14 . 17 . SEPTEMBER . 2023 MARSEILLE FRANCE
Co-organised
by

When thinking about this year's theme, we realised that it should resonate with the host city and its long history of exchanges, sharing of knowledge and mixing of cultures. The title, ILLUMINATIONS, refers to the general theme of education and, for us, creative music education.

For the European Jazz Conference 2023, after Tallinn and Sofia, we will travel to the shores of the Mediterranean, to the beautiful port city of Marseille, France We will literally be on a cliff where the sea meets the city, at the entrance to its old port, in the 19th century Palais du Pharo. We hope the sunshine and sea breeze will lift our spirits and ignite our minds for the conference sessions.

We want to discuss how music education can have a positive impact on society and how we, music professionals, can contribute to this process. We know that music education can be a powerful tool for engaging marginalised communities, but we are also aware that many of our structures are not as inclusive as we would like them to be. What is the future of formal music education? What is the role of non-formal education and talent development programmes in supporting the next generation of artists? How can we ensure that young 'off-stage' roles are given the skills and space they need to flourish? How do we remove the barriers that prevent diverse audiences from participating in our events? How do we reconcile this with the need to act in a more environmentally sustainable way?

Together, we will shine a light on these questions at the Conference. You are invited to illuminate this journey with us. See you from 14 to 17 September 2023 in Marseille!

KEYNOTE SPEECH: Nicole Mitchell (artist & educator, US): A Musical Village of Interdependence: Creative music as a platform for collaboration and problem solving________________________________Auditorium

Creative music is the exploration of unlimited possibilities in sound, but with its roots in jazz and improvisation, it is also a music grounded in community building. Its practice offers us a platform where openness allows for the coexistence of contrasting identities and ideas. Its practice offers us a place of play where we can create alternative worlds and new models for society. Creative music is a place of consciousness where we reach for optimism and can glimpse freedom. It is our vehicle for the future, a musical village of interdependence.

Six parallel DISCUSSION GROUPS on the Conference theme:

#1 - Non-academic education & talent development programmes: is there a recipe for success? Room 120, ground floor

Outside of formal education settings, grassroots and non-academic organisations are creating successful models and programmes that offer a holistic approach to artist development: creative, professional and personal. How can we provide the right conditions to enable these non-academic pathways to an artistic and professional career to thrive, thereby ensuring a bright, cutting-edge and diverse future artist base?

#2 - The future of music education: how should it be addressed?

________________________________________________________Room 50, ground floor

How does music education relate to our ever changing society and musical practices? As our societies are becoming more diverse, enriched by different cultures, is there an opportunity for music education to diversify its approach? Is there a way to make it more creative, cross-genre, inclusive and welcoming to a diverse group of young artists? Do our conservatories need to be conservative, or is there a more ambitious approach to embracing the challenges society and musical practices offer them?

Linda Bloemhard (Codarts, Association Européenne des Conservatoires, NL)

Fabrizio Cassol (artist, BE)

MODERATOR: Matti Nives (We Jazz, FI)

#3 - Succession & the next-generation of ‘off-stage’ roles: passing on the torch or blinded by the light? Room 76, ground floor

How can we create welcoming entry points for people from diverse backgrounds to enter the ‘off-stage’ music workforce (artistic directors, producers, communicators, talent developers, festival assistants)? How can we provide the best environment for lighting up future career paths in jazz and creative music? What role can collectives play, with their collaborative strength-in-numbers approach? What can we learn from ‘maverick freelancers’ who shape their career working on multiple projects and in lots of different contexts?

Judyth Babin (Manag'Art agency, FR)

Jan Ole Otnæs (EJN honorary member, NO)

MODERATOR: Sophie Blussé (Music Meeting, NL)

#4 - How do we transform our approaches to engage new and diverse audiences? Room 50bis, ground floor

Everyone in our festivals, clubs and concert halls should be embracing a proactive approach towards engaging communities who live in the places where we work. How can we actively and meaningfully involve them in our events and programming? What is the best way to invite diverse audiences to discover new music? When we present our music, are we creating invisible barriers that prevent some groups from discovering it? What are the most effective and inclusive approaches to diversifying our audiences?

