W
elcome to the brand new community magazine for Launceston, Launceston Life.
I have spent most of my life living in Launceston, where my family can be traced back hundreds of years! Back then we were the Hillman’s, Cottreals and Body’s to name a few, of which I am proud to say there are still many in the town. We ran fish and chip shops, video shops, we were writers and typesetters, artists and soldiers (my great Uncle Gerald’s name is on the war monument in the square), and each and every one of us had a passion for community life. In 2018 and beyond I still feel this passion, which is why when the Launceston Link closed I felt it was my duty as a member of the community and as part of an independent publishing company to carry it on. With a strong interest in the community and being part of many groups and events in the town myself, it seemed like the most natural and perfect fit to take under my wing! Although you will find some new content, we have tried not to take the heart out of the magazine, retaining features like “Larry the Lamb” and the “Wosson” pages so you don’t miss out on important community events. We have been overwhelmed with the support of local businesses, groups, people, and the Town Council, and really hope we have done the Launceston Link justice in its new version. We welcome any feedback so that we can continue to build, grow and improve Launceston Life as time goes on, so please do not hesitate to email me on hello@launcestonlife.com with your comments.

he White Hart Hotel is a well known 17th Century Grade II listed building boasting a central position in Launceston Town Centre, and has just come under new ownership and management. Rachael Slater, the new manager, tells Launceston Life how happy she has been with the response since opening the newly refurbished building in August this year. “We would like to thank the community for all their support since opening” says Rachael. “It has been overwhelming, and we are delighted to welcome our customers, new and old!”. The White Hart Hotel serves food from 7.30am until 9pm, and you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner from their family-friendly menu. Room hire is also available with or without catering for private functions, parties or celebrations.

aunceston Foodbank has become part of the community in the last few years, working alongside schools, churches, groups and agencies to assist local people and their families with food in times of crisis. We are very proud of the work we do, which would not be possible without the large group of volunteers who work in the Foodbank and our charity shop on Newport Industrial Estate. The charity shop was opened four years ago to provide an income to enable the Foodbank to stay open, and we are pleased to say it now funds us opening five mornings a week. To pursue future projects, the Foodbank has a “Pre-Loved” sale in Lifton’s new community hall on the 29th September, where all the items on sale have been donated to the charity shop.

As you would expect from a restaurant owned by local farmers; the finest local and seasonal produce is at the heart of our menus. We bring food from field to plate and showcase what Cornwall has to offer. Whether for brunch, lunch or dinner - the silver lining to The Moat’s delicious offering is the view over rolling countryside.

