ulture, History, Bespoke Experiences and Pride of Origin, are only few of the common sensibilities between Europe as a destination and Indian Weddings. Its no wonder then that Europe has quickly become a favourite, for a Destination Wedding for Indians. There is undoubtedly many economic and market situations too that are responsible for the shift of weddings west wards. The currency Demonetization surely is one too. But its encouraging to see that wedding planners as a group are still not loosing out in such a big manner, since now more try their hand in managing weddings offshore. International Destinations on the other hand are the benefactors of the wealthiest event spenders in India looking to host their big celebrations there. With international status and top recognition from suppliers across regions in Europe and the World, it seems the Indian Wedding industry is only getting started! karishma@eventfaqs.com

THE SPANISH WELCOME GALA The celebrations began with a Spanish-themed dinner welcoming the guests to the host country! The event took place at Finca Mas Solers on the outskirts of Barcelona. ‘La velada Española’ as it was named, was a glamorous night decked in hues of red, black and white. Exquisite florals were used to bring out the innate beauty of the venue. Guests were welcomed by Iconos Barcelona; with artistes dressed as famous icons of Spain like Gaudi, Picasso, etc. They were then entertained by a performance featuring the local genre of music, Rumba Catalana, and flamenco dancers. The act culminated with a fusion between the Spanish singers and dancers, and Indian acoustic singer, Alwyn Dsouza, who created melodies that have never been heard before! Following, Batucada drummers then took over the stage adding vibrancy to the evening with their African twist to samba. A surprise dance by the couple on the beautiful song, Gerua, created the perfect romantic moment. An Indo-Spanish dance act, a jalsa of sorts, was the finale act of the evening with a specialized track created with a fusion of Spanish and Hindi music, which geared everyone for a night full of enjoyment. Paris House Addict that flew down especially from France, spun popular tracks until dawn and surely made day one memorable for the guests from various parts of the world.

THE INTIMATE BRUNCH An intimate brunch took place on the morning of September 23 at 'The Rooftop'. The couple renewed their wedding vows in front of all the guests. This was followed by an energetic performance by singer Desiree Diouf. THE COLOURFUL FUSION MEHENDI The Mehendi took place at a vinery called Cavas Codorniu Lawns featuring wine barrels and rustic décor elements. The theme for the evening was an Indian fused flea market with a European touch. The venue was adorned in shades of green, yellow, orange and pink. Beautiful gazebos were spread across the mesmerizing vinery, and umbrellas with low seating were integrated. Traditional Indian hand carts were used for the lavish buffet. Women applied henna, while others danced to the beats of the passionate Dholwalas. Celebrated DJ Raj was roped in by Wedniksha for the event. Acoustic singer, Alwyn Dsouza sang old and new Bollywood songs and all the guests came together to sing along with him. Caricature artistes, Poker girls and other interactive entertainers were also roped in for the event.

What makes our vinery the perfect choice for Indian weddings is the combination of history, gastronomy and art. Codorniu is synonymous to the history of a family of winegrowers which goes back to the XVI century. It is the oldest family business in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. It now has 450 years of history behind it. Chosing Codorniu, the client will get a slice of history with modern facilities, along with experiencing the cava and wine tradition and the mesmerizing landscape. THE ROMANTIC GALA DINNER FEATURING INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT This event marked the end of the grand celebrations in Barcelona. It was held at the Cavas Codorniu Cellar. 'Romantic Earthy' was the feel created by Wedniksha for the night. Decor featured hues of white, natural greens and silver. An interactive LED bar was set up with LED pillars, which stood out in the dark. Candelabras and candles lit up the entire venue, making it look extremely dreamy. Exquisite floral centerpieces were placed on tables to add to the glamour of the night. An alluring flower panel stage was created which was much in tandem with the overall decor. Our imaginative team offers tailor-made services relating to luxury transfers, flowers and decoration, photographers and other complementary services in order to make the organization process for the planner less stressful.

Nicole Band kickstarted the evening with a heart-warming performance. A toast was raised to the newlyweds, and the Cavas champagne girls served champagne to the attending guests. The celebrations continued till the wee hours of the morning with Paris House Addict spinning popular tracks.

Park Hyatt Goa Sees Delightful Wedding By Purple Tree Events! This 2-day wedding extravaganza shot by Ramit Batra Photography featured awe-inspiring setups, unique decor and fun elements. The celebrations as part of this wedding took place at Park Hyatt, Goa over two days and featured awe-inspiring setups, unique decor and fun elements designed and produced by leading Goa-based wedding planning company, Purple Tree Events. Here's a round -up of the extravaganza that has been shot beautifully by leading wedding photographer, Ramit Batra.

The Goan M e he ndi Su nd ow ner The celebrations commenced with a Mehendi Sundowner which was a fun, casual event exuding an authentic Goan feel. The venue featured lots of palm trees, and the theme centred on the teal and yellow colours. The event had lots of fun elements such as beer pong, swings decorated with flowers and foliage, a custom-made bar menu, caricature artists and spa treats. The lush lawns of the hotel were accentuated with teal and yellow accents such as divan cushions at the seating area, a blue bicycle with yellow marigold strands and pretty bottles on tables. Even the outfits of the dhol drummers featured the same kitsch colour scheme. 12

The Great Gat sby Coc ktai l Nig h t This gala showcased a Great Gatsby theme where guests were seen dressed in gowns and tuxedos. Black and gold were the colours that ruled the night. The focus of the night was on drinking and dancing!

