Son más de 1.000 kilómetros de costa puramente caribeña, lo que hace de sus playas uno de los mayores espectáculos turísticos del mundo. Pero no lo des todo por sabido: Jamaica es ríos para hacer rafting, montañas en las que abrigarse y patear, islas deshabitadas, pura vida oceánica… y hasta Brooke Shields.

It’s more than 1,000 kilometres of pure Caribbean coast make its beaches one of the best tourist sites in the world. But that’s not all: Jamaica has rivers for rafting, mountains with cool climates for you to explore, deserted islands, authentic ocean-side life… and even Brooke Shields.

Jamaica, The Luminous Island Francis Pachá Hay pocos lugares en el mundo que logren trasladar al viajero más allá de la estratosfera y que le hagan pensar que ha aterrizado, sin darse cuenta, en otro planeta. Los desiertos rojos de Namibia, el mar Muerto, la depresión del Danakil en Etiopía, la isla Ascensión… Pero ninguno es capaz de generar alrededor una sensación tan alucinantemente alienígena como Laguna Luminosa. Glistering Waters (ese es su verdadero nombre) es una masa de agua rodeada de manglares y hogar de microorganismos que emiten una luz fosforescente cuando se les agita. Al caer la noche, comienza un espectáculo único ya que, si se nada en ella, alrededor se genera una fosforescencia que, literalmente, hace brillar a quien se encuentra dentro. Lo mismo ocurre al pasar un barco, al lanzar una piedra o, sencillamente, con el movimiento de los peces, lo que provoca que toda la laguna quede salpicada de puntos de luz, pequeños leds que, si se deja volar la imaginación, remedan una película de ciencia ficción, como si un pedazo de otro mundo hubiera quedado descolgado en la Tierra. Laguna Luminosa, aparte de un auténtico espectáculo, es en realidad una metáfora del país que la alberga, Jamaica. Esta isla, un remanso de paz como ella, está compuesta por una serie de ciudades, maravillas naturales, gastronómicas y musicales y, sobre todo, por unas gentes que iluminan al viajero allá donde va. Las Blue Mountains, Patrimonio de la Humanidad, resplandecen desde lo alto para cualquier amante de la naturaleza, el senderismo, la botánica y el aire puro. Sus ciudades del norte, desde Negril al Oeste hasta Port Antonio en el Este, brillan en la mirada de sus visitantes gracias a sus playas de las mejores del Caribe sin discusión. Parques naturales, cascadas, ríos e islotes decoran sus más de 1.000 kilómetros de costa. La capital,

Kingston, refulge en una de las bahías naturales más grandes del mundo y, a lo largo de la línea costera, el más desconocido sur ofrece el color local, el recuerdo de sus primeros pobladores o de los cimarrones que huyeron de la esclavitud, el aroma de su ecléctica gastronomía (africana, europea, caribeña, americana) y de su café… Islas deshabitadas, ríos que son pacíficas pátinas por las que navegar sin prisa y, sobre todo, gente, gente y gente de la que se pueden decir muchas cosas buenas, pero que todas quedan resumidas en una expresión: One Love. Más allá de las reminiscencias de Bob Marley (junto al atleta Usain Bolt, el jamaicano más conocido), estas dos palabras son de uso común en el país a la hora de despedirse, para desearse buena suerte, para mostrar el respeto al otro o, sencillamente, para manifestar su alegría de vivir. Solo un país que brilla con luz propia podría llegar a algo así. Playas Realmente Caribeñas Parece una obviedad, pero Jamaica es Caribe puro. Es la única de las Antillas mayores rodeada exclusivamente por este mar. Y ser caribeña 100% implica maravilla tras maravilla. Si empezamos por el Oeste, Negril es la primera parada obligatoria. Solo hay que decir una cosa para quedarse enganchado a la zona: 11 kilómetros de arena blanca. Así es Seven Mile Beach, en la que dar un paseo se puede convertir en una caminata hasta el infinito, y en la que bañarse o sumergirse en sus aguas en busca de auténticos bancos de vida submarina complementa a la perfección la efervescencia generada a su alrededor gracias a las excelentes infraestructuras que la rodean. No muy lejos se encuentra Bloody Bay, más pequeña pero con aguas más profundas, en las que se puede comprobar con mayor precisión la >

