Y es que Kenia es un destino que levanta pasiones, un lugar salvaje en estado puro, lleno de belleza y magnificencia, donde los amaneceres son de un rojo intenso y las noches son tan profundamente oscuras que las perseidas y estrellas parecen alcanzables. Ciudades keniatas, el mestizaje está servido

De safari por los mil y un parques naturales

Nairobi. La capital de Kenia, que cuenta con una población de más de 5 millones de habitantes, es un crisol de culturas. Desde los masáis, suajilis, británicos y habitantes de países vecinos, a etíopes y sursudaneses, todos ellos conforman lo que hoy es Nairobi. La historia de esta urbe es relativamente reciente, ya que fue fundada en 1899 por los colonos británicos, quienes impusieron su idioma (el inglés es lengua oficial junto al suajili) y el estilo arquitectónico en las fachadas y calles, característica que se ve nada más pisar la ciudad. Kenia consiguió su independencia en 1963 y desde entonces Nairobi ha conservado su figura como capital y su importancia comercial. Cuando viajas a Kenia, Nairobi es de obligada visita, no solo porque es donde se encuentra el aeropuerto internacional sino porque merece la pena conocer cómo es la frenética ciudad africana y la joya que esconde entre sus grandes edificios. Se trata de su mimado parque nacional homónimo, una reserva a escasos kilómetros de la metrópoli, en el que los pocos rinocerontes negros que quedan en el planeta tierra descansan a sus anchas convirtiéndose en el motivo principal para realizar una visita.

Dentro de este parque se halla el Orfanato de elefantes de David Sheldrick, un lugar en el que cuidan hasta la edad adulta a crías de elefantes que han quedado huérfanas, una excursión perfecta para hacer en familia. No te marches de la capital sin pasear por sus calles, descansar en el parque Uhuro y sin degustar algún plato exótico típico de la zona, como los que ofrece el famoso restaurante The Carnivore, en el que sirven carnes variadas y peculiares ¿te atreves a probarlas?

Samburu. En el centro del país, a unos 300 kilómetros de la capital, se encuentra un parque nacional que a pesar de sus dimensiones (reducidas en comparación con el resto de reservas) es digno de ver. La Reserva Nacional de Samburu es uno de los escenarios ideales donde podrás conocer la vida salvaje del país, ya que apenas hay rastro de vida humana. La sabana cuenta con varios ríos que en época de lluvias mantienen la zona verde, frondosa y llena de vida.

Los elefantes pasean a sus anchas por estas tierras y son el gran reclamo del parque. Te aseguramos que verlos en libertad, gozando de los cuidados de una reserva es una experiencia indescriptible. Este parque, como la mayoría de los de Kenia, goza de buenas infraestructuras, guías que pueden aconsejar y automóviles 4x4, por lo que la visita con niños se hace factible.

Mombasa. Cambiando de aires a unos más marítimos, pero sin movernos de la majestuosa Kenia, nos vamos a una ciudad bañada por el Índico. Un lugar paradisíaco, famoso por sus playas salvajes, desérticas, de aguas cristalina. Estamos hablando de la encantadora ciudad de Mombasa. De pasado árabe y con una larga trayectoria en comercio marítimo, la ciudad posee el puerto más importante del país, aunque hoy su principal fuente de ingresos es el turismo. En la urbe portuaria, uno de los ‘musts’ es pasear por la ciudad vieja que flota sobre una isla unida al continente por diversos puentes. Puestecillos de artesanía y alimentos, locales que se pasean de un lado a otro con sus quehaceres habituales por las estrechas calles árabes, mezquitas que se levantaron antaño y fachadas entre la decadencia y el derrumbe son la esencia que atrae a miles de turistas cada año. Pero no cabe duda que la ‘joya de la corona’ es el conocido Fuerte Jesús, construido en el siglo XVI por el rey Fernando II de España con el objetivo de proteger el pueblo y hoy considerado patrimonio de la humanidad por la Unesco. En esta localidad hay una larga tradición musical, como la Taarab, melódica y agradable, típica del folclore local. Si tienes la oportunidad de escucharla, presta mucha atención ya que raramente se puede asistir a un concierto de este estilo.

Parece que ya no estamos en la sabana africana, pero nada más lejos de la realidad, Kenia posee una variedad natural increíble. Como el parque situado en los montes Aberdare, a unos 3000 metros de altura, elemento que hace que esta reserva sea muy diferente a las demás. Verde, boscosa y de difícil acceso, el safari en esta zona es una experiencia única, ya que la fauna es aún más variada y la flora todavía más endémica.

Aquí, siempre que se dejen ver, podrás avistar grande felinos y otros animales: leones, leopardos, el famoso mono colobus, elefantes, rinocerontes negros y múltiples aves de la zona. Una advertencia, en el parque está prohibida la entrada a pie, por ello y debido a la cantidad de barrizales presentes en el camino, la excursión ha de hacerse en 4x4, elemento que hace que todo sea más emocionante y auténtico.

