GRANITE WORKTOPS & KITCHENS

2019 is upon us and, on behalf of the Association, I would like to take this opportunity of wishing all our many members and supporters a belated happy New Year. Looking back on 2018, we have during the year sadly lost several great supporters of the Association and Royal Cornwall Show and their input and involvement will be greatly missed. Amongst these are former Departmental Stewards, William Brent and Bevil Bunt, the Honorary Director of the Showyard, Robert Knowles and Robert Truscott who was so involved both as a show contractor as well as, for many years, Chairman of the Sheep Shearing Committee. Their contribution and those of so many others are a vital component in making the organisation so successful. As you will see, contained in this issue of the Royal Cornwall is notice of the Association's AGM in the Pavilion Centre on Thursday 14 March at 3.30pm and the abbreviated accounts for the year ended 30th September 2018. As you will see, the Association has experienced another very successful year with the highlight of course being a very memorable Royal Cornwall Show overflowing with hot competition, excellent trade exhibits and the bonus of the Prince’s Countryside Parade as part of the celebrations of HRH The Prince of Wales’ 70th birthday. Full accounts for the year are available from the office on request. 2018 also saw the completion of the first full year of operation of our new ‘Farm & Country’ education roadshow which has visited large numbers of primary schools and other venues to teach children (and those not so young) where their food and drink comes from. Planning is also again well underway for the incredibly popular Farm & Country Event which will again take place over two days (27 & 28 March), welcoming some 750 primary school children on each day for an action packed food and farming experience. New stewards for this most worthwhile activity are always welcomed and please let us know if you would like to become involved! You can find out more about the Association’s educational activities on page 27. The 2019 Royal Cornwall Show (6 - 8 June) offers another busy event. Equine and livestock prize schedules will be available soon and forwarded automatically to all 2018 competitors. Anyone else wishing to receive entry forms, should contact Myra Langdon on 01208 814489, email; livestock@royalcornwall.co.uk or simply visit the website at www.royalcornwallshow.org/competitors. May I take this opportunity to remind members that subscriptions were due on 1st January with early renewal being much appreciated

Royal Cornwall set to host

all-female shearing competition T

he sheep shearing section at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show will feature a new competitive class exclusively for women shearers. Competitive sheep shearing classes and demonstrations are held across all three Show days and draw large crowds. Competitors are drawn from around the world and include top professional shearers from Australia and New Zealand, as well as home grown champions, with the aim of winning a coveted Royal Cornwall title. One budding competitor, 19-year-old Jo Sandercock from Altarnun near Launceston, has been shearing for four years and is really looking forward to the taking on the challenge. “I think many girls are worried about competing in what is a male dominated world and don’t feel confident to take part. So a female only competition will give them more confidence and the opportunity to give it a go and get involved. “A couple of women already compete against the men, so they will no doubt take part in this new class as well.” Asked how she hoped she’d get on in June, Jo said: “A win is always a bonus!” Christopher Riddle, show secretary said: “This will be the first time an all-female shearing class will feature at the Show and it will provide the perfect opportunity for the many good lady shearers out there to get involved and showcase their skills.” The new shearing class has been generously sponsored by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen. More than 120,000 visitors are expected to enjoy Cornwall’s largest event, which runs from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th June at the Royal Cornwall Events Centre, Wadebridge ► To find out more about entering the competition contact the section secretary, Catherine Jasper on 07828 729144 or visit www.royalcornwallshow.org/competitors

