Captured The thing I love about Porthleven is it doesn’t matter whether it’s stormy or bright sunshine, it never fails to show off its natural beauty.
I arrived in Porthleven early morning to capture the sunrise. As I approached, I could see the mist in the valley so knew things were looking promising. As I walked through the small town and along the harbour wall there was no one else around. It felt amazing, the feeling of having Porthleven to myself even if it was only for half an hour or so. I didn’t want or feel the need to do anything fancy with this capture. All I wanted to do is capture Porthleven for what it is... a stunning, picturesque harbour. My Porthleven We asked local business owners what Porthleven means to them, and why they chose our small fishing town to set up shop.
We delighted in visiting Porthleven for years before the opportunity to run the Twisted Currant arose.
We love working each day in a beautiful harbour town and meeting such a variety of personalities, both local and holiday makers. To be able to serve quality teas, coffees and cakes in a traditional tearoom is a dream come true. To be able to do so in Porthleven is the icing on the cake.
Porthleven’s reputation grows each year and it is nice to think we play a small part in promoting the image of the village around the country and abroad. There is still a real community spirit in the village and we are lucky to be a part of it. Susan and Michael Plant Owners of the Twisted Currant Tea Room

I’ve seen so many exciting things happening in the last ten or so years in Porthleven – it’s a place now where people really want to be, with so much going on and so many opportunities. On top of the fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding and of course surfing, the food scene is really booming so I’m really excited to be opening The Mussel Shoal. It will be a new concept in eating as part of it will be floating in the harbour. Think fun dining, not fine dining.
It just made sense with the great foodie scene we have here to give this a go, and why not? If you’re lucky enough to have the opportunity, you’ve got to give it a go, haven’t you? Kelvin Batt Director of the Masked Ball
Porthleven is a magical place. I feel very lucky to have lived and worked here for many years and to have my shop on the quayside. Porthleven is such a friendly place with a real community spirit. It is full of independent shops and restaurants that draw people here, and it is evolving all the time. From sitting outside the pub on a summer evening watching the children jumping off the quay to the wild winter storm watching off the beach, there is nowhere I would rather be. Belinda Higgs Owner of Lindy Lou
I grew up in Cornwall, down the road in Marazion. I trained as a chef and left as soon as I had finished college. I wanted to learn how to cook, and back then there wasn’t much of a food scene down here. I have been lucky enough to travel to some amazing places but Cornwall never left me and I always wanted to come home. After nearly 20 years, I did!
When we opened The Square, I couldn’t believe my luck. I get to come to work here in Porthleven looking out over the harbour and smelling the sea. It’s in my soul.
Stew Eddy Owner of The Square Restaurant
As a Porthleven boy, I’ve spent my life in the village. I’ve learnt to surf here and lifeguarded the beaches.
It is a very special place to me. I’ve always been extremely passionate and committed to being a part of improving the community in the village for all generations and tourists.
It was a dream and lifelong ambition to run my own barbering business. A business that made people look good; feel good and happy. One where I got to meet new people both local and from afar. With lots of hard work and passion for cutting hair, I eventually found the perfect shop.
I love helping others so what a place to do this, in my own shop in Porthleven. Bruno Martin Owner of Porthleven Barber Shop

Jude knows his food
Jude Kereama is Head Chef at Kota Restaurant with Rooms, and Kota Kai Bar and Kitchen in Porthleven, which he runs with his wife Jane. When he’s not in the restaurant he can be found cooking at local food festivals, including Porthleven’s in April, or running around the local area. Well known for his exciting dishes, Jude combines the best from land and sea, in a fused-Asian style of cooking that draws on his half-Maori, half-Chinese Malay heritage. Jude has been awarded a Bib Gourmand at Kota four years in a row, making it the only restaurant in these parts to hold the accolade. He was also voted Best Chef at the highly-regarded Trencherman’s Guide Awards last year and Kota was named best restaurant in the Cornwall Life Awards. You may also have seen him representing the South West on the BBC’s Great British Menu. We would definitely recommend sampling Jude’s 3 AA Rosette cooking while you’re in Porthleven – and you can also try it at home with this easy-to-make dish using the freshest of ingredients for an authentic Thai encounter.

