PUBLISHER’S NOTE Dear Readers, It is hard to imagine anything that is harder, been more fun, plus ultimately more satisfying, than completing the first five years of providing our readers with informative content presented in a positive light, helping to boost business, investment, tourism and the image of the Kingdom of Cambodia. Now we are planning for the next five years. This issue of Cambodia Insight is our 25th quarterly publication. It’s been, as the Navy promises, “not just a job, but an adventure”. I would like to say a big thank you to our many readers over the last five years, as you have proven again and again that you will visit an online publication. We really appreciate your attention, as well as your comments and suggestions we have received, with every one of them being read, and many ideas adopted. We are extremely grateful. A very big heartfelt thanks to our advertisers, because without you, none of this would have been possible. We have not charged our many readers and your generous support over the last five years has made this possible. We truly hope that your business has benefited from the attention your adverts garnered both locally and internationally. You will be interested to know that in order to reach an even larger reader audience, the magazine can now be found on www.magzter.com and PressReader, which opens the door to millions of additional readers worldwide.
Apsara Dancers
As we look to the future, having weathered the initial growing pains, we can now focus even more on producing the leading publication about Siem Reap and Cambodia. Now, every issue will contain a temple review, a featured guided tour, a hotel review, 2 cookbook recipes, restaurant and bar reviews, and an executive property will be highlighted. Also in future issues we will continue to spotlight the growing numbers of visitors and investors from Russia, the important role of investment from China and Korea, and relations with our neighbors Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. We will also feature information about Cambodian life, business, culture and especially responsible tourism. Most of all, we’ll continue to bring to our readers more of the amazing marvels of the Land of Wonders, our adopted home. As always, your readership, advertising support, and your comments, will help us make this the leading publication of its kind on the internet. We are truly very grateful. Sincerely,
Thank you to our contributors as well, you have supplied us with interesting – indeed fascinating, insights into this Land of Wonder and its warm, welcoming people. The quality of your work has shone brightly. We are grateful. The final thank you must go to our staff, who have worked tirelessly and without complaint under the pressures of deadlines. You have brought creativity to Cambodia Insight, along with a full measure of talent, hard work and good spirits.

Cambodia - Kingdom of Wonder
A rather shaky suspension bridge
Koh Kong
Koh Kong is the most southwestern province of Cambodia. It is one of the biggest provinces in the whole country with a long undeveloped coastline and a mountainous, forested and largely inaccessible interior, which embraces part of the Cardamom Mountains, the biggest coherent
rainforest of Southeast Asia. Its tourist attractions include abundant wildlife; big waterfalls and casinos on the border to Thailand, while an Export Processing Zone and new port facilities are being developed for international trade.

The province is a popular gateway to Cambodia from Hat Lek in southern Thailand, in part of the reasonably direct access to the beach town of Sihanoukville. While this was previously a gruelling journey by boat and pickup on rough bumpy roads using small ferries at river crossings, the Thai donation of new road infrastructure is improving access greatly.
One of the many beautiful beaches
The name means “Krong Island Province”. Its capital is Krong Koh Kong, which is located in the West of the province right next to the Thai border. The city is surrounded with a large forested area connected to the mainland by bridges
and ferries. It’s generally a quiet town, but there are many reasons to stay in Koh Kong for more than one night such as the nearby islands, rivers, tours into the nature and the buzzing nightlife.
Sunset on the coast
The people of Koh Kong speak mainly Khmer, and most speak some Thai as well. You can also find many Chinese and Vietnamese speakers as well as a lot of broken English. Your stay here will be economical as lodging, food and transportation is relatively cheap here. Please make this place a stop on your travels through S.E. Asia and you won’t be disappointed. Things to do in Koh Kong: Koh Kong is being developed right now and there are a lot of unexplored things to be explored. The toughest forests, rugged rivers, cardamom jungles and beautiful oceans speak for the beauty of Koh Kong. For foreign visitors, the most interesting and the most visited tourist sports are the casinos, waterfalls and the beaches. Some important things to do in Koh Kong: * Visit beaches and islands * Safari world at Koh Kong * Scuba diving events * Koh Kong divers * Beautiful Waterfalls * The casinos