Tsavo. Estamos ante uno de los parques más amplios y más ricos en fauna y una de las atracciones principales de Kenia, el increíble parque nacional de Tsavo. Aquí los amaneceres son de otro planeta y cuando cae la noche las estrellas se ven como en ningún otro lado. El silencio es ensordecedor y solo se ve interrumpido por algún graznido de un ave o el barrito del elefante, un espectáculo para los sentidos. Al sur del país y a pocos kilómetros de la costera Mombasa se encuentra esta reserva, un lugar único en el mundo. Es tan amplio en tamaño y en paisajes que se divide en dos: el East y el West (Este y Oeste). Para realizar un safari en condiciones por este parque de más de 22.000 km² hay que dedicarle unas cuantas horas, pero merece la pena. La división entre west y east tiene lo suyo, ya que son muy diferentes entre sí. El paisaje del este presenta una sabana semiárida, auténtica, de un marcado carácter africano, la flora es menos densa por lo que la fauna también, pero ésta es más visible. Por otro lado, el West, montañoso y húmedo, cuenta con la presencia de lagos, cascadas y una vegetación más frondosa. Por esta razón, las aves y mamíferos son abundantes. Uno de los monumentos naturales que no puedes dejar escapar es la imponente Mudande Rock y las fuentes Mzima, casa de cocodrilos e hipopótamos.

Masái Mara es una de las joyas de la corona de Kenia, no solo porque es una de las reservas más rentables del país y uno de los safaris con más reclamo, sino que además es la casa de los ‘Cinco Grandes’. Este parque, situado en el corazón de Kenia, tiene ciertas características que lo hacen especial. Forma parte del desierto del Serengueti, un tesoro natural y uno de los parques más famosos del país vecino, Tanzania. Otra de las características de este parque es la presencia del río Mara, que provoca la presencia de miles de aves y mamíferos casi todo el año. Otro elemento que lo hace único es que la tribu Masái habita en él, en plena armonía con la vida salvaje. Y por último, uno de los espectáculos naturales más emocionantes del planeta sucede aquí. En verano, cuando la sequía acecha en la sabana de Masái Mara, las migraciones a tierras más fértiles de miles de animales en manada, crean una escena apasionante que tienes que ver. Por todo esto, el parque es una cita obligada.

Lago Nakuru, un espectáculo de colores. Un manto rosa se divisa en el horizonte. Entre los tonos ocres y rojizos del panorama, el rosa es un color que no pasa desapercibido. Estamos entrando en tierras pantanosas, donde los microorganismos y algas abundan, y en África, donde hay alimento hay vida. Estamos hablando del Parque Natural del Lago Nakuru, una masa de agua poco profunda, frecuentado por millones de flamencos, y lo de millones no es broma. En primavera, más de la mitad de los flamencos del mundo emigran hasta esta zona de África para pasar la época de abundancia.

Nuestra recomendación para avistar este espectáculo es hacerlo al atardecer, cuando el sol comienza a bajar y aviva esos tonos encarnados, pero un consejo, tienes que mantener el silencio ya que un solo murmullo podría espantar a todo el tropel de aves. When Nobel Prize-winning author Ernest Hemingway travelled to Kenya, he wrote down a now famous phrase to describe the sensation felt by many during their stay on the African continent: “I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up and was not happy.” Kenya is a country that arouses different passions. Wilderness in its purest state, full of beauty and grandeur, where the dawn breaks in an intense red and the night is so deep and dark that the meteor showers and stars feel almost within reach. This is an adventure that will steal your heart – don’t miss it!

Kenya is one of the most striking countries on the African continent. A landscape that is hostile yet teeming with life and rich in biodiversity with a high level of political and social stability. Bathed by the waters of the Indian Ocean on one side and bordered

by Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, Kenya has a unique ecosystem. This is all thanks to its geographical position on the equator, and also to its citizens’ efforts to protect its fauna and flora. With more than 20 parks and natural reserves, this country is the perfect destination for those seeking nature, to spot the ‘Big Five’ and to learn more about a unique culture.

Dip into Kenya’s urban melting pots Nairobi. The Kenyan capital has a population of over 5 million and is a crucible of culture. The Masai, Swahili, British and other inhabitants from neighbouring countries from Ethiopia to South Sudan, now all call Nairobi home. The history of this city is relatively recent, founded as recently as 1899

by British colonists. They imposed their language (English is the official language, alongside Swahili) and the architectural style of the streets and building façades, which makes an instant impression on visitors who arrive in the city. Kenya achieved independence in 1963 and since then Nairobi has maintained its position as the country’s commercial and political centre. Nairobi is an essential stop on any Kenya itinerary, and not just because the international airport is located here. It is well worth getting to know this frenetic African city and the hidden gems among its grand buildings. Essential sights include Nairobi’s well-maintained homonymous national park – a nature reserve located just a few kilometres from the city and home to the last remaining black rhinos in the world – the main attraction for visitors here. This park is also the location of the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, where orphaned elephants are reared to adulthood, offering a perfect family day out. Don’t leave the capital without strolling through its streets, taking a breather in Uhuro Park and trying some of the region’s exotic dishes, such as those served up at The Carnivore restaurant, which specialises in varied, unusual meats. We dare you to get stuck in!