I’m not sure about you, but I have only just recovered from the glitz and glam of the last amazing and hugely successful Masquerade Ball that local award-winning hairdressers Craig Chapman Hair Design organised in February. Well, here we are with another one that I think will top all events to date! On Saturday 27th October, Craig and co will be putting on a spookily good party in the Town Hall and bringing all us locals together for a good old dance! Kicking off at 7:30pm and with no set finish time, it’s clear to see that a good time is going to be had by all. Proceeds from the Ball will be going to to The Oarsome Foursome, who in December 2019 will be rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from the Canary Islands to Antigua raising money for Carefreebreaks and Cornwall Blood Bikes. The all-women crew of four are in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s respectively and between them hope to break the world record for the oldest ladies four crew row across the Atlantic Ocean! Everything has been thought of for this years Halloween Ball, and you’ll find a new cocktail bar, music from Joey and The Lips and DJ Tim Coleman plus lots more. So what are you waiting for? Get the date in your diary, buy your ticket and get planning that outfit. See you there!
We caught up with the Oarsome Foursome to hear their reasons behind taking part in this tough challenge. Linda Whittaker - Reason for the row: Determination and madness! “This event is about coming together, making a difference, having fun and recognising the contributions our charities make locally, who rely on people like you and me to do what they do…and very well at that!” Claire Allinson - Reason for the row: Supporting Cornwall Blood Bikes who saved her Dad’s life. “If I can ensure I can give another family the same outcome as me, then a 3,000 mile row doesn’t seem unreasonable!” Mo O’Brien - Reason for the row: Proving women don’t have to watch life happening from the sidelines! “The charities we are doing this epic row for are truly worthy of help and any one of us, families or friends, could easily be relying on them one day. I wish to live my life to the full and don’t want to put anything off that I can do now, we don’t know what’s around that corner.” Bird Watts - Reason for the row - To raise awareness for the charities and their fantastic services. “To row across the Atlantic with my mum will be incredible! Life is too short to not take advantage of opportunities, if someone asks you to row an ocean, you have to say yes!” • Fancy dress optional. Tickets are £15 and will be on sale a month before the event from Craig Chapman Hair Design, Broad Street, Launceston. You can donate to The Oarsome Foursome or find out more by visiting their Just Giving page or www.oarsomefoursome.co.uk. “ As the Council leader, I make no apologies for setting an ambitious agenda which will secure a sustainable economy, jobs and homes for the people of Cornwall ”
L
ike many other people, I’ve been enjoying spending time with my family this summer. We are blessed to live in a fantastic part of the world and one of the most iconic and beautiful places in the UK. In Cornwall we have a strong identity which goes beyond our beautiful beaches and rolling green hills, cream teas and pasties. We are a pioneering people who took tin mining to the world. This spirit continues today as we support thriving new enterprises to grow. We are becoming the workplace of choice for fast-growing sectors like digital tech and creative industries. We have the potential to be a global resource for lithium and rare minerals, pioneer new ways of generating clean energy from our granite and our seas and help feed the world sustainably through new agri-tech. By 2020, we will be home to the UK’s first horizontal satellite launches in more than 50 years following a recent deal with Virgin Orbital. As the Council leader, I make no apologies for setting an ambitious agenda which will secure a sustainable economy, jobs and homes for the people of Cornwall. But I am also conscious of finding the balance between planning a bold and ambitious future for Cornwall and giving local communities a greater say in their own destiny. As we face less and less funding from central government, our future – whether you’re shaping plans for a spaceport or you’re concerned about regeneration of a much-loved local park - rests in shaping and controlling our own destiny and in local people being able to influence the decisions that are made about local services, facilities and assets. We support this with our localism approach, by hosting Community Network Panels and in working closely with town and parish councils. When predecessor publication Launceston Link closed, a chunk of our community fabric disappeared, and along with it the way you find out about local activities, how to access services and how to take an active part in society. I’m glad to see a local media presence restored as Launceston Life. I have no doubt it will very quickly become part of our local community, keeping our community connected, giving residents a voice and helping to keep you informed about Cornwall Council’s work and services. May Launceston Life have a long and successful run at sharing the stories that are the heart and soul of our community.
Adam Paynter is the Leader of Cornwall Council and the member for Launceston North and North Petherwin. He has been a member of Cornwall Council since 2013 and lives in North Petherwin with his young family.

Doggy Trails for Waggy Tails
1. Y our starting point is a public footpath opposite the The Manor House Inn at Rilla Mill, Callington (PL17 7NT). Follow the undulating path keeping the river Lynher on your left. The lower path offers an extra swim spot. 2. Go through a gate using stepping stones to cross a stream and muddy area. 3. N ext you will come to a fork with a holly bush in front, hiding a wooden gate which steeply leads up steps and path. 4. I t’s time to get dogs on leashes as you approach a quiet lane! Turn left downwards, keeping a keen eye for a narrow path on your right (if you miss it, follow the lane to the medieval bridge and turn right into the woodland). 5. T he path meanders through native trees towards a conifer plantation via another gate and a mining cave to the right. Keep left to join a stony track leading down to the river and a deep swim area. 6. T urn right to a rope bridge traversing the river. Beyond you can explore many permissive trails leading to a cascade with more swimming opportunities and revealing an industrial past.