transparencia del mar en toda esta zona, arropada, además, por una espesa vegetación. Si precisamente buscas también naturaleza en estado puro mientras te bañas, tres son los destinos. Primero, Rhodes Hall Plantation, situada en la desembocadura del río Orange, de aguas más templadas y un ambiente muy familiar, desde la que avistar a los cocodrilos que se pasean por la orilla del río. Tranquilidad: al ser de agua dulce, nunca van a la playa. El segundo paraíso natural: Long Bay, desprovista de hoteles o restaurantes cercanos y, por ello, de una tranquilidad pasmosa. Y, en tercer lugar, Booby Cay. En este caso se trata de un islote a solo un kilómetro de la costa, hábitat de pájaros bobos de patas azules (los jamaicanos los llaman “boobies”) y escenario del rodaje de la mítica 20.000 leguas de viaje submarino. Montego Bay, uno de los lugares más turísticos de la isla, posee en consecuencia la mayor sucesión de playas repletas de todo tipo de visitantes: Dead End Beach, Cornwall Beach, Walter Fletcher Beach (muy familiar) o Half Moon Beach, de las más exclusivas de la isla. Continuando la línea de costa, al norte, el área de Ocho Ríos acumula joyas como James Bond Beach, cuyo nombre es toda una declaración de intenciones: cualquier conocedor de las películas del agente 007 reconocerá en ella el escenario de algunas de las más conocidas. En la playa de Reggae podrás ver sin dificultad tortugas nadando a tu alrededor, mientras que en la de Crab Key Beach podrás aprovechar para hacer una visita a las famosas cascadas de Dunn’s River Falls. La lista es interminable, pero un paseo por las playas jamaicanas no estaría completo sin hablar de algunas más. En el Oeste, cerca de Port Antonio, podrás sumergirte en Blue Lagoon, el lugar en el que se rodó El lago azul, la mítica película protagonizada por Brooke Shields; la zona es una tranquila masa de aguas turquesas procedentes de los manantiales naturales a unos 55 kilómetros de profundidad y exuberante vegetación. Boston Bay, algo más hacia el sur, el mar rompe con más fuerza y, por tanto, es el reclamo perfecto para los surfistas y amantes de los deportes náuticos en general. Al sur, Treasure Beach te ratificará en tu decisión de que Jamaica es el destino perfecto para vivir playas infinitas de aguas cristalinas y arenas blancas.

Destacan las Reach Falls, cerca de Port Antonio, o las White River, en Ocho Ríos, pero sin duda las más espectaculares son las Dunn’s River Falls, donde contaréis con la opción de realizar distintas actividades guiadas: rafting, paseos en quad, rutas a caballo por el bosque y la playa… Sin salir de Ocho Ríos, podréis conocer la orígenes de la isla y de sus primeros habitantes en el parque Seville Great House and Heritage, ya que el lugar marca el punto en el que los indios taínos, hace más de 1.500 años, desembarcaron por primera vez en este pedazo de tierra. Por cierto: daos el placer de salir de las rutas habituales y de enseñar a tus hijos el lugar de origen de uno de los músicos más conocidos mundialmente: en Nine Miles, un pueblecito en las colinas de Santa Ana y a hora y media aproximadamente de Ocho Ríos, nació Bob Marley, y allí también podrás visitar su tumba. Es altamente recomendable, ya que, además, os sumergiréis en la vida más rural y verdadera de la isla, lejos de los grandes núcleos turísticos y urbanos. Te recomendamos, eso sí, que accedas hasta aquí en 4x4, porque la carretera no está en las mejores condiciones. Dos opciones más para disfrutar en familia. La primera, acuática: cualquier deporte en el agua para gente de todas las edades es posible en áreas como Montego Bay, Ocho Ríos o Negril. No podéis marcharos de aquí sin comprobar que la vida de Jamaica no solo está en su superficie. La segunda, selvática: visitad el Rainforest Bobsled Jamaica at Mystic Mountain, en Ocho Ríos, un complejo deportivo y de aventuras en mitad de la selva con tirolinas, telesillas para alcanzar las copas de los árboles, y la montaña rusa Bobsled, en la que los vagones tienen forma de trineo de bobsleigh, disciplina deportiva de invierno que, curiosamente, tiene un importante tirón en esta cálida isla.

Tú, yo y Nadie Más

Una opción que cada vez tiene más éxito entre los visitantes de la isla es hacerlo en familia. La isla se presenta como un destino preferente a la hora de disfrutar con los más pequeños, y razones no faltan. Aparte de las pequeñas excursiones (adecuadas a cada edad) que se pueden hacer por el interior de las Blue Mountains, cerca de Montego Bay se encuentra el Jamaica Swamp Safari Village, donde poder ver exóticos animales procedentes de la propia isla y de toda la zona, desde cocodrilos a monos capuchinos. Y volvemos aquí a hablar de Laguna Luminosa: ¿imaginas a tus hijos nadando en ella mientras crean, con sus propios movimientos, luz? Quedarán hipnotizados.

A estas alturas, si tu plan es en pareja, ya sabes que Jamaica es tu lugar. Las playas solitarias y paradisiacas, el espectáculo natural, restaurantes, tiendas… A todos los planes anteriores, puedes añadir un recorrido por algunos de los ríos de la isla. Si lo quieres tranquilo, solo para ver flora y fauna autóctona, te recomendamos hacerlo en una barcaza a lo largo del Black River. Si prefieres descargar adrenalina, saltad los rápidos del Martha Brae River haciendo rafting. Si optas por la tranquilidad, alquila para tu pareja una canoa típica en Río Grande, hecha de cañas de bambú, y olvidaos de todo. Eso sí: si solo tienes tiempo para un paseo inolvidable, acércate a Navy Island, frente a la costa de Port Antonio. Allí todo es silencio y tranquilidad, por lo que, si vas de luna de miel, es