Mombasa. Breathe some sea air without leaving majestic Kenya and head for a city on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Paradise on earth, famous for its wild, deserted beaches and crystal-clear waters. We’re talking about the charming city of Mombasa. With its

Arabic heritage and long history of maritime trade, this is the country’s main port city, although tourism represents its biggest source of income today. Don’t leave this seafaring city without strolling through its old town, located on an island connected to the mainland by various bridges. Stalls selling handicrafts and street food, locals running errands through the narrow streets that date back to the city’s Arabic past, the call to prayer from the mosques and the façades in all states of repair: this is the essence of Mombasa, which attracts thousands of tourists every year. There’s no doubt, however, that the jewel in its crown is the famous Fort Jesus, built in the 16th century by Ferdinand II of Spain to protect the city, and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area has a long musical tradition, with styles and genres such as melodic, charming Taarab, which is typical of the local culture. Be sure to pay close attention if you attend a Taarab concert, because such musical opportunities are rare.

On safari in a thousand and one nature reserves Samburu. In the centre of the country, around 300 kilometres from the capital, is a national park that is well worth a visit despite its comparatively small size.

Almost untouched by humans, the Samburu National Reserve is an ideal setting to get to know the country’s wildlife. The savannah here is crossed by several rivers that keep the area lush, verdant and full of life every rainy season. Elephants roam freely across the land and represent the park’s major attraction. Watching them living freely within the protection of the reserve is an indescribable experience. This park, like most in Kenya, has good infrastructure, knowledgeable guides and 4x4 vehicles that make it easy to visit with children.

Aberdare Range, a forest in the savannah. Dawn breaks over the mist-covered mountainside. The tops of the tall trees are hidden and all you can see through the low cloud is a blanket of green covering the ground. It feels as though we’ve left the African savannah far behind, but nothing could be further from the truth – the natural diversity of Kenya is staggering. Just like the national park located in the Aberdare Range, the 3,000 metre altitude sets this reserve apart from the rest. Green, leafy and difficult to access, safaris in this area are a unique experience, thanks to the particularly varied fauna and yet more endemic flora. If you’re lucky enough, you might spot big cats and other species here: lions, leopards, the famous colobus monkey, elephants, black rhinos and many different regional bird species. A word of warning however: access to the park on foot is forbidden. As a result, and due to the muddy terrain on the journey, trips must be made by 4x4, which only makes the experience more exciting and authentic.

Tsavo. The incredible Tsavo national park is among the largest and richest in terms of wildlife, making it one of Kenya’s star attractions. The sunrises here are other-worldly, and when night falls, it’s an unbeatable place for stargazing. The silence feels deafening and is only broken by the cawing of a bird or an elephant trumpeting – a spectacle for all the senses.

This unique reserve, a genuine one-off, is located in the south of the country just a few kilometres from Mombasa along the coast. The reserve is so extensive and its landscapes so diverse that it is divided into two areas: East and West. To properly enjoy this 22,000 km² park, you’ll need to devote several hours to it on your safari, which will be worth every minute. The East and West parts of the reserve each have their own special attributes. The landscape of the East is semi-arid, with an authentic and markedly African character. The flora is less dense and consequently so is the fauna – but it is easier to spot! On the other side, the mountainous and humid West is home to lakes, waterfalls and leafier vegetation. As a result, birds and mammals are abundant here. Two must-see natural monuments are the imposing Mudande Rock and Mzima Springs, home to crocodiles and hippos.

It’s part of the Serengeti plain, a natural treasure and one of the most famous parks of neighbouring Tanzania. Another of the park’s features is the Mara river, which attracts thousands of birds and

mammals almost year-round. The Masai tribe, who live here in total harmony with nature, are another unique element of this place. Finally, one of the most exciting natural spectacles on the planet takes place here. Every summer, as the dry season creeps across the Masai Mara plain, herds of thousands of animals migrate in search of more fertile lands: a thrilling scene that has to be seen to be believed. Take it from us, this park is not to be missed.

Lake Nakuru, a riot of colour. A pink blanket appears on the horizon. Among the red and ochre tones of the panorama, pink is the colour that simply pops. Welcome to the wetlands, blooming with micro-organisms and algae. In Africa, where there is food, there is life. This is Lake Nakuru National Park, a shallow stretch of water visited by millions of flamingos. And we’re not kidding when we say millions. Every spring, more than half the world’s flamingos migrate to this part of Africa to plunder the abundant food. To appreciate this spectacle, we recommend visiting there towards the end of the day, when the sun begins to set emphasising myriad shades of pink. Some advice, however: stay absolutely quiet as just a murmur can spook the entire flock. Zanzíbar huele a vainilla, clavo y canela. Una fragancia agradable que te hipnotiza dándote sosiego, te evoca a un pasado próspero pero agitado y te transporta a lo que es esta región, un cofre que encierra mil maravillas. A unos 34 kilómetros de la árida costa de Tanzania, en el océano Índico, se halla esta pequeña isla en la que el verde de sus bosques, el turquesa de sus aguas y el blanco de la arena contrastan fuertemente con el resto del continente al que pertenece.

