City Landmark Competition

Location: Pejaten, Jakarta | Site Area: 904.40 sqm Typology: Public Space | Period: Nov - Dec 2016 This is a competition to design a landmark in the center of Banjarmasin city that was the location of the old governor office building. This venue is intended to become a new landmark to attract more tourists to the city. THE PROBLEM
The is an old governor office already in the site which will be preserved as a heritage building. The site is near the Martapura river which has great potential to be integrated with the design, but a busy street separates the site with the river. In the larger context of Banjarmasin, the city lacks of attractive tourism venue, so it is a great potential to design something stunning for the city which will make the citizen proud of their hometown.
THE SOLUTION
My team and I propose a monumental design concept to construct a sleek tower rising from the water into the sky 80 meters high from the ground. The form symbolize the five historic rivers that formed this city in the begining. We design a viewing platform in the sky so the people will be able to see the city edges as the city grows. This venue will integrate the old governor office as a museum, an amphitheater for cultural performance, a culinary center, and probably the biggest green park in the city. It will be an amazing public space for the people of Banjarmasin.
