A LO CUBANO In Cuban style “A lo cubano, botella de ron y tabaco habano”. Ya lo dice la canción: la isla más grande del Caribe es conocida principalmente por sus playas, su ron y su tabaco (que no es poco). Y sin embargo Cuba es mucho más. Tanto que hasta pilla por sorpresa al más experimentado viajero demostrándole que cualquier idea preconcebida salta por los aires. Cultura, ciudades coloniales, naturaleza, un fondo marino envidiable… y cubanos. Si viajar abre tu mente, viajar a Cuba puede ponerla del revés. La isla verde Cuba es verde. Verde intenso. Verde como el de esos escenarios donde los dinosaurios volvían a acampar a sus anchas en Parque Jurásico. ¡Quién iba a pensar que uno podría pasar el día de ruta por la selva y terminar bañándose en una poza de agua cristalina junto a una cascada! El Nicho, perteneciente a la sierra de Escambray en la provincia de Cienfuegos, es el entorno natural más conocido en este sentido. Una preciosa ruta con el nombre tan apropiado de Reinos del Agua conduce a través del bosque tropical hasta varios saltos y pocetas donde refrescarte tras la sencilla caminata. Mucho más extenso es el Paisaje Natural Protegido de Topes de Collantes, accesible desde la turística Trinidad. Las alternativas para recorrerlo son muchas, con senderos de diferentes duraciones y grados de dificultad. La mayoría tienen alguna cascada como protagonista, si bien observar las distintas especies de árboles, helechos, orquídeas y aves ya es razón suficiente para adentrarse en él. Tierra, tabaco y sol Viñales es el reino del tabaco cubano. Sus montañas de caliza, los mogotes, perfilan el paisaje de estos valles que combinan el verde de sus palmeras con el rojo de sus tierras de cultivo. ¡Y cuánto se cultiva aquí! Frutas, yuca, maíz, arroz, patata… Pero sobre todo, de Viñales sale la materia prima para elaborar los puros más famosos del mundo. Conocer su proceso de producción en una plantación de tabaco es sumamente interesante. “El tabaco es como la mujer, hay que cuidarlo mucho para no perderlo”, nos explica Nino mientras se fuma su cigarro, como cada día desde hace 40 años. Palmarito, Silencio, Ancón, Guasasa... se llaman los valles que, junto al que se lleva la fama, Viñales, conforman el Parque Nacional del mismo nombre. Hacer senderismo, fácil o difícil, por cualquiera de ellos merece la pena. Y una recomendación final: ver atardecer desde la terraza del hotel Los Jazmines. Sin palabras. Bajo el mar Las playas cubanas, además de bellísimas, están llenas de vida. El slogan turístico que define los fondos marinos de Cuba como “el mejor lugar del Caribe para bucear” no es broma. Sus 5.700 kilómetros de costa y sus aguas con una temperatura media de 26 grados albergan arrecifes de coral, peces tropicales, tortugas… Y son tan generosos que permiten que los admires incluso si no eres un experto submarinista. Puedes sumergirte con gafas y tubo y ya disfrutarás de un buen espectáculo marino. O simplemente en la orilla, si estás atento, llegas a ver estrellas de mar e incluso rayas.

No importa el rumbo, no importa la ruta. Si en Europa todos los caminos llevan a Roma, en Cuba todos conducen al Malecón: cada atardecer este célebre muro frente al mar congrega a turistas y locales para compartir vistas, canciones y tragos. Imposible no unirse al rito diario. Por si fuera poco, a los encantos naturales perennes de La Habana hay que sumarle la celebración este 2019 de su 500 aniversario con un completo programa de actividades culturales a lo largo de todo el año. Cuba musical ¿Cuántos músicos hay en Cuba? La cifra tiende a infinito. Ser músico debe de ser la profesión mayoritaria en la isla. La música suena siempre y suena solo en directo. En bares, restaurantes, hoteles, calles, plazas… ¡En todas partes! La banda sonora cubana mezcla salsa, trova, jazz, rumba, chachachá y quéséyo. Aunque estos sones te asaltarán a tu paso, si hemos de elegir, nos quedamos con el jazz del club “La zorra y el cuervo” en La Habana y con la divertidísima “Casa de la Trova” en las noches musicales de Trinidad. Por supuesto, todos los conciertos bien regados con deliciosos cócteles a base de ron. Lo que dicen es cierto: un mojito no sabe igual en Cuba. Y añadimos: nadie baila mejor que en Cuba con un mojito. Bonus track: cubata y cuba libre no son lo mismo. Aunque en España llamamos por igual nombre a la bebida a base de ron y coca-cola, en Cuba son dos cócteles diferentes. El cubata se hace con ron oscuro y el cubra libre, con ron blanco.

