A message from Launceston (Cornwall) Community Interest Company We are very excited to announce that as from September 2019, the much loved Launceston Life Magazine and the new Launceston Business Life magazine will now publish under the newly launched Launceston (Cornwall) Community Interest Company. This means that all profits generated from the CIC through the magazines and website (as well as many other exciting projects in the pipeline), will be fed back into the community to help support Launceston in becoming a more prosperous town! It also means that every business advertising, donating or sponsoring the magazines, events, websites or any of the media outlets that Launceston (Cornwall) CIC creates, is also supporting their town, community projects, and working with us to achieve a more vibrant and viable Launceston. As a resident or business you won’t notice many changes in how you already engage with us, though you can be happy in the knowledge that your support means we are able to put our profits and time into our local community to improve Launceston’s services. We also publish a wide range of our town’s publications such as The Charles Causley Festival Programme and the Town Hall Wedding Folder, as well as more planned for 2020. If you have any questions about the Launceston CIC or any of the publications we produced please contact Ellie on 01566 788700 or hello@launcestonlife.com

Having a laugh!
After securing some incredible acts for Launceston over the past year, we speak with founder of Laughable Entertainment James Maunder. Why did you get into the entertainment business? It comes from a lifetime of enjoying comedy and performance. In my travels around the UK, I noticed that the South West has been poorly served in terms of top flight entertainment. People in Launceston have previously had to travel for at least an hour to reach a venue offering quality stand up comedy. We decided to form Laughable Entertainment to bring top quality shows to the doorstep and improve the cultural life of the town.
This past year you have managed to bring some brilliant acts to our town, what have been your highlights? It has been a thrilling roller-coaster of a ride so far, fortunately with the highs outnumbering the lows! Persistence and persuasion have landed us some amazing acts, and the people of Launceston and North Cornwall have responded with such positivity and enthusiasm. It was Laughable's mission to put Launceston on the national map for touring stand up shows, and we are thrilled that we have reached the point where agents are now approaching us with suggestions for shows.
Community is a really important word to us here at Launceston Life. What does community mean to you? Community for us is about people getting together and socialising, and it has been great for us to meet and get to know regular showgoers. Launceston is creeping onto the national map and that will increase further in 2020 as we have arranged for a major Radio 4 programme to be broadcast from the Town Hall.
What do you think makes Launceston such a good venue? We can't believe our luck with the level of acts we have secured so far, including Alan Carr. The first thing he said when he entered the room was how beautiful it was! The lovely people at Launceston Town Council have recognised the benefit to the area of what we are trying to achieve, and have been incredibly supportive. Clockwise - Jack Dee, Griff Rhys Jones, Hal Cruttenden and Andy Parsons
What is in the pipeline for the coming year? Our aim is to bring more top quality shows to Launceston and we have seven absolute belters lined up for the autumn, with the likes of Jack Dee, Griff Rhys Jones, Andy Parsons and Hal Cruttenden included. We are also excited to announce a series of "An Evening With" shows, where people who have had extraordinary careers talk about their lives and their work. • For more information and to be the first to know about upcoming shows and how to buy tickets, visit www.laughablecomedy.com and subscribe to the mailing list.

by Olivia Riby, Surfers against Sewage Following on from the article in the summer edition of Launceston Life, Plastic Free Launceston are pleased to report some exciting developments in each objective towards the plastic free town initiative.

The Town Council voted to support the campaign, with Cllr Sam Allen putting herself forward to be the official representative at events and the steering group meetings.

his objective refers to Steering Groups. We have now had our first meeting to discuss all T of the exciting plans we have to make Launceston a Plastic Free Community. Watch this space and visit the Plastic Free Launceston Page for weekly updates on how our fantastic town is doing!
We required 5 ‘Plastic Free Champion Businesses’ and we now have 11, with more to come. Each business will be receiving their Plastic Free Champion plaques and certificates very soon - so look out for them in their shops and windows! This objective requires Community Allies - and we have had a number of schools register their interest in becoming plastic free. If any other schools are interested, please get in touch with Plastic Free Launceston via our Facebook page for details. his objective is to host events, and by the time this goes to print we will have had our T Plastic Free Picnic at the Castle on August 25th. Do you have a skill or a talent for fixing things? We need skilled volunteers for our Make it and Mend Cafe, a chance to bring in broken electrical items or clothing that maybe needs some TLC for example. Instead of buying new, it is a chance to make do and mend with what we have and bring it back to life! Time to get away from the throwaway culture we live in. We are also planning a Plastic Free Market, which is an opportunity for local shops and suppliers to showcase all of their lovely plastic free goodies.
We also have individual tool kits if anyone wants to see what they can do as individuals to work towards a single use plastic free lifestyle. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/Launcestonplasticfree