#5 - How can we work towards more sustainable touring circuits in Europe?

Vaulted Gallery 3, ground floor

We want our music to thrive and develop internationally and artists to share their work across borders. To achieve this, while at the same time decreasing our carbon footprint, we need to work together to improve the way artists are touring. Sustainable touring is a solution to maintaining a flourishing international scene, while working towards a greener music ecosystem. How can we encourage programmers to work together to help artists organise sustainable tours? What are the benefits of cooperation and what are the economic and social implications of this way of touring? And what examples are there of good practice for sustainable touring in Europe?

Garance Amieux (Periscope / Better Live, FR)

Kjetil Mulelid (Constellation artist, NO)

Rosa Galbany (Taller de Músics / Jazz I Am, ES)

MODERATOR: Gwendolenn Sharp (The Green Room, FR)

#6 - Towards a fair practice charter for the creative music sector?

Room 36, ground floor

At our European Jazz Conference in Sofia in 2022, we started a collaborative process towards creating a common ‘values charter’ for our ecosystem where promoters, musicians, bookers, managers, labels, work towards a more sustainable relationship, according to the values we all cherish. In Marseille, we will continue the discussions and will identify some concrete steps for the development and the adoption of this potential new ‘manifesto’. The pandemic has highlighted the precarious nature of income for performing musicians, and for other roles in our sector. How can we help them to be better protected and the beneficiaries of fairer practices?

10:30 - 11:30 PANEL DEBATE: Everything is illuminated - How can we make music education more inclusive and, in doing so, contribute to a more inclusive society?

We are all teachers, and we are all students too. Through our actions, including the music we create and promote, we illuminate others and are illuminated by them in return. Education has an emancipatory role, it helps us to become more resilient and aware. Music has that same power, creating and experiencing music can be an empowering act. It seems only natural then that music education, especially for less represented communities, can make a positive change. Every new music project is a chance to learn something, to create some bridges and explore some uncharted territories. With our societies becoming more rich and diverse, and more in need of inclusion and fair representation, what can we learn from music projects that cross borders and connect different cultures? How can the formal education sector of conservatories and music schools learn from and contribute to these?

Fabrizio Cassol is a Belgian/Italian saxophonist, composer and music director. He is a shape-shifting musician, an adept of crossbreeding who never ceases to multiply exchanges with musicians from the four corners of the world, exploring improvised music, oral traditions and written musics in order to better play with the borders between genres.

His interest in non-European music started after a trip to the Aka Pygmies in Central Africa and expanded to Asia (especially India) and Africa where he worked with the Mali diva Oumou Sangaré, the Griot Baba Sissoko & the Black Machine, the Indian master of percussion U. My musical career as a Pop musician started in the early 80-ties when I was seventeen. Since then, my career in music and music education has been an ongoing journey where I have had many great opportunities to perform with wonderful musicians and bands.

After my professional career in pop music, I was accepted at the Rotterdam Conservatory to study Pop & Jazz. The eld of higher music education is always evolving and as educators we cannot stop evolving with it, we owe it to the next generation to keep making space for music and the arts in society. ‘Earth without Art is E..h...’.

Jazz, of course, is all about encounters. But above all, it's about surprise and poetry. The Poetic Ways quintet is a successful test that emerged from a surprising challenge: to make the voices of Celia Kameni, Anne Paceo, Raphaël Imbert, Pierre-François Blanchard and Pierre Fenichel work together for a new sonic, aesthetic, and poetic adventure. The challenge was accomplished during a live improvised concert on France Musique in November 2021 for the bicentennial of the Pierre Barbizet Conservatory in Marseille. The magic of the moment was recorded and captured the listeners' attention who were surprised to hear the works of Fauré, Ferré, Baudelaire, Verlaine and Nina Simone.

