T

he world is a different place now. As I sit in the new office of Evanston Magazines Inc., I know that something feels different in the City of Evanston and I hope - the world.

Today marks the times after George Floyd was murdered by a team of rogue villains wearing the badge of officers. For those living under a rock or reading this in the future, the story is one of tragedy and caused a global reaction. No one, not even George Floyd knew that on May 26, 2020 he would be killed. Police corruption is a pandemic of its own in America. Too many times officers would abuse the privilege of law enforcement by killing the unarmed man. That abuse of power being tragic in its own right was heightened by the “way” George Floyd was assassinated. The degree of callousness in the officer as he kneels on the citizens neck was in a way that could only be taught and carried out as a purposeful murderous method. The video was too much for me to watch. The method seems to be something taught in some Nazi internment camp or some death factory. Described as having “a measured weight on the veins of the neck”. This method included a deliberate weight distribution on the throat factoring in “time” (8:48) . In addition to the knee to his neck the hands of the officer seemed placed in his pockets for maximum damage. What stuck the people so, was the fact that George Floyd begged for his life for 8 minutes and 48 seconds per the video taken by witnessing citizens. The begging was recorded and included George Floyd mentioning his dead mother. I think that mentioning of his mother was the final straw and manifested the anger of all the spirits of mothers, dead and alive. The mothers were now involved and they were pissed. There is always something magical in the soul of a mother that is manifested when “protection” is needed. Mothers have been reported to have lifted beyond capacity to protect. The protests happened as a result of this and spawned mothers in every corner of this earth to react. I’ve seen video of protesters in France, Iran and Germany. The WORLD says, “NO more”. This issue represents a world trying to cope with multiple pandemics, while survival has slowly shown the resilience of our fair city. In this issue of Evanston Magazine we submit to Iour knowledge on how to keep fit through Dr. Sheetal’s article (Pg 8). We show further resistance in noting that CoVID-19 further peels back the layers of the racial inequities of America. The article stating Black Folk are dying at a rate higher than others. (Pg 20) We highlight the surviving restaurants of Evanston. The restaurant sector was one of the hardest hit sectors of America. Then there is the devastating news all Evanstonian’s never thought we would face. The death of our BBQ KING - Hecky Powell. Hecky’s restaurant was an institution in Evanston for 40 years. This pandemic took him from us and we will never be the same. Evanston Magazine was blessed to have a great relationship with his best friend Dick Peach. Dick Peach had the distinction of sharing the title of Unofficial Mayor of Evanston with Hecky. The cover story is an account of their friendship. The depth of that friendship has historically been a human representation of “What Evanston is”. Evanston is a City leading the country in race relations through mutual respect and friendship. RIP HECKY POWELL this issue is dedicated to making y\sure your efforts are not over shadowed.

Alfa Romeo: Stelvio Quadrifoglio

T

he new 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the fastest Alfa Romeo model on the road, as it can go from 0-to-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 176 miles per hour. Right behind it is the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio, which has a top speed of 191 miles per hour and can go from 0-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds. Unsurprisingly, the engine is a straightforward transplant from the Giulia Quadrifoglio. It’s the 2.9-litre twin-turbo with 503bhp and 443lb ft of torque. Peak power comes in at 6500rpm, but the turbocharged torque is on tap between 2500 and 5000rpm.

That gives it plenty of pace, you’ll be pleased to hear: top speed is a distinctly un-SUV-like 176mph, while 62mph comes about in just 3.8 seconds from a standstill thanks to the obvious traction gains of fourwheel drive. That, you may have noticed, is a tenth faster than the lighter Giulia Normally the car’s Q4 four-wheel drive system directs all of its power to the rear axle, which is to say the correct one, but to maintain stability and traction it can send up to 50 per cent to the front wheels. It’s a live, active system that switches power forward only when needed. This hot Stelvio gets Active Torque Vectoring as

standard. Two electronically-controlled clutches in the rear differential control torque flow to each wheel, letting the car feed the outer wheel more at the limit, tightening the car’s line and ramping-up corner speed to the point where your face might actually come off.