An artist’s impression My introduction to art began in my birthplace of Leicester, after being showered by a falling tin of yellow powder paint, and trying to convince a teacher that my clay apparition with five legs was an elephant with a trunk. When I moved to Cornwall, I joined Launceston Art For Fun and took a textiles course. With support from my family and local creative explorers, I began to create images of Launceston and other towns with buildings in the wrong place, in impossible colours. Some people find it all a bit confusing, while others set me a new challenge. I benefited from great encouragement at Launceston Community Market, the Market in the Square, the Charles Causley Festival, exhibitions at Cowslip Workshops, and from the old Just Off The Square gift shop. This led to commissions from Lawrence House Museum and Launceston Town Council, and I exhibited at Launceston Tourist Information Centre. Products such as mats, coasters, mugs, cards, and my naïve art colouring book were made locally, with framing done in town. Last Christmas I donated designs for Launceston Refugee Support Group fundraising cards, and I have enjoyed supporting many other groups in different ways. I visit friends in Drawn to The Valley and Cornwall Open Studios to be inspired by their work, motivation and generous spirit. For several years I have enjoyed exhibiting at Upton Cross; Liskeard Cancer Research UK; and with the Association of British Naïve Artists. This year was my third time exhibiting at Delamore Arts on Dartmoor, where the stunning house and garden showcased a huge range of art in aid of local charities, this year being Children’s Hospice South West. I am always looking forward to the next artistic adventure and I love to see all the creative groups and outlets popping up, enriching Launceston’s life.

SOLD Let Stags of Launceston guide you through the property buying and selling minefield... Buying and selling a house is probably the biggest financial transaction you will make in your life, so it is important to trust that responsibility to experienced professionals who can offer help and advice at all stages throughout the process. Stags at Launceston are proud to provide a service to the community in and around Launceston that is personalised, confidential, cost effective, and above all, professional. They can assist in all aspects, including selling your property, searching for your dream home, letting a property and investigating planning possibilities, in addition to agricultural services such as rural grant schemes and estate management. Priding themselves on their customer service and ability to market properties to maximise their value, they steer both buyers and sellers through the increasingly complex nature of the house buying process.
As we approach yet another period of uncertainty in the country, Stags are here to offer the advice and expertise of a firm that has been established in the West Country since 1874, with 21 offices throughout the South West, a database of 14,000 registered applicants, the London office and a website generating some 7,000 visits each day – all of which means that, according to Rightmove, they are the Agent with sales on more properties (at £250,000 or more) than any other agent in the South West. • Why not visit their website www.stags.co.uk or contact the office on 01566 774999 and see how they can help you?

News from LAUNCESTON TOWN COUNCIL
The latest from Launceston Town Council
I would normally be enjoying writing this article with thoughts of what a wonderful summer we have had and all of the events that have taken place, but with the bunting blown down and our August market cancelled, it is fair to say that the past few weeks have been challenging! However, we have been able to enjoy some warm weather and when the sun did come out, it really did shine! The Launceston show was another great success and we enjoyed being able to showcase just some of what the Council does, particularly in regards to the events and services on offer at the Town Hall, Tourist Information Centre and Library.
of St Stephens by Launceston Rural Parish Council, and brings a wealth of local Council knowledge combined with an excellent local understanding. She will be an asset to the Town Council.
I really cannot speak highly enough of what our new colleagues are doing at the library. Since becoming part of the Town Council in May it has been a delight to see what the library has to offer, as well as the passion and professionalism of the team, led by Andi Snook. The recent Moon Landing event was incredible, with children designing their own space rockets, with the help of the DS Smith Community team, who supplied all the craft materials and creative inspiration for the day. The day began with a visit by children’s illustrator, Robert Crowther, best known for his pop-up creations, who helped the children bring their thoughts to life within their own designs. The Moon Landing was a central theme to the summer reading challenge ‘Space Chase’. The event was the first large combined event since the Town Council took over the running of the library, and families and local residents alike can look forward to many more.
We continue to work to provide a range of events for all ages within the town and the next few months has some incredibly exciting acts and events booked. At the time of writing, we have comedians Hal Cruttenden, Griff Rhys Jones, Jack Dee and Andy Parsons, An Evening with Aggers (Johnathan Agnew), former politicians Alan Johnson and Michael Portillo, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the much loved musical group The Countrymen. There really is something for everyone and you can find out about all of the great shows and events taking place as well as details for booking tickets, by visiting our website www.launceston-tc.gov.uk
We have been working on ways to make the town museum even better and in August we were seeking applications for the post of Curator. The Council agreed that this should be a paid post and we look forward to the opportunities that this will bring. The museum is now open on a Saturday, so if you have not had a chance to visit previously then I urge you to do so and see the fantastic collections, artefacts and exhibits.
I began by mentioning the weather, and it really has been testing for our Grounds Maintenance team. The sunshine mixed with the occasional downpour means that not only does the grass grow very quickly, but due to it being so wet at times, we simply cannot cut it. However the team continue to juggle between when they can and cannot cut, and always strive to ensure the town areas we are responsible for are maintained to the highest standard. If you