Since this was a destination wedding, Shagun (the bride) and I met just once before the wedding. However, we spent numerous hours discussing over the phone and sending emails to each other trying to get the details right, be it decor, entries for each function or managing the guest list and most importantly trying to understand her subtle yet quirky taste. Park Hyatt on the other hand was a dream to work with and left no stone unturned to make her dreams a reality! NAFISA SHEIKH AFONSO Partner, Purple Tree Events

Park Hyatt is a fabulous beach destination for weddings. Shagun & Udit's wedding was a colourful, closefamily affair and it was a treat to capture the festivities. My favourite time was spending the day before the events started, with the bride & groom to capture some beautiful portraits around the beach and the resort. RA MIT BATRA

The D r e a m y We dding This ceremony featured a mint green and pink colour palette with pops of vintage elements. The groom entered the venue in a vintage car and the bride’s brothers held a gorgeous pink parasol over her head, and her sisters held mint green parasols over their heads. The baraat procession and celebrations took place in the day, while the pheras were planned during sunset.

Perfect Planning‌ Reeva Johal, Vice President- Showtime Group discusses how perfect planning is key to executing successful large format weddings across the globe while discussing the importance of synchronization between various stakeholders working on a project.

T

here's a basic cultural difference when it comes to weddings in India and abroad. Therefore, the way weddings happen in India is very different from the way they happen abroad. This is the primary reason that a planner's work differs when planning a wedding in India as compared to planning an international wedding; and as a planner we try to bridge this cultural gap.

REE VA JOHAL Vice President-Showtime Group

At Showtime, we do events both in the country and outside of it. But the good thing is that even in India we work with international vendors. We blend the best of Indian elements when we are executing events abroad and similarly bring in the best of international talent when producing events/weddings in India. So there's a give and take relationship that is continually taking place. Being a planner, one has to balance both sides, respect the cultures and bring in the best of elements together. Speaking of another crucial aspect, I feel synchronization of the planner with vendors is of utmost importance. It is the core of planning for any event and a lot depends on it. Usually planners work with vendors who are already part of the family, who they've worked with before during other events, hence trust is important. Be it security, caterers, artists, everything needs to be in harmony for a hassle free execution. Both the vendors and the planner need to be on the same page and have a clear picture about each other. In my opinion the winning formula, especially when it comes to large format weddings is to take care of everything down to the minutest details. Whatever is going to happen at the venue absolutely needs to be on paper before, including every small detail. The basic plan, design and the execution need to be totally in sync for a large scale event. One needs to have a manual and follow it to the T. So before you hit the site, small things like team division also play a crucial role. One needs to ensure that there are no last minute decisions. As a planner, you also need to ensure that each person knows their job well. Even a little change at the stage of execution tends to have a trickle down effect. If one thing changes from the plan, it will have an effect on ten different things. Attention to detail and focus is critical. You need start from the basics in order to be able to execute a successful event. My advice would be to start doing the 'not so nice things' first, which are basically the tougher parts. This will ensure that your foundation is strong. Events and wedding planning is a great space to be in today's time. It gives you an opportunity to bring your ideas to life. And thankfully, the market is open to new things.

A PIECE OF ART! THIS CLASSY RED AND GOLD VINTAGE WEDDING WAS DESIGNED AND PRODUCED BY AHMEDABAD-BASED, AWARD-WINNING DECOR COMPANY, POOJAN DECOR!

P

oojan Decor, Ahmedabad designed and delivered this fabulous vintage wedding at Andaaz Lawn, Ahmedabad. According to the agency, the couple wanted to make their special day look like a piece of art.

The decor was kept very regal, drenched in hues of gold and red with magnificent floral arrangements in exquisite settings. Since, perfume is the most intense form of memory, Poojan Decor used tuberose as the main floral with jasmine, greens and Dutch roses to ensure that guests cherish this memory for a long time. The idea was also to bring out vintage elements in a contemporary manner. Therefore, an array of vintage details were incorporated such as brass vessels, skinned plates, wall clocks, Hyderabadi carpets, mercury votives, rustic furniture, photo frames, royal chandeliers, mirrors, rustic doors and windows. The linen, cushions and carpet were customised and printed with a motif chosen by the bride. The agency wanted the experiential journey of guests to start from the entry itself, and so it created a 'wow' element in the passage. The masterpiece was the Mandap which was 120 feet long and 60 feet wide. It was created in a way that you would have to pass through corridors to reach to the centre area connected with a space for near and dear ones of the bride and groom. To add a burst of luxury to the Mandap,11 royal chandeliers and 400 handis were suspended in the Mandap area.Â

The couple wanted us to make their wedding look like a piece of art! PINK AL DANDWAL A Director, Poojan Decor

A Whimsical Mehendi Sundowner That Will Make You Swoon!

At this extravaganza designed by Wedding Duo, there was not a single design story but a carnival of elements which were an extension of the multi-faceted personality of the bride. This gorgeous Mehendi Sundowner designed by Wedding Duo at Chattarpur, New Dlehi was inspired by the bride’s vibrant yet easy-going personality. This was not a single design story but a carnival of elements, an extension of the multi-faceted personality of this young woman. And that is how a traditional mehendi ceremony was sculpted into an off-beat sundowner, theatrical in every way! The enchanting decor is bound to make you swoon! A stunning island bar showcased the wedding monogram and oversized menus of the bride’s favourite cocktails. Lycra flowers, Edison bulbs and iron cubes were also used. The bar was also accessorized with shot towers, beer barrels, wine bottle holders and beer caddies. Further down, an elevated wooden hookah corner added a hint of decadence. Boozeworld, a full fledged bartending service company were responsible for the complete bar set up and planning 18

the liquor menu. Their well trained service staff displayed juggling and other bar top stunts with delightful flair. At the entrance, an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ inspired installation of paper flowers towered over the guests in welcome. The lawns were covered in two canopies–one black and the other, white. Under the white canopy were floral chandeliers and lounge seating. Under the black, a surreal dining setup was lit with hundreds of glowing white umbrellas suspended upside down amongst thousands of fairy lights glistening like stars in the night sky. As the backdrop to the bride’s mehendi ceremony, a wall was created out of fresh flowers while giant tea cups overflowing with roses and carnations were hung from a tree wrapped in fairy lights.

It's All In The Details... Sakshi Jerath, Director, Designs by Sakshi Jerath talks about what’s trending in decor, how meticulous detailing and a strong foundation can take a budding designer places and more!

