Doggy Trails

for Waggy Tails

Joanne Tennant, owner of Dog Walking with Care, takes us on a woodland circular adventure walk following two waterways, boasting far reaching views to enjoy with your dog. Upper Tamar Lake Circular Walk A 1 ½ - 2hr strenuous walk on narrow woodland and riverside paths, with steep inclines and descents requiring stout waterproof footwear.

Doggy Trails for Waggy Tails

1. Start at the Pay & Display car park at the Steam Railway Station, Okehampton EX20 1EJ. 2. Exit car park through the main gate, take an immediate right into a small lane leading to the Tramlines Wood. 3. Keep the houses on your left and train station on your right. 4. Follow this wide pathway through a wooden gate and meadow. Take care of grazing livestock. 5. The path bears right through another gateway. Ahead you will see the viaduct, built in the 1870s. 6. Keep the East Okement River and Charlottes Bridge to your left and pass through another wooden gate. Look up at the elegant arches of Fatherford Viaduct. 7. Follow the river through the woodland, and admire numerous cascades and secret swimming spots. 8. You will come to an open space where the path splits, traverse the river using the small wooden bridge. 9. Keeping the river on your left, ascend the steep rock steps up past the waterfall. 10. Follow the path until you reach a switchback path to the right which rises steeply, at the top you will be rewarded by a stunning view. 11. Pass through a gate, being observant about grazing animals. 12. Follow the path with the meadow of bracken and gorse to your right down the hill to another waterway. 13. Climb the stile and cross the river using the stepping stones, follow the path keeping this river to your right initially ascending before descending to walk along the river bank. 14. Follow this path until you reach the ‘open place’ with the narrow wooden crossing bridge and retrace your steps back to the Railway Station.

Caring vets, happy pets Caring vets, happy pets

We are fortunate to have a fantastic team of Veterinary Nurses at Castle Vets. They genuinely have the welfare and happiness of the animals in their care as their top priority. However, being a Veterinary Nurse is definitely not all about spending your day cuddling animals – that’s just an extra perk of the job! Veterinary Nursing is a profession in its own right. Student nurses train for at least two years, and must pass written and practical exams and prove themselves to be competent in all areas in Practice before they qualify and become a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). Their job is very varied, and they are so much more than assistants to the Veterinary Surgeons. For example, they take blood samples, give medications, organise the operating list, look after the patients who are hospitalised, perform the critical role of monitoring the animals under general anaesthesia, run laboratory tests and give advice to owners about nutrition, behaviour and best care of their pets. The nurses are often more skilled at certain tasks than the Vets – such as wound management and dressings, giving angry cats tablets, taking awkward x-ray views and much more! Our Nurses are an absolutely vital part of our team – they are highly skilled and certainly never ‘just a nurse’! Please call us on 01566 772211 to talk to one of our friendly team

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR

Chamber of Commerce What is the Chamber of Commerce? We are a network of businesses and organisations within the town that wish to support one another and further commercial and community gains. We do this by offering a platform for all local businesses and organisations to work together, putting on events to increase footfall and create awareness of the town, creating networking opportunities and connecting people, sitting on a panel of decision makers for town matters, working with local traders wherever we can, seeking opportunities that will benefit the area, campaigning for Launceston’s best interests, informing potential developers and startups, working with community groups, offering mentorships and advice, and much much more. The Chamber is run by a team of volunteers that have first hand experience of living and working in the town and wish to increase Launceston’s acclaim. In short, we are run by businesses, for businesses. We also organise local events like the recent This Is Launceston, which was a huge success, and the forthcoming late night Christmas shopping with entertainment in the square on the 6th, 13th and 20th of December! We would love to have you on board for what we have in store over the coming months. Our focus is for all commerce, trade and industry, but the more members we have, the more Launceston will benefit.

A message from your Chamber of Commerce

We believe the businesses and organisations in this town make it something special. Without you, Launceston would not have the unique atmosphere that sets it aside from other towns; local and further afield. Not only are our businesses plentiful, they are vastly independent with a heart and edge that play a huge part in East Cornwall tourism as well as migration appeal.