I am sure you will have seen the posters and information on our social media pages about the Annual Mayor’s Community Show which is taking place on Saturday 14 September. The show is in support of this year’s Mayor’s Charity. As well as raising funds for the charity (Freddy’s Fund), the show is intended to reintroduce historic Launceston events, such as the Cottage Garden Society Show. The show will provide an opportunity for local residents to participate in friendly competition, demonstrating their growing and artistic skills. The programmes and application forms are widely available, so if you can cook a quiche, bake a scone, grow fruit and vegetables, arrange flowers or are skilled in handicraft or photography, this is your chance to showcase your skills. There are also children’s categories, including building a Lego model! Thank you for taking the time to read about what the Council has been doing and please remember that you can call, email or visit us in person if there is any information or updates you would like. Your town councillors can be contacted for help, guidance or information on any issues which concern you. Caring vets, happy pets
The Small Animal Team at Castle Vets have always provided home visits to pets when needed, and this Autumn we will be launching our 'Castle Vets To You' service in response to increased demand for pets to receive veterinary care at home.
We will be able to see several pets during one visit, and although pets may need to come to the practice for some investigations, we can still take blood samples and perform other tests in their own home. We aim to serve a similar area to that served by our farm animal department north and west to Camelford, Bude, Okehampton and Holsworthy, south and east to Callington, Liskeard and Tavistock. Home visits provided by our 'Castle Vets To You' team will be at a significantly discounted rate. Please call us on 01566 772211 to talk to one of our friendly team about our 'Castle Vets To You' service.
You need a friendly, caring local vet you can trust. Caring vets, happy pets
Home visits are a solution in a number of challenging situations such as nervous pets who don't like coming to the surgery, or clients being unable to drive. Some owners may also appreciate having more time to speak to their vet in the comfort of their own home. 'Castle Vets To You' will be staffed by our experienced vets Claire or Tabi, accompanied by a qualified veterinary nurse.

By Mercy Brewer We all have memories of the Saturday market in Launceston Town Square, but it may surprise you to know that this integral part of Launceston living has been around from as early as 1206. The market was always an exciting event, and in 1647 Launceston even had its very own “market bell”. In 1840, the Market House in Broad Street, now home to café tables and a post box, was destroyed to make more room for selling corn, butter and Poultry. Before our war monument was built in the Town Square, now decorated with wreaths, bunting and Christmas lights from season to season, there was a circular stone building plastered with posters and advertisements, where cattle were often sold. By 1925 the war monument was built in the square to remember those we had lost locally to the Great War, but the market carried on down the street from Lloyds bank to the shoemakers shop (which you can now spot thanks to the gold boot hanging above The Byre!). In the present day, summertime stalls in the market sell a wide variety of local produce, from jams and chutneys to juices and cordials. But back in the early 1900s, strawberries, plums and cherries were what everyone looked forward to. “Strawberries were too expensive for a school boy, but cherries! On Sunday morning the street would be thick with cherry stones. I remember seeing my first ever banana on one of these stalls,” reminisces Mr Cecil Cole in Yesterday’s Town: Launceston. There are still chances to see new and exciting homemade things in the market stalls, as well as meeting organisations such as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. From medieval craftsmen to modern day traders, the Saturday market has always been central to people in Launceston.

