STAY SAFE The Cornish coast is beautiful, but it can be deceivingly dangerous. Take a look at the advice below to ensure your safety in and around the water.
Swim between the red & yellow flags These flags mark the ‘safe swimming’ area in lifeguard season and are constantly monitored.
Avoid the sea & coast path in strong winds The strength of the wind can be deceiving, and you should never swim in high winds or bad conditions, as it can be easy to get swept out to sea or caught in a rip tide. There are also some sections of the South West Coast Path that are narrow and difficult to navigate in bad weather. If the wind is howling, opt for an indoor activity or safer inland walk instead.
Don’t swim alone Ensure you have someone else with you when you are swimming. Two people are better than one if there was an emergency.
Choose a lifeguarded beach Many beaches in Cornwall are lifeguarded throughout the warmer months. It’s always best to ensure your safety by choosing a beach where, if you are swimming, a professional will be on hand to help should anything happen. Visit the RNLI website to find your nearest lifeguarded beach and check their operational hours. Read & follow safety signs Safety and warning signs are usually found at the entrance to the beach, and will tell you what you need to know in order to ensure the safety of yourself and others around you.
Shout for help if in trouble If you find yourself in trouble, put your hand in the air and shout for help. The lifeguards will then be able to see you and hear you more clearly. Don’t try & help someone in difficulty Never attempt to rescue someone in trouble at sea - tell a lifeguard immediately or if there isn’t one nearby, dial 999 and ask for the coastguard. Check tide times It’s easy to lose track of time at the beach, but it can be extremely dangerous and sometimes fatal to get cut off by the tide. THE SOUTH COAST The South Coast of Cornwall is a medley of lovely beaches, estuaries and river valleys encased in gorgeous woodland, as well as little towns and villages filled with independent shops to browse. Exploring the South Coast will lead you to places such as Fowey, a stunning coastal town; Charlestown, famous for the filming of the popular Poldark series; and the Roseland Peninsula, a dedicated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The First and Last at Land's End - depending on whether you were entering or leaving England, this is the first or the last house you will see!
OUR TOP LANDMARKS ON THE SOUTH COAST Lizard Point - As the most southerly point in Britain, there are plenty of walks around the Point which showcase the best of the South Coast. St Anthony Head - Dating back to the late 19th century, this military fort has gradually been restored by the National Trust. Guided tours are available. Land's End - The most westerly point in Britian boasts some fantastic views of the South Coast along with plenty to do, eat, drink and enjoy along the way. Top Towns to visit
Padstow Cycle the Camel Trail - Following a disused railway line from Bodmin to Bude Padstow, the Camel Trail is 18 miles long and is flat for most of the way Perranporth meaning it’s great for those with little legs! Newquay Bedruthan Steps - Steep steps are the only access to Bedruthan Steps Beach, Polzeath but the views and landscape are spectacular. Legend has it that the large rocks Port Isaac across the beach were stepping stones for the Bedruthan Giant! Tintagel Copper Trail at Bodmin Moor - Many old copper mines that have fallen into disrepair can be found on this route. Not for the faint hearted, the route is 60 miles long so if you’d like to complete it be sure to find some accomodation along the way! Learn to surf - Cornwall’s North Coast is renowned for surfing, with many championships taking place throughout the year. You’ll find a few of our favourite Surf Schools on page 19. Wild West Coast
Here in the South West, we’re lucky enough to have 630 miles of continuous coastal walking, otherwise known as the South West Coast Path. This famous trail appears in the Lonely Planet as one of the best walks in the world and in their Book of Great Adventures, not to mention being voted Britain’s Best Walk twice running by the readers of Walk magazine. It’s no surprise then that the South West Coast Path attracts more than 9 million visitors a year, but with so much on offer, where do you start? Thanks to the South West Coast Path Association, the charity that protects and promotes this world-class trail, their printed guides, and informative website means planning your trip along the coast path is easy. Why not try the routes below and explore the coast path for yourself!
Porthleven to Poldhu
SOUTH COAST | West Cornwall Perfect for: A drink stop Length: 4.9 miles With magnificent views of West Cornwall, this is a picturesque walk for the more experienced walker. Beginning at Loe Bar car park in Porthleven, make your way towards Loe Bar beach and walk across the beach until the coast path rejoins. Follow the route through to Gunwalloe, or ‘Church Cove’ - where you will find the Church of Saint Winwaloe situated on the beach. A little further and you will come to Poldhu cove, which is home of Poldhu Beach Cafe and perfect for a hot drink stop!
Sir John Betjeman Walk
St Anthony Head & Place
Perfect for: Spotting wildlife Length: 3.7 miles
SOUTH COAST | EAST Cornwall Perfect for: An easy-access route Length: 4.5 miles
Named after great Poet Laureate John Betjeman, who wrote many poems of his days as a boy in Cornwall, this walk takes you through the dunes that line the bank of the River Camel. This route passes by Brea Hill, where you can find remains of a Roman encampment, and a slight detour will take you to St Enodoc Church where Sir John Betjeman is buried. St Enodoc Church is open to visitors from 7.30am until dusk.
This circular walk has two starting points which allow for a slightly shorter walk starting at the car park at St Anthony Head or slightly longer walk starting from the ferry landing stage at Place. With great views along the way as well as lots of wildlife and a lighthouse to spot, this is a great walk for children and has a wheelchair friendly section between St Anthony Head, the bird hide and the lighthouse. Ensure you check ferry times if starting from the Place ferry landing stage.