T

oday, less is definitely more. Over the top is not being appreciated. Sometimes as decor professionals we have to make certain clients understand the limit to which decor should be extravagant/glamourous.

Attention to detailing should be the prime focus. When each design is particularly designed, sketched, coloured and then transformed to reality, it shows. Moreover I feel if the overall design is based on meticulous detailing even on small decor items, the right amount of grandeur automatically gets infused in the event. Minimalistic but detailed decor can make a huge difference as opposed to going over the top while decking up a venue with loud props and accessories in an attempt to add grandeur. SAKSHI JERATH Director, Designs by Sakshi Jerath

Speaking of trends, today designers are looking more at pastel colour palettes. I also like pastel shades but sometimes, I feel an amount of oomph is necessary to jazz up the decor. International trends are also snaking their way into the Indian design market. But I feel a mélange of our traditional designs with just a hint of internationalism works wonders for weddings. Of course, when working for a non-Indian client, one has to be cautious while incorporating traditional elements (although in my experience, they love seeing an Indian touch to their decor). Having worked with The Wedding Design Company headed by Vandana Mohan, I can certainly say that one can learn a lot from an experienced and good leader, which I was lucky to have. Exposure while working with an established enterprise can add a great deal to your experience. Having said that, making your individual name in the business of wedding decor is pretty much your own hard work and the attention you put in detailing your designs.

“AS AN ARTIST I LOVE THE VIBE AT INDIAN WEDDINGS”-JUGGY D The raging ‘British Bhangra’ artist talks about the difference between performing at private and public events, the importance of giving the client value for his buck and more! Read on.

9 out of 10 times, the wedding client makes requests for me to extend my time or sing a few more songs, etc. And I almost always do it. Reason being, a wedding is a 'once in a lifetime' kind of event. Therefore, not only is it important for an artist to give the client value for his buck, but also surpass his expectations if possible. JUGGY D

W

hile every wedding season sees popular Bollywood chartbusters of the time being played at Sangeet and Cocktail parties, numbers like ‘Sohniye Ni Sohniye’ by Juggy D have won themselves a special and permanent place at such events. Released in 2004, it is still played at almost every wedding celebration! The album called Juggy D, which features the hit single 'Sohniye' reached the UK's Top 10 national bestsellers list in the week of its release and reached 75 in the UK's national charts. To date, Juggy D is the only Punjabi album to have ever reached the Top 100 of UK national charts! Last season, London based UK Punjabi Sensation, Juggy D delivered more than 50 power packed performances at big fat Indian weddings in Delhi, Mumbai, Goa, Punjab, Thailand, Dubai, London and Kenya! Speaking about performing at weddings and private events, Juggy D says, “I love the vibe while performing at weddings, especially Indian weddings! I feel it is very important that my performance is interactive and makes the guests feel like I’m one of them and that they are part of my set.” He goes on to say, “Unlike a lot of other artists, I don't get upset if guests join me on stage while I’m performing at a wedding event. As a matter of fact, there are so many times when I jump off the stage and continue performing amidst the guests." As an artist, Juggy D finds it equally fulfilling to perform at private events, weddings or public events, clubs and concerts. Explaining

he says, “I give every performance my very best, irrespective of the format of the event. However, at a public event/concert, the set has to be way more structured and planned as opposed to a wedding. At private events, I can do songs depending on the vibe and even repeat songs on popular demand, etc. Whereas at a club gig or concert, there are various technical aspects one has to keep in mind and last minute changes are not all that simple.” Speaking of what planners can possibly do to make the experience for a performing artist better, Juggy D says, "Planners should ensure that they inform the artist about any delays, etc. in time instead of making him/her wait for his gig for hours!" Interestingly, he mentioned that he has personally faced such situations during performance at international events and his experience in India has been far more professional. Juggy D has been performing at live events since the age of 14! He made his breakthrough alongside Jay Sean in The Rishi Rich Project with record breaking chartbusters like ‘Dance with You’ and ‘Sohniye Ni Sohniye’. Juggy D has also appeared on numerous crossover singles with some of the biggest pop stars such as Madonna, Ricky Martin, Mary J Blige and Craig David. Although based in London, Juggy D is currently in Mumbai, working with Rishi Rich on songs for some upcoming Bollywood movies. He was featured with Jay Sean and Veronica in a song for superhit Bollywood movie, 'Hum Tum', the music of which was produced by Rishi Rich. He enjoys tremendous love and respect as a live singer/performer in India and Internationally. Juggy D is widely regarded as one of the most influential Punjabi artists in the UK. He is also the first Punjabi vocalist to make a dent in the UK's mainstream.

The Winning Formula: Be Original! World renowned event designer, Matteo Corvino based in Venice highlights the differences between designing Indian wedding celebrations and western weddings and explains the importance of originality in design and how that is the winning formula for aspiring designers.

I

have worked on multiple big fat Indian weddings, some in European destinations like Venice and Florence and one in the spectacular city of Udaipur.

M ATTEO CORVINO Event Designer & Wedding Planner

In my experience in designing Indian weddings and western weddings in Europe and other parts of the world, I have observed that Occidental Weddings are extremely traditional and domestic, consisting in a religious ceremony followed by a reception and it is really important to remain focused on traditions. The only event where a designer could be bring in some originality is the after dinner. Indian weddings, on the contrary, are more original, eclectic and sumptuous. Made of various happenings, always with different themes, they are also different as they feature a cheerfulness of colours, perfumes and an incredible variety of food, many times from all over the world. Occidental celebrations are more on the lines of a "black and white" movie. Very recently, I was involved in the designing of a Welcome Dinner of a Wedding in Udaipur. The client's requests were very specific. Although being in India, a very international style Welcome Dinner had to be created. To realize this event I chose a location with less Indian connotations, building an ephemeral vintage world suspended on a hill, overlooking Fateh Sagar Lake. In this case, having to build everything from zero with specific technical solutions, I had the fortune of collaborating with an extremely professional Indian society specialized in constructions and exhibitions set up rather than in weddings. With this serious and professional collaboration, step by step, I had the chance to obtain and realize the structures and decorations I imagined and tailor designed.