QUÉ NO TE PUEDES PERDER LOS ACANTILADOS DE NEGRIL Roca negra de coral que baja abruptamente hasta un mar de aguas turquesas, repletas de vida y donde nadar es solamente la excusa para sentirse en otro mundo. BLUE MOUNTAINS Son Patrimonio de la Humanidad y una de las zonas más ricas en biodiversidad del Caribe. No puedes irte de ellas sin tomar un buen café de los cultivados en sus faldas. REGGAE No hay excusa: en Jamaica hay que vivir un concierto de esta música, con músicos locales que parecen haber nacido por y para este ritmo caribeño. ¡One Love!

el lugar idóneo para olvidaros de todo y de todos. Hay, además, dos ciudades cuya área circundante y opciones de diversión y relax hacen que sean ideales para parejas. La primera es Negril. Además de sus playas, allí se encuentran unos espectaculares acantilados construidos por los propios corales solidificados que se sumergen en aguas turquesas llenas de vida marina. Aprovechad la visita para dar un paseo por el mercado de artesanías de la ciudad, donde comprar perlas, joyas, maderas… La otra ciudad que debéis visitar es Kingston, la capital. Construida a finales del siglo XVII, está repleta de casas tradicionales rematadas por balcones y terrazas llenas de flores y plantas, clásicas casonas de hace más de dos siglos y, sobre todo, por una mezcolanza de gente como solo en una capital se puede ver. Pasear la ciudad es un placer, aunque te recomendamos que siempre vayas por zonas seguras, con vigilancia y nunca adentrarte más allá de las zonas más habitadas. Antes de marcharos, tenéis que dar el salto a la isla deshabitada de Lime Cay, a la que llegar por unos pocos dólares en la embarcación de cualquier marinero del puerto. La tranquilidad y la paz de un lugar sin apenas gente no te la vamos a describir nosotros…

Cultura Gastronómica y Musical Teniendo en cuenta que Jamaica es un tapiz de influencias de todo tipo, su gastronomía resulta, por ello, muy interesante. A los productos locales se unen las tradiciones culinarias importadas de África, Europa y de parte del resto de América, a lo que se suma la fertilidad de la tierra en forma de frutas (¡benditos zumos!) y verduras de todo tipo y a una riqueza marina en forma de pescados y mariscos sin parangón. No olvides que el café de Jamaica (que se cultiva en las Blue Mountains, cuyo pico más alto se encuentra a más de 2.200 metros) y su ron son de los mejores del mundo. La música de la isla pasa, indefectiblemente, por el reggae. Dedica unos minutos de tu viaje a entrar en locales de Negril y Kingston fundamentalmente y empaparte de esta música que, poco a poco, va mezclando estilos y, sus artistas, aportando su granito de arena para enriquecerlo. Otra forma de comprobar cómo esta isla brilla con luz propia. •

Francis Pachá There are few places in the world that manage to transport the traveller beyond the stratosphere and make them think that they have landed, without realising it, on another planet. The red deserts of Namibia, the Dead Sea, the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, Ascension Island… none of these is capable of coming close to generating such an amazing, other worldly experience as Luminous Lagoon. Glistening Waters (its actual name) is a body of water surrounded by mangroves and is home to microorganisms that emit phosphorescent light when the water around them is agitated. A unique phenomenon is triggered at nightfall: if you swim in these waters, a phosphorescent glow emerges that will literally make anyone who happens to be in them shine. This can also be triggered by a boat passing by, the throw of a stone, or simply the movement of fish, all of which can cause the whole lagoon to be dappled with small dots of light, small LEDs that, if you set your imagination free, will remind you of a sci-fi movie, as if something from another world had fell on to earth. is really a metaphor for the country it calls home, Jamaica. This island, the peaceful haven that it is, is composed of a series of cities, natural wonders, cuisines and styles of music, and, above all, locals that light up the traveller wherever they go. The Blue Mountains, a World Heritage Site, shimmer from on high for any lover of nature, hiking, botany and fresh air. Its northern cities, from Negril to Port Antonio in the east, glisten in the eyes of its visitors thanks to their beaches, which are among the best in the Caribbean without question. Natural parks, waterfalls, rivers and islets decorate the more than 1,000 kilometres of coast. The capital, Kingston, shines in one of the largest natural bays in the world, and along the coastline the lesser known south offers a local flavour, a reminder of the original settlers or the maroons who fled slavery, the smell of the eclectic cuisine (African, European, Caribbean, American) and its coffee… Deserted islands, rivers that are calm patinas through which to navigate at a leisurely pace and, above all, people, people and more people that one could speak very highly of, but that can be summed up in one phrase: One Love. You can’t leave them without having a coffee that’s been cultivated in their foothills. REGGAE There’s no excuse: you must experience a reggae concert in Jamaica, with local musicians who seem to have been bred by and for this Caribbean rhythm. One Love!

Truly Caribbean Beaches

My Jamaican Family

It goes without saying that Jamaica is pure Caribbean. It’s the only one of the major Antilles that is exclusively surrounded by this sea. And being 100% Caribbean implies one wonder after another.

