest your eyes during classes and when you are busy with your online games. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and you take that break by looking 20 feet away or more. Look out the window for 20 seconds, or alternatively just close your eyes and count to 20. That will relax the eye muscle that is spending all its time focusing up close and give it a breather, and then you can come back into it again.

Article by Shane Natalie The

You can find this information on the internet and you’ll find that this is one of the important ways you can rest your eyes. 2. Resting: Resting doesn’t necessarily mean sleeping. Yes, sleeping is one of the ways of resting, but if you want to rest properly, give yourself a break. Doing mindful activities such as breathing and listening to music can help you give yourself the break that your body needs. 3. Body scan: Scan your body by just sitting down in a room and relaxing. Whether you do it cross-legged or not depends on your preference and mood. Just sit down and start to feel what is inside your body. 4. Mindful seeing: See with your eyes, and this can help to rest your eyes too. 5. Mindful listening: Listening with your ears can give it a rest after a long time of hearing loud noises. Listening to music after a long day can help you relax. Just put up some uplifting tunes that will boost up your mood in minutes (or even seconds!).

WITH , ASRI YULIANA ASTUTI

Article by Delbar Rosana Ifra Zafira

Apa pendapat Asri tentang self-love?

The School Counselor with Ms Arianne, M.Psi, Psi

Who are school counselors? They are professional or licensed educators who implement guidance and counseling programs in school to increase the students chances of success. In our school, we have Ms Arianne as our beloved school counselor. To have a better understanding of what she does, we did an interview with her. When she was a secondary student at a public school, her school counselor not only did counselling, but also teaching and other work. So the counselor could not really focus on doing his/her actual job. Ms Arianne thus become motivated to be a school counselor and concentrate on doing that well. “I want to be a school counselor with a master's degree in psychology,” she said to herself. And now, here she is with her dream coming true.

eunoia-40

Article by Candice Christabel

Counseling for her is a great tool to help people. In the field of psychology, there are so many different practices and methods, and counseling is one of the most common methods that is used. Ms Arianne’s goal is to just simply help as many people as she can, especially in the educational field since we often look on the issues and problems that the young generation is facing. She feels grateful when doing her job that our generation is already so open about mental health issues. She believes that to overcome stress, everyone is different. From Ms Arianne’s perspective, she has a way to minimize her stress, but it won’t work with everyone else. Stress comes a lot from social media, so Ms Arriane has logged out from all of her social media accounts since they impacted her so much.

eunoia-41

“I’ve detoxed myself from Instagram, its already 2 months since I’ve signed in.” Knowing what we can control and what we can’t control could also help us to minimize our stress. When it comes to time management, Ms Arianne explained that we can’t completely balance both our work time and personal time. For her, balance means doing what she needs to do in her job, but also making time for her personal life. How she balances her life is also a priority. A top tip from Ms Arianne for those us who are facing difficult times is to talk to someone about the issue or problem, know what we want and what we need, and find help. We need to do what it works for us. And we should be kind to ourselves since in such times; it may seem a small thing for other people, but it’s a big war for us.