María La Gorda, en la provincia de Viñales, y el archipiélago de Jardines de la Reina, al sureste, son los lugares más recomendados para el buceo y acogen alguna competición internacional. Por su ubicación, un tanto aislada, requieren de varios días de estancia. Para los principiantes es más aconsejable la Bahía de Cochinos (sí, la misma que protagonizó la incursión fallida de la CIA en los 60) con puntos de inmersión a escasos metros de la costa. ¿Te imaginas llegar caminando desde la orilla a una caída vertical submarina de 300 metros de profundidad? ¿O hacer snorkel en una cenote donde se mezclan agua dulce y salada?

También desde los Cayos, los idílicos islotes que rodean a la isla principal cubana, es posible tomar un barco que te lleve a nadar entre peces de colores.

Sorprendentemente abiertos y habladores, siempre divertidos, comentan cada vicisitud de su día a día, incluso los temas políticos que a priori esperaras les resultasen tabú.

La Habana es para caminarla Pasear por La Habana no es comparable a nada. La capital cubana redefine el concepto de “ciudad de contrastes”. Espléndidas construcciones, de la Catedral al Capitolio pasando por casas coloniales restauradas, conviven sin transición con edificios literalmente en ruinas. Cuidados automóviles clásicos ruedan junto a coches destartalados que casi milagrosamente continúan moviéndose. Decadente y bella, La Habana conquista.

No hay nada más especial en Cuba que los cubanos. Te encuentras taxistas filósofos, guías sabios, estudiantes parlanchines, trabajadores incansables y timadores profesionales. Los cubanos son conversadores, disfrutones, responsables, liantes, divertidos, sufridores, pedigüeños... Supervivientes. Los hay con quienes entablar interesantes (y desinteresadas) conversaciones y otros, disfrazados de estos, terminan en timadores (interesados). Que los segundos no te impidan disfrutar de los primeros.

“Es que la gente se acostumbró y ya saben, la costumbre es más fuerte que el amor”. “Ese hotel cambió muchas veces de nombre, pasa mucho aquí; y eso con los nombres, imagínense con las leyes”. Auténticas perlas. Y es que ni el viajero más inconsciente puede pasar por Cuba sin que un poco de Cuba pase también por él. ¿Te atreves a comprobarlo?

“The Cuban way, a bottle of rum and a Havana cigar”. The song says it all: the largest island in the Caribbean is known mainly for its beaches, rum and cigars (which is already plenty). But there’s plenty more to Cuba, so much more that the island takes even seasoned travellers by surprise, dispelling all of their preconceived notions of the country. Culture, colonial cities, nature, pristine waters... and Cuban cigars. If travelling is said to expand your horizons, then Cuba will impress you in ways you never thought possible. The green island

The Cuban beaches are not only beautiful, but are also brimming with life. When it comes to the marine life in Cuba, the tourist slogan “the best place in the Caribbean to dive”, is no joke. The island has 5,700 kilometres of coast line and its waters, with an average temperature of 26 degrees, are home to coral reefs, tropical fish, turtles... They’re so bountiful that you can admire them even if you’re not an expert diver. Dive in with mask and snorkel and you’ll be in for a spectacular underwater show. Or simply stay on the shore. If you look closely, you’ll be able to see starfish and even manta rays.

Cuba is green. Intensely green. Green like the landscapes in Jurassic Park when the dinosaurs once again roamed the Earth. Who would have thought it possible to spend the day exploring the jungle, and end up taking a dip in a crystal-clear natural pool next to a waterfall?

María La Gorda, in the province of Viñales, and the archipelago of Jardines de la Reina in the south-east are among the most highly-recommended places to scuba dive and even host international competitions. Because of its isolated location, we recommend staying for several days.