One option that is becoming more and more popular among visitors to the island is doing so as a family. The island presents itself as a favoured destination for those enjoying themselves with their young children, for all manner of reasons. Aside from the short excursions (suitable for all ages) that you can go on in the hinterland of the Blue Mountains, near Montego Bay you can find Jamaica Swamp Safari Village, where you can see exotic animals that are native to the island itself as well as from other parts of the region, from crocodiles to capuchin monkeys. And now let’s get back to Luminous Lagoon: can you imagine your children swimming here as they create light with their own movements? They’ll be mesmerised.

If we start in the west, Negril is the first must-see stop. Only one thing needs to be mentioned to be hooked on this area: 11 kilometres of white sand. That’s Seven Mile Beach all over, where going for a walk can turn into a trek to the infinite, and where bathing or submerging yourself in its waters in search of authentic shoals of underwater life adds to the perfection, to the effervescence generated in its surrounds, thanks to the excellent infrastructure around them. You’ll find Bloody Bay nearby, smaller but with deeper waters, where you can check out the transparency of the sea throughout the area, which is also wrapped in thick vegetation. If you’re also specifically on the lookout for untouched nature while you bathe, there are three places for you. Firstly, Rhodes Hall Plantation, located at the mouth of the Orange river, with more temperate waters and a familial atmosphere, where you can spy crocodiles that walk around the banks of the river. Rest assured, being fresh water crocodiles, they never go to the beach. The second natural paradise: Long Bay, a place devoid of nearby hotels and restaurants, boasts a staggering peacefulness. And thirdly, Booby Cay. An islet only one kilometre from the coast, the habitat of the blue-footed booby bird (the Jamaicans call them “boobies”) and setting of the mythical 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. With the largest stretch of beaches, Montego Bay is one of the most touristic places on the island and is full of all types of visitors: Dead End Beach, Cornwall Beach, Walter Fletcher Beach (very family-oriented) and Half Moon Beach are among the most exclusive on the island. Continuing north along the coastline, the Ocho Ríos area boasts jewels such as James Bond Beach, whose name does exactly what it says on the tin: any connoisseur of 007 will recognise this beach as the setting for some of the best known films in the franchise. On Reggae beach you’ll easily be able to see turtles swimming around you, while on Crab Key Beach you’ll be able to take the opportunity to visit the famous Dunn’s River Falls. The list is endless, but a walk through Jamaica’s beaches wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a few more. In the west, close to Port Antonio, you’ll be able to submerge yourself in the Blue Lagoon, the place where “The Blue Lagoon,” the mythical film starring Brooke Shields, was filmed; the area is a peaceful body of turquoise waters from the natural springs that are 55 kilometres deep, with lush vegetation. In Boston Bay, slightly further south, the sea crashes with more force, and as such, is the perfect lure for surfers and water sports lovers

Something that will grab your attention beyond all else are the waterfalls that are dotted around Jamaica. The Reach Falls near Port Antonio or the White River in Ocho Ríos stand out, but without doubt the most spectacular are Dunn’s River Falls, where you will have the option to do various guided activities: rafting, quad biking, horse rides through the forest and the beach… Without leaving Ocho Ríos, you’ll be able to find out about the origins of the island and its first inhabitants in the Seville Great House and Heritage Park, since the area marks the spot where the Taino Indians disembarked on this piece of land for the first time 1,500 years ago. By the way, you should give yourselves the pleasure of going off the beaten track and showing your children the birth place of one the most famous musicians in the world: in Nine Miles, a little town in the hills of Santa Ana and approximately an hour and a half from Ocho Ríos, Bob Marley was born. You can also visit his grave there. It’s highly recommended, given you will also immerse yourself in the more rural and authentic life on the island, far from the tourist and urban hubs. We do recommend that you make this trip in a 4x4, because the road in this area isn’t in the best of conditions. Two other possibilities for family fun. First – the water option: various water sports for people of all ages are on offer in areas such as Montego Bay, Ocho Ríos and Negril. You can’t leave without realising that life in Jamaica is not only about what’s on the surface. Second – the jungle option: visit the Rainforest Bobsled Jamaica at Mystic Mountain, in Ocho Ríos, a complex for sports and adventures in the middle of the jungle with zip-lines, chairlifts to reach the tops of the trees, and the Bobsled rollercoaster, where the wagons are shaped like bobsleds, a winter sport that, oddly enough, is a big deal on this hot island. The trip could turn into something special if you engage with the islanders with whom you’ll share tastes and interests and who will show you some > evelop.com 9