The Orchid Big Band is a modern large ensemble that is an emanation of the Parisian-Aquitaine jazz collective Déluge. The band draws inspiration from the great jazz orchestras of the jazz era, as well as from European art music (especially Stravinsky), world music, and even its American counterparts (Maria Schneider, Kenny Wheeler), up to today's music. This young and balanced formation brings together 18 musicians who are passionate about group playing and original music. Driven by the enthusiasm of its members, the band unleashes a rare energy in concert, from dreamlike landscapes to frenetic tuttis.

House of Echo was created in 2012 when pianist Enzo Carniel and guitarist

Marc-Antonio Perrio decided to create airy and improvised music that reconnects and reconciles us with true listening and time. In contrast to the hasty e ects and immediacy with which our impatient era compromises, their compositions are created and developed over time, suggesting subtle modulations of colours and tonalities, between melodic abstraction and allusive grooves, shimmering textures and sonic con icts, delineating a range of "soundscapes" with powerful dreamlike abilities.

Papanosh is a young quintet with a long history. A Very Big Lunch is the group's seventh album. Still as libertarian and inspired, Sébastien Palis (keyboards), Raphaël Quenehen (saxophones), Quentin Ghomari (trumpets), Thibault Cellier (double bass), and Jérémie Piazza (drums) embark on a new adventure: meeting Jim Harrison, American novelist and poet (1937-2016), who believed that writing and trout shing went well together. A Very Big Lunch is like an allegorical representation of "Le Cyclope" or rather what it has given birth to: stories, characters, and images.

FUR traverses vast landscapes, following a dangerous and winding path towards a utopian and magical place, but stops at night for social bonds and a shared hot co ee. The trio knows very well what it wants to say to you, but doesn't yet know how to do it, as decisions will be made along the way.

Louise Jallu says, 'If we pretend to bring something new, we must do something else. Take Piazzolla's music as if it were a standard and take it elsewhere.' Marion Rampal's album "Tissé" delicately answers THE question that has been beating in her heart until its last note: once detached from labels and borrowings, what singular folklore, sewn to the soul and close to the body, do we really own? From the very rst track "A volé", with its melody drawn in the air, its swaying Cajun rhythm and its text delicately moulded in French, Marion Rampal responds with subtle touches. She loves music to madness and has always kept it as close to the stars as to her heart. Her voice is poised, naked and trembling, her musical and poetic writing subtly creolized by the work of time and smoked by the re of experience: Marion Rampal makes us hear the sweet and erce, tender and untameable singing of an artist and a woman who, more than ever, from the unassailable heights where music lifts her, tells us: "No, you are not going to put me in a box like

Experience Marseille …experience it together!

Marseille Jazz des cinq continents appeared in the calendar of the Capital of Provence in 2000. It was nourished by the history of Marseille, its geography. It plunged to the roots of the city and its attraction to music, It drew strength from the local jazz scene, its artists, and a constant audience. The festival opened its doors to others and for 20 years it continued to weave links with the world and to orchestrate encounters.

Today, the city is changing. On the cultural level, it is developing a brand new vitality. Day after day, we want to put Jazz and the values it conveys at the heart of this dynamic.

We are very enthusiastic about hosting the European Jazz Conference 2023 and also very honoured to have been chosen to organise this irreplaceable annual meeting for this network. We could not imagine setting up this organisation, welcoming all the members and bringing together all the players in our ecosystem, being alone. This is why, from the moment we formulated the idea of organising the Conference in Marseille, we tried to bring people together. First it was the local institutions and Jazz operators in Marseille and its region, then the major actors of Jazz in France, the CNM and the AJC and of course the artists. In this way, we want to build an edition that will meet the expectations of the members of the network.

We perpetuate our action so that Jazz, by its ability to integrate impulses, emotions and diverse cultures, is a vector of exchange between peoples, between humans, between genres, between generations. Marseille Jazz des cinq continents is very proud to lead such an adventure: to bring a Jazz experience to life on the shores of the Mediterranean, in the second city of France, an ancient city where history is on edge.