A pesar de su reducido tamaño, Zanzíbar cuenta con un pasado glorioso, ya que fue punto clave en el comercio de especias, esclavos y objetos artesanos de gran valor. Por la isla pasaron múltiples culturas, dejando en ella su legado y moldeando el encanto que actualmente irradia. Europeos, árabes y persas estuvieron durante siglos en constante trifulca por hacerse con el control y con la riqueza de la isla, hasta que en 1963 Zanzíbar consiguió su independencia y pasó a formar parte de Tanzania como un estado semiautónomo. Tras este pasado convulso, propio de países del Viejo Continente, actualmente la isla goza de estabilidad social y económica gracias al turismo, su principal fuente de ingresos, y se antoja como uno de los destinos más apetecibles del continente africano. Déjate llevar por la ‘Isla de las Especias’.

Stone Town, las mil y una noches en el Índico La histórica capital de Zanzíbar, Stone Town, te espera. Lleva siglos esperándote pacientemente, sin muchos cambios, ni su belleza ni su rutina se han visto alteradas por el paso del tiempo. Sus habitantes, orgullosos de sus raíces y de poseer una joya como lugar de residencia, insisten en que la isla de Zanzíbar es más que playa y sol, algo que descubrirás nada más aterrizar en el aeropuerto internacional, situado muy cerca de la urbe. La ciudad cuenta con una decadencia atractiva, esa decadencia que hace vislumbrar un pasado célebre y convulso, convirtiéndola en una visita obligatoria de al menos un día completo.

Como muchas ciudades de origen árabe, ésta se divide en dos: la ciudad vieja y la nueva, valiendo como frontera una de las arterias principales de la urbe, la avenida Bejamin Mkapa. El objetivo lo pondremos

en el casco histórico, un laberinto de calles estrechas, fachadas hechas de coral blanco y puertas de madera delicadamente talladas, una mezcla que hace que la ciudad sea conocida como “la ciudad blanca”. Uno de los monumentos más visitados es la conocida Casa de Las Maravillas, antigua residencia del sultán Barghash ibn Said, que gobernaba por aquel entonces. El palacete se sitúa en el paseo marítimo y hoy en día alberga el imponente Museo del Palacio.

Para mimetizarse con los locales y conocer su día a día hay dos sitios a los que acudir: los Jardines de Forodhani Otra, un lugar en el que la gente descansa a la sombra de los árboles y disfruta de los bonitos atardeceres africano, y el dicharachero Mercado de Darajani. Este bazar es digno de visitar por su colorido, por el bullicio que provoca y por los mil artículos que en él se venden, desde las famosas especias a los productos de artesanía pasando por el pescado fresco del día.

El único vestigio portugués que queda en la isla, ya que Vasco da Gama fue el primer europeo que puso un pie en tierra zanzibareña, es el antiguo fuerte, construido en 1700 y que actualmente se conserva bastante bien, lo suficiente para hacerse una idea de la obsesión de los colonos y conquistadores por proteger la isla de posibles ataques. Merece la pena admirar el monumento y conocer las historias que le rodean.

Playas del norte, el paraíso está servido La isla tiene una variedad increíble de playas, algunas más remotas, otras más turísticas, unas conformadas por arena blanca, otras más rocosas, pero todas, absolutamente todas, poseen una belleza extraordinaria. Las playas del norte de Zanzíbar son playas tranquilas, de fácil acceso, pero también las más conocidas y turísticas. En este punto cardinal se concentran la mayor parte de los resorts, por lo que es la zona ideal para viajar en familia y pasar una larga semana tranquilamente cerca de alguna de las playas paradisíacas de la zona. finísimo en el que los dhow navegan con la vela izada sin más preocupación que la de pescar una buena pieza para venderla en el mercado. Aunque en esta parte de la isla las mareas suelen ser menos pronunciadas, también bajan el nivel del mar, provocando que la playa desaparezca y el fondo del mar quede a la vista de todos. Estrellas de mar, corales y pequeños peces se dejan ver tras la retirada del agua y nos permiten disfrutar de la playa de otra manera.

Para no caer en el error y llevarte una desagradable sorpresa, lo mejor es preguntar en la recepción del hotel qué horario tiene la marea ese día. Además, en este lado de la costa, se encuentra la Isla de Mnemba, donde se sitúa la reserva marina que comparte el mismo nombre. Esta isla de pequeñas dimensiones ofrece un espectáculo único bajo el mar. Los amantes del buceo encontrarán aquí un lugar magnífico para disfrutar de esta actividad.

Playas del sur y del este, solo para aventureros En lo salvaje está la belleza, y en la aventura, la diversión. Si este es tu lema, estás en el lugar adecuado.

De verdes parajes y aguas intensas está repleta la zona sur y este de la isla, que posee innumerables playas para elegir. Pero cuidado, porque aquí las mareas son más acentuadas, y si no planeas bien tu excursión, puedes encontrarte con que el agua de la playa se ha alejado unos cuantos kilómetros de la orilla. Además, en esta zona de la isla, el oleaje es más intenso, por lo que habrá que tomar precauciones. Pero tranquilo porque la belleza está garantizada. Estas playas se consideran salvajes, menos turísticas y más hostiles, por lo que la zona es perfecta para los amantes de los deportes de aventura y la autenticidad. Buceo, windsurf, paracaidismo... son muchas las actividades que se puede realizar en las playas de Jambiani y Bwejuu, situadas en el este, o en Kizimkazi Beach, en el sur y una de las más auténticas y mejor conservada de la zona. Además, sus costas están frecuentadas por delfines que se puede avistar con gran facilidad.