El Nicho, part of the Escambray mountain range in the province of Cienfuegos, is the best-known setting in this regard. It’s an amazing route that’s aptly named: Reinos del Agua, literally ‘Kingdom of Water’. It’ll take you through the tropical forest to several jumping points and pools where you can cool down after an easy hike.

For beginners, the best spot would be the Bay of Pigs (yes, the very same famed for the failed invasion by the CIA in the 1960s), which has access points just a few metres from the shore. Can you imagine walking out from the shoreline to a spot with a vertical underwater drop that’s 300 metres deep? Or snorkelling in a sinkhole where saltwater and fresh water come together?

The nature reserve park of Topes de Collantes, which is accessible from the touristic city of Trinidad, is much larger still. There are many options for those wishing to explore it, with different hiking trails that vary in length and difficulty. Most walks feature a waterfall, but simply taking in the different types of trees, ferns, orchids and birds is reason enough to explore it. Land, tobacco and sunshine Viñales is the prime site for Cuban tobacco. Its limestone hills, called mogotes, decorate the landscape of these valleys, which combine the green of palm trees with the red of fertile farmland. And so much is grown here! Fruit, yucca, corn, rice, potatoes... But above all else, Viñales produces the raw material that’s used to create the most famous cigars in the world. A visit to a tobacco plantation to learn a little about the production process is fascinating. “Tobacco is like women: you have to care deeply for it, otherwise you may lose it”, says Nino while he smokes a cigar, as he’s done every day for 40 years.

Under the sea

Palmarito, Silencio, Ancón, Guasasa... these are the valleys that - along with Viñales, the most famous among them - make up the nature reserve. Going for a hike to explore them, whether easy or difficult, is well worth it. And a final recommendation: catch the sunset from the terrace at the Los Jazmines hotel. It’ll leave you speechless.

From Los Cayos, small, paradise islands which surround the Cuban mainland, you can take a boat and swim among multi-coloured fish. Havana is meant to be explored on foot There’s nothing quite like strolling through Havana. The Cuban capital truly redefines the idea of “city of contrasts”. You’ll find magnificent buildings ranging from the Cathedral of the Capitolio to the restored colonial homes, all of which blend together with buildings that are literally in ruins. Carefullymanicured classic cars drive alongside dilapidated vehicles that miraculously keep moving. Decadent and beautiful, Havana conquers every heart. It doesn’t matter where you go or what route you choose. If, as they say in Europe, all roads lead to Rome, then in Cuba they all lead to the Malecón. Every day at sunset, this famous esplanade brings together tourists and locals alike to take in the views, listen to music and enjoy a few drinks. You’ll find the daily tradition impossible to resist. As if that weren’t enough, added to Havana’s enduring charm is the 2019 celebration of its 500th anniversary, which features an extensive programme of cultural activities all year long.

Musical Cuba How many musicians are there in Cuba? This tends towards infinity. Being a musician must be the most common profession on the island. Music is always playing and there’s always a live band. In bars, restaurants, hotels, streets, squares – everywhere! The Cuban soundtrack mixes together salsa, trova, jazz, rumba, chachachá and quéséyo. Though you’ll hear these rhythms everywhere, if we had to choose, it would be jazz at the ‘La zorra y el cuervo’ club in Havana and the incredibly entertaining ‘Casa de la Trova’ on musical nights in Trinidad. And, of course, every concert has its generous selection of rum-based cocktails. What they say is true: there’s nothing quite like a mojito made in Cuba. We’d also add that no one dances better than when in Cuba with a mojito in hand. As a bonus track: a rum and Coke and a Cuba Libre are not the same thing. Although in Spain the mixed rum and Coke and a Cuba Libre are the same thing, in Cuba they are two different cocktails. A rum and Coke is made with dark rum and the Cuba Libre uses white rum. My Cuban people The best thing about Cuba is the Cuban people themselves. You’ll come across philosophical taxi drivers, wise guides, chatty students, tireless workers and professional scam artists. The Cubans know how to talk and enjoy life. They know how work hard, have a great time, bear hardships, and ask too many questions... Survivors. You’ll find people to have deep conversations with (or those who simply want to chat) and those who pretend they’re looking for conversation but are really looking to scam you. But don’t let the latter stop you from enjoying genuine conversations with well-meaning locals. Surprisingly open and talkative, and always fun, they’ll tell you every detail of their lives, and even talk about politics, which you may think is a topic that’s off-limits. “People are used to it, and you know what they say: old habits die hard”. “That hotel has changed its name several times. And, if it happens with names, imagine what happens with our laws”. Talk about authentic gems. Even hardened travellers can’t visit Cuba without a bit of Cuba staying with them forever. Dare to find out?