News from LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL

As I am sure many of us feel, it is hard to believe that it is ‘that time of year’ once again. Though I have to say the recent cold snap has certainly been a reminder of winter. However even if we are all shivering at the cold, or the thought of too much turkey, I am sure that the sparkling Christmas Lights within the town, will provide us all with some warm glow. The latest from Launceston Town Council

Once again we have worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that the town looks its best and that we have a display that we can all be proud of. Our relationship with the Chamber continues to build year on year and it was a pleasure to be able to work alongside town businesses to ensure that we provided a line-up of Christmas events to draw people to our wonderful town. As an outsider from ‘upcountry’, I am always proud and delighted to see the incredible range of shops we have in our town and the Town Council look forward to more project working with businesses as our town continues to grow. The Remembrance events organised by the Royal British Legion again provided a wonderful opportunity to show the town’s respect and gratitude to those who made such sacrifice. I said the same last year, but am not ashamed to repeat it, that the huge crowds that came out to show their respect was testament to all that we know this town and its people has to offer. To witness such crowds, along with all the youth groups and organisations that paraded, is humbling and the Town Council is proud to be a part of such a significant day. It was just over a year ago that the Council installed a new 7 metre cinema

screen at the Town Hall, which gave another dimension to what we were already able to offer at the venue following the upgrading to our sound and light system. I am delighted to say that these upgrades have proved to be extremely popular and the Town Hall has never been busier. It was always an aim of the Council to make the town venues community hubs, offering a diverse range of entertainment, information and providing rooms for hire. The Town Hall and Ambulance Hall are now both regularly full to capacity, thanks in no small part to the incredible work put in by our Support Services Officer, Kate Stark. Kate has forged incredibly strong links with so many of our local groups and orginisations, as well as on a wider scale, that has seen the Town Hall play host to a host of famous faces. This is set to continue in the New Year when Dom Joly, Giles Brandreth, Simon Evans and Clive Anderson will all be appearing and BBC Radio 4 will be recording Any Questions? As the venues continue to get ever more busy we have reviewed our staffing requirements and we are delighted to welcome Mr Gary Herbert to our Stewards team. Working alongside Jon Stringer and Andrew Statton, the team are responsible for the stewardship of all of the Councils venues, as well as the car park and the public toilets. I think we would be very hard pushed to find three more loyal and dedicated colleagues. Continuing to look forward to next year, the town will once again be celebrating St Piran’s Day, which provides our local children with an annual community celebration to embrace their Cornish roots and heritage. Last year, our inaugural celebration of the day saw children from

Thank you for taking the time to read about what the Council has been doing and please remember that you can call, email or visit us in person if there is any information or updates you would like. Your town councillors can be contacted for help, guidance or information on any issues which concern you. They can be contacted via the Town Council office, telephone 01566 773693 or email admin@ launceston-tc.gov.uk. Your councillors are: Dave Gordon (Mayor) Leighton Penhale (Deputy Mayor), Sam Allen, Helen Bailey, Paula Bullen, John Conway, Nicola Gilbert, John Harris, Joan Heaton, Brian Hogan, Brian Keighley, Jane Nancarrow, Ian Nolan, Paul O’Brien, Rob Tremain and Margaret Young. The councillors hold surgeries which are on the second Saturday of the month as part of the Town market.

The Town Council has now been running the Library and Information Service for 8 months and I am delighted with the positive responses we have received since taking over the service. The Library team have worked tirelessly to ensure that the centre continues to provide a wide range of services to residents. We work closely with Cornwall Council to ensure that the service we are providing is reaching the required levels and in the Summer I was advised that during July the total number of issues (or items and services used from within the Library) was 6294. In the words of Cornwall Council this was ‘amazing’. Our library team are working extremely hard in engaging with the local community, and during their very busy Summer organised craft, Lego and activity events with 696 attendees to these activities, as well as signing up 109 new borrowers. These are brilliant examples of what the library can offer to the town and surrounding parishes and I am delighted that the team has integrated

local primary schools parading through town, stopping at the Town Square and Parade Ground for performances of Cornish dances and songs before a final series of recitals and lunch in the Town Hall. I am sure that the success and popularity of this event will continue to grow and make Launceston the hub for North Cornwall’s St Piran’s events.