Otras islas: Pemba y Mafia Zanzíbar forma parte de un archipiélago de tres islas principales y numerosos islotes que salpican la costa tanzana. Estas tres islas son la ya conocida Zanzíbar, Pemba y Mafia. Estas dos últimas son fácilmente accesibles (sobre todo desde Zanzíbar y Tanzania) a través de mar o aire y merece la pena realizar una excursión a alguna de ellas.

La isla de Pemba es conocida por el merecido nombre de la ‘Isla Siempreverde’ y sabrás por qué nada más desembarcar. Esta región, situada al norte de Zanzíbar, cuenta con una exuberante naturaleza, más montañosa y salvaje y por supuesto menos habitada, lo que la convierte en un destino paradisíaco. Además de la flora salvaje, los habitantes han sabido sacar provecho de la fertilidad de las tierras y las frecuentes lluvias, por lo que los campos de cultivo de café, de piñas, arrozales y cocoteros son muy comunes. Pero el cultivo estrella aquí, incluso más que en Zanzíbar, son las especias como el clavo, la canela, la vainilla, la cúrcuma y muchas otras más. Las playas también son únicas, bellas y solitarias, ya que son pocos los turistas que llegan hasta aquí. Los que deciden venir no solo lo hacen por su arena blanca y sus aguas cálidas, sino por la belleza que esconden sus profundidades marinas. La isla Mafia, al sur de Zanzíbar, es la más pequeña de las tres y no tiene nada que envidiar a sus vecinas.

A pesar de las posibles connotaciones negativas de su nombre propio, éste no le hace justicia al paraíso que guarda. Declarada Parque Marino en 1995 y convertida así en la mayor zona protegida de África Occidental, es un santuario de vida marina, un paraíso en la tierra y un lugar donde descansar y disfrutar del ’pole pole’, que en suajili significa despacio y sin prisa, tal y como la vida transcurre en ella. Sus aguas son únicas por sus azules y verdes y por la vida que habita en ellas. Tiburones ballena, tortugas carey, mantas raya, peces espada y miles de peces de colores se adentran en sus profundidades. Para llegar hasta aquí la cosa se complica, pero merece la pena el esfuerzo.

Solo se puede llegar por aire en algunos vuelos chárter con horario sin definir.

To become immersed in local life and understand daily life here, there are two important places to visit: the Forodhani Gardens, where residents take a break in the shade of the trees and enjoy the beautiful African sunsets, and the buzzing Darajani Market.

Although the tide is less pronounced in this part of the island, it does rise and fall, lowering the sea level and exposing the sea bed for all to see. Starfish, coral and tiny fish can be spotted as the water recedes, lending a whole new dimension to a day at the beach.

To avoid disappointment, it’s best to ask at the hotel reception about the day’s tide times. This side of the coast is also home to Mnemba island, the location of the homonymous marine reserve. What’s more, the swell is more intense in this part of the island and exercising caution is essential. But relax, because the beauty of the place is guaranteed. These beaches are more inaccessible, meaning they are unspoilt and less touristy, so this is the perfect area for those who love adventure sports and authentic places. Snorkelling, windsurfing and parachuting are just some of the countless activities to enjoy on Jambiani and Bwejuu beaches in the east or Kizimkazi beach, located in the south, and one of the most authentic and best-kept beaches in the area.

What’s more, it’s easy to spot the dolphins as they are regular visitors to the waters here.

Zanzibar is part of an archipelago of three main islands and various small islets that pepper the Tanzanian coast. The islands are the famous Zanzibar, plus Pemba and Mafia. The latter two

Pemba is also known by its well-deserved nickname, ‘Evergreen Island’, and you’ll understand why as soon as you land. Located to the north of Zanzibar, this region is full of exuberant nature. Less populous due to its wilder and more mountainous landscape, it is an unspoilt paradise to visit. As well as wild flora, the fertile soil and frequent rainfall allow locals to cultivate coffee, pineapples, rice paddies and coconuts regularly. But the star crops here, as well as in Zanzibar, are spices such as cloves, cinnamon, vanilla, turmeric and many more. The beaches are also unique, beautiful and remote, visited by the few tourists who come this way. Those who choose to visit are attracted not only by the white sands and warm waters, but also the beauty of the hidden underwater landscape. For diving enthusiasts, this is one of the most appealing spots across the whole archipelago.

Mafia island, to the south of Zanzibar, is the smallest of the three but is more than capable of holding its own. Behind the potential connotations of its name is a paradise to which words can do little justice. When it was declared a Marine Park in 1995, Mafia Island became the largest protected area in Western Africa.

It is a sanctuary for marine life, a paradise on earth and a place in which to relax and enjoy the ‘pole pole’ way of life – from the Swahili term meaning ‘slow’ and ‘no rush’. The surrounding waters have a unique blue and green colour due to the marine life that call them home. Whale sharks, hawksbill turtles, manta rays, swordfish and thousands of colourful fish visit this area. Getting here is complicated, but well worth the effort. There are just a few charter flights with no fixed timetable.