Coming to design trends, I feel there are always design/decor trends that are in vogue for a certain period of time. However, for me the originality of any event is most fundamental. Every time I feel a trend in the air, which threatens to standardize all events, my "rebel" instinct drives me to seek other solutions, to explore new ways. Personally I prefer to start a trend than follow one! In my opinion the winning formula is originality and, above all, the impression of uniqueness. Wedding Designing has become a trending profession with a lot of new improvised planners. As a consequence, the majority of them copy or take inspirations from the others. The suggestion I give to young professionals, who have to start and establish themselves, is to start thinking about designing from their own viewpoint. You should think as if you are designing your own wedding, for which you would certainly like to create a unique and unforgettable experience for the person you love, giving it your maximum, astonishing him/her, with the best suppliers and not going for easy solutions. For instance, floral decor, if not realized by a genius of the art, could actually trivialize an important event. Therefore it is extremely important to get the right person for the right job.

Vienna is Austrian beauty at its best. Famous for its art and music, I feel Vienna owes much of its charm and rich history to its splendid location on the banks of the beautiful Danube River. I loved the distinctive charm and flair, an effect accentuated by its fine old architecture, its famous horsecabs (Fiaker), as well as its splendid street-side cafés with Viennese coffees and treats. STEP 1: EXPERIENCING THE DESTINATION Especially when in unfamiliar territory, it becomes imperative to understand and evaluate the host destination in order to be able to deliver an impeccable experience. Explaining why this is so important Bhavnesh Sawhney, Director, Wedniksha explains, “Only once you get the real feel of the place can you really know how to go about things. The main attractions of the place should be taken into account as should local specialties.”

On paper, any mid-to-large sized first-world destination may display the potential to offer hotel brands and capacities, flight connectivity, venues, F&B offerings, décor and production vendors etc. However, the ground realities can differ when one tries to aggregate all the above relevant parameters. ADIT YA MOTWANE

DIRECTOR, MOT WANE ENTERTAINMENT AND WEDDINGS

Vandana Mohan, Director, The Wedding Design Company (WDC) adds, “One of the main benefits of doing multiple recce trips and using local vendors has been that we were able to really familiarize ourselves with the city and its laws and then plan the events keeping them in mind.” Aditya Motwane, Director, Motwane Entertainment and Weddings (MEW) stresses on the importance of the planner understanding the destination well. He says, “A planner needs to be in sync with the essence of what a potential destination has to offer a wedding client; for the simple reason that a wedding planner is the bridge between both. Planners have an ‘essentials checklist’ which determines the feasibility/appropriateness of a destination. These include an understanding of hotel brands and capacities, flight connectivity, venues, F&B offerings, décor and production vendors, etc., and of course, the economics of them all.” “On paper, any mid-to-large-sized first-world destination may display the potential to offer most of the above. However, the ground realities can differ when one tries to aggregate all the above relevant parameters,” adds Motwane. Pointing out an interesting dimension of the role of the destination in the actual experience, Elie Berchan, Director, Elie Berchan Wedding and Events Creation says, “Every destination differs from the other. For example in Santorini, as most weddings are outdoor it is nice to opt for colours like blue and yellow, whereas using a colour like yellow in Lebanon wouldn’t be as nice. Furthermore, experiencing the country and culture in which the wedding would take place can help the planner present a truly nice fusion experience taking inspirations from both the cultures the bride and groom originate from, as well as the culture of the destination.”

Outstanding weddings require exceptional flexibility, precise planning and meticulous organisation. Therefore we offer expert consulting services in terms of space design and planning, event scheduling, set-up, equipment and technology. MAGDALENA GURTNER SENIOR MANAGER-SALES &

STEP 2: IDENTIFYING THE RIGHT VENUES

Comparing venues can be one of the most complicated jobs a wedding planner has to do, but it is also where they can provide the most value to their client! Each venue you are considering will probably include different rental items, price their food and beverages differently and may figure tax, tip and service charges at different rates. VANDANA MOHAN

DIRECTOR, THE WEDDING DESIGN COMPANY

Hofburg Palace, Vienna

According to Vandana Mohan, comparing venues can be one of the most complicated jobs a wedding planner has to do, but it is also where they can provide the most value to their client! Highlighting some important factors, she says, “Each venue you are considering will probably include different rental items, price their food and beverages differently and may figure tax, tip and service charges at different rates. Some clients already decide the venues they want to use before approaching us. In other cases, we suggest venues based on the client’s needs and availability of the venue, number of guests the venue can accommodate and any restrictions that we may have to work with.” Talking about the venue selection process, Jaideep Venugopal, Director, Blue Marble Destination Services (a pioneering DMC in Malta) says, “We are not affiliated with particular venues. We have contacts at venues across the island and will always recommend the same based on the client’s needs and the nature of the celebration. The idea is to always put the clients aspirations first” While Aditya Motwane explains, “More often than not, the onus lies on the planner to access the feasibility of a venue with regards to the overall requirements of the event; we need to try our best to make it work, especially if the client is really attached to the idea of a particular venue or if other options are even less optimally suited. Eventually, the perfect spot becomes so by tweaking the event concept around till everything fits right.”