If you have ever passed our office in Western Road, Launceston, you may have wondered who or what Step Into Learning is. We are a charity that provides Adult Education opportunities for Launceston and the surrounding districts, in a friendly, professional environment. The classroom can be a very intimidating place, however our tutors are very supportive and quickly inspire students to reach their goals. We have students from a wide range of backgrounds, and many are focusing on developing their IT skills or improving their maths. In fact, we provide a very wide range of courses across a variety of subjects areas. This autumn we have a new range of courses starting, which will enable individuals to gain skills for a new career or provide a level of personal development to allow you to pursue your personal interests. In addition, we provide a number of professional career courses in subjects such as management, teaching (adults) and specialised training to become a qualified counsellor.
It is our vision to create a counselling skills centre in Launceston for the north of Cornwall and surrounding area. If you are a people person and have a caring personality, becoming a counsellor may be the fulfilment of a personal ambition. It takes four years (part time) to be trained, but it is a very worthwhile profession. Above all, Step Into Learning is here to support the community of Launceston in any practical way we can. Instead of driving past, why not pull into our car park and pop in for a hot drink? We would be pleased to see you and welcome any opportunity to explain in more detail what we do. We are also on Facebook and Instagram, which ensures you are up to date with what is happening. Step Into Learning, Unit 1, Number One Business Centre, Western Road, Launceston. Looking for the ideal heating for your home? You’re getting warmer!
Excellent design and manufacture, controllability and ease of installation. The team at South West Heating points towards a few good reasons to change to ELKAtherm radiators
W
e all want our homes to feel warm and cosy throughout the year, yet we don’t often explore all the heating options that are available to us. South West Heating, a long established local firm, think that here in Cornwall there are many factors that go into making the right decision. Efficiency, performance and ease of use are extremely important when it comes to heating, but to many homeowners in the South West, so is interior design. Whether you don’t wish to disturb the traditional lines of a restored cottage or are looking for a heating system suited to a sleek, minimalist and modern home, ELKAtherm radiators are discreet and well proportioned - plus they are available in 197 different colours. The quality of design is more than just skin deep. The radiators heat the whole room evenly thanks to their clever, fluted design so there are no hotspots or chilly corners. ELKAtherm radiators have five times the effective surface area of other heaters the same size, warming rooms more quickly and helping warm air to circulate evenly by convection. People want heat when they need it, not when they guessed
they might need it, as is the case with night storage heaters. ELKAtherm radiators are supremely controllable. You can turn them on from your tablet or phone when you are on the way home or just flick a switch and within minutes you can feel the room beginning to warm through. South West Heating often recommends ELKAtherm electric radiators for properties that don’t have mains gas or as a replacement for night storage heaters but sometimes, even if traditional gas central heating is a practical option, customers prefer to avoid the mess and upheaval of pipework and plumbing and enjoy the fact that these radiators are generally installed within a day. As a Which? Trusted Trader, we keep in touch to ensure our customers are happy and with a 25-year guarantee and hand-built German craftsmanship we are confident that they will be pleased with their choice for many years to come. If you are looking to upgrade your home heating then give us a call and we will arrange for one of our engineers, not a salesman, to visit and make a recommendation for your property. We are sure that you will see it as a step in the right direction.
For more information on ELKAtherm electric radiators, call South West Heating Solutions on 01209 714600 ‘Quote CDL’ or visit www.southwestheatingsolutions.co.uk

Meet your new Mayor! Recently re-elected as Launceston’s new Mayor, we caught up with Cllr Dave Gordon.
Meet Launceston’s New Mayor - Cllr Dave Gordon
We understand this isn’t the first time you have undertaken this role. What made you want to stand as Mayor again? I was asked by our previous Mayor Margaret Young if I would consider being her deputy, which I was very happy to do. Near the end of her second year, I was approached by Council members to consider the role again, and I was happy to accept.
What do you think the town's priorities are over the next 5 years? Our priorities for the immediate future are to secure a new site for our Library service, and to ensure all future development comes with real infrastructural improvements. Tell us something about yourself that we may not know... I was born, educated and learnt a trade right here in Launceston. Despite working for 30 years as a full time fireman in Plymouth, I have always lived here. I have been married to Carole for 43 years this year and we have had 3 lovely children. We sadly lost our dear son Darren 10 years ago, but we are so lucky to have our 2 daughters Lisa and Emily, and grandson Aaron all living locally. I am so proud and honoured to be Launceston's Mayor, and very proud of my family who support me in that role.
What does Launceston mean to you? Launceston is my birth place and home town. My mother was a true Launceston girl, who was born above her father's shop in Westgate Street and lived and died within a half mile radius of the town Centre all her life. As children we were brought up to care and respect our town, and Launceston is and always will be very important to me. How has Launceston changed in the last ten years? The changes we have seen has mainly been through housing growth, rather than employment growth. Unfortunately this growth has not seen real infrastructure come with it. With further housing developments planned, it is the Town Councils role to ensure that any future growth is directly linked to real improvements in our infrastructure. Along with this growth we also need good quality local jobs for our residents. The 21st century traffic that travels through and around our medieval style town also continues to be a concern, which the Town Council will to raise with our unitary Council.
And finally what makes you proud of Launceston? I have always been proud of our town, and felt that Launceston has a great community spirit, which is being shown right now by the people of our community supporting my charity for this year "Freddy's Fund". We have so much happening here, and we must continue to support our local events so that they can grow and continue. A Town Council working group have been working hard to produce an amazing weekend of Christmas activities and events for all ages this year, and it is our aim to produce a festive weekend that everyone in Launceston can be proud of.