TULUM UN DESTINO QUE LO TIENE TODO A destination that has everything Bienvenidos a bordo, están a unas horas de aterrizar en el estado más bonito de México: Quintana Roo. Si! En donde se encuentran los famosos Cancún y Riviera Maya, pero también destinos como Isla Cozumel o del que hablaremos en esta ocasión Tulum.

Cuando escuchamos la palabra Tulum seguramente muchos imaginan su famosa zona arqueológica “El Castillo” la única en México construida frente al mar.

Pero Tulum no solo es su arqueología, Tulum es un destino que lo tiene todo, y me gustaría comenzar por Akumal, que en maya significa “lugar de tortugas” y es que en esta hermosa bahía podrás tener el privilegio de nadar junto con ellas para ver como se alimentan del pasto marino del caribe. Es importante recordar que para todas las actividades que se decidan hacer deben alquilar a una operadora de tours con responsabilidad, recomendamos que investiguen con anticipación y verifiquen que sea una empresa ambiental y socialmente responsable.

A los alrededores de Tulum podrás encontrar los ya conocidos cenotes, exteriores en donde puedes disfrutar de un fresco baño o de practicar Kayak como en Casa Cenote o bien Dos Ojos un sistema de ríos subterráneos adictivos para espeleólogos y fascinantes para cualquiera que se ponga unas gafas de bucear y mire a través del agua, increíbles formaciones de estalactitas y estalagmitas que invitan a adentrase al mundo maya del Xibalbá.

Si te adentras al sur de Tulum encontrarás la Biósfera de la Reserva de Sian Ka´an, un lugar esculpido por la naturaleza que ofrece, de igual manera, un sin fin de actividades, desde recorrer un canal de manglares observando vestigios mayas, aves, el cielo azul y el agua clara de la laguna de Chunyaxché. Dentro del área de Sian Ka´an también se encuentra el poblado de Punta Allen, en donde pueden tomar un tour para observar delfines, tortugas y la más variada flora y fauna del caribe mexicano, muy recomendable comer langosta, siempre respetando los tiempos de veda.

Welcome on board. In just a few hours, we will land in Mexico’s most beautiful state: Quintana Roo. Yes! Home to the famous resorts of Cancún and the Riviera Maya, but also other destinations, such as Isla Cozumel and Tulum, which we’re going to explore here.

For many people, the name Tulum conjures up an image of the famous archaeological marvel ‘El Castillo’, an incredible site in Mexico built by the sea. But Tulum is much more than just archaeology – it’s a destination that has it all. Let’s start with Akumal, which means ‘place of the turtles’ in the Mayan language. In this pretty bay, you could be lucky enough to swim alongside them and watch them feed on the Caribbean marine grass. Whatever activities you choose in Tulum, it’s important to book through a responsible tour operator.

We recommend researching companies in advance and ensuring that they operate responsibly with regard to the local people and the environment.

The area around Tulum is home to some of the bestknown outdoor cenotes (natural sinkholes), where you can enjoy a refreshing dip or go kayaking: check out Casa Cenote or Dos Ojos, a system of underground rivers. A potholers’ paradise, this is a fascinating place to put on a snorkel and peer beneath the water at the stalactites and stalagmites that invite you to delve into the Mayan underworld of Xibalbá.

There are large, outdoor, freshwater cenotes, ideal for kayaking or stand-up paddle-boarding.

The town of Tulum has been named a ‘Pueblo Mágico’ (Magical Town) and offers a range of local restaurants selling food at affordable prices, as well as bars and shops selling handicrafts. Tulum’s hotel district has grown dramatically over recent years. The majority of hotels here are eco-friendly, using solar power, composting toilets and water treatment ponds, hosting mainly tourists from Europe. The whole resort has an ‘eco-chic’ vibe, popular among celebrities and artists who help make Tulum beach one of the most beautiful places in the world. There’s a well-established night-life scene thanks to venues such as La Zebra, whose live salsa music every Sunday and buzzing atmosphere attract both tourists and locals alike. Or check out El Pez, which offers delicious international food, innovative cocktails and romantic views over the Caribbean sea.

Take a trip to the south of Tulum and you’ll find the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a place sculpted by the forces of nature with endless activities to enjoy. Take a canal trip through the mangroves to spot Mayan ruins and birds against a backdrop of blue skies and then visit the crystal-clear waters of the Chunyaxché lagoon.

The area of Sian Ka’an is also home to the village of Punta Allen, where you can join a tour to spot dolphins, turtles and the most varied flora and fauna the Mexican Caribbean has to offer, or dine out on lobster, always making sure you respect the off season.

Another micro destination close to Tulum is the archaeological site of Cobá, a Mayan settlement with a pyramid hidden in the heart of a forest. Climb to the top and enjoy impressive 360-degree views of nature.

With the help of a certified guide and a hired bike, you can learn more about the history of Cobá and its community, as well as enjoying the local cuisine, warm hospitality of the local people and tranquillity that only the forest can provide.

As well as attracting young, creative people and artists from all over the world, Tulum is also a family-friendly destination. Many of its restaurants and hotels provide cots and baby seats and are safe and accessible for little ones.

En junio 2018, la compañía celebrará su primer lustro. Evelop inauguró su trayectoria el 1 de junio de 2013 realizando su primer vuelo (Madrid – Punta Cana)

In June 2018, the company will celebrate its fifth birthday. Evelop started its journey on 1 June 2013, operating its first flight (Madrid – Punta Cana).