News from Launceston Town Council
I am delighted to be able to write in this first edition of Launceston Life, which picks up from where the excellent Launceston Link publication left off. The Link allowed the Town Council the opportunity to give updates on works and projects we were involved in and it is very exciting to know that we will be able to continue that.
well as looking from the financial perspective of what is affordable. To date the meetings have been very positive and I look forward to providing positive news in the next issue of Launceston Life.
The latest from Launceston Town Council
As the Duchy has enjoyed the heatwave, we have been doing what all good Councils do when the sun shines and that is of course plan for our Christmas lights! We have been walking round the town with lights suppliers and working closely with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure we give the town the best display in the West. We were also very excited to agree with Heart FM, that they will be bringing their amazing Christmas market back to the Town Hall this December.
The Launceston Life will sit side by side with the Launceston Town Guide and the Discover Launceston Guide in providing local residents as well as visitors to Launceston details of all that is happening in this wonderful part of the world. August sees the Council recess, and therefore we do not hold a meeting of the Full Council however that does not mean we have not been busy! Our Properties Manager, David James, has been working hard on looking at the much needed refurbishment works required for the public toilets in the Westgate car park and work on these will begin very soon. This work will compliment the refurbishment of the entire car park which is currently ongoing and which to date has seen the car park interior re-painted, new lighting installed and the overgrown planting areas beginning to be cleared. Work will also soon be starting on the refurbishment of the Roundhouse, the Grade II Listed octagonal shaped building at Newport.
Before we get to Christmas, we will be marking the Centenary event of the end of the First World War. The Launceston Branch of the Royal British Legion are arranging the Remembrance activities by the War Memorial and Launceston Town Hall will be open after the service to provide light refreshment and give the community the space to come together and reflect on their memories, loved ones, thoughts and experiences. After we received and tried to come to terms with the devastatingly sad news about our Councillor, Val Budgen-Cawsey, we had the privilege to take part in the incredible Val Walks Tall event. To see so many people come out to support Val and all that she was fighting for was quite incredible, but was topped by the fantastic sight of Val, in full Union Jack dress, sitting atop a throne of hay bales on the back of one of our Council vehicles, leading us all on our way‌ simply amazing!
As Clerk I, along with a working party of Launceston Town Councillors, have attended a number of meetings with Cornwall Council as we continue to explore ways to ensure a continued library service is provided for the town. We have looked at potential new sites for a library as well as exploring the type of services which we as a Town Council can provide, both for the needs of the town as

to provide a range of events for all ages and our Support Services officer, Kate Stark, works tirelessly to promote the wonderful venues that we are so fortunate to have. Since the Town Council took ownership of the Launceston Ambulance Hall the usage has significantly increased and the Hall is now being used for meetings, training delivery, mediation, Launceston Wine Circle, private parties, bereavement support and band practices along with regular clubs, groups and events open to the general public. The next one of these events is the ‘Big Coffee Morning’ on 26th September and we also have a two day exhibition by the Launceston Group West Country Embroiderers on the 28th and 29th September. The latest from Launceston Town Council
Launceston Voluntary First Aid Service will be running a Save a Life Campaign day in the Hall on 27th October or you could join the Low Intensity Zumba class every Tuesday at 9.45am, Launceston Folk Dance Club every Tuesday at 8pm, Launceston Youth Theatre on Saturday mornings or Slimming World who host meetings throughout the day on Mondays and Thursdays. We were sad to say goodbye to long serving member of staff Alison Jeffery, our TIC Manager who is taking a well deserved break from Local Government to spend time with her family and to enjoy exploring some of the many places she spent her time telling others to visit. Alison provided a pivotal role in promoting the town and the surrounding areas, in setting up our very successful monthly markets and producing our wonderful Town Guide. We are currently recruiting for the role and looking for someone special to be able to continue Alison’s great work. Thank you for taking the time to read about what the Council has been doing and please remember that you can call, email or visit us in person if there is any information or updates you would like. Now as the sun is back out, I am off to sort those Christmas lights. Christopher Drake Town Clerk

