Winter clothing Choose the right cycling wardrobe and stay happy in the saddle through the cold weather

Our huge range of winter clothing will keep you comfortable whatever type of cycling you’re into… There’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes – or so the saying goes. You might disagree but what’s certain is that choosing the right clothing is vital for making cycling comfortable and enjoyable all year round, and these days there are plenty of excellent options to choose from. In winter, the challenge is to dress so you stay warm enough when you’re coasting downhill or waiting at the traffic lights, but don’t overheat as soon as you start putting the effort in. And it’s perfectly possible… Wear a good long-sleeved base layer to shift moisture away from your skin and then add a jersey on top to provide the insulation – ideally, something with vents or a front zip that you can open up on the climbs to let cool air in and humid air out. You might want a windproof or waterproof outer layer as well, depending on the conditions, to provide your first barrier of defence. Tights come in various different weights – you want something with a warm, fleecy backing for the cold weather while windproof/waterproof panels provide even more protection. Whatever you do, make sure you look after your hands and feet too. You can guarantee that if your extremities get cold the rest of your body will follow, so invest in well-padded gloves, winter shoes and maybe some waterproof socks too. And a thin hat that fits underneath your helmet is a godsend when the mercury drops close to freezing. It will protect your ears from the wind chill because frozen ears are no fun!

What to

wear Headband Thin enough to let you hear traffic but thick enough to take the bite out of a cold wind and keep your ears warm, a headband is a one of the most cost-effective clothing accessories to have for the winter months.

Thermal jacket Give your torso the protection it deserves. A good thermal jacket will often have a blend of windproof and soft fleece fabric to prevent wind chill and provide natural warmth. Ideally it should have a long back to provide lower back coverage when leaning forward in the saddle and a snug fit at the collar and cuffs to prevent draughts creeping in.

Winter clothing

Essential warm clothing for every cyclist’s wardrobe.

Under-helmet hat Often made from similar fabrics to the headband, the under-helmet hat features additional fabric to cover the top of the head, preventing additional heat loss in cold temperatures. As the name suggests it’s thin enough to fit comfortably under a helmet.

Long sleeve base layer A decent base layer will move moisture away from the skin which helps to keeps you comfortable on a cool day. In addition, some base layers are made from fabrics specifically designed for cold weather so have their own insulating properties too.

3/4 lengths (not shown) Even in the depths of a British winter there will be days when thermal tights are just too warm. A pair of 3/4 lengths will often provide sufficient leg coverage.

Winter gloves It’s essential to keep your fingers warm as you’ll need them to operate your brakes and gears. In addition to thermal fabric a decent winter glove will have a windproof or waterproof layer.

Shorts & knee/leg warmers An alternative to tights or 3/4 lengths you could wear a pair of shorts combined with either leg or knee warmers as this gives you maximum versatility for riding in variable temperatures. There are now winter-specific shorts made from thermal fabric.

Thermal tights A good pair of tights will keep your legs warm on cold days. Bib-tights have extra fabric covering your lower back and stomach. Available with or without padded inserts.

Over-shoes Designed to slip over the top of your normal cycling shoes a good pair of over-shoes will provide a waterproof and insulated layer for your feet and shoes.

Waterproof socks No one likes cycling with cold, wet feet. A pair of waterproof socks could be the solution. In addition to stopping rain and spray penetration they keep out any wind that passes into your shoes.

Thermal shoes Specifically designed for cold weather use, thermal shoes have a high ankle, weatherproof membrane, and thicker upper to help keep your feet dry and warm.

High power light system It seems there’s no stopping the advances in bike lighting at the moment. Super-bright LEDs use far less energy than the hot halogen bulbs they have replaced, meaning systems can now run brighter and for longer periods of time - excellent for long night rides! Still, it’s best not to put all your eggs in one basket. Having a small back-up light will help you get home if your main light fails on the trail.

Hydration pack Hydration packs have largely replaced water bottles in mountain biking because they enable riders to carry more water, they don’t jump off during high-speed descents and they often come with extra cargo space for all your other ride essentials.

Multi-tool Hopefully you’ll get through your night ride without any technical hiccups but Gremlins can strike at any time. Carrying a multi-tool helps keep you on the trail. Basic versions come with an assortment of allen keys and screwdrivers while higher specced tools can come equipped with chain tools, Torx wrenches and spoke keys - you can almost carry a pocket workshop with you!

Mini pump & spare tube Fixing a puncture in the dark isn’t much fun, realising you haven’t got a pump with you is even worse! Make sure a mini pump and spare tube (or 2) are some of the first items you pack into your bag. If your tyres are difficult to fit then a set of tyre levers will help.

commuting Being seen means being safe when you are riding in the dark

Before you know it the nights have closed in again for another year. Brighten up your bike – and yourself – for safer riding after dark... Blame the earth’s wonky axis. One day you’re riding back from the pub in the muggy dusk at about midnight, then seemingly the next it’s dark before you’ve even finished your lunch.

will notice you when you’re pulling out of side roads: SMIDSY (“Sorry mate I didn’t see you”) accidents at junctions are even more common in the darker months.

Even if you’ve been cycling for a while it’s easy to get caught out by the shortening days, and that first sheepish ride home without lights after a late finish at work is usually enough to remind you to get kitted out for the dark evenings ahead. But it’s much better to be prepared!

If your ride takes you on to unlit roads then pick a light that’s bright enough for you to see your way, or you could supplement a small blinker with a beefier rechargeable unit for the really dark bits.

Seasons come and go: you may be looking towards the new year but at Evans Cycles 2010 is already here... Next year’s bikes have hit the shops in force and this is great news on two counts. It gives you plenty of new, shiny stuff to gaze at – and buy – to take your mind off the disappearing daylight and chillier weather that winter brings. And, of course, great new 2010 bikes means great deals on 2009 bikes too. The sky (well, about £4,000) is the limit when you’re buying a mountain bike but look to spend at least £400 if you’re genuinely heading off road; that’ll buy you an aluminiumframed bike with a compact chainset, suspension fork and rigid frame. The cheaper bikes tend to be more suited to traffic free paths and gentle forest trails. As with all bikes, you pay more to get more: better forks, disc brakes, lighter frame, upgraded gears and transmission and rear suspension. Tailored for speed rather than comfort, road bikes are light and fast, and the only option if you’re thinking of doing any racing on tarmac. They start at around £500; and the more you pay the more carbon you’ll see: forks (definitely worth paying for) and seatposts first, then the frame and the bars. Everything else will get lighter too as you move up the ranges. If you’re looking for a bargain then be quick, there aren’t many 2009 models left! Hybrid bikes range from fast, light machines – basically a flat barred road bike – to heavier, comfier steeds with a relaxed position and big bump soaking tyres, and there’s everything in between. Prices start at about £250, but if the bike’s going to be a workhorse it’s worth seeking out lowmaintenance upgrades like hub gears and disc brakes.