Helping you with all that handling malarkey is ‘perfect’ weight distribution across the two axles. The engine and transmission are mounted as far back as possible, spreading the Quadrifoglio’s not inconsiderable 1830kg kerb weight evenly front to back. Alfa’s patented ‘fourand-a-half-link’ rear suspension helps keep things tidy in the twisties, too. Alfa Romeo, to its eternal credit, listened to the customers and the critics. The only real changes to the 2020 Giulia were laser-focused on addressing those complaints. We have an in-depth review of the updated interior for you to peruse, but suffice to say, they fixed what needed fixing. The infotainment system is updated with all-new and substantially improved software. The cheap-feeling rotary controller that went with it has been replaced with a piece that feels as hefty as the price tag commands, and now you can just touch the screen if you’d prefer. The team also carved out some space on the center console for more places to stash your stuff and added an optional wireless phone charger. The shifter is new, as well; it’s now both easier to use and

he first thing observed is the luster or sheen which indicates that the cigar is quality. In order to enjoy this cigar I dipped it in my favorite whiskey and gave it a good twist so some of the sweet liquor rubs onto it. With a strong draw I found a very smooth and lightly spicy flavor with a note of whiskey. When I pinch/ squeeze the cigar I discovered that it has no weak spots. Wrapper offered nice flavor and aroma. Smoke picked up in spiciness after the first inch. The cigar had a little note of peppery spice on the finish. The flavors started to bloom around the 1/2 way mark. Peppery notes inched-up a bit, while the nutmeg flavor remained constant. The smoke was very consistent. Some notes of espresso leaked-in, but this was primarily a very rich-tasting smoke with dark, spicy tobacco flavors. Aroma: Earthy and relaxing and nutty Burn / Ash Quality: Inconsistent at first, but fell into line at about the 3½-inch mark. Ash was granular and a bit loose but stood up to the flame and never loss glow.

discovered this delectable spirit by chance. The actual sales man was set up in the liqour store of my favorite area. He explained the price and the style. I purchased it and will now review it for the Evanston Magazine readers.

The spirit has a very sweet smell, and I can detect the usual vanilla and caramel flavors in the mix. The biggest difference to me is an smooth nature filled spicy smell, almost like a oatmeal cookie taste. Peppery on the nose with notes of fruit, honey, caramel and vanilla. Strong and warm in the first sip, letting in oak, caramel and honey. Rye is noticeable and tasty, but in the back seat It’s a darn good spirit, and on its own there’s some peppery complexity that makes me really happy. But while I’d normally expect the ice to drop the sweeter and softer tones, instead the peppery kick is what disappears. That’s all details, though. It’s still a delicious spirit that is competitive in price and quality with Bulleit Bourbon. And in that battle the fact that it’s actually sourced, distilled, and bottled in Texas makes it a winner in my book.

Balance Of Flavors: Very good sweet tobacco and Nutmeg Consistency: Very good. Retrohale: Very smooth and lightly spicy with a note of whiskey.

Golden RULES by Heather S. Bormann

S

ilver and gold, silver and gold... for years and years, there has been silver and gold. But now, we have rose gold, green gold, grey gold, black rhodium, and rhodium silver in the mix along with the white golds, platinums and yellow gold options in this jewelry world. So what to make of it all? Are these trends, and if so, what does that mean? What happens if I buy a trendy piece of fine jewelry? Is that a bad thing? As jewelry is worn, some metal color treatments hold up better than others. Jewelry pieces that require the most care and maintenance are the metals that are plated to achieve their look. White gold, rhodium silver and pieces layered in black rhodium are plated, and will need to be refinished if they are worn all the time. Worn daily, rings and bracelets get the most wear and tear, and require a little more consistent cleaning to remain bright and shiny. Fashionable jewelry that is mixed in your wardrobe is a great way to spice up your look. Colored metal is here to add dimensions never seen before. Rose gold is the “newest” metal has come into fashion. The newest trend currently enjoys the spotlight on the runway. The Rose colored metal flourishes due to it’s warm and sexy tone. If the coppery hues of rose gold are favorable to your skin tone, and you enjoy the look of it, do not worry about it being a “trend”. If you’re not sure and you hesitate about the trendy factor, it is probably not the best metal choice for you. The classics will always serve the fearful better. Rose gold is only for the forward thinking trendsetters. What is green gold and gray gold? Gold can take on a broad spectrum of shades and tones depending on the metals that are alloyed in, and green and gray gold are perfect examples of how much these ingredients can alter the color. Green gold is a lighter, brighter shade of yellow gold than the traditional orange-yellow tone that is commonly seen, and gray gold has a cool, smoky-brown tint to it. These options are less common, but very stable, as they are not plated in anything to give them their finish. Green gold and grey gold are perfect for anything as classic as a wedding band or as edgy as as a long, multi-layered chain. The key to all of this is simple. Buy what you LOVE. Wear what makes YOU happy. The jewelry that you own and wear becomes part of your story for the person you pass it on to. If you truly love it, go for it, and let it become your statement, not simply a trend. 6

ARE

RELATIONSHIPS

YOU GIVING OFF THE RIGHT FIRST IMPRESSION?