Wat Bo Pagoda
Wat Bo
Wat Bo Pagoda, close to the Siem Reap River on the east side, is one of the oldest in Siem Reap and a peaceful place to escape and take a break from touring the major temple sites of nearby Angkor Wat . Immersing yourself in a culture sometimes requires getting away from the tourist honeypots. Wat Bo, which gives the area of town its name where a hub of backpacker accommodation can also be found, is a quiet pagoda 12
worth a stop if you’re interested in connecting more with Cambodia’s spiritual side.

JAN - MAR, 2016
The country may be Buddhist, but this 18th century pagoda is particularly notable for its detailed wall paintings portraying Reamker, the Cambodian version of one of the great Hindu epics, Ramayana. The mural montage of intricate Khmer art is painted finely on the walls. Though for some pieces time has evidently taken its toll, many
A quick bike tour can lead you around Siem Reap’s most prominent pagodas in an afternoon including Wat Damnak, Wat Thmei, Wat Preah Enkosei and Wat Preah Prom Rath. As with all pagodas, they tend to be busiest around religious holidays and prayer times, which may involve an early rise if you want to catch what’s going on.
are still well preserved. That said, not all can be viewed easily and not just because it’s gloomy inside, but because you’d need to be on tall stilts to seeway up that high. The patchwork of paintings is especially interesting here as it also depicts daily life and shows how scenes such as market shopping has little changed over the passage of time. You will also spot foreigners painted in the some hundred odd scenes, such as a row of French soldiers – there are some eyebrow raising outfits to be seen, as well as customs such as smoking what are now labeled as suspect substance.
Though Wat Bo is not a significant site in Siem Reap with the world wonders of Angkor just up the road, it is a pleasant enough diversion. For those with an interest in Khmer art a private puppet show performed here will give a wonderful glimpse into traditional art forms.
Scenes from the past
Wat Bo is free to visit and you need only allow a few minutes. Handily there is usually someone around to let you in should you find it closed.

Bon Om Tuk, The Cambodian Water Festival The Cambodian Water Festival is celebrated in November and marks a reversal of the flow of the Tonle Sap River. Every town and province joins in with the festival but the biggest celebrations take place in Phnom Penh with boat racing along the Sisowath Quay. For three days, workers from every province join with the city’s residents to celebrate by night and day. The festival lasts com-

Angkor National Museum The Legend Revealed The Angkor National Museum is the most important museum dedicated to the Angkor civilization in Cambodia and Asia. It is located in Siem Riep City, on the exclusive Charles de Gaulle Avenue, to the north of the National Road.
Lintel Style: Banteay Srei Date : 10th Century Display in Gallery C
Its collection, exhibited in eight galleries (the Exclusive Gallery and the other ones identified from A to G), numbers several masterpieces of theAngkor temples and it is the most complete representation of the culture, history and archeology of the Golden Age of Cambodia. The Charles de Gaulle Avenue is not far from the temples themselves (about two kilometers from downtown). The facade maintains the harmony of the unique Angkorian architecture. Comparable to any modern museum in the world, it has a fast ticketing service system (and it is possible to book online), a Guide Map and Audio Tour Set (personal translation device) with eight languages (Khmer, English, German, Korean, Japanese, French, Chinese and Thai.) It is a highly recommended place to complete visits to the temples. The combination of modern technologies and multimedia presentations introduces the visitor into the magic of the Angkor world.
The Museum Mall
The Museum covers 20 thousand square meters (65,616 sq. feet) surrounded with the traditional Cambodian gardens and the exclusivity of the northern area of Siem Riep City. The Museum is the product of a joint effort of the Royal Ministry of Culture and Fine Art, the APSARA Authority and the Museum Co., Ltd. on a 30 year concession period. No doubt, it is a world class museum dedicated to the preservation of the Khmer artifacts, collections and restorations of the fascinating Angkor Civilization. The Angkor National Museum is unique in Cambodia. It has its own style and its full inspiration in the ancient glorious time of the Khmer Empire, just at the doors of the temples. by A. Rodas