We have first class contacts and are happy to help with finding suppliers. Nevertheless we give planners and clients the freedom to choose and bring their own partner companies for their events. We also have the flexibility to make individual concepts and creative ideas come true. K ATHRIN SIEGERT

Gartenpalais Liechtenstein is a spectacular venue in Vienna that has been host to some Indian wedding celebrations in the last few years. What makes the venue an ideal choice is perhaps the fact that the palace is very well located to the most exclusive hotels of Vienna and the inner city with its impressive sights. Surrounded by a beautiful garden it offers an exclusive and private ambience for high class events and weddings. But its not only the beauty and aspiration value of a venue that lands it an Indian Wedding. Having an event-focused and professional team definitely benefits the venue positively. Kathrin Siegert, Head of Event Management, Marketing & Graphic, Gartenpalais Liechtenstein explains, “We offer a professional team with many years of experience and enthusiasm to make each wedding special and unique. Speaking of what else the venue offers to planners, Magdalena Gurtner, Senior Manager-Sales & Business Development, Hofburg Palace, Vienna says, “The festive state rooms of Hofburg Palace, Vienna ensure that the most demanding requirements can be met. Our variety of venues, which are great choices for weddings also present a optimized space plan." "Outstanding weddings require exceptional flexibility, precise planning and meticulous organisation. Therefore we offer expert consulting services in terms of space design and planning, event scheduling, set-up, equipment and technology. We can also serve as a one point contact for the planner connecting him/her with our business partners. STEP 3: THE TOURISM AUTHORITIES ADVANTAGE Tourism authorities can make the whole planning process simpler by connecting planners to the right vendors and suppliers and facilitating meetings with them. They can also help with venue finalization by making planners aware of legalities and authorizations required for locations, and also ease access to historical spots in that country.

Another important thing to be emphasized is that all the services provided by a CVB are on a complimentary basis.” Speaking along similar lines, Mercedes Garcia, Manager, Barcelona Weddings talks about how Barcelona Weddings, a tailor-made program within Turisme de Barcelona offers advisory services for the destination wedding planners community that are considering Barcelona as a wedding destination. Verena Jandak-Hollenthoner, Marketing Manager, Vienna Convention Bureau elaborates in the case specifically for Indian Weddings, “Indian weddings are a very specific kind of event, this is why we recommend to be directly in touch with local partners, who are specialized in this field. The Austrian agency Inspiria, already has a great track record with Indian weddings. In 2016, they organised the magnificent Jindal wedding in cooperation with the partners from India. A couple of years ago, they also took care of all local arrangements of another highprofile Indian wedding in the province of Salzburg. This is the kind of expertise the Convention Bureau would look to pass on to the client, so they can have the best experience the city/country can offer.” Speaking of the recent wedding WDC designed and produced in Vienna, Vandana Mohan explains, “When planning a destination wedding we have to keep in mind the local rules and regulations of the country; the same was done in Vienna. Austria as a country is bound by some stringent laws but the local authorities were very cooperative and made the process easier.” Further, Tourism Authorities also facilitate recces, especially in the cases when competing against other destinations. Sheetal Munshaw, Director, ATOUT FRANCE-France Tourism Development Agency confirmed that in their endeavour to showcase France as a contender, ATOUT FRANCE-France Tourism Development Agency is always receptive to hosting recces and familiarization trips for planners.

Moreover, in order to gear the French suppliers to cater to this niche segment, ATOUT FRANCE launched a dedicated Indian destination wedding guide which serves as a ready reckoner for the French travel and hospitality professionals to gain a better understanding of what an Indian wedding entails, the logistics as well as the cultural and symbolic nuances that provide insight and allow for a seamless exchange between the Indian family, wedding planner and travel agent with the French suppliers, receptive agents, hotels, etc.

There is naturally a big difference between Indian and western weddings and it is important the locals understand this in order to execute their tasks to perfection on the day. FOUNDER, MONTE CARLO WEDDINGS (FR ANCE)

Elaborating on the role of a Tourism Board/Convention Bureau, Sheetal Munshaw says, “We of course facilitate interactions between the planners and the local French suppliers, and also with the various regional/city bureaus. But most importantly, we also work as an interface with the Embassy and Consular services for visa facilitation. We recognize the potential of the wedding segment and have seen a rise in interest for France as an opportune wedding destination and have also been host country to some Big Fat Indian Weddings in the last few years.” Stressing on the crucial role of tourism authorities, Aditya Motwane goes on to say, “Local tourism authorities are critical. They line up choices, open doors and drive feasibility. Across Europe, the most capable people run the show. In almost all wedding projects their contribution in terms of optimizing ease of business deserves special mention.” Bhavnesh Sawhney, Director, Wedniksha adds, “The local tourism and local authorities help us get to know the destination better as they know it in and out. Just by telling them what kind of an experience we are looking for they can tell us where to go. They belong there and they know the history behind the place which gives us as planners an insight into the place quickly. They also help us meet local vendors and help us find things we cannot source easily.”

STEP 4: PARTNERING A DESTINATION MANAGEMENT COMPANY Your Partner in Crime & Your Partner in Success! That is how Aditya Motwane views the role of a DMC. He says, “The DMC provides a local face to engage all concerned such as venues, vendors, etc. and also ensures smooth continuity of workflows. The difference between engaging a DMC and not doing so is palpable. To connect with one is in the best interest of the client as well from a cost-benefit perspective.”

While suppliers can be identified through one’s own research, the DMC usually suggests the best vendors therefore adding a sort of reference to their previous work thereby giving a clear picture of their caliber. BHAVNESH SAWHNEY DIRECTOR, WEDNIKSHA

Not to mention, keeping the budget to the client’s expectation and dealing with all matters during the days of the events. I feel an expert is important when it comes to dealing with local suppliers because there is naturally a big difference between Indian and western weddings and it is important that the locals understand this in order to execute their tasks to perfection on the D-day. Bringing a team of 75 cooks from India and having them work in a typical French 5-star kitchen with the locals can be a challenge!” Speaking of another crucial part that a DMC plays in making the planning and executing process easier, Jaideep Venugopal explains, “Clients can rely on us entirely for negotiating the best prices from all types of suppliers. This I feel can take a lot of burden off the planner as well as the client.”