I

By Damona Hoffman t’s surprising that someone can discern a strong sense of who Iare with a first impression. Even more surprising, they can pick up on some of the most intimate details of your past:

Am I compensating for something? Do I have some lingering emotional scars? Am I looking for love? So what does your first impression say about you? According to an NYU study, Ihave only seven seconds before the person across from Imakes up their mind about who Iare seven seconds to get someone to ask for your number, or be offered the job, or close the deal. only seven seconds. Now, Iknow me as a dating expert, but I actually started out as a casting director. And in my work, I saw tons of actors who were talented, but couldn’t book apart because they didn’t know who they truly were. What if Melissa McCarthy thought she was a Jenny McCarthy? Or if Taylor Swift was trying to be Beyonce?

I have 7 seconds to make the right first impression. It takes 7 seconds for someone to decide whether Iare a right fit… or not.

The first time I became aware of this principle “of self awareness” was during a theater class in college. Yes, I was a nerdy theater major. We did an exercise that was designed to teach us about our essence, which is basically just a fancy theater term for the way that Ipresent to others physically and emotionally. The way that people perceive Ithe minute Iwalk in the room so We walked around the theater waiting for the teacher to call out a student’s name. When that name was said, we were supposed to embody that person’s essence and express how we perceived their energy. And I thought I was doing a great job of hiding away the broken misfit inside and parading her around the mask of a discriminating artist. But in an instant, they had all seen behind it when everyone in my class did Dimona, with crossed arms and that look, I had to acknowledge what they were seeing. Who was this critical, uptight girl in black? Was that who I had become? ( Continued on Evanstonmagazine.net) Late Summer | EvanstonMagazine.net

RICHARD FISHER

AUTOBARN

Evanstons Richard Fisher steps up during the Covid-19 Pandemic

T

here’s a formula that people can follow to know that they’re on the right side of History. In a nutshell, the core belief is “do what is just, be fair and be kind”. Kindness is something we don’t talk about much in business. Honorably, the first phrases spoken to me from Richard Fisher, in starting this interview were of him reacting with kindness toward his fellow Evanstonians. He is “a regular guy”, he also owns the Autobarn group. The Autobarn group is an important part of the Evanston landscape. It’s not just a car dealership its a symbol to the person driving toward Evanston’s Downtown (via Chicago ave). The typical Evanston resident refers to it as a symbol of being “home”.

12

EvanstonMagazine.net

History of Autobarn In 1992 Richard Fisher bought a car dealership from a Volkswagen dealer. He later added Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Nissan, and Mazda brands to the lot. As a person who’s been in the Evanston area since the 80s, I’ve been able to see many of the contributions of the Autobarn and Richard Fisher. His quiet commercial and philanthropic leadership is absolutely an asset to the city because he has been very generous. Since 1992 Autobarn has maintained a great relationship with the city. In fact, Richard informed methe service center at Howard and Kedzie will be the new anchor for dual campuses. The public is thrilled to welcome

the new campus and the expansion of the Autobarn group. The Autobarn has been stellar in how the company has coped with the Covid-19 pandemic constructively. Richard states that after the governor proclaimed car dealerships as an essential business environment, the Autobarn took a cautious approach in re-opening. They began with a small and cautious skeleton crew staff. There were important restrictions including a shortened workday. In planning, Autobarn leadership took the advice of the CDC by implementing a shield in front of every service desk, cashier, and every place where people have to stand. The creative director at Estudiotres.com Michael Newman designed a very tasteful campaign “thanking” visiting people for wearing their masks. A campaign designed to help visitors feel comfortable no matter their politics. The true goal of the campaign was to keep them safe responsibly. He is often teased jokingly by the mechanics and miscellaneous staff members. They call him “the mask police”. As the owner who is responsible for missteps, he tries to enforce his mandatory full mask request. Richard states, “if the mask is only over their mouth and not their nose I will mention that if you’re not going to wear the full mask you’re exposing everyone around Ito possible contamination.” Not wearing the mask correctly shows a lack of support and compassion for the health of others. Staying Clean The procedure that Autobarn meticulously follows includes spraying the cars inside and in relevant outside places as soon as it arrives. The car is also sprayed with a disinfectant periodically during servicing and then meticulously sprayed right after the car is serviced and during the time that it’s presented back to its original owner. Proud but cautiously Richard mentions that as today’s date passes Autobarn and its procedures have successfully thwarted having a case of Covid-19. Superstitiously Richard Fisher knocks on wood