of the important places on the island. This is achieved thanks to the Meet the People programme, an initiative launched by the Jamaican Tourism Office. For more information: www.visitjamaica.com. Just You and Me At this point, if your plan is to tavel as a couple, it’s clear that Jamaica is the place for you. The isolated, heavenly beaches, natural scenery, restaurants and shops… you can add a stroll along some of the rivers on the island to the plans already mentioned. If you want a relaxing time, just to see native flora and fauna, we recommend doing so along the Black River in a barge. If you want to release some adrenaline, go rafting and jump the rapids of Martha Brae River. If you’re opting for relaxation, hire a traditional canoe made of bamboo sticks for your partner in Río Grande, and forget about everything else. A must: if you only have time for one unforgettable walk, get to Navy Island, opposite the coast of Port Antonio. There you’ll find everything is peace and quiet, which is why, if you’re going on a honeymoon, it’s the ideal place to forget all your worries. There are also two cities whose surrounding area and entertainment and relaxation options are ideal for couples. The first is Negril. Apart from its beaches, there you can find some spectacular cliffs made of the same solidified corals that are submerged in turquoise waters brimming with marine life. Make the most of your visit by having a stroll through the crafts market in the city, where you can buy pearls, jewels, woods... The other city that you must visit is Kingston, the 10 evelopmag

capital. Built towards the end of the 17th century, it’s full of traditional houses rounded off with balconies and terraces full of flowers and plants, classic mansions from more than two centuries ago, and above all, a mixture of people that can only be seen in a capital. Una de las rutas más bellas conduce a las cataratas de Tamarin, y otra, a las cascadas Exil. En plena selva subtropical húmeda, las gargantas de la Riviere Noir y la reserva natural de Domaine de Bel Ombre son lugares espectaculares., y en la la selva de Macchabée se puede practicar barranquismo, descenso de cañones, o rappel en cascadas. En el sureste de la isla, el Parque Nacional de Black River Gorges, es el último reducto verde y virgen de Mauricio, y muy cerca se encuentra la cascada de Chamarel, sobre un escarpado espectacular que fuera antiguo refugio de los esclavos para huir de su destino final, tan asombrosa como lo es la Tierra de los Siete Colores, un enigmático lugar salpicado de voluptuosos montículos y formas redondeadas por la acción de los vientos, y que parece un capricho de pintor con toda clase de tonalidades -ocres, rojizas, naranjas, verdes…- para el que no se ha logrado encontrar una explicación científica, aunque la opinión más extendida nos dice que su formación se debe a las cenizas volcánicas muy ricas en minerales y coloreadas por el efecto de la oxidación. Y, desde luego, otro gran lugar mágico de Isla Mauricio: la Isla de los Ciervos, la más sorprendente de los islotes e islas paradísiacos que rodean Isla Mauricio. Con algo más de 300 hectáreas, la Isla de los Ciervos maravilla a cualquiera por sus

playas de arena extremadamente blanca en un mar cristalino que forma piscinas naturales de color azul cobalto sin olas (ideales para disfrutar en familia). ¡Playa a la Vista! De todas las playas de Mauricio, las más espectaculares se encuentran en la costa este, más salvaje y menos desarrollada que otros tramos de litoral de la isla. Finally, at the Kids Adventure Park, kids will love flying along a zipline, driving go-karts, or riding jet-skis or ponies. All of this takes place in the heart of nature, where different protected animal species coexist within a rich natural habitat. Of course, the other magical place on Mauritius is Île aux Cerfs (Deer Island), the most surprising of all the surrounding paradise islands and islets. EL CARIBE MEXICANO Y SUS RÍOS SUBTERRÁNEOS The Mexican Caribbean and its Underground Rivers La Cultura ancestral y las bellezas naturales del Caribe Mexicano impactan a cualquier visitante, no importa la nacionalidad, la edad o los gustos, la cultura y la naturaleza son las dos razones por las cuales la Península de Yucatán es tan admirada en el mundo entero. Y es por esta razón que hacemos un llamado al viajero responsable, a quién se interesa en el destino antes de visitarlo, quién desea convertir su viaje en una experiencia, y para lograrlo hay que estudiar antes de poner pie en ese lugar de nuestros sueños.

La cueva fue denominada Hoyo Negro por sus características y visibilidad. Definitivamente es un eslabón que nos faltaba para confirmar que los primeros pobladores de América vienen de Siberia, pasaron por el estrecho de Bering y en el continente se fueron adaptando. Además se han encontrado restos de 26 mamíferos correspondientes al pleistoceno tardío.

La historia de la formación de nuestros sagrados cenotes es interesante e indispensable conocer, mucho mejor si es antes de viajar, así podrán admirarse aún más al nadar en sus cristalinas aguas. Todo nace con el meteorito de Chicxulub, en la época de los dinosaurios, cuando los humanos no habitábamos en el planeta y como efecto de una velocidad de 250km por hora se lograron las formaciones geológicas tan extraordinarias que hoy en día conocemos y que los mayas llamaron el MAYAB.

El Caribe Mexicano es fascinante, lleno de historias de la prehistoria, de los mayas, de los temibles piratas, conquistas y rebeliones. Una imperdible historia a cerca de la Guerra de Castas que pueden encontrar en la Zona Maya, en el pueblo de Tihosuco, en donde aún se vive de forma tradicional y sus habitantes dan la bienvenida a un turismo muy selectivo.