Two examples of the work of Leo Saunders
In September, Launceston artist Leo Saunders is to be Terre Verte Gallery’s first artist in residence. While exhibiting his own work at the gallery alongside fellow North Cornwall artists Dorothy Hanna, Karen Howse, Mark Hutton and Richard Sharland, Leo is going to be painting there, creating a new group of paintings inspired by Terre Verte and its surroundings in Altarnun. After four years exhibiting work by a wide range of artists from near and far, the Altarnun gallery has now created a studio space for an artist to work at their premises so visitors can see an artist’s work developing alongside finished
paintings in an exhibition. “I am delighted that Leo is going to be our first resident artist” says gallery owner Richard Sharland. “He has lived and painted in Launceston for many years and has family roots in the town that go back generations. His thoughtful abstract paintings are filled with observation, deep resonant colour and a sense of stillness and peace that contrasts with our busy world. We are excited that he is going to spend some time here creating new work inspired by Terre Verte - the place, its mood, spirit and history”. The exhibition “Resonance“ runs from 8th September to 2nd October. Printmakers Dorothy Hanna and Karen Howse, painters Leo and Richard and potter Mark Hutton are all local to the Launceston area, though it is the first time these five have exhibited all together. The following exhibition “Nature, Our Nature” runs from 13th October to 9th November and features Kate Walters, Jess Carr, Annabelle Harris and others.

business C
an you help improve and grow our well known and loved Orchard Centre? The Orchard Centre is at the heart of Launceston’s community, and there are exciting prospects ahead for this much loved building. However, in order for it to better serve the community there is a great need for funding, along with work needed on the building. At the moment the centre is home to a range of businesses (publishers of this magazine included!), and also hosts various community groups. That being said, the building has so much
more to give but needs the help of funding and support from local people who may be able to help out with its maintenance needs. The carpets need to be professionally cleaned, floor coverings need replacing, the centre needs redecorating, better internet connectivity is needed and some windows and doors need replacing too. The management committee at The Orchard Centre are set to breathe new life into and raise funds for the building by offering hot desk facilities, a meeting room and more offices, as well as opening its cafe on Saturday mornings which
will be run by Youth Club members. The cafe area along with community room/kitchen are also available to rent for larger meetings or clubs. The committee have big plans to offer more Youth Club services, most notably an additional Youth Club evening to provide the opportunity for young people to be involved with and support their local community. • If you think you could help to grow and improve The Orchard Centre contact Ellie Mason on manager@ orchardcentre.org or call 01566 788700.

Lets get down to business: The Orchard Centre
Let’s get down to
Pillar
of our community
Pillar of our community: Val Bugden-Cawsey
After being diagnosed with a life changing and limiting illness, many people would choose to do as little as possible - but Val Bugden-Cawsey has chosen a slightly different path.
S
tanding at over 6 foot tall, Val has a big personality to match her height! She has made remarkable achievements in raising both funds and awareness since her diagnosis of an Advanced Malignant Melanoma (a very rare form of cancer) this year, and has set the ball rolling to inspire and empower people to organise events for the cause. Her health profoundly deteriorated in a short space of time following her diagnosis, and a huge number of people stepped up to ensure events happened and fundraising goals were achieved, even if she could not be there herself. Val chose to raise funds for a particular research project into her form of cancer being delivered at Derriford. She chose to do this in the hope that in the future someone else may be able to face the same diagnosis and survive it. The fund raising achievement is remarkable and events have been organised up and down the country by many people who have been touched by Val in some way. In July this year, Val’s Just Giving page was in the top 3% of fundraisers,
and she has high hopes of reaching a total of £50,000 - and with a fundraising swimming gala in the pipeline that total may be reached very soon! By not shying away from her illness, she has not only raised awareness and money for the cause but also allowed others affected by cancer to open up and face their own feelings. Retaining her sense of self and her sense of humour throughout her illness, people have felt able to open up and trust Val with their own experiences, which is very important in such sensitive situations. Along with Val’s big voice and actions, she also has a big heart, always keen to give others credit and praise where it is due; particularly to all the people without whom these fundraising events and talks would not have taken place. Val is one of a kind. No doubt the remarkable achievements made in raising funds are as a result of her charisma, her attitudes and also her broad network of friends and well wishers.