Chilli Paste 10g diced, soaked and seeded red birds’ eye chilli 25g shallots, 3 garlic cloves 50g fresh red chilli 4 tablespoons vegetable oil Spice Paste 10g shrimp paste 100g shallots 50g garlic 3 stalks lemongrass 3 diced, soaked and seeded red chillis 20 white peppercorns 5 tablespoons coriander powder 5 tablespoons oil Stock 1.5 litres prawn stock 75g palm sugar 200ml coconut milk Garnish Fish of choice, mussels, prawns, cooked yellow noodles, tofu, mange tout, spring onions, bean sprouts, mint leaves, vietnamese coriander, coriander, lime wedges Add as much garnish as you like. It all depends how hungry you are and, of course, how much punch you would like from the herbs. Method
1. Make the spice paste: blend all ingredients into a paste. If the mix is not blending, add some water until it is smooth. 2. Make the chilli paste: blend all the ingredients. 3. Make the curry sauce: stir fry spice paste to release the aromas, add all stock ingredients and bring to the boil. Season. Let the stock simmer and season with the chilli paste to your taste. Add prawns, mussels, fish and mange tout until just cooked. Place yellow noodles and tofu at the bottom of the serving bowls, and spoon the fish and curry on top. 4. Garnish with bean sprouts, coriander, spring onions, Vietnamese coriander, mint and lime.

For one weekend in April, Porthleven is transformed into a very foodie festival.
From top chefs to plenty of family entertainment, Porthleven Food Festival delivers a great experience for all. And the even better news is that most of the daytime entertainment is free.
Top: Mad Dog Mcrea start the festival off with a bang on the Friday.
Below: Festival patron Antony Worrall Thompson.
P
orthleven is always a foodie place to be but in April that ramps right up. This year’s festival theme is Love Food and the organisers say that it’s in recognition of the amazing restaurants, produce and chefs in town both during the festival and throughout the rest of the year. For 2019 the Chef ’s Theatre will welcome some huge foodie names including Tom Brown from Cornerstone, London; Gareth Ward of Ynyshir in Wales; and Josh Eggleton from the Pony and Trap near Bristol. They will join stars of the local scene like Guy Owen of the Idle Rocks in St Mawes, Ben Tunnicliffe from Newlyn’s Tolcarne Inn and more. And of course the whole event will kick off with the everpopular cook-off between festival patron Antony Worrall Thompson and Porthleven’s own Jude Kereama of Kota and Kota Kai. Wander through the Moors Market tent brimming with local produce and sample the wares of many of the suppliers before you buy. Chat to the food producers at over 100 food stalls that find their homes in Porthleven for all three days. Bring the family to the Moors field where culture vultures will love the Literary and Acoustic tent, and the kids will adore the free craft and circus workshops and parades. The only ticket charges on site are for the evening Shipyard Sessions, which feature some fantastic musicians. Friday night’s opening party sees the mighty Mad Dog Mcrea come to town, supported by The Roustabouts in what’s sure to get the party started with a bang. Saturday brings a tribute to Motown by some of Cornwall’s top soul musicians and a DJ Set from Pete Isaac of Jelly Jazz that’s sure to keep the dance floor moving. Sunday is an all-Porthleven line-up with fantastic local artists including Half Kut, Rosie Crow and Go Go Skank. Avoid the crowds by staying on the festival campsite where you can bring your own tent or camper van, or book a pre-erected bell tent or shire hut complete with beds, mattresses, lockable doors, electric, mirrors and more.