La compañía aérea comenzó su andadura con un Airbus A330-300 de 388 plazas que realizaba vuelos a destinos en el Caribe como Punta Cana, Varadero, Cancún o La Habana.

The story of the airline began with a 388-seat Airbus A330-300 that operated flights to destinations in the Caribbean such as Punta Cana, Varadero, Cancun and Havana.

Hoy en día, la flota de Evelop comprende un total de dos Airbus A330-300, con capacidad para 388 pasajeros, un Airbus A330-200 con 287 plazas y un Airbus A320 para 180 pasajeros. Por otra parte, la filial de Evelop en Portugal (Orbest) cuenta con un Airbus A330-300 de 388 plazas, que realiza vuelos transoceánicos desde Lisboa a destinos del Caribe.

These days the Evelop fleet acomprises a total of two Airbus A330-300s, with a capacity of 388 passengers, an Airbus A330-200 with 287 seats, and an Airbus A320 for 180 passengers. In addition, the subsidiary of Evelop in Portugal (Orbest) has an Airbus A330-300 with 388 seats, that runs transoceanic flights from Lisbon to destinations in the Caribbean.

Renovación ISO 9001 y 14001 Renewal of ISO 9001 and 14001 Evelop mantiene un compromiso constante con el medio ambiente y la calidad, fruto de ese compromiso, fue la consecución en el año 2017, por parte de SGS (Compañía líder en inspección , verificación, ensayos y certificación) de los certificados conforme a las normativas internacionales ISO 9001 “ Sistemas de gestión Calidad e ISO 14001 “ Sistemas de Gestión Medioambiental “. Estas certificaciones han sido renovadas con éxito en el año 2018.

Evelop maintains an ongoing commitment to quality and the environment. As a result of that commitment, in 2017 the company was awarded certificates by SGS (the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company) that conform to the international regulations ISO 9001 “Quality Management Systems” and ISO 14001 “Environmental Management Systems”. These certifications were successfully renewed in 2018.

Nuevo Avión Para el 2019 New Plane for 2019 Siguiendo con su línea de crecimiento y ampliación de su flota, Evelop incorporará un nuevo avión Airbus A350-900, modelo considerado hoy en día el más eficiente del mercado. Está previsto que este nuevo modelo de avión surca los cielos en el mes de marzo de 2019 con rumbo hacia los destinos estratégicos de la compañía , la incorporación de este aparato supone un indudable salto de calidad en el devenir de Evelop.

Continuing with its line of growth and expansion of its fleet, Evelop will incorporate a new Airbus A350-900 aircraft, currently considered the most efficient model on the market. It is expected that this new model of aircraft crosses the skies in March 2019 in the direction of strategic destinations of the company, the incorporation of this device is an undoubted leap in quality in the future of Evelop.

El Programa Chiloé The Chiloé Programme

Evelop y Orbest renuevan el certificado IOSA Evelop and Orbest renew their IOSA certifications Uno de los grandes hitos que marcan el inicio de 2018 para la aerolínea, es la renovación del certificado IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) otorgada por IATA. Se trata de un sistema de evaluación reconocido y aceptado internacionalmente y con dos objetivos fundamentales: mejorar la mejorar la seguridad y reducir el gran número de auditorías entre compañías aéreas. Este certificado tiene una validez de dos años y es requisito indispensable para formar parte de la Asociación Internacional de Transporte Aéreo (IATA). One of the airline’s greatest milestones in early 2018 is the renewal of its IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) certificate granted by IATA. It’s an evaluation system recognised and accepted internationally, with two fundamental objectives: improve security and reducing the large number of audits between airlines. This certificate is valid for two years and is a prerequisite for membership of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).The scope of these certifications encompasses the provision of commercial passenger and cargo transport services by the airline. Evelop obtained IATA’s security certification for the first time in 2015.

El pasado mes de marzo colaboramos con el programa Chiloé, una aventura Ultratrail de Euskal Televista. En esta ocasión Evelop fue la aerolínea encargada de llevar al presentador, chef y ultrafondista Zigor Iturrieta y a su equipo a México vía Cancún donde rodarían el documental para uno de los episodios del programa. Una vez allí, visitaron Chihuahua recorriendo sus calles e historia. Al final del periplo, Zigor participó en una prueba mítica del Ultratrail mundial donde quedó segundo en la “distancia corta” de más de 42 kilómetros.

In March, we collaborated with the Chiloé programme, an Ultratrail adventure by Euskal Televista. Evelop was the airline chosen to fly the presenter, chef and ultra runner Zigor Iturrieta and his team to Cancún in Mexico, where they were to film a documentary for one of the programme’s episodes. Once there, the team stopped in Chihuahua, touring the city’s streets and enjoying the local cuisine. At the end of the journey, Zigor took part in the legendary international Caballo Blanco Ultramarathon in Urique, where he took second place in the 'short distance' of over 42 kilometres.

ASOCIACIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE TRANSPORTE AÉREO

Evelop New Member of IATA INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION En 2017 Evelop obtuvo el certificado que le acredita como nuevo miembro de la Asociación Internacional de Transporte Aéreo (IATA), algo que permite a la aerolínea colaborar con socios estratégicos y grupos de trabajo, así como incrementar sus relaciones con la industria de la aviación. El ingreso de la aerolínea en IATA supone además de incrementar la cooperación con otras líneas aéreas, mejorar en temas de seguridad, materia económica, relaciones comerciales y colaborar en temas medioambientales, algo que es de suma importancia para la compañía.

In 2017, Evelop was accredited as a new member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) which will allow the airline to collaborate with strategic partners and work groups, as well as boost its ties within the aviation industry. We have outlined a series of exercises and some advice in order to make your flight healthier and more comfortable. These exercises will help you to counteract the effects of long haul flights.

Evelop acepta una bolsa de equipaje de mano en todos sus vuelos, incluyendo los realizados dentro de territorio español. Las dimensiones del equipaje de mano no pueden exceder de 50 x 45 x 25 cms. Y su peso no debe superar 10 kgs. No obstante, elementos como bolsos de mano, libros de bolsillo, prendas de abrigo, paraguas o bastón serán aceptados a bordo sin necesidad de ser etiquetados ni pesados.

Evelop allows passengers to bring only one piece of hand luggage onboard which should not exceed the following dimensions and weight: 50 x 45 x 25 cms, and weight cannot exceed more than 10 kgs. However objects such as handbags, paperback books, coats, umbrellas or walking sticks can be brought onboard without previously being weighed or labelled.

MEDIDAS DE SEGURIDAD SAFETY MEASURES Desde el 6 de Noviembre del 2006, la Unión Europea (UE) ha adoptado nuevas medidas de seguridad que restringen la cantidad de líquidos o sustancias de consistencia similar que los pasajeros pueden llevar consigo cuando pasan los controles de seguridad de los aeropuertos comunitarios. Estas medidas son aplicables a todos los pasajeros que salgan de los aeropuertos de la UE, independientemente de su destino.

Las nuevas medidas no limitan la adquisición por los pasajeros de estos líquidos o sustancias en las tiendas situadas más allá del punto de control donde usted muestra su tarjeta de embarque o a bordo de las aeronaves operadas por una aerolínea de la UE.

Since 6th November 2006, the European Union has adopted new security measures restricting the volume of liquids or similar substances which passengers are allowed to carry with them through security controls in European airports. These measures are applicable to all passengers leaving EU airports, regardless of their destination.

However, the new measures do not limit passengers from obtaining these liquids or substances from shops situated beyond the control point where a boarding pass must be shown, or onboard aircraft operated by a EU airline.

Sólo le está permitido llevar en su equipaje de mano pequeñas cantidades de líquidos. Estos líquidos tienen que ir en pequeños contenedores con una capacidad individual máxima de 100ml. Cada pasajero tiene que empaquetar estos contenedores en una bolsa transparente de plástico con autocierre de no más de un litro de capacidad máxima, para facilitar la inspección de estos productos en los controles de seguridad.

Los pasajeros deberán proveerse de dichas bolsas antes del inicio de su viaje. A efectos de las nuevas medidas, se consideran líquidos:

Only small amounts of liquid are allowed to be carried in the hand luggage. Such liquids must be transported in small containers, with an individual maximum capacity of 100ml. Each passenger must package these containers in a self-sealing, transparent, plastic bag, of no more than one-litre capacity to facilitate inspection of these products at security controls. Passengers must obtain such bags before beginning their journey. Liquids include:

At the airport • All liquids must be presented within the aforementioned bag, separately from hand luggage and placed in the tray provided for that purpose by security controls, to be examined by the security personnel.

• Passengers must remove their jacket and/or coat and place them in a tray. These garments must be examined separately during the inspection.

• Passengers must remove their laptop computer or any other electronic device of similar dimensions from its case, and place it in a tray to be inspected separately from its case at security controls.

What does not change?

You still can:

• Carry authorized products, including liquids and similar substances mentioned in the previous section, in your checked baggage; the new measures only affect hand luggage.

• Carry medicines and baby food in your hand luggage, for use during the trip, presenting them separately at the security controls, but not in a transparent bag.

If these products are sold in sealed bags, do not open them until your trip is finished. If you are going to continue your trip to another EU airport, do not open the sealed bag until you have left the last EU airport. All these liquids are additional to the quantities mentioned above for the plastic bag.

If you suffer from any kind of food allergy or intolerance, including nuts, we cannot guarantee that the menu offered is free from them, since it is impossible for Evelop/Orbest to guarantee this with food supply companies and/or their sub-contracted suppliers.

We are sorry to inform you that Evelop/Orbest are unable to guarantee whether or not other passengers are carrying foods that contain the products and/or derivatives to which you are allergic or intolerant.

As an indication of our concern for your wellbeing and with your prior authorisation, our cabin crew will inform the other passengers on the flight, with the intention of avoiding the consumption of the products that may cause you any kind of reaction.

Our aircrafts are cleaned regularly in accordance with the regulations for use indicated by the air transport industry, but this cleaning does not guarantee the elimination of allergens, and nor are the air filters in the aforementioned aircraft designed to eliminate said substances.

For this reason, we cannot ensure their absence or presence on board during the flight, and so we urge you to take the medical precautions you require in case of exposure.