Over the last few years, while executing Indian events in Europe like the recent Jindal &Jasani Wedding in Vienna, we have realized the importance of the Indian market. FLORIAN WEBER

CEO, CONCEPT SOLUTIONS (VIENNA)

Agreeing, Bhavnesh Sawhney explains, “A DMC can also assist in talks and negotiations, which become especially important for Indian weddings that have varied needs. The suppliers are also identified through them, therefore making them more credible.” Speaking on similar lines Vandana Mohan says, “In addition to providing local expertise, a DMC also acts as one key contact throughout the event planning process. Often, the DMC will also be able to leverage lower prices by using their large purchasing power to negotiate for preferential rates with local vendors and suppliers. In non-English speaking countries, a DMC may also help to overcome language barriers.” Talking about his experience of working on the recent Jindal-Jasani wedding in Vienna, Stefan Heissel, Managing Director, Inspiria Event Service, an Austrian DMC, says, “It was one of the most exciting projects we have ever executed. Working together with such a huge team and people from all over the world was extremely satisfying; however, bringing them all together and executing the wedding, while being obliged to the laws of Austria, was probably the biggest of all challenges.” Throwing light on how a DMC is instrumental to a wedding’s success he says, “I think a DMC is indispensable. Indian weddings in particular, are not a common format. These are tailor-made, one-of-a kind events, which require the knowledge

D E S T I N AT I O N S | COVE R S TO RY of venues and local partners. We know all venues in depth and know what is possible to do as well as what is not. Furthermore I would describe our role as a door opener. An Indian wedding is a new challenge, for most Austrian locations and suppliers; something they have probably never done before. “Most importantly, I want to mention that as a DMC we are the quickest to react, when there are last minute requests. With more than fifteen years of experience, we know our local partners very well, and can easily find quick solutions.” added Heissel.

STEP 5: COLLABORATION AND SEAMLESS COORDINATION Collaborations are key in the wedding industry, as we've seen for years in the world of weddings. Having partners with experience is crucial to executing a wedding successfully, especially in destinations that one may know little about! Vandana Mohan goes on to state, “Coordination is key! It is crucial that there is complete transparency between the décor team and the various local vendors that we work with. To ensure smooth execution by all teams, recce trips are of great help to be able to understand what we require from the vendors and vice-versa. To make sure that everyone is on the same page, samples are particularly helpful.” Florian Weber, CEO, Concept Solutions, a Production company based in Vienna that recently worked with WDC on the much talked about Jindal-Jassani wedding speaks of his experience saying, “Over the last few years, we have realized the importance of the Indian market and therefore are open to partnering Indian wedding planners.”

Experiencing the country and culture in which the wedding would take place can help the planner present a truly nice fusion experience taking inspirations from both, the cultures the bride and groom originate from, as well as the culture of the destination. ELIE BERCHAN

DIRECTOR, ELIE BERCHAN WEDDING AND EVENTS CREATION

Bhavnesh Sawhney adds, “If it is a first time association for us with a particular vendor, we make sure we do a background check in the market to confirm the supplier’s working patterns, reliability, cost effectiveness, ability to maintain timelines, etc. Once we know he is good, we meet them and take the association further.” Similarly, Elie Berchan feels that synchronization between the planner and the vendors is the key to any successful event and disharmonious coordination could lead to disasters! He says, “Constant follow up, proper communication, checking if orders are correctly placed are all vital factors for ensuring successful co-operation. When it is the first time, it’s truly important to implement a successful communication method, as first time co-operations can turn into lifetime partnerships. I would keep in mind to meet face to face and get everything sorted out. Constant follow up is crucial.” Interestingly, Aditya Motwane says, "Coordination is almost like doing the tango together–there’s no room for error or stepping on toes. Business dealings in Europe are very clean and hassle-free overall. In the world of social media and digitization, the capabilities and experience levels of every vendor are wellestablished and communicated. And of course, endorsements by DMCs and Tourist Boards provide an added assurance.”

Clients can rely on us entirely for negotiating the best prices from all types of suppliers. This I feel can take a lot of burden off the planner as well as the client.

Europe seems to provide an endless canvas for Indian Destination Weddings. With popular capital cities like Barcelona, Paris, Berlin and Vienna being the choice for weddings, the more niche destinations like Monte Carlo, Salzburg, Bilbao have also played host to Indian weddings in the recent past. Destinations like Malta have found a permanent spot on the Wedding Map for India through the recent weddings its played host to. Further, planners are continually exploring newer destinations in Europe, with an added focus on Eastern European destinations, like Prague, Budapest and Dubrovnik, that seemingly deliver Europe’s cultural and picturesque promise with more value for money experiences. Nothing will stop the Big Fat Indian Wedding from delivering the most aspirational experiences in the most exotic and sought after destinations!

Delving Into Destination Weddings‌ Mahesh Shirodhkar, Managing Director, Tamarind Global throws light on unique international destination choices for Indian weddings, the pivotal role of Destination Management Companies while explaining how challenges differ while executing destination weddings in India v/s international locations.

E

very destination is different and comes with its own set of challenges. For a new destination, one needs to build the right local partnerships and understand the lay of the land well enough to execute a large event.

In India the product knowledge and partnerships are already strong, but internationally with every new location one must become completely well-versed with the landscape, sensitivities and opportunities. At Tamarind, the rigorous R&D process conducted by our product development team as well as our exhaustive and expanding database of researched destinations, hotels, venues and vendors in international destinations, serves as a solid starting point. Overall, once the groundwork is in place it is easier to execute an event overseas as international destinations provide for a much more process-oriented and structured environment.