another Mary

THE STORY OF

THIS CHRISTMAS

A true story of courage and cunning begins with Launceston criminal William Bryant lying in a prison cell in the 16th century. He had been sentenced to 7 years in the grimy Winchester prison for smuggling. His lover Mary Broad came to visit, and she had news for him; she was pregnant. She believed that if they exchanged clothes and stayed behind in his cell, he could escape. She was certain be treated well in prison as she was pregnant, so they followed her plan. William got caught a few days later, and Mary found herself sentenced to seven years transportation where she was shipped out to Australia on the famous first fleet of ships to Botany Bay. Mary gave birth on board and named her daughter Charlotte, after the boat. Miraculously, she was reunited with William again, and they got married. Another child Emmanuel came along, and William became Australia’s first non-aboriginal fisherman. Their gruelling life had already sparked the idea of an escape, so the couple found a chart, compass and a quadrant and recruited seven fellow convicts as a crew. They slipped away in William’s fishing boat and sailed 3000 miles to an Indonesian island, where they became the first to discover coal on the continent. This unlikely crew posed as shipwreck survivors and were given food, clothes and quarters by Dutch colonists on the island, however one of the convicts was overheard boasting about their escape, and everyone was arrested and shipped off once again. William and Emmanuel both died of disease on the way to England, followed by Charlotte who was too young for the exhausting journey, leaving Mary the only surviving member of her family. Mary was imprisoned in the infamous Newgate Prison, but her story had reached famous biographer James Boswell. He secured a pardon for her and she returned back home to Cornwall.

Your guide to a warm and welcoming winter

here is nothing quite like the soft glow of a Cornish pub welcoming you in to warm by the fire, especially in the winter months. In Launceston and the surrounding area, we are lucky enough to have a number of high quality, friendly, independent pubs, each with their own unique qualities. If its character and craft ales you are after, then a pint or two in The Bell Inn is where you want to head, and you’ll often find a quiz night and a local band playing too. Take a five minute amble across Launceston through the pretty streets and you’ll come across The Westgate Inn, a traditional, friendly pub serving home cooked food and great for catching the latest sport on TV. A little further afield but well worth the visit are Jamaica Inn on Bodmin Moor for the authentic North Cornwall winter vibe, and the dog friendly Lifton Hall Hotel in Lifton. We have had so many recommendations from the Launceston Community of some of their favourite pubs to visit, so take a look below and see where you may like to visit this season!

Welcoming atmosphere, lush people, fresh local produce and a pint (or two).“ Emma Bennett

PINT AND POST ST GILES / ARSCOTT ARMS CHAPMAN'S WELL

T

he Launceston and District Cats Protection branch has been running for more than 30 years, with the last 20 run by Mary Chudleigh at Hexworthy Barton. Cats arrive at the branch for various reasons; some can no longer be cared for by their owners, and stray cats are also taken in and rehomed if no owner is found. Some of these cats can require medical treatment, and the branch funds its own vet so they can ensure all rehomed cats are healthy. The Launceston branch currently rehomes about 180 cats and kittens per year!

Not only do they look after cats that need rehoming, but current pets too, where they offer assistance with the cost of neutering. Their voucher scheme is for people on low incomes or benefits, and offers neutering for £5 at one of the participating vets. They are currently supported by the Launceston branch of Pets at Home, who have kindly nominated them as their charity of the year. Take a look at the ideas below and see how you can help to keep the Launceston branch thriving too: ● B ecome a member - annual membership is £5 ● J oin the Kitty Club monthly draw - £12 annual payment ● Make a donation ● Volunteer ● Donate good quality items for resale ● Donate cat food ● Make a bequest in your will ● Rehome a cat or kitten ● Sponsorship ● Fundraising Visit www.cats.org.uk/launceston and their Facebook page to keep up to date with all news and view cats that need a forever home, or call Mary Chudleigh on 01566 773814.