QUÉ NO SE PUEDE PERDER AVISTAMIENTO DE BALLENAS EN SAMANÁ De enero a marzo las ballenas jorobadas acuden a la bahía de Samaná para dar a luz. EL SALTO DEL LIMÓN Una impresionante cascada rodeada de frondosos bosques. CARNAVAL DE LA VEGA Uno de los más bonitos de todo el Carib.

Llevas tiempo soñando con tus merecidas vacaciones y no ves el momento de bajar del avión en Punta Cana, llegar al resort y dedicarte al dolce far niente durante unos días. Pero cuándo ya te has bañado en todas las piscinas del resort, hecho kilómetros paseando por la playa de fina arena blanca y probado todos los cocktails de la carta, es posible que quieras algo más. Como reza el eslogan de la oficina de turismo, República Dominicana lo tiene todo, por eso queremos proponerte 5 planes para salir del resort y descubrir el país. Para ello te recomendamos alquilar un coche para poder ir a tu aire. Febrero es el mejor mes para visitar República Dominicana por varios motivos: es temporada seca, es el mes más frío (pero tranquilos, que la temperatura no baja de 25 grados), se celebra el carnaval y es época de apareamiento de ballenas. ¿Alguien da más? Avistamiento de Ballenas en Samaná De enero a marzo las ballenas jorobadas acuden a la bahía de Samaná para dar a luz, por lo que es relativamente fácil verlas nadar en las aguas de la bahía. Una vez llegues a la ciudad, verás que todo el mundo te ofrece el tour, pero no olvides que siempre hay que apostar por un turismo sostenible y contratar la actividad con una empresa que cumpla las normativas de acercamiento y avistamiento, apagando los motores del barco cuándo hay una ballena cerca y sin acercarse a más de 30 m de esta, de forma que tu experiencia va a ser totalmente respetuosa con los animales.

Solo oír la respiración de las ballenas jorobadas cuando suben a la superficie y verlas nadar cerca del barco es de por sí una maravilla, y si ese día están juguetonas y deciden regalarnos unos saltos, te llevarás una experiencia que difícilmente podrás borrar de tu mente. Puedes además combinar la excursión con una parada en Cayo Levantado, una paradisíaca isla de aguas turquesas y verdes de la que no querrás marcharte.

Excursión al Salto del Limón Seguro que en algún catálogo has visto una impresionante cascada rodeada de frondosos bosques. Sí, aunque no te lo creas, en República Dominicana también hay cascadas y ríos dónde darse un refrescante chapuzón. La cascada más famosa, y una de las más altas de la isla, es El Salto del Limón, situado en el corazón de la península de Samaná. El camino está en buen estado y la excursión a pie no dura más de 40 minutos hasta llegar a la base de la cascada, tras bajar 280 escalones (recuerda que luego hay que subirlos). Una vez llegues a la piscina natural y te des un baño, sigue bajando las escaleras para encontrar un salto más pequeño, pero probablemente desierto en el que podrás gozar de toda la tranquilidad del mundo durante un rato. Carnaval de la Vega Es posible que nunca hayas oído hablar del Carnaval Vegano, pese a ser uno de los más bonitos de todo el Caribe. No se trata un evento gastronómico, sino de un desfile de comparsas que se remonta a 1520. El carnaval tiene su fiesta grande el día 27 de febrero, coincidiendo con la celebración de la independencia del país, pero cada domingo del mes de febrero las calles de la localidad de La Vega, así como las de las principales ciudades del país, se llenan de color y jolgorio. Pero el carnaval de la Vega tiene algo especial, y son los diablos cojuelos. Con llamativas máscaras y accesorios de colores, más de 80 comparsas diferentes salen a la calle armadas con las vejigas de toro, una especie de globo con el que “azotan” a todo aquel que encuentran en su camino, así que mantente en la acera sí no quieres recibir un vejigazo. ¡Duelen un poco, pero son parte de la tradición y la fiesta! Los folkloristas lo consideran el más viejo de América y no en vano ha sido declarado patrimonio folklórico nacional, ¡por lo que no te lo puedes perder sí estás en estas fechas por la isla! Música en Vivo en Santo Domingo Santo Domingo se encuentra a solo dos horas de Punta Cana por autopista, así que no hay excusa para no ir, ya sea en coche alquilado o transporte público, > evelop.com 21