M AHESH SHIRODHK AR Managing Director, Tamarind Global

There are so many minute yet crucial factors that go into the production of an event. Having a one point contact that manages every aspect from taking care of all vendors, to hospitality, artists, decor, production and logistics is extremely essential to ensure a smooth and seamless execution. Especially when it comes to destination events, it is all the more important that a DMC is involved to understand the sensitivities of the region and mitigate the possible challenges. A DMC will help tie together all the different aspects, harness the right local support and take a single point responsibility for guest hospitality, transport and turnkey event execution. Whether it be a destination wedding in India- Goa, Rajasthan etc. or an international destination wedding, both come with their fair share of challenges and advantages. The overseas infrastructure, professionalism and processes are much more supportive than those in India, which continues to be quite unstructured. However, India does provide pros with respect to labour cost and skilled labor, flexibility, creativity and talent available in the industry and cost of raw material. Speaking of destinations other than Europe there are many which I feel are great choices for Indian weddings/private celebrations. This season the Middle East seems to be the trending location. Even though it is not a new destination, it provides great weather and fabulous venues and is more accessible and less expensive than a European destination. Ras Al Khaimah, Oman and Abu Dhabi have some ideal wedding venues and infrastructure to host a large Indian wedding. Apart from these people are also exploring different places within Asia such as Azerbaijan, Turkey, Cambodia, Bali and Srilanka and even within Malaysia, unique destinations such as Kota Kinabalu are being looked at. The two main factors that play a key role in the destination decision are accessibility and infrastructure.

orking with the brief of creating something fantastical, Devika Narain & Company drew from elements of the Indian baraat, circus and other mystical fables to create this spectacular Royal Sangeet at the Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur earlier this year. Photography was handled by Stories by Joseph Radhik while F&B was managed by Umaid Bhawan Palace, Jodhpur The fort was divided into multiple areas and each section was created as a separate space. Pre-function cocktails happened at the entrance, after which guests were led by drums and fanfare in an elaborate procession to the ramparts, just in time for sunset. The entire fort was lit and dotted with diyas.

The sundowner and cocktails happened on the first rampart, from where they viewed a performance set against the backdrop of the fort! The dinner area was created like a lush oasis with tables overflowing with flowers and fruits. The arches were draped with rich velvets and revealed a large bar fashioned like a French carousel with life-sized floral animals! THE MESMERIZING MUSCAT WEDDING The brilliance of a luxurious property like Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz Carlton Hotel is truly a jewel in Muscat-the land of Coffee, Dates and Sheesha, endless blue-green seas, white sandy beaches, rocky cliffs and the most beautiful mosques! The beautiful decor and perfect execution for this wedding was handled by the Al Bustan Palace, A Ritz Carlton Hotel team in association with Rabbaz. The couple's friends and family flew down from various corners of the globe to be a part of this crazyfun weekend wedding. The Beach Pavilion at the hotel was host to the most awaited Youngster’s party, especially after the Gatsby-Style cocktail in Delhi! Everyone let their hair down with artists Micah and Reuben doing a brilliant fusion electronica. The Mehendi and Sangeet evening with Bhavya Pandit’s melodious renditions of some of the best of 70’s, 80’s and 90’s Bollywood songs was a brilliant start to the evening among other local artists performing. The Baraat was the most amazing moving-DJ-on-a-cart with a cliff backdrop! DJ Gaurav was seen spinning a mix of tracks while the super cool bride entered on groovy music with her troupe of family and friends dancing around her. Varmalas were exchanged and blessings given. Following, the beach lit up with tiny lights that looked like a million stars had been sprinkled across the sea shore, making it the perfect setting for the pheras.

Arjun and Tania have spent their formative years in the US, and intend to incorporate the fusion found in the American Melting Pot and Indian Spices. Fork N Spoon sets out on every meeting with a self designed questionnaire to assess the clients requirement. The purpose of the questionnaire is to understand fully, the emotions and the requirement behind the event. Tania Nihjawan, Director, Fork N Spoon also explained how events in India have a lot of emotional value and are a matter of prestige more often than not, hence capturing a preset questionnaire and some open ended questions ensure that the event is successful.

Cricket & Cuisines… GLIMPSES OF CRICKETER YUVRAJ SINGH’S POST-WEDDING CELEBRATIONS FEATURING CULINARY DELIGHTS BY TANDOORI NIGHTS BASED ON A THEMES LIKE CRICKET AND PUNJAB! On November 30, 2016 an intimate post-wedding dinner for close family and friends was hosted by cricketer Yuvraj Singh at his Chandigarh residence. A fun Punjabi-Lahori theme was incorporated in the culinary experience created by Tandoori Nights owing to the brief given to them by the cricketer.

On December 5, the newly-weds hosted another cocktail night at a private farmhouse in Chattarpur, New Delhi for which also the catering was handled by Tandoori Nights. The F&B at this event was based on a Cricket theme. A Cricket pitch was also seen at the venue!

Authentic Punjabi food dished out by the catering house was a smashing hit among the attending guests while a variety of smoked rustic charcoal grilled seafood was also on offer. The bar was created in an auto-rickshaw and offered a variety of exotic concoctions.

Interestingly, these culinary delights were laid out on a truck as well as a bus and the names of dishes were inspired by the cricket sport such as square cut tikka masala, over the bucket biryani, howzat jhinga, short pitch jalebi and so on!

A Woody, Countryside Mehendi-Cocktail By Moets Catering FOLLOWING THE CLIENT BRIEF, THE BUFFET DECOR WAS KEPT VERY STYLISH, COUNTRYSIDE AND MINIMALISTIC UNLIKE A TYPICAL INDIAN WEDDING CELEBRATION. Moets Catering was responsible for the F&B at this MehendiCocktail at the client’s private farmhouse in Chhatarpur, New Delhi. The client, Director of Dubai based 'Link Global Group' hosted this gorgeous afternoon mehendi followed by a musical sundowner, which started at 4pm and went on till 1 am on November 13, 2016. Therefore the catering company used wooden display and there was no use of satin or table linen. Elements like wine bottles, wooden crates, wine barrels, vending carts and wooden huts were used as part of the display. In terms of food, Moets Catering focused on live counters. The food spread was global and comprehensive with great emphasis on appetizers.