Ann Sickton and States “so far we’ve been lucky not to have any cases”. Besides caring for the staff Richard Fisher’s compassion reaches further than Autobarn employees. In Evanston, he’s a philanthropic giant. He helps the residents of Evanston area by assisting in any way he can. Compassionate Service Toward The Community He has been there for Evanston. Richard Fisher donated space to Evanston woman magazine when most needed. Spring 2019 Evanston woman placed a fashion show on the upper level of the Mazda showroom, after searching for space. That selfless act- Richard Fisher’s donation gave the city “a great event” said life long Evanstonian Jennifer Arrington. This fashion show helped insulate local stores against economic tragedy by raising awareness. The event also lifted the spirits of many. Businesses felt Late Summer | EvanstonMagazine.net

good because they were able to display new designer clothes. While the spirits of local housewives who are Evanston Woman readers modeled the clothes. That donation helped the retail sector. Specifically stores we love like Ten Thousand Villages andand Gracie’s Gracie’swho who participated. Villages participated. The Spark Fundraiser The Center for Independent futures developed an event named “SPARK” it was a fundraiser. Spark is a night of cocktails, dinner, and dancing centered around an auction. As a participant in SPARK not only do Iget a tasty dinner plus drinks and dancing but Iget to personally witness the impact of the Center for Independent futures programming. Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions by the governor were laid out and directly interfered with the progress of Spark so an alternative was created. The alternative was the Drive-Thru event. Drive-Thru The Drive-Thru event was designed to maintain distance and to raise funds for The Center for Independent Futures. The participants would purchase a plate of dinner over the Internet. Then they would drive to pick that dinner up on the Autobarn lot. The event was catered and attended by many, including some of the benefactors who participated in the program. People like Andrew Sharp and Preston Jones (pictured top right ) both volunteers who were more than happy to converse. The event made a mandatory attempt to maintain a respectable and friendly distance during this event. So thankful were the executives of The Center for Independent futures the director gave a special message to Richard Fisher. Ann Sickton A personal “Thank You” message from the executive director of Center for Independent Futures. Ann Sickton states that in the past there was a belief that if Ihad an intellectual disability Icould not live a full life especially in a way where Ias the individual affected could follow your hopes and dreams. Iwould be kept at home with people who would watch over you. That’s really not humane to people with disabilities. They want the same rights as people who don’t have disabilities. She goes on to state that with just a little bit of help the people who participate in the center go from someone who is fully dependent and unproductive in the society to a valuable productive part of the community. Mrs. Sickton Expresses “Thankfulness” for the contributions of the Autobarn. Without those acts of philanthropic courage from Richard Fisher, those events would not have been 14

WELLNESS

by Karen Kopan

That Time I was the Daughter

I thought it was odd that my Mom would be calling me on a Friday night after 10:00pm. Especially since I was out of town on a retreat, quite a bit north of Chicago near the Wisconsin border. I remember my clothing still smelled like the beach campfire when I got back to my room to shower. That’s when the call came. “Karen, Dad collapsed on the floor in the kitchen, here, talk to the fireman…”.

My Mom handed the phone to the paramedic that helped revive my Dad. I remember hearing “down for at least 12 minutes” and “we’re doing everything we can” and “we’ll take her with us to the hospital”. I can’t describe the emotions I felt when I arrived in the Emergency Department and found my Mom sitting all alone with a dazed look on her face, staring at the floor. Nor can I describe the emotions I felt as I slowly walked up to my Dad’s cart, my heart racing. He didn’t open his eyes. He didn’t move, except for his chest rising and falling with the ventilator breaths and he hadn’t received any sedation or narcotics. Dad? Dad, can Iopen your eyes? Dad, can Ihear me? I knew this wasn’t good, but I wasn’t functioning in my usual role as a Nurse Practitioner. I wasn’t thinking. I was numb. This time I was the daughter. We left at 3:30 in the morning and were back only a few hours later. My Dad was having seizures. We were told the tests they ran to assess his brain function basically said he would never again be the man we knew and loved. After a call to my brother and discussions with the chaplain and a priest, we knew what we wanted to do. Even with all my professional experience, nothing could prepare me for what I felt now, as the daughter. Thankfully, we had many discussions as a family about

this type of situation and we were all in agreement that my Dad would want the ventilator discontinued so he could die naturally. He had already died that night in the kitchen, although his heart was revived, and everyone tried their best, his brain would never be the same. It was time to let him go. And we did. I am so grateful that we were 100% certain of our decision, because it really was my Dad’s decision. He told us when we had open conversations about death and dying. I can’t even imagine if our family had to debate the options or had disagreements between us or felt completely lost as to what to do. As his daughter I knew we spoke for my Dad. We said what he couldn’t in the moment. Take the time to have these talks with your family and close friends, before Iget the call. “I don’t believe in goodbye, but I believe in letting go.” -Anonymous Karen Kopan, the owner of Intensive Karen, has over 30 years of ICU experience as a medical professional and has guided tens of thousands of families in making difficult life and death decisions.