An unmissable trip for all the family

Perfect for all the family, we begin and end in Porthleven with some exciting stops along the way. Start
Begin your day at Nauti But Ice in Porthleven. This stylish cafe serves breakfast, brunch, lunch, cream teas, cakes, hot and cold drinks. There are plenty of delicious ice creams to choose from too which are served all year round. Owners Dave and Lucy pride themselves on using local suppliers to ensure that all their visitors get a true taste of Cornwall, including Origin Coffee and Dales Butchers of Helston.
We suggest enjoying a hearty breakfast and barista made coffee to fuel your day. Scrummy eggs Benedict or fresh hot waffles are always a real treat, and the spectacular view of Porthleven Harbour is the cherry on top! When breakfast is finished, it is time to set off into Penrose woods. From Nauti, walk around the Porthleven clock tower and follow the stunning coastline until you shortly arrive at First Downs car park. Walk up the steps and join the next stretch of coast path.
When the path branches down onto Loe Bar beach, be sure to stay on the path and travel down into the woods. After a picturesque walk through the woodland, you will find The Stables hidden in its centre (55 mins).

The Stables is nestled in the heart of Penrose woods. It is the perfect spot for a break, with indoor and outdoor seating. Top up for your journey from their selection of homemade cakes, ice creams, and hot and cold drinks.
Here you can enjoy the country landscape, explore the walled garden next door and watch the cows graze in the fields as you prepare for the next leg of your journey. Top: Breakfast at Nauti but Ice Middle: The Stables
Bottom: The Lakeside Cafe
Continue along the path then turn right at the next junction following signs for Helston. There is now a flat path through to Lakeside Cafe and Helston Boating Lake. These will both be on your left as you come to the end of the Penrose woodland and head into Helston (35 mins).

Making Porthleven
Shine
Porthleven prides itself on being a clean, tidy and well-kept place - but many may not know about the hard work that goes on behind the scenes here to make it this way. One team of people that play a big part in keeping our town the best it can be is the Porthleven Environment Group.
Above: Volunteers are paramount in the work of Porthleven Environment Group.
Below: Porthleven Environment Group worked their magic to turn the run down shelter into a pleasant place to wait for the bus.
H
eaded up by husband and wife duo Trevor and Kaz Toms (pictured above), what started out as a council-funded project is now a stand-alone not-for-profit group. It works hard to not only keep the town clean and tidy, but also to breathe new life into areas of Porthleven that have seen better days. One of these projects was renovating the Porthleven bus shelter, that up until quite recently was in a state of disrepair. Members along with help from volunteers repainted, cleaned and donated items to the shelter, turning it into a pleasant place to wait for the bus. And it is this sort of help from local and visiting volunteers that has kept the group moving forward. “Help comes in many forms” says Kaz, head of fundraising. “People donate in many ways, whether that’s their time, money or gifting items. However people choose to help us, it all means we can keep going with our projects”. The group have also had an overwhelming response to their dog poo bag initiative. When Trevor and Kaz first joined the team - they noticed a real problem with dog poo in Porthleven. Being regular dog walkers themselves, they decided something had to be done, and there are now 32 dog poo bag dispensers around the town. The bags are free to take if you run out, and are kept topped up by the kindness of local people, businesses and visitors. The dog poo problem in Porthleven has now dramatically decreased. One of their most recent projects has been to clear and rejuvenate an overgrown space which housed a memorial to the Dunblane victims. This has now been recovered and the patch renewed, with bulbs being planted and the space being enjoyed by many. Made for you at Harbour View
Pubs
P
orthleven’s Harbour View Cafe enjoyed its first full year in operation in 2018 under the reigns of new owner Penny, and has firmly found its feet in our town, loved by locals and visitors alike.
Situated on ‘Breageside’, between the 17th century Ship Inn and the historic Lime Kiln, this dog-friendly licensed cafe restaurant boasts a varied menu including spectacular breakfasts that have become a talking point in the town! You can enjoy the cosy setting of the cafe and dine inside, and if the sun is shining there is an outdoor terrace to enjoy. If you can’t stop for long then you can take away anything on their menu – the perfect idea for a picnic if you’re walking the cliffs for a day. It is this sense of ease that owner Penny really likes to bring to the cafe. The menu is simple, tasty and caters for all dietary requirements, but it doesn’t stop there. “We believe people should have the food they want and love” says Penny, “which is why we always welcome feedback, ideas and suggestions for the menu and listen to ways we can improve”. “We would like to say a big thank you to everybody who supported us in our first year, and we can’t wait to see what this year will bring.” Harbour View also welcomes parties and large groups through its doors for any occasion or event. Penny and the team can provide a buffet or set menu of your choosing and make it truly special in the picture perfect setting of Porthleven.