pues la capital está bien conectada por bus con Punta Cana. Sí bien la ciudad merece una visita, sobretodo a la zona colonial y la primera catedral de América, lo mejor es hacerla en domingo, dedicando la mañana a recorrer sus coloridas calles, degustando la comida criolla y acabar la tarde delante de las ruinas de San Francisco, dónde desde las 6 de la tarde la banda Bonyé se sube a la tarima para tocar merengue, jazz o son, como sí de la orquestra de las fiestas del pueblo se tratase. La plaza se llena de vida y se convierte en una pista de baile dónde los improvisados bailarines, que por supuesto llevan el ritmo en las venas, invitan a que todo el mundo se una a la fiesta, sepas bailar o no. El ambiente de la plaza es lo máximo, y luego la fiesta sigue (porque aunque sea domingo, tú estás de vacaciones) en el bar Parada 77, a dos calles de las ruinas, al cuál se va a bailar. Esto hace que haya muy buen ambiente y no sea nada tenso bailar con desconocidos, pues solo quieren bailar. ¿Te animas a marcarte unos pasos? Glamping en Bahía de las Águilas El último plan requiere cruzar todo el país, hasta prácticamente llegar a la frontera con Haití, pero merece muchísimo la pena, no en vano Bahía de las Águilas figura en la lista de las 10 playas con las aguas más cristalinas de todo el planeta, que no es poco. Además, durante el camino pasarás por pueblos dominicanos dónde podrás ver cómo es la vida fuera del resort. ¿Y qué es eso del glamping? Es un concepto que se ha puesto de moda recientemente y que viene a ser un camping con estilo. Nada de tener que sudar para montar la tienda ni pasar penas porque se te clavan las piedras en la espalda por la noche, eso pasó a la historia. Al glamping se va a disfrutar, sobretodo

cuando tu tienda, ya montada y con camas normales, está en primera línea de mar. Y por primera línea no nos referimos al paseo marítimo, sino a 2 metros del agua. Imagínate antes de ir a dormir, sentado bajo las estrellas, acostándote con el sonido del mar en tus oídos y dejando que el sol te despierte de forma natural, descubriendo al abrir la cremallera de la tienda un mar de color turquesa que te deja sin palabras. Una experiencia totalmente diferente al resort y muy recomendable para hacer alguna vez en la vida. Pero lo mejor no acaba al salir de la tienda. You’ve been dreaming about this well-deserved holiday for so long. You just can’t wait to get off the plane in Punta Cana, arrive at the resort and dedicate yourself to some relaxation for a few days. But after you have swam in all the resort pools, strolled along miles of white sandy beaches and sampled all the cocktails on the menu, you might be in the mood to try something else. As the tourist office slogan says, the Dominican Republic has it all. That's why we would like to recommend 5 things to do outside the resort so you can discover the rest of the country. We suggest you hire a car so you can travel at your own pace. February is the best month to visit the Dominican Republic for a variety of reasons: it’s the dry season, it’s the coolest month (but don’t worry, the temperature is always over 25 degrees), it’s Carnival time, and it’s also the whale breeding season. What more could you want? Whale watching in Samaná From January to March, humpback whales come to Samaná Bay to give birth, making it relatively easy to approach them and watch them swimming in the bay. When you arrive in Samaná, you will see there are many companies which offer tours. Don’t forget to opt for sustainable tourism by choosing a company