Poldark stunt horses thunder back T

to the Royal Cornwall Show

he equine stars and stunt riders from the popular television series such as Poldark, Victoria and Peaky Blinders will be saddling up and making a welcome return to the Royal Cornwall Show on the 6th, 7th and 8th June. The Atkinson Action Horses, who have spent more than twenty years training horses and riders to feature in film & TV productions including five series of Poldark, will be returning to Cornwall to perform at the county’s largest annual event. The stunt team were a big hit with the Royal Cornwall crowds when they made their debut at the 2016 Show. They return to the Wadebridge showground’s main ring with their talented horses and riders with a brand new, breath-taking show. Their latest act will feature their astounding brand of horseback acrobatics including Roman riding, drags, falls, pickups, flips and rearing horses. Mark Atkinson, founder of Atkinson Action Horses, was the horse master in charge of the action during the filming of all five Poldark series and is looking forward to heading back to Cornwall. “We really enjoy our time in Cornwall and have found the people to be really friendly and helpful, just like back home in East Yorkshire.” The stunt riders appearing at the Royal Cornwall, including Mark’s son Benjamin who has acted as Aidan Turner’s stunt double in Poldark, thoroughly enjoy performing to a live audience. “Our riders really look forward to performing for the crowds at shows. They get a real buzz from a crowd that they just don’t get when they are filming.” Christopher Riddle, Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association secretary said: “The Atkinson Action Horses were so well received the last time they were with us so we are very much looking forward to seeing their amazing display.” ► For more information about this year’s Royal Cornwall Show and to buy tickets, memberships and grandstand tickets online please visit: www.royalcornwall.co.uk

Royal Cornwall dog show secures Crufts qualifiers

T

he dog show staged at this year’s Royal Cornwall Show has been promoted to a Premier Open Show for the first time which will create many chances for exhibitors to qualify for Crufts. A total of 56 dogs competing at Wadebridge in June will qualify for the Kennel Club’s prestigious flagship event in March 2020. Dogs are divided into seven groups at shows; Pastoral, Working, Hounds, Gundogs, Toys, Utility & Terrier. The top four dogs and four puppies in each group will now secure coveted Crufts qualification. The change comes after the Kennel Club recently introduced major reforms as part of the biggest shake-up to the open show scene for more than a generation. Following extensive consultations with show societies, exhibitors, judges and other interested parties, the Kennel Club have acted to increase interest in local shows, which are an important and essential part of dog showing. The ability to obtain a Premier Open Dog Show licence came on the condition that more breeds of dog were accommodated and all existing breeds will have two classes instead of one within the Show’s canine section. In response, classes have been expanded this year to include Belgian Shepherd Dogs – Malinois; Bouvier des Flanders; Dogues de Bordeaux; Bedlington Terriers; Cesky Terriers; Dandie Dinmont Terriers; Jack Russell Terriers; Greyhounds; Gordon Setters and Clumber Spaniels. Jennifer Hick, secretary of the canine section said: “With even more breed classes and so many opportunities to qualify for Crufts we look forward to extra interest and entries at the already popular canine section at the Royal Cornwall Show.” Entries are already open for the canine section at the Royal Cornwall Show (6-8 June) and close for postal entries on Friday 12th April and for online entries close Sunday 21st April. ► The section’s prize schedule, entry forms and link to the online entry site can be found by visiting: www.royalcornwallshow.org/competitors/dogs

PFK FRANCIS CLARK

Last Call for Making Tax Digital (MTD)

Georgina Stephens Cloud Services Adviser PKF Francis Clark georgina.stephens@pkf-francisclark.co.uk 01872 276477

As you are all hopefully now aware, with effect from 1 April 2019, the MTD legislation comes into force. This deadline is fast approaching so a final push is needed to ensure you are compliant and we can help with this. In summary, businesses with taxable turnover over ÂŁ85,000 (i.e. compulsorily registered for VAT) are required to be MTD compliant and must submit VAT returns to HMRC via a digital link. To do this you need to be using functional compatible software that can record and preserve digital records, and provide information direct to HMRC. Initially this may seem onerous if it means you need to move from your current system to a cloud based system, but clients that have already made this move have found there to be many advantages of their new system. It is therefore important that we can help every client unlock these advantages for their business. For every client, real-time information and the ability to see key figures on a dashboard designed specifically for the user, together with a variety of management reports, enables decisions to be made quickly using accurate information. Being cloud based your accountants and also, where applicable, your agricultural consultant, can also access this information and provide timely, pro-active advice throughout the year, so decisions can be made at the times that matter and this is key for tax planning. The cloud based packages we recommend are user-friendly and our team of experts can provide full training on their use. Learning anything new can feel daunting

