A BREAK FOR

EVERYONE!

There is always a good time to be had on a visit to Cornwall, especially if you are sharing it with loved ones. Whether it’s a special occasion, a romantic break or simply a family holiday, there is always a reason to stay here and always a reason to come back.

Retired visitors Cornwall is a fantastic destination for the retired visitor, especially if you’d like to escape to some peace and quiet. There are some beautiful coastal walks to discover in Cornwall along with quaint towns and villages with unique shops to browse for gifts to take home for loved ones.

Families If you are a family, small or large, there are so many places to visit to keep the kids and yourselves entertained on your stay. If it happens to rain, many of Cornwall’s top attractions are all weather friendly too, meaning you’ll always have a back up option if going to the beach isn’t on the agenda.

Dogs Couples There are many camping and caravanning sites situated a stone’s throw from the beach, and if you are a couple on a romantic break, nothing beats a walk along the sand hand in hand. Why not treat your other half to a delicious meal overlooking one of Cornwall’s fantastic beaches?

If you are bringing your dog on your trip, you will find that many holiday sites and beaches are dog friendly all year round. With so many coastal and inland walks available in Cornwall, they will be tired out in no time! Take a look at page 18 to see our favourite dog friendly sites. DISCOVER CORNWALL 5

WHAT TO DO

IF IT RAINS

Cornwall is spectacular whatever the weather, pictured is Towanroath Engine House at St Agnes

Don’t be disheartened if it the weather turns on your visit to Cornwall, as there are plenty of things you can do to keep yourself occupied while you wait for it to pass. Take a look at the following ideas which will ensure your mood isn’t dampened by the weather!

Take a rainy walk

Going outside may seem like the last thing you’d want to do in the rain, but being out in the Cornish countryside with the rain splashing down can be an invigorating experience. Get your wellies on, breath in the sea air and explore!

Wave watch

Crashing waves on the shore are always a sight to behold, especially in bad weather. Find yourself a safe vantage spot and take a look for yourself. Better yet, find a beach with a cosy cafe and watch from inside with a hot drink!

STAY COSY & WARM

It is always essential to pack emergency hot drinks when camping and caravanning, especially if there is a chance of rain - so snuggle into your sleeping bag, grab a large mug and warm up.

Play a board game

If you don’t fancy venturing into the great outdoors in bad weather then there is a chance you may be stuck inside for a while, so bring plenty of board games to keep you occupied and entertained.

Read a good book

There often isn’t time in busy day to day life to sit down and get stuck into a good book, but should you need to pass some time away while the rain falls, there is no better time to curl up, read and relax.

EXPLORE A NEW PLACE

There are plenty of attractions and landmarks in Cornwall that are good for wet weather visits. Take a look at page 15 for some ideas!

Visit & explore a local village

Wherever you are staying in Cornwall there will always be a village or town nearby to explore, and a rainy day is the perfect time to browse some shops and buy some gifts to take home to your loved ones (or maybe just for yourself!).

Take a surf lesson

The rain will get you wet anyway, so why not go to the extreme and go for a surf? There are plenty of surf schools around the beaches in Cornwall with instructors qualified to keep you safe and make sure you have fun!

Visit a local pub

If surfing isn’t up your street, stay warm and dry in a Cornish pub instead. Watch the rain as you dig into a delicious meal, and maybe sip on a Cornish pint!

Have fun & stay positive!

Remember to have fun and stay positive no matter the weather... you are in Cornwall after all!

FIVE OF OUR FAVOURITE

PLACES TO EXPLORE Cornwall is full to the brim with places to visit, from ancient buildings to beautiful walks. You will never be far away from somewhere to explore when visiting here, but if you are stuck for choice, these are a few of our favourites to give you a helping hand.

St Michaels Mount

www.stmichaelsmount.co.uk | 01736 710265 Sitting on its own small island in the middle of the sea, St Michael’s Mount is a sight to behold. You can only cross to the Mount at low tide along the rocky walk way, and at high tide your only option is by boat. Dating back to the 12th century, this magnificent building has been thrilling visitors for years, who love to explore its castle, gardens and surrounding village. The 2018 visiting season begins on Sunday 18th March.