Si nos transportamos al momento del impacto de este meteorito a 40km al norte-nororiente de la Ciudad de Mérida, podríamos imaginarnos como fue la fricción del meteoro que de 10 a 15 segundos formó un enorme agujero de 200 km de diámetro, y 25km de profundidad, pulverizando todo y dejando millones de pedazos por el suelo y enfriando hasta convertir en roca caliza todos los organismos marinos que vivían en esa época. Esto también dio forma a las cuevas y cavernas conocidas como cenotes, impresionantes ríos subterráneos kársticos que crean una placa gigante en forma de queso gruyere, formando lo que es hoy la Península de Yucatán. Los cenotes son la entrada al sistema de ríos subterráneos, lo que está registrado en la región de Quintana Roo, sobre todo en el sistema Sac Ak Tun supera los 1300 km de zonas exploradas por buzos voluntarios espeleólogos, siendo esto ni si quiera el 20% de lo que puede existir bajo el agua. Todo es un sistema que está conectado, el agua dulce, el agua salada del mar, el arrecife, los manglares y esto significa que hay que cuidar el impacto del turismo en la zona, conservar las fuentes de agua, construir de forma ecológica, con baños secos, humedales. Uno de los hallazgos más increíbles de los últimos años fue el descubrimiento de Naia, un esqueleto humano descubierto en una cueva de Quintana Roo con más de 13,000 millones de años. Naia es su nombre en alusión por la ninfa llamada Naia que en la mitología griega está asociada al cuidado del 26 evelopmag

The ancestral culture and natural beauty of the Mexican Caribbean leaves a lasting impression on all visitors, regardless of their nationality, age or tastes – culture and nature are the two reasons why the Yucatán Peninsula is so admired throughout the world. That’s why we’re calling on the responsible traveller, to those who take an interest in their travel destination before visiting, those who want to turn their trip into an experience. Doing so means doing a bit of research before setting foot in this dream destination. The history of the formation of our sacred cenotes is interesting, essential knowledge. Finding out before travelling is the best way, so that you can admire them all the more as you swim through their crystal-clear waters. It all started in the dinosaur age, when humans did not yet walk the earth. With the impact of the Chicxulub meteorite, travelling at a speed of 250 km/h, the peculiar geological formations that we know today, called MAYAB by the Mayans, were formed. If we transport ourselves back to the moment of impact of this meteorite, 40 km to the northnortheast of the city of Mérida, we could imagine what the friction of a meteor that formed an enormous hole 200 km in diameter and 25 km in depth in the space of 10–15 seconds was like. It pulverised everything and left millions of pieces of debris on the ground and cooled things to the extent of turning all marine organisms that lived in that time into limestone. This also formed the caves and caverns known as cenotes; impressive underground, karst rivers that create a gigantic plate in the shape of gruyere cheese, forming what is today the Yucatán Peninsula. The cenotes are the entrance to a system of underground rivers, which is registered in the Quintana Roo region. Particularly in the Sac Ak Tun system, more than 1,300 km of areas have been explored by volunteer speleologist divers. Even this is less than 20% of what lies beneath the water. Everything is part of a connected system – fresh water, salt water from the sea, the reef and the mangroves, and this means that care must be taken to manage the impact of tourism in the area, to conserve the water sources and to build in an ecological manner, with earth closets and wetlands. One of the most incredible findings of the last few years was the discovery of Naia, a human skeleton discovered in a more than 13 billion-year-old cave in Quintana Roo. Its name, Naia, is an allusion to the nymph of the same name in Greek mythology, which is associated with conserving water. The skeleton belongs to a youth between 15 and 16 years old who died in a cave that flooded, and whose remains are the oldest ever found in the new world. The cave was named Hoyo Negro because of its characteristics and visibility. It was definitely a missing link that helped to confirm that the first peoples of the Americas came from Siberia, crossing the Bering Strait and adapting to the continent. Airlines, la aerolínea de Barceló Viajes, ha recibido por parte de SGS, compañía líder en inspección, verificación, ensayos y certificación, los certificados conforme a las Normas Internacionales ISO 9001 “Sistemas de Gestión de Calidad” e ISO 14001 “Sistemas de Gestión Medioambiental”, en un acto celebrado en Palma de Mallorca en el que estuvieron presentes, entre otros, Bruno Claeys, director de EVELOP! Airlines y Peter Hvidberg, Global Head | Travel&Hospitality de SGS.

Airlines, Barceló Viajes’s airline, has received from SGS, a leading company in inspection, monitoring, testing and certification, International Standardised certificates ISO 9001 “Quality Management Systems” and ISO 14001 “Environmental management Systems”, in an event held in Palma de Mallorca which was attended by, among other, Bruno Claeys, director of EVELOP! Airlines and Peter Hvidberg, Global Head | Travel&Hospitality at SGS.