Porthleven
Porthleven is something of an iconic location when it comes to watching storms roll in from the Atlantic, and autumnal storms are part of the reason why I was on holiday here during November. Having spent an afternoon photographing in the cold rain and strong winds from more elevated spots, I headed down to the harbour, where the sea was churning and the sky looked menacing.
I used an extended exposure time to help capture a sense of the movement and chaos of the sea, and used black and white to convey the mood.
Porthleven looks lovely with a calm sea and blue sky – but I love it even more when a storm is brewing! I’ve been lucky enough to stay here several times over the last few years and, whatever the weather, I’m always drawn back. Craig Harvey Light on the Landscape @lightonthelandscape

Lose yourself in a plant paradise for the afternoon Just a five minute drive from Porthleven sits Trevena Cross. At first glance it may appear just another garden centre, but as you drive into the car park past the huge specimen palm and olive trees, you realise that couldn’t be further from the truth.
TREVENA CROSS Breage, Helston, TR13 9PY www.trevenacross.co.uk 01736 763880 (Café: 01736 763184)
T
revena Cross doesn’t just sell plants; it grows them – more than 90% of what it sells in fact – with passion and expertise that simply can’t be rivalled. Their huge 32 acre, on site growing area gives them the scope to grow and nurture a continuous supply and huge variety of trees, shrubs, perennials, hedging plants and bedding plants, including rare and unusual specialities that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. This rather exceptional operation is independent and family owned, and run by the Jeffery family. It has remained in the same hands since the business’s inception back in 1976, and has a unique charm and appeal, which makes it extremely popular with its loyal local customer base. An emphasis on plants from warmer climes and plants suitable for coastal locations makes a wander around the centre a particularly interesting experience for out-of-county visitors too, particularly during the spring and summer. And with a nationwide delivery service, it’s possible for visitors to have a piece of Trevena Cross in their own garden too! The locally renowned on site Garden Kitchen Cafe is a must during a visit – cosy up by the wood burning stove in the winter or relax on the terrace in the summer, overlooking the wonderful undercover plant area. Choose your pleasure from an extensive menu of homecooked breakfasts and meals, made with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Or treat yourself to an afternoon cream tea with a view! Green fingers or not, the extensive gift department in the shop, housing a wide array of irresistible items for everyone, from baby to granny, is also worth a visit alone! Open every day of the week.

SWIM & SURF Cornwall boasts many sandy beaches with glorious tides, with some suited to swimming or surfing. Our beach is safe for swimming between the lifeguard flags during lifeguard season, which is 7th July - 2nd September from 10am - 6pm. As Porthleven is quite rocky and can have a strong current, surfing should be avoided here unless you are highly experienced. It’s just as fun to watch the pros out at sea! WALK
If you are staying here then you are lucky enough to have the South West Coast Path right on your doorstep, and Porthleven is the perfect place for a trek following the coastline. With Porthleven as your starting point, a nice easy route leads you to Poldhu Cove towards the Lizard. A more challenging route in the opposite direction takes you to Rinsey Cove, where you can spot some magnificent engine houses on the way. Penrose Walks, owned by the National Trust, is also a very popular route. Taking you round the front grounds of the grand Penrose Estate, you will find an old bath house and cows grazing in the fields. From Penrose estate, you can carry on round Loe Pool back along the cliff to Porthleven or walk to Porthleven’s neighbouring town of Helston. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk/penrose
CYCLE Although the coast path isn’t the best terrain for cycling, there are plenty of routes you can find around Porthleven which are great for two wheels. Penrose estate is very popular with cyclists and is mostly flat making it good for those with little legs! For a more challenging route, take the route from Porthleven right around Loe Pool, Cornwall’s largest natural freshwater lake.