which complies with the whale-watching regulations. Boat engines must be switched off when near a whale and boats must stay at a distance of at least 30 m to ensure your experience will not harm the animals in any way. Just listening to the humpback whales breathing as they come to the surface and watching them swim near the boat is a delight, and if they are feeling playful and decide to show off with a few jumps in the air, you will walk away with an unforgettable memory. You can also combine the tour with a stop at Cayo Levantado, an idyllic island surrounded by a turquoise and green sea which so beautiful you won’t want to leave. Excursion to Salto Del limón You've surely seen photos of impressive waterfalls surrounded by lush forests. Amazingly, in the Dominican Republic there are waterfalls that are just as lovely, as well as rivers where you can take a refreshing dip. The most famous waterfall, and one of the highest on the island, is El Salto del Limón, located in the heart of the Samaná peninsula. There is a good road and the walk to the bottom of the waterfall takes about 40 minutes, including climbing down 280 steps. Don’t forget you will have to go back up them later! smaller and less frequented waterfall. You may well be the only people there and able to enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful spot. La Vega Carnival You may never have heard of the La Vega Carnival, although it is one of the most beautiful in the whole Caribbean. It is a parade of dancing troupes with origins that date back to 1520. The Carnival’s big festival day is 27 February, coinciding with the Dominican Republic’s independence day, but on every Sunday in February the streets in La Vega, and indeed in all the main towns throughout the country, are filled with colour and revelry. The La Vega Carnival has a particularly interesting element: the Limping Devils. Wearing flamboyant masks and colourful accessories, more than 80 troupes dance through the streets armed

with inflated bull bladders, with which they "lash out" at anyone in their path. Keep to the pavement if you don’t want to be hit with a veijgazo, or bladder! It does hurt a little, but it’s all part of the tradition and festival! Folklore experts say the La Vega Carnival is the oldest in Latin America, which explains why it has been declared a National Folklore Heritage. If you are on the island around Carnival time, this is not to be missed! Live music in Santo Domingo Santo Domingo is just two-hour drive from Punta Cana, making it an easy day trip. You can hire a car or go by public transport, as Punta Cana has a good bus service to the capital city. The city is well worth a visit, particularly the old town, called the Ciudad Colonial, and the cathedral, the first in the Americas. The best

You can spend the morning strolling through the colourful streets, sampling local cuisine at lunchtime and finishing the afternoon by visiting the San Francisco ruins, where starting at 6:00 p.m. the group Bonyé take the stage to play merengue, jazz and son, just like an orchestra would do during a village festival. The plaza gets very lively, as it soon becomes a dance floor where ad-lib local dancers, who appear to have rhythm running through their veins, invite everyone to join in whether they know how to dance or not. The atmosphere in the plaza is wonderful, and afterwards the dance continues at the Parada 77 Bar, just two streets from the ruins. Don’t worry that it’s on a Sunday: you're on holiday! The bar has a great ambiance and it’s fine to dance with people you don’t know; everyone just wants to dance. Do you fancy a twirl? Glamping in Aguilas Bay Our last suggestion involves crossing the country, practically to the border with Haiti, but it is really worth the effort. Águila Bay enters in the list of the 10 Beaches with the Clearest Water in the World, which is not a bad recommendation! What’s more, on the way you pass through a number of Dominican villages, where you can see how people live in the rural areas. So, what is glamping? Glamping is the recent and fashionable concept of camping in style. It has nothing to do with lugging your tent up a mountain or feeling hard stones under you as you sleep. That’s all in the past. You will love glamping, especially in Águilas Bay, where your tent is set up ready for you on the seashore and is complete with proper beds. And we really do mean right on the seashore, as you'll be just 2 metres away from the water.