For snacks, Moets Catering also suggested Tandoori Tikkas and Kebabs which are no doubt a cliché, but certainly a must-have at Indian weddings. These included Mutton Seekh, Burrah kebabs, Galoutis etc. Interestingly, some fancy and visually appealing snacks like bacon wrapped asparagus, shrimp cocktail, crostinis, liver pate on melba toast and crispy aromatic duck rolls were served in martini glasses, soup spoons, wooden platters and individual mini bone china! Live wood-fired thin crust pizzas were hand rolled in front of the guests, while an exquisite range of freshly steamed dimsums were served in wooden carts. Live seafood grills like char grilled prawns and peppercorn pink salmon were also on offer. The Teppanyaki and sushi stations were a super-hit among most guests!

Ankita Chugh Weddings Creates a 'WOW' Moment with the 'Ganga Aarti' at Banaras Ghats, Aamby Valley City! Resembling the original sacred waterfront by the Ganges, the venue spans over 5158 square feet and provides the perfect backdrop for a special event.

T

his is what we call "Divine Intervention"! Take a look at how Ankita Chugh Weddings created an ambience of enchantment during this wedding executed at the Banaras Ghats venue of Aamby Valley City, Mumbai.

Speaking of the concept used, Ankita Chugh, Director, Ankita Chugh Weddings explains, “The idea was to evoke the spiritual senses and bring in the same divine intervention and sacredness of the holy aarti at Ganges.” As per the theme used by the agency-Banaras Weaves, there were drapes woven in Banarasi style. To lend greater authenticity, Ankita Chugh Weddings brought the magnificent 'Ganga Aarti' to life producing an absolutely sublime atmosphere. A group of priests were called from Banaras to carry out this ritual. The Aarti which was a prelude to the Varmala started at sunset when the sky was dusky. The Aarti took around 45 minutes and the enthralling experience was almost like gods from the heavens stepped down to bless the couple along with everyone who was present there!

The idea was to evoke the spiritual senses and bring in the same divine intervention and sacredness of the holy aarti at Ganges. ANKITA CHUGH Director, Ankita Chugh Weddings

MODI(FIED) WEDDINGS TO FOLLOW IN THE WAKE OF THE PM'S MASTERSTROKE? To dig deeper into how the decision to abolish high-value currency notes will affect the Indian wedding industry, ExCel reached out to industry stalwarts. In what can be termed as an absolute masterstroke at stamping out corruption and draining illicit cash from the Indian economy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8, 2016 announced the demonetization of all INR 1000 and 500 bank notes. The decision was announced during a late-evening television address to the nation during which Modi said, “In the past decades, the flow of corruption and black money has grown in our economy and it has weakened our effort to remove poverty.” He further added, “To break the grip of corruption and black money, we have decided that the five hundred rupee and thousandrupee currency notes presently in use will no longer be legal tender from midnight tonight (8th November 2016). This means that these notes will not be acceptable for transactions from midnight onwards. The five hundred and thousand rupee notes hoarded by anti-national and anti-social elements will become just worthless pieces of paper.”

We don't welcome this rule. Only God knows what will happen to the Indian wedding industry. We all know that black money exists. But as our leader, the Prime Minister should have done this in a more organized way and given people some time and leverage.

The announcement comes as a huge shock to many quarters of business in the country. However, it is believed that the most affected sectors will be mainly the construction industry, bureaucrats, small and medium level enterprises that run on liquid cash and day to day payments, and the Indian wedding industry, where the acceptance and flow of black money is estimated to be at an all-time high. To dig deeper into how the decision to abolish high-value currency notes will affect the Indian wedding industry, EVENTFAQS Media reached out to industry stalwarts in an exclusive conversation. Below are the excerpts of the conversation. Rajeev Jain, Director, Rashi Entertainment clearly stated, “We don't welcome this rule. Only God knows what will happen to the Indian wedding industry. At the end of the day, we all know that black money exists. But as our leader, he (PM) should have done this in a more organized way and given people some time and leverage.”

This will not affect the Indian wedding industry at all. People face problems every day; different types of problems. And therefore, they find solutions. Events, especially weddings, and private events are too important. They won't stop at nothing.

The wedding industry is great in terms of revenue generation. Such a move is only welcomed by us, the kind of regularization that this will impose, is sure to benefit the country in more ways than one.

This rule will not affect destination weddings in scenarios where the client is not a resident of India and most of our wedding clients live abroad and have a business that is globally set up!

On the other hand, Aditya Motwane, Director, Motwane Entertainment and Weddings exclaims, “This rule is fantastic for India as a country.”

It is to be noted that the new rule in place is an attempt by PM Modi to fulfill his election promise of curbing tax evasion and recovering illegally stashed income overseas. It gives the Bharatiya Janata Party a talking point ahead of elections in five states next year. Additionally, economists are not surprised at this move on the part of the government as they believe that the PM had been dropping hints at taking stringent actions all along. The process began from a massive push to universalize access to bank accounts to the use of Aadhaar in transactions and the push to a cashless economy. This was followed up with two offers for those with black money to come clean—the latest scheme closing on September 30.

“No doubt the wedding industry will be quite shaken just as politicians and the builder community. Weddings that are to take place immediately might be affected. However, this rule will not affect destination weddings in scenarios where the client is not a resident of India. Most of our destination wedding clients live abroad and have a business that is globally set up.” he added. Bhavnesh Sawhney, Director, Wedniksha also feels that there couldn't be a better and bolder move than the banning of 500 and 1000 rupee notes. He goes on to say, “The wedding industry is great in terms of revenue generation. Such a move is only welcomed by us, the kind of regularization that this will impose, is sure to benefit the country in more ways than one. While we do believe, there may be an inconvenience for perhaps a month owing to the circulation of the new currency. This initiative will help make the industry run a lot more smoothly in the long run.” Interestingly Samit Garg, Director E-Factor Entertainment said, “This will not affect the Indian wedding industry at all. People face problems every day; different types of problems. And therefore, they find solutions. Events, especially weddings, and private events are too important. They won't stop at nothing.”