Airlines en la prestación de un servicio de Calidad y comprometido con la protección del Medioambiente se han entregado a la aerolínea después de una auditoría de “Cero conformidades”. Tal y como acredita SGS, una compañía con más de 90.000 empleados y una red de más de 2.000 sedes, EVELOP! Airlines ha cumplido todos los requisitos sin tener que modificar ningún defecto ni subsanar ninguna deficiencia durante todo el proceso. El alcance de la auditoría realizada por SGS, engloba “La prestación de servicios de transporte aéreo comercial de pasajeros y mercancías”. El certificado SGS conforme a la Norma Internacional ISO 14001 de Sistemas de Gestión Medioambiental, acredita que Evelop!, que cuenta con 3 Airbus 330 y 2 Airbus 320, cumple con los requisitos que establece dicha norma y que ha implantado un sistema de gestión ambiental que ayuda a prevenir los impactos ambientales. Por su parte, el certificado SGS conforme a la Norma Internacional ISO 9001 de Sistemas de Gestión de Calidad aporta un enfoque con una estructura de Alto Nivel, facilitando su integración con los demás sistemas de gestión descritos en las normas internaciones ISO. These certificates, which highlight the commitment that EVELOP! Airlines has to the provision of Quality service and to Environmental protection, were presented to the airline after an assessment found “Zero non-conformances”. As certified by SGS, a company with more than 90,000 employees and a network of over 2,000 offices, EVELOP! Airlines has fulfilled all of the requirements without having to modify any failings or rectify a single defect throughout the process. The extent of the assessment carried out by SGS includes “The provision of commercial airline transport service for both passengers and goods”. The SGS certificate is consistent with International Standard ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems and certifies that Evelop!, with its 3 Airbus 330s and 2 Airbus 320s, satisfies the requirements set out by said standard and that it has introduced a management system that helps prevent environmental impact. The SGS certificate which is consistent with International Standards ISO 9001 in regard to Quality management Systems provides a focus on a High Level structure, allowing for easier integration with other management systems outlined in the international standards ISO. This certificate recognises that EVELOP! fulfils the requirements set out by the Standard and that it has introduced a System which encourages continual improvement.

• Avoid crossing your legs when you are seated.

• Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol and coffee.

Siguiendo normas internacionales de seguridad, antes del despegue, nuestra tripulación de cabina realizará una demostración sobre el uso de mascarillas de oxígeno, cinturones de seguridad, chalecos salvavidas y localización de salidas de emergencia. Asimismo les emplazamos a que lean con atención las instrucciones de seguridad colocadas en el bolsillo de su asiento.

Following international safety standards, our cabin crew will carry out a pre-flight demonstration in order to show you the location and use of oxygen masks, seat belts, life jackets and emergency exits. Please read the safety pamphlet stored in the seat pocket in front of you.

Evelop acepta una bolsa de equipaje de mano en todos sus vuelos, incluyendo los realizados dentro de territorio español. Las dimensiones del equipaje de mano no pueden exceder de 50 x 45 x 25 cms. Y su peso no debe superar 10 kgs. No obstante, elementos como bolsos de mano, libros de bolsillo, prendas de abrigo, paraguas o bastón serán aceptados a bordo sin necesidad de ser etiquetados ni pesados.

Evelop allows passengers to bring only one piece of hand luggage onboard which should not exceed the following dimensions and weight: 50 x 45 x 25 cms, and weight cannot exceed more than 10 kgs. However objects such as handbags, paperback books, coats, umbrellas or walking sticks can be brought onboard without previously being weighed or labelled.

The only alcoholic beverages allowed to be consumed on the aircraft are those served by our cabin crew during the bar service. It is strictly prohibited to consume alcoholic beverages brought onboard by the passenger or purchased during the onboard sales service.

Para su información, productos como arena de playa o café en su equipaje facturado pueden conllevar inspecciones por las autoridades aduaneras requiriendo su presencia para chequear el contenido de su maleta. Para evitar molestias y retrasos les recomendamos lo trasporten en su equipaje de mano.

For your information, having products such as beach sand or coffee in your checked luggage can result in inspection by customs authorities that will then require your presence in order to check your suitcase’s contents. To avoid inconveniences or delays we recommend that you transport these products in your carry-on luggage.

Desde el 6 de Noviembre de 2006 la Unión Europea ha adoptado nuevas medidas de seguridad restringiendo la cantidad de líquidos o sustancias similares que los pasajeros pueden llevar consigo al pasar los controles de seguridad de los aeropuertos Europeos. Since 6th November 2006, the EU has adopted new security measures restricting the quantity of liquids or similar substances which passengers can take with them to go through the security controls of European airports. For more information please ask our cabin crew.

En nuestros vuelos intercontinentales y europeos y en todos los que tienen origen o destino Canarias, disponemos de música y cine a bordo. Para poder disfrutarlo le ofrecemos auriculares al precio de 4 Euros. Estos auriculares son compatibles con la mayoría de aparatos electrónicos.

A comprehensive selection of audio and video programmes are available to our passengers on all intercontinental flights and most European flights from mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands. In order to enjoy this service, headsets are available on request at the price of 4 Euros. These headsets are compatible with most electronic systems.

Los menores de 5 años han de viajar con adulto sentado al lado y nunca en salidas de emergencia. De 5 a 12 años pueden ir sentados con un pasajero de mas de 16 años , pero nunca en salidas de emergencia.

Minors under the age of five must travel with an adult seated beside them and must never be seated at emergency exits. From the ages of 5 to 12, they may travel while seated with a passenger over the age of 16, but never at emergency exits.