La trayectoria de este importante Festival es ya un legado para las futuras generaciones de la isla, ya que como objetivo se trabaja en hacer conciencia y dejar un conocimiento de cómo preservar este preciado bien natural y de gran valor para el turismo en Cozumel. Bajo las aguas de Cozumel se encuentra el Museo Subacuático del Buzo de Oro, donde a pocos metros de distancia se pueden observar las esculturas de tres grandes personalidades del océano, Jacques Y. Isla Cozumel, considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mexican Caribbean and the diving mecca of the Americas, will host Mexico’s biggest diving festival. Now in its sixth edition, the Cozumel Scuba Fest will be held from November 27 to December 1. Being an international diving destination, the event will naturally be attended by speakers from all over the world who will visit Isla Cozumel to enjoy some excellent diving as well as giving talks to the Festival’s attendees. The history of this major Festival has already created a legacy for the island’s future generations, thanks to its mission of raising awareness and increasing the understanding of how to preserve this precious natural resource that is so valuable to tourism in Cozumel. Located under the waters of Cozumel is the Museo Subacuático del Buzo de Oro (Underwater Museum of the Golden Diver) where, just a few feet apart, divers can visit sculptures of three leading personalities of the ocean. These include Jacques Y. Cousteau, whose sculpture was submerged in 2013; Mexico’s best-loved diver, Ramón Bravo, which was unveiled underwater by his daughter Deborah Bravo in 2014; and the famous doctor Sylvia Earle who visited the island while attending the festival in 2015. These valuable sculptures are now a habitat for the Caribbean's fish populations and a big draw for underwater enthusiasts of all ages. Another attraction to be promoted as part of the festival is its namesake diving route: The Scuba Fest Route consists of nine dives at the most beautiful reefs

of the island, such as Palancar with its stunning colorful gardens and walls full of marine life; Paso del Cedral, where the native Caribbean “Splendid Toadfish” can be spotted; Punta Sur, where you’re likely to find yourself swimming alongside a curious hawksbill turtle; or the Xicotencatl shipwreck that fascinates all who explore it. During the event, the now hotly-anticipated “Buzo de Oro” (Golden Diver) award is given out a recognition of individuals who have left a legacy in terms of the conservation and understanding of the oceans and marine life. The Festival was honored to receive Francisco Pizarro, founder of the San Sebastián Underwater Film Festival, who visited the island in 2017 with his wife Regina González to receive this important award. This year, nominees include the renowned Spanish diver Karlos Simón, who fell in love with the island when he visited it and, as part of a passionate group of professional, directed a documentary entitled: “Cozumel, Un Paraíso en el Caribe Maya” (Cozumel, A Paradise in the Mayan Caribbean), which received awards at more than 10 international film festivals. Tras varios meses de espera y de ver como se ha ido tomando forma el último integrante de la familia evelop!, por fin podemos decir que ya forma parte de la flota de la compañía. El jueves 28 de marzo, el nuevo Airbus A350900 aterrizó en el aeropuerto Madrid – Barajas Adolfo Suárez desde la sede de Airbus en Toulouse después de varios meses esperando su llegada.

After several months of waiting and seeing how the latest member of the Evelop! family has been measuring up, we can finally say that it is now part of the company's fleet. On Thursday, 28 March, the new Airbus A350-900 landed at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas airport from the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse after several months' wait.

The new aircraft's landing was a unique event; not only was its landing a reason to celebrate, but several company employees were

able to travel to the Airbus headquarters in Toulouse and experience the landing from inside the aeroplane that was piloted by Captain Borja Laraudogoitia. Continuing the growth and the expansion of its fleet, in 2020 Evelop will incorporate its second model which is currently considered to be the quietest and most modern aeroplane in today's market and which consumes 25% less fuel.

Evelop acepta una bolsa de equipaje de mano en todos sus vuelos, incluyendo los realizados dentro de territorio español. Las dimensiones del equipaje de mano no pueden exceder de 50 x 45 x 25 cms. Y su peso no debe superar 10 kgs. No obstante, elementos como bolsos de mano, libros de bolsillo, prendas de abrigo, paraguas o bastón serán aceptados a bordo sin necesidad de ser etiquetados ni pesados.

Evelop allows passengers to bring only one piece of hand luggage onboard which should not exceed the following dimensions and weight: 50 x 45 x 25 cms, and weight cannot exceed more than 10 kgs. However objects such as handbags, paperback books, coats, umbrellas or walking sticks can be brought onboard without previously being weighed or labelled.

A comprehensive selection of video programmes are available to our passengers on all intercontinental flights and most European flights from mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. In order to enjoy this service, headsets are available on request at the price of 4 Euros. These headsets are compatible with most electronic systems.