and needs an investment of your time, but the long-term efficiencies and time saved are well worth it. Automated bookkeeping through the use of scanning invoices into the system, machine learning and bank feeds for downloading statements can save a significant amount of time. An egg producer who raises 130 sales invoices a day has recently moved to Xero and now finds they can raise and send their sales invoices in an hour, rather than the afternoon it took them previously. The invoices can also be emailed directly to the customers through Xero, meaning they receive the invoices more quickly and therefore hopefully will also pay more quickly, providing a time saving and also a cash flow advantage for the client. Another real-life example is a farmer producing several crops and also running a dairy farm. Previously the bookkeeping involved using a number of separate spreadsheets. This time consuming process resulted in VAT returns not always being completed on a timely basis and often with errors. The use of so many spreadsheets also meant the farmer never knew how much profit they were making overall until the year-end accounts were prepared, often up to 6 months after that year-end. We have transitioned this client to Xero and, using the department functions, they can still track the results for each individual area, but they are now also up to date with VAT submissions and there are far fewer errors. If you are not yet MTD compliant please contact your local PKF Francis Clark adviser as soon as possible to talk about the best solution for your business.

£1,000 prize on offer

in farm diversification competition

E

ntries are open for a prestigious competition that celebrates and recognises innovation within the local agricultural industry. The 2019 edition of the Duke of Cornwall’s Award is open to farms based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who operate successful diversification enterprises to supplement their core agricultural business. The winner of the coveted award will receive a signed certificate and a cash prize, provided by His Royal Highness The Duke of Cornwall, of £1000. The presentation will take place during this year’s Royal Cornwall Show (6-8 June). The Flindall family from Chypraze Farm near Pendeen in West Cornwall were named as last year’s winner. Inheriting a run down, unviable 140 acre farm in 2009 they have subsequently developed a multi-faced, sustainable business capable of supporting the family. They established their own herd of Saddleback pigs and Hereford cattle and added further value by butchering, packing and selling their own meat direct to the public.

More recently the farm’s stunning coastal location has been utilised to their advantage and created a new, lucrative income stream. A wedding venue, The Cornish Wedding Barn, was developed on the farm with the renovation of an unused, tumbledown granite dairy barn. Previous award winners have also included a cheese maker, education facility and a specialist ATV machinery manufacturer. Entries are currently being welcomed from any relevant individual, business or organisation, with nominations also accepted from third parties. Sir Ferrers Vyvyan, Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association Vice Chairman and Duke of Cornwall’s Award judge said: “In all likelihood there has never been a time when more farmers have been considering diversification. Figures from Defra are staggering showing that over 70% of farms in the UK have now diversified in some way, generally to head off the risk of the uncertain times we live in.

“In Cornwall, always an innovative county, we are probably well ahead of the curve with a sheer historical determination to continue living as we have in our wonderfully beautiful county. “Over the last 7 or 8 years the quality of the entries in this competition have been extremely high. We look for a good business plan displaying business sustainability, we look for a quality product and we look as how the business has benefited and integrated with the farm.We do also bear in mind who would also benefit the greatest from the award, not only from the financial point of view but also from the associated PR. It’s always a tough decision as to who wins!” ► Entry and nomination information can be found by visiting www.royalcornwall.co.uk/competitors, or request further details by calling 01208 812183 or email:info@royalcornwall.co.uk. Entries for the Duke of Cornwall’s Award close on 1st March 2019.

Agri-tech Innovation T

doesn’t have to cost the earth

he Agri-tech Cornwall Innovation Grant Scheme (ACIGS) has had successes throughout 2018 and early on in 2019, awarding grants to some key Cornish businesses supporting the development of RD&I activities in the county. These grants have been indicative in demonstrating the breadth of ingenuity, as well as the drive and ambition of what these Cornish businesses are achieving in the agri-tech sector on our very doorsteps. As you may recall from previous articles in this publication, we receive applications from a diverse mix of businesses; such as app designers and software developers who’ve little previous engagement with the agricultural sector but consider that their products and services will be beneficial. Then businesses like Teagle and Chapman Machinery, who are more closely aligned to the agribusiness supply chain, apply to ACIGS to further their own development of new products and services which have already been in the RD&I stage for some time. The costs of innovation are equally diverse; dependent on how much the idea or product has been developed to date, and the associated investment already made, and the grants can be from as little as £2,500! ACIGS’ remit is to work with and target Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and provide support to that business to stimulate their own RD&I activities, which can be adopted once concepts have been proven to be beneficial to that business, and where appropriate the market overall.