MEDIDAS DE SEGURIDAD SAFETY MEASURES Desde el 6 de Noviembre del 2006, la Unión Europea (UE) ha adoptado nuevas medidas de seguridad que restringen la cantidad de líquidos o sustancias de consistencia similar que los pasajeros pueden llevar consigo cuando pasan los controles de seguridad de los aeropuertos comunitarios. Estas medidas son aplicables a todos los pasajeros que salgan de los aeropuertos de la UE, independientemente de su destino. Las nuevas medidas no limitan la adquisición por los pasajeros de estos líquidos o sustancias en las tiendas situadas más allá del punto de control donde usted muestra su tarjeta de embarque o a bordo de las aeronaves operadas por una aerolínea de la UE.

Since 6th November 2006, the European Union has adopted new security measures restricting the volume of liquids or similar substances which passengers are allowed to carry with them through security controls in European airports. These measures are applicable to all passengers leaving EU airports, regardless of their destination. However, the new measures do not limit passengers from obtaining these liquids or substances from shops situated beyond the control point where a boarding pass must be shown, or onboard aircraft operated by a EU airline.

¿Qué es nuevo?

What is new?

Sólo le está permitido llevar en su equipaje de mano pequeñas cantidades de líquidos. Estos líquidos tienen que ir en pequeños contenedores con una capacidad individual máxima de 100ml. Cada pasajero tiene que empaquetar estos contenedores en una bolsa transparente de plástico con autocierre de no más de un litro de capacidad máxima, para facilitar la inspección de estos productos en los controles de seguridad. Los pasajeros deberán proveerse de dichas bolsas antes del inicio de su viaje. A efectos de las nuevas medidas, se consideran líquidos:

Only small amounts of liquid are allowed to be carried in the hand luggage. Such liquids must be transported in small containers, with an individual maximum capacity of 100ml. Each passenger must package these containers in a self-sealing, transparent, plastic bag, of no more than one-litre capacity to facilitate inspection of these products at security controls. Passengers must obtain such bags before beginning their journey. Liquids include:

While preparing your luggage:

• Water and other drinks, soups, syrups • Creams, lotions and oils, including toothpaste • Perfumes • Gels, such as shower gel or shampoo • Content of pressurised containers, including shaving foam and other foams and deodorants • Aerosols • Any other substance of a similar consistency

At the airport • All liquids must be presented within the aforementioned bag, separately from hand luggage and placed in the tray provided for that purpose by security controls, to be examined by the security personnel. • Passengers must remove their jacket and/or coat and place them in a tray. These garments must be examined separately during the inspection. • Passengers must remove their laptop computer or any other electronic device of similar dimensions from its case, and place it in a tray to be inspected separately from its case at security controls.

• Carry authorized products, including liquids and similar substances mentioned in the previous section, in your checked baggage; the new measures only affect hand luggage.

• Llevar los productos autorizados, incluidos los líquidos y sustancias relacionados en el apartado anterior, en las maletas que usted factura; las nuevas medidas sólo afectan al equipaje de mano.

• Carry medicines and baby food in your hand luggage, for use during the trip, presenting them separately at the security controls, but not in a transparent bag.

• Llevar en su equipaje de mano medicinas y comida para bebés, para su uso durante el viaje, presentándolos separadamente en los controles de seguridad, pero no dentro de la bolsa transparente.

• Buy liquids such as beverages and perfumes from shops situated beyond the control point or on board aircrafts operated by an EU airline.

• Comprar líquidos como bebidas y perfumes, bien en cualquier tienda de los aeropuertos de la UE cuando éstas estén situadas más allá del punto de control de seguridad o bien a bordo de una aeronave operada por una aerolínea europea.

If these products are sold in sealed bags, do not open them until your trip is finished. If you are going to continue your trip to another EU airport, do not open the sealed bag until you have left the last EU airport. All these liquids are additional to the quantities mentioned above for the plastic bag.

Si estos productos son vendidos en bolsas selladas, no las abra hasta que no haya finalizado su viaje. Si usted va a continuar su viaje en otro aeropuerto de la UE, no abra esta bolsa sellada hasta que haya salido del último aeropuerto comunitario. Lamentamos informarles que por parte de Evelop/Orbest no es posible garantizar que otros pasajeros lleven alimentos conteniendo los productos y/o derivados a los que usted sea alérgico o intolerante. We are sorry to inform you that Evelop/Orbest are unable to guarantee whether or not other passengers are carrying foods that contain the products and/or derivatives to which you are allergic or intolerant. As an indication of our concern for your wellbeing and with your prior authorisation, our cabin crew will inform the other passengers on the flight, with the intention of avoiding the consumption of the products that may cause you any kind of reaction. Our aircraft are cleaned regularly in accordance with the regulations for use indicated by the air transport industry, but this cleaning does not guarantee the elimination of allergens, and nor are the air filters in the aforementioned aircraft designed to eliminate said substances. For this reason, we cannot ensure their absence or presence on board during the flight, and so we urge you to take the medical precautions you require in case of exposure.