Gyllyngvase (or Gylly for short!) is Falmouth’s largest and arguably most popular beach, and has everything you need for a great day by the sea. Gylly Beach Cafe, situated right on the beach, serves up food, drink and entertainment all year round, and they even have a 'Bakery on the Beach' too! Gylly also boasts its very own paddleboard centre, WESUP, so you can try your hand at watersports on your visit.
The mile long stretch of snowy sand at Praa Sands makes it a popular choice all year round, whether you are going for a wintry walk with the dog or building sand castles with the kids in the summer. A popular spot for surfing, Praa Sands also boasts a beach cafe selling food and drink, and a range of swim and beach gear in the adjoining shop.

There are some that everyone flocks to in summer with a vibrant buzz and busy waters, and there are those that are much quieter and harder to reach. Here we celebrate Cornwall’s secret beaches, those hidden gems that are sometimes forgotten but are just as memorable to visit.*
Tregardock Beach
NORTH COAST | CENTRAL CORNWALL SAT NAV: PL33 9ED | OS GRID REF: SX 0415 8404 BANNED EASTER DAY TO 1ST OCTOBER Situated between Tintagel and Port Isaac, Tregardock is a tricky beach to reach but worth the climb. At low tide there are plenty of rock pools and small coves to explore, with one boasting a waterfall towards the north end of the beach. At high tide the beach is cut off by the sea, so check your tide times before visiting.

Porth Joke, also known as Polly Joke, is a peaceful beach tucked away from the crowds. Dotted with rock pools and caves, Porth Joke also boasts some beautiful wild flowers in spring and early summer. The nearest car park is a 15 minute walk away, but it’s worth the trip any time of the year.

St Michael's Mount
St Michaels Mount Sitting on its own small island in the middle of the sea, St Michael’s Mount is a sight to behold. You can only cross to the Mount at low tide along the rocky walk way, and at high tide your only option is by boat. Dating back to the 12th century, this magnificent building has been thrilling visitors for years, who love to explore its castle, gardens and surrounding village. Engine Houses These large rectangular buildings boasting tall chimneys can be found dotted around Cornwall’s coast. These engine houses represent the ancient history of Cornish mining heritage in the 21st century, and were used, unsurprisingly, to encase the framework of the engine inside. Most engine houses have now fallen into disrepair, but there are still a few restored buildings with working engines that you can visit around Cornwall.
Cornish Choughs With their vibrant red bills and legs, and their jet black feathers, the Cornish choughs are arguably the more beautiful member of the crow family. Choughs became extinct in Cornwall in 1978, but in 2001 three wild choughs arrived from Ireland and set up camp on The Lizard. Since then, they have regained in their numbers and are now a protected species, and you can find them nesting in cliffs and sea caves. Visit www.cornishchoughs.org for more information.