Reptiles of Cambodia
Green Sea Turtle
The Siamese crocodile is a freshwater crocodile native to Indonesia, Brunei, East Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam. The species is critically endangered and already gone from many regions. The Siamese crocodile is a small, freshwater crocodilian, with a relatively broad, smooth snout and an elevated, bony crest behind each eye. Overall, it is an olive-green colour, with some variation to dark-green. Young specimens measure 1.2–1.5 m (3.9–4.9 ft) and weigh 6–12 kg (13–26 lb), growing up to 2.1 m (6.9 ft) and a weight of 40–70 kg (88–154 lb) as an adult. The largest female specimens can measure 3.2 m (10 ft) and weight 150 kg 26
(330 lb) Large male specimens can reach 4 m (13 ft) and 350 kg (770 lb) in weight. Most adults do not exceed 3 m (10 ft) in length, although hybrids in captivity can grow much larger. The historic range of the Siamese crocodile included most of Southeast Asia. This species is now extinct in the wild or nearly extinct from most countries except Cambodia. Formerly it was found in Cambodia, Indonesia (Borneo and possibly Java), Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, and Burma. Siamese crocodiles occur in a wide range of freshwater habitats, including slow-moving riv-

ers and streams, lakes, seasonal oxbow lakes, marshes and swamplands. It is one of the most endangered crocodiles in the wild, although it is extensively bred in captivity. The Burmese python is one of the five largest species of snakes in the world (about the third-largest as measured either by length or weight). It is native to a large variation of tropic and subtropic areas of South and Southeast Asia.
These pythons are excellent swimmers and need a permanent source of water. They can be found in grasslands, marshes, swamps, rocky foothills, woodlands, river valleys, and jungles with open clearings. They are good climbers and have prehensile tails. Burmese pythons are mainly nocturnal rainforest dwellers. When young, they are equally at home on the ground and in trees, but as they gain girth, they tend to restrict most of their movements to the ground. They are also excellent swimmers, being able to stay submerged for half an hour.

In some countries, turtles and their eggs are hunted for food. Pollution indirectly harms turtles at both population and individual scales. Many turtles die caught in fishing nets. Also, real estate development often causes habitat loss by eliminating nesting beaches. Adult green sea turtles mostly eat marine plant life such as kelp and algae, while juveniles have a more carnivorous diet Newly hatched Green Sea Turtle
This sea turtle’s dorsoventrally flattened body is covered by a large, teardrop-shaped carapace; it has a pair of large, paddle-like flippers. It is usually lightly colored, although in the eastern Pacific populations parts of the carapace can be almost black. Unlike other members of its family, such as the hawksbill sea turtle, The Green Sea Turele is mostly herbivorous. The adults usually inhabit shallow lagoons, feeding mostly on various abundant species of seagrasses.
The golden flying snake is found in both South and Southeast Asia. It is very unusual in that it is capable of a type of gliding flight. It is also rearfanged. The snake’s striking looks and capability of gliding make it a popular choice for captivity around the world.
Like other sea turtles, green sea turtles migrate long distances between feeding grounds and hatching beaches. Many islands worldwide are known as Turtle Island due to green sea turtles nesting on their beaches. Females crawl out on beach28