With all of the external pressures facing the agrifood sector, this article is to encourage eligible businesses to come forward for an informal discussion, who are at that ‘embryonic’ stage of an RD&I concept but may lack the expertise, time, and funds to develop it further. Small grants from £2,500 to £5,000 can be used for feasibility studies, market testing, commissioning specialist expertise and research, patent applications, and a range of other activities at the pre- development stages of the innovation process. ► To find out more information about ACIGS, please telephone 01872 322672, email agritech@cornwalldevelopmentcompany.co.uk to speak to a Business Engagement Manager, or alternatively you can contact us via LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.

To be eligible for election a candidate must have paid his subscription when due, for two consecutive years and must be proposed and seconded in writing by two members of the Association, with the nomination forwarded to the Secretary by 1st September. All other positions are determined by the Council. The Council are also the trustees for the purposes of charity law. INDUCTION AND TRAINING OF COUNCIL MEMBERS New Council members have normally previously acted as show stewards for a number of years, gaining knowledge and experience of the running of the show. They are provided with copies of the minutes of previous relevant meetings and with training publications as published by the Charity Commission. The large number of Association Council members also provides an ideal mentoring body for new members. ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE The day to day operations of the Association are overseen by the Secretary, with the assistance of a small team of staff. The Secretary is supervised by the Officers, consisting of the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer and Director of Showyard. The Officers of the Association report back to the Council, via the General Purposes Committee. The charity has also set up the Prize Schedule Committee, Judges Selection Committee and Investment Sub Committee, who also report back to the Council. The Council consists of the President, President Elect, Chairman, Vice Chairman, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Honorary Director of Showyard, such representatives appointed by the Council and up to 48 Elected Members. KEY MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL REMUNERATION The Council consider the key management personnel of the charity to be the Council, the Secretary, PA to the Secretary, Showground Manager, Pavilion Centre Manager, Media Manager and Education Co-ordinator, as these people are in charge of directing and controlling the Association and running and operating the Association on a day to day basis. The Council members give their time freely for their role as Council members. Details of other remuneration and expenses paid to Council members is disclosed in the full accounts. The pay of the key management personnel is reviewed annually and considered in the light of local market conditions, typical wage inflation and by comparison to similar roles in other charitable organisations. RISK MANAGEMENT The Council acknowledges their responsibility to assess and manage the risks that the organisation faces and to review them at least annually. However, such systems can only provide reasonable and not absolute assurance against errors, fraud, operational failures and the impact of external events. Council have considered and identified major risks facing the charity and the establishment of controls to mitigate them. A risk register has been established and was approved by the Council on 3 December 2002. During the year the risk register was reviewed and updated. The latest update was approved by the Council in January 2018. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES The Association is established: (a) to promote agriculture, horticulture, forestry, conservation and industry for the public benefit (in particular but not exclusively in the County of Cornwall); and to improve and advance them in all their branches and in all trades, crafts and professions with them in an exclusively charitable manner. (b) to advance science, research, and education in connection with agriculture, horticulture, forestry, conservation and industry for the public benefit; and (c) to promote the improvement of all forms of livestock and the prevention and eradication of diseases in all forms of livestock. The Association’s offices are at the showground. The Association has ten regular members of staff. They are assisted by part-time staff and outside contractors during the busy periods leading up to, during and immediately after the Royal Cornwall Show. When planning the Association’s activities for the year the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit are borne in mind by the Council.