THE Camel Trail

www.cornwall.gov.uk/cameltrail The perfect activity if you’ve travelled with bicycles, this 18 mile long trail follows a disused railway line from Bodmin to Padstow. Flat ground for most of the route means it’s great for those with little legs, and you can cycle or walk as much of the route as you like. It’s dog friendly too!

South West Coast Path www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk | 01752 896237 Cornwall is very lucky to boast 630 miles of continuous coastal walking, otherwise known as the South West Coast Path. It’s no surprise that this landmark attracts more than 9 million visitors a year, and the South West Coast Path Association make planning your route easy with their printed guides and informative website.

Tintagel Castle

www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/tintagel-castle | 01840 770328

Standing tall on the North Coast of Cornwall is Tintagel Castle, an English Heritage site surrounded in legend and mystery. Said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, there is plenty to explore around this ancient site, and you can learn more about the history of the castle by visiting their exhibition.

Cape Cornwall

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/cape-cornwall This small picturesque headland is so named as it is situated where two bodies of water meet, and it is in fact the only Cape in England. Part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and owned by the National Trust, see if you can spot any disused engine houses around the rugged coastline or wildlife and seabirds nestling in the cliffs. A CORNISH TRADITION The humble Cornish pasty. Possibly the most famous thing about Cornwall, and an absolute must have on any trip to the county. With thick buttery pastry traditionally encasing chunks of meat, potato and veg, it’s easy to see why the Cornish Pasty is so popular. But where did it all begin? The Cornish Pasty dates back to the 13th century, but it became a staple in Cornwall during the 17th and 18th century when many people worked in the Cornish mines. The hearty pasty was easy to carry and transport for lunch down in the mines, and it was also cheap to make meaning it was the perfect choice for many working class families. It’s thick

crust (arguably the best part of the pasty!) was thought to play the part of a handle, discarded after it’s lucky owner had finished with it to ensure no dirt or arsenic from the mines was consumed. The pasty continues to be just as, if not more popular than in those mining days, and is now available with a variety of fillings. From chicken and mushroom to a sweet apple and raspberry, the pasty has come a long way and you are sure to find a pasty shop round every corner in Cornwall. If you’ve come to Cornwall before you will know how good a proper Cornish pasty really is, but if you are yet to try one then prepare to be blown away!

The Cornish Way to an IdylLic HOLIDAY WITH YOUR DOG With dog ownership growing in the UK, many people now choose to holiday with their special four legged friends. Many camping and caravanning sites are now dog friendly, especially in Cornwall, and you can guarantee there will be plenty of great walks for you and your dog to enjoy. That being said, being a responsible owner often means you are left holding an unpleasant plastic waste bag due to a lack of bins on some routes. Upset by the amount of dog waste bags on the South West Coast Path, Newquay based inventor Mandy Davies (pictured top right) developed the Dicky Bag: an odour proof, portable, hands free bin.

Made in Cornwall, the Dicky Bag means dog owners can be responsible and clean up on every dog walk without the burden of ‘that bag’. It attaches to you, your lead or your dog and means that nasty knotted bag is out of sight and out of mind until you make it to a suitable disposal point. With the Dicky Bag, there are no excuses for not picking up your mess and dumping bags, and you will be helping to prevent toxic harm to the beautiful environment along the way. For more information visit www.dickybag.com Enter FREE-79 at the online checkout to get a free waist/shoulder strap with every Dicky Bag!

We all love spending time with our dogs on holiday, those amazing walks surrounded by idyllic countryside & fabulous sea views…but where are the bins! Have you ended up carrying a poop in a imsy pongy plastic bag for miles? I have, yet to prevent toxic harm to the environment it’s imperative that dog owners pick up everywhere! That’s why I invented the Dicky Bag, an attractive, lightweight, machine washable, portable bin! Inspired by Surfers wetsuits its neoprene rubber seals make it odourproof, holding in all the nasty smells. Lightweight, approx 100 grams & super tough so it lasts for years. Easily carried by attaching it to you, your lead or your dog with the belt loop, karabiner clip or Velcro wrap. It’s everything you need on your lead!