Chrysopelea ornata is usually green in color, with black cross-hatching and yellow or gold colored accents. The body, though slender, is far less so than in other tree snakes. It has a flattened head with constricted neck, a blunt nose and large eyes with round pupils.
They tend to be nervous, fast-moving snakes, and will attempt to flee if disturbed, but will not generally hesitate to bite if handled. They are mildly venomous, but the venom is not considered to be dangerous to humans. It is intended to assist in subduing fast moving, arboreal prey. C. ornata takes small arboreal prey, such as lizards, bats and small rodents. Chrysopelea ornata, like others of its genus, glides or parachutes. This is presumably done to cover distances faster, to escape predators, to catch prey, or to move around in forests. Flying snakes usually parachute from tree to tree, but sometimes launch themselves from trees onto the ground. They have been known to cross as much as 100m.
Golden Flying Snake in flight
This snake ranges from 11.5 to 130 cm (0.38 to 4.27 ft) long. Maturity is reached at about 1 m (3.3 ft) in length. The tail is about one-fourth of the total length. Chrysopelea ornata is diurnal and arboreal. The snake’s gliding ability, while not as impressive as that of the paradise flying snake (C. paradisi), still makes it capable of moving from tree to tree with relative ease. These snakes are excellent climbers, being able move across even the smallest of branches and even straight up trees with few branches by using the edges of rough bark. They are frequently seen moving up a coconut palm, or up vertical rock faces in graceful curves, gripping the somewhat uneven surfaces with their impressive scales.
The false gharial also known as the Malayan gharial and Sunda gharial is a freshwater crocodilian with a very thin and elongated snout. It is listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN, as the population is estimated at less than 2,500 mature individuals. The false gharial has one of the slimmer snouts of any living crocodilian, perhaps comparable to the slender-snouted crocodile and the freshwater crocodile in the extent of slenderness, only that of the gharial is noticeably more slim. The false gharial is a large crocodilian, measuring only slightly smaller than the gharial. Three mature males kept in captivity measured 3.6 to 3.9 m (11 ft 10 in to 12 ft 10 in) and weighed 190 to 210 kg (420 to 460 lb), while a female measured 3.27 m (10 ft 9 in) and weighed 93 kg (205 lb). In some cases, males can reportedly grow to as much as 5 m (16 ft) in length. Females have been recorded at lengths of up to 4 m (13 ft 1 in) and

False Gharial
males have been confirmed at lengths of up to 5 m (16 ft 5 in). The false gharial apparently has the largest skull of any extant crocodilian, undoubtedly aided by the great length of the slender snout. Out of the eight longest crocodilian skulls from existing species that could be found in museums around the world, six of these belonged to false gharials. The longest crocodilian skull was of this species and measured 84 cm (33 in) in length, with a mandibular length of 104 cm (41 in). Most of the owners of these enormous skulls surprisingly had no measured (or even ancedotedly claimed) total measurements but based on the known skull-to-total length ratio for the species, they would measure approximately 5.5 to 6.1 m (18 ft 1 in to 20 ft 0 in) in length. At the end of 2008, a 4-m female false gharial attacked and ate a fisherman in central Kalimantan; his remains were found in the gharial’s stomach. This was the first verified fatal human attack by a false gharial. However, by 2012, at least two more verified fatal attacks on humans by false gharial had occurred indicating perhaps an increase of human-false gharial conflict possibly correlated to the decline of habitat, habitat quality and natural prey numbers. 30
False gharials are mound-nesters. Females lay small clutches of 13 to 35 eggs per nest, and appear to produce the largest eggs of extant crocodilians. Sexual maturity in females appears to be attained around 2.5 to 3 m (8.2 to 9.8 ft), which is large compared to other crocodilians. It is not known when they breed in the wild or when the nesting season is. Once the eggs are laid, and construction of the mound is completed, the female abandons her nest. Unlike most other crocodilians, the young receive no parental care and are at risk of being eaten by predators, such as mongooses, tigers, leopards, civets, and wild dogs. The young hatch after 90 days and are left to fend for themselves. The false gharial is threatened with extinction throughout most of its range due to the drainage of its freshwater swamplands and clearance of surrounding rainforests. The species is also hunted frequently for its skin and meat, and the eggs are often harvested for human consumption.