Captured I’m lucky to call Porthleven my home, and my camera comes everywhere with me as the weather on the coast is so changeable. Having it to hand ensures that you can capture anything from glorious sunny days to storm filled seas and winter moments like this! We don’t get a lot of snow in Porthleven, so being treated to a sight like this was a wonderful experience which I feel privileged to have captured and go on to share.
I remember this day well as I asked a wonderful gentleman to stop still so I could capture this scene before any footprints were made. He stood patiently whilst this moment was frozen in time. The red buoy on the pier really stood out against the snow to complete the shot. Dog Friendly Porthleven
When taking a trip away, it is never quite the same if you have to leave your furry friend behind. Luckily, Porthleven is a very dog-friendly town and the perfect place to come if you are travelling with dogs. Here are five reasons why we are top dog for your hounds!
Photo - Carla Regler
EXPLORING THE BEACH Boasting our own beach which stretches out towards the Lizard, your dogs can enjoy a good run around and perhaps a dip in the sea too. There is nothing better than an early morning walk as you watch the sunrise, so get that alarm set at least one morning while you’re here! There is a seasonal dog ban in place each year from 1st May to 30th September, but dogs are allowed further up from the main beach at the ‘Blue Buoy’ steps, just a short walk from the main entrance. WALKS IN THE WOODS AND SURROUNDING AREA As well as the famous South West Coast Path running through our town, there are many other places to explore with your canine friends. Penrose Estate, owned by the National Trust, is a particularly popular spot with dog walkers, with many different routes you can take through the woodland. FREE DOG POO BAG DISPENSERS Thanks to the hard work and generosity of the Porthleven Environment Group, you will find 32 dog poo bag dispensers dotted around the town. They are available free of charge to all dog walkers should you get caught short with your own. DOG-FRIENDLY BUSINESSES You will find that many businesses in Porthleven allow dogs in, including cafes and restaurants, which is extremely handy after a long walk when you are in need of a good lunch or a hot drink. Some even provide your dogs with treats so they won’t feel left out! Always be sure to check if your furry friend is allowed in with you before you enter a shop or eatery. DOG-FRIENDLY HOLIDAY LETS In Porthleven there are many stunning holiday apartments, houses and cottages that cater for both you and your dog. The owners of the lets know that Porthleven is a special place to bring the whole family, so you won’t find it difficult to find somewhere that will be a real home from home for both of you!

Dog heaven in Porthleven
Y
A Wednesday in the life of Bella the Jack Russell, a Porthleven pooch
ippee! It’s Wednesday and my owner has a day off today, so has promised me a day out to all of my favorite places. I sit patiently by the door whilst my owner ensures she has plenty of poo bags in her pockets, then I pick up one of my favorite tennis balls and off we go.
We are very lucky to live here in Porthleven not far from the harbour, and luckily the sun is shining. There are lots of lovely walks and places to go here, but our usual first walking spot is the peaceful Church Yard. To be respectful here I am always kept on the lead, and we often sit on one of the benches to see the lovely views of the town and across the fields at Methleigh Farm. Another of my favorite walks is down along the harbour front. I run down the steps straight onto the beach if the tide is out, and I love to dig for stones and have a little paddle! After all of that exercise, it’s time for lunch (and hopefully a dog biscuit or two). Porthleven is so dog friendly, and most of the cafes, restaurants and pubs here let us in – even if we are wet and sandy!
After our refreshments, we walk down to the Porthleven Amenity Area by the Cricket Club, where there is a large grass area for me to run around and play ball in, and plenty of dog poo bins too. From here we may walk to the beach, and although I’m not allowed on part of it during the main season, there is a section down by Blue Buoy steps which is dog-friendly all year round. We finish off our day out with a walk up Loe Bar road and onto to the newly finished Coast Path that is looked after by the National Trust, and then head home for a well deserved snooze!
50
Our community are very keen to keep Porthleven a welcoming place for our lovely visitors and locals, so please always use the many dog poo bins that are dotted around and keep your eye out for free dog poo bag dispensers courtesy of Porthleven Environment Group.