Minors under the age of five must travel with an adult seated beside them and must never be seated at emergency exits. From the ages of 5 to 12, they may travel while seated with a passenger over the age of 16, but never at emergency exits.

MEDIDAS DE SEGURIDAD SAFETY MEASURES Desde el 6 de Noviembre del 2006, la Unión Europea (UE) ha adoptado nuevas medidas de seguridad que restringen la cantidad de líquidos o sustancias de consistencia similar que los pasajeros pueden llevar consigo cuando pasan los controles de seguridad de los aeropuertos comunitarios. Estas medidas son aplicables a todos los pasajeros que salgan de los aeropuertos de la UE, independientemente de su destino. Las nuevas medidas no limitan la adquisición por los pasajeros de estos líquidos o sustancias en las tiendas situadas más allá del punto de control donde usted muestra su tarjeta de embarque o a bordo de las aeronaves operadas por una aerolínea de la UE.

Since 6th November 2006, the European Union has adopted new security measures restricting the volume of liquids or similar substances which passengers are allowed to carry with them through security controls in European airports. These measures are applicable to all passengers leaving EU airports, regardless of their destination. However, the new measures do not limit passengers from obtaining these liquids or substances from shops situated beyond the control point where a boarding pass must be shown, or onboard aircraft operated by a EU airline.

¿Qué es nuevo?

What is new?

Sólo le está permitido llevar en su equipaje de mano pequeñas cantidades de líquidos. Estos líquidos tienen que ir en pequeños contenedores con una capacidad individual máxima de 100ml. Cada pasajero tiene que empaquetar estos contenedores en una bolsa transparente de plástico con autocierre de no más de un litro de capacidad máxima, para facilitar la inspección de estos productos en los controles de seguridad. Los pasajeros deberán proveerse de dichas bolsas antes del inicio de su viaje. A efectos de las nuevas medidas, se consideran líquidos:

Only small amounts of liquid are allowed to be carried in the hand luggage. Such liquids must be transported in small containers, with an individual maximum capacity of 100ml. Each passenger must package these containers in a self-sealing, transparent, plastic bag, of no more than one-litre capacity to facilitate inspection of these products at security controls. Passengers must obtain such bags before beginning their journey. Liquids include:

Usted puede todavía: • Llevar los productos autorizados, incluidos los líquidos y sustancias relacionados en el apartado anterior, en las maletas que usted factura; las nuevas medidas sólo afectan al equipaje de mano. • Llevar en su equipaje de mano medicinas y comida para bebés, para su uso durante el viaje, presentándolos separadamente en los controles de seguridad, pero no dentro de la bolsa transparente. • Comprar líquidos como bebidas y perfumes, bien en cualquier tienda de los aeropuertos de la UE cuando éstas estén situadas más allá del punto de control de seguridad o bien a bordo de una aeronave operada por una aerolínea europea. Si estos productos son vendidos en bolsas selladas, no las abra hasta que no haya finalizado su viaje. Si usted va a continuar su viaje en otro aeropuerto de la UE, no abra esta bolsa sellada hasta que haya salido del último aeropuerto comunitario. Todos estos líquidos son adicionales a las cantidades de la bolsa de plástico mencionada anteriormente.

At the airport • All liquids must be presented within the aforementioned bag, separately from hand luggage and placed in the tray provided for that purpose by security controls, to be examined by the security personnel. • Passengers must remove their jacket and/or coat and place them in a tray. These garments must be examined separately during the inspection. • Passengers must remove their laptop computer or any other electronic device of similar dimensions from its case, and place it in a tray to be inspected separately from its case at security controls.

What does not change? You still can:

• Carry authorized products, including liquids and similar substances mentioned in the previous section, in your checked baggage; the new measures only affect hand luggage. • Carry medicines and baby food in your hand luggage, for use during the trip, presenting them separately at the security controls, but not in a transparent bag. • Buy liquids such as beverages and perfumes from shops situated beyond the control point or on board aircrafts operated by an EU airline. If these products are sold in sealed bags, do not open them until your trip is finished. If you are going to continue your trip to another EU airport, do not open the sealed bag until you have left the last EU airport. All these liquids are additional to the quantities mentioned above for the plastic bag.