Temple Tour
Stairs leading up the front of Pre Rup
Pre Rup Pre Rup is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built as the state temple of Khmer king Rajendravarman and dedicated in 961 or early 962. It is a temple mountain of combined brick, laterite and sandstone construction. The temple’s name is a comparatively modern one meaning “turn the body”. This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the ashes of the body being ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed. Some archaeologists believe that the large vat located at the base of the east stairway to the central area was used at cremations. ‘A work of great dignity and impeccable proportions’, wrote Mauize of Prerup in his guidebook which came out in 1963. 38
Pre Rup is located at northeast of Srah Srang and 500 meters (1,640 feet) south of the south end of the East Baray. An entrance and exit the monument from the east entrance. To climb to the upper terrace use the east stairway; it is slightly less steep than the others. Tip: Because the temple is built entirely of brick and laterite, the warm tones of these materials are best are seen early in the morning or when the sun is setting. There are two views from the top terrace: the first looking east towards Phnom Bok and the mountain chain of Phnom Kulen; and the second looking west where the towers of Angkor Wat can be distinguished on the far horizon.

Background The boldness of the architectural design of Pre Rup is superb and give the temple fine balance, scale and proportion. The temple is almost identical in style to the East Mebon, although it was built several yeas later. It is the last real ‘temple-mountain‘. Pre Rup was called the ‘City of the East‘ by Philippe Stern, a Frenchman who previously worked on the site.
The site Pre Rup is aligned on a northsouth axis with the East Mebon temple, which is located on what was an artificial island in the baray. The East Mebon was also a creation of the reign of Rajendravarman. Pre Rup’s extensive laterite and brick give it a pleasing reddish tone that is heightened by early morning and late afternoon sunlight. The temple has a square lay-out and two perimeter walls. The outer enclosure is a platform bounded by a laterite wall, 117 meters N-S by 127 meters E-W.

A laterite causeway gives entry from the east; unfortunately, a modern road cuts across it. The four external gopuras are cross-shaped, having a central brick section (consisting of three rooms flanked by two independent passageways), and a sandstone vestibule on both sides. To either side inside the eastern gate is a group of three towers aligned north to south. One of the towers appears to have never been built or to have been dismantled later, however they are later additions, probably by Jayavarman V. Further ahead, through another gate, libraries lie to either side of the walkway on the second platform. Just before the entrance there is a stone “cistern”, but scholars believe it was a basement for a Nandi bronze statue rather than being used for some of their cremation ceremonies. There is also a series of long distinct galleries running along each side, a distinctive feature of 10th century archi-

rises in three steep tiers a dozen metres in height to a 35 m square platform at the summit. The lowest tier is symmetrically surrounded by 12 small shrines. At the top, five towers are arranged in a quincunx, one at each corner of the square and
On the left and right sides of the east entry tower of the second enclosure there are libraries with high towers. They sheltered carved stones with motifs of the nine planets and the seven ascetics. In the center there is a vat between two rows of sandstone pillars. Glaize suggested that this might have been, rather than a sarcophagus, a base for a wooden building or for a statue of Nandi, the sacred bull, the mount of Siva to whom the temple was dedicated long ago. The final squared pyramid, measuring 50 m at its base, 40

one in the center. Deities carved as bas-reliefs stand guard at either side of the central tower’s eastern door. All of the other doors are false. The southwest tower once contained a statue of Lakshmi, the northwest tower a statue of Uma, the southeast tower a statue of Vishnu and the northeast tower a statue of Shiva. The last one has an inscription on doorjambs that dates from Jayavarman VI and is the only proof of his reign at Angkor.
History
Pre Rup was dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, and it is probably located on a former shivaite ashram, built by Yasovarman I in the previous century. Perhaps it was standing at the centre of a new capital city built by Rajendravarman, with the southern dike of East Baray as northern city limit, but nothing of the dwellings survived and this “eastern city hypothesis” by Philippe Stern was never confirmed by archeologists.
