Theme This novel, which is a best seller, starts with the typical phrase “The wind blew a gypsy”. The book describes the adventure of Melios Kadras, a poor and orphan boy. In the village, where Melios lives, his master doesn’t allow him to go to school. A good-hearted teacher offers him free books so that he can learn how to read and write. When his master finds out that he is been having lessons, Melios has to go to the nearest city to attend High school. His only “friend” is his desire for learning.

Our opinion This book is educational and it refers to older times when education was not a public good. It is very interesting and the plot has historical references as well as funny elements. The book sends out the message is that education for all is very important for every human in our world. We have also seen this story as a play on stage and we recommend it to you!