REVIEW OF OBJECTIVES FOR THE YEAR AND THE STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE THEM Objective - To successfully stage the 2018 Royal Cornwall Show with a continued strong emphasis on agriculture (including livestock), horticulture, forestry, conservation and related industries, including their improvement / advancement in terms of science, research and education. Strategy - The use of well-established structures and systems developed over a significant number of years and continued close relationships with a wide range of related bodies (i.e. Breed Societies etc). Objective - To further develop the Royal Cornwall Events Centre for the benefit of those using it. Strategy - A continuing development programme which for 2018 included continuing general refurbishment of the Association’s buildings / facilities, the installation of WiFi connectivity for various areas, the creation of a commentary position for the Forestry section, further improvements to the Farm & Country Roadshow trailer, continued work on the Event Centre’s electrical network, work in connection with a building for the Sheep section and continued maintenance work to generally improve the showground and its surroundings. Objective – To continue with and further develop the Association’s educational activities Strategy – Over recent years, the Association has created and run some very successful educational initiatives including activities at the annual Royal Cornwall Show and at the Cornish Winter Fair, an annual two-day ‘Farm & Country’ event for primary school children and the ‘Farm and Country’ roadshow trailer which tours primary schools and other events in Cornwall and occasionally in Devon up to three days a week, helping to reconnect young people (and adults) with farming and food production. A series of six educational videos have also been commissioned and these are widely available and used as a resource to also help with promoting a better understanding of Cornish food and farming. CONTRIBUTION OF VOLUNTEERS The Association is greatly indebted to a very large number of volunteers, in excess of 600, who act as Stewards and in other capacities to ensure the smooth running of the show. ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE Review of charitable activities The 2018 Royal Cornwall Show, held on 7, 8 and 9 June, was felt to be a great success and excellent weather conditions during the pre-show period and for most of the show itself led to an increased attendance of just over 119,000 (2017: 111,000). The staging of The Princes’ Countryside Parade, a national celebration of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales’ rural patronages, was a great highlight and involved the presence at the show of a very large number of individuals and organisations and widespread publicity. The presence of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall on the first day of the show was also a very memorable aspect of a busy and successful event. During the visit, His Royal Highness also viewed the newly installed granite water fountain made and very kindly given by Mr Robbie Richards in memory of Mr Albert Riddle, the Association’s former secretary. During the show, a new water feature in memory of former Showground Manager, Mr Ben Luxton, who very sadly died during the year, was on show. The livestock and equine sections continue to attract excellent levels of entries from many parts of the UK. It is encouraging that the livestock sections continue to thrive and to promote improvement through competition as they have through the very long history of the show. The continued very strong demand for trade stand space at the show was again very evident with all stands fully let several months beforehand with, as previously, a very heavy emphasis on agricultural, horticultural, forestry, conservation and related businesses and organisations and waiting lists for any last-minute cancellations. The Royal Cornwall Show continues to provide a top-quality showcase for the region with an agricultural content of national repute and, as previously, very high levels of business activity were subsequently once again reported following the event. Large numbers of individuals, families and school and other groups attend the show annually, allowing continued educational opportunities from the wide ranging displays and exhibitions on agricultural, horticultural, forestry and conservation topics on show. An excellent example of the public benefit to be achieved from such events. Earlier in the year, on 20 & 21 March 2018, the Association again joined forces with the Cornwall Food and Farming Group to stage the fifth extremely successful discovery event for schools entitled ‘Farm and Country’ in the Exhibition Halls. This hugely popular event was attended by some 1,500 primary school children and teachers and was again widely regarded as an extremely worthwhile project. As an extension of such activities, the Association’s new ‘Farm and Country’ Roadshow was built and in operation from October 2017 and during the year visited over 50 schools and various other places and events with well over 4,000 children being taught in addition to those who attended the March event. Plans for the 2019 event on 27 & 28 March are already well in hand with all available places for visiting children fully booked. The Royal Cornwall Events Centre and the Pavilion Centre have again experienced a very busy year, providing a venue for a wide range of events/meetings etc., both large and small, and continues to provide Cornwall with excellent facilities for activities appealing to a wide cross-section of the county's population and interests. The Pavilion Centre (and the nearby Duchy Suite), continue to prove to be very popular venues for both business and social events, providing top quality facilities for the county. Full details can be seen on the website at www.pavilioncentre.co.uk. INVESTMENTS During the year the charity purchased additional investments of £327,345 (2017: £187,928), and disposed of investments with an original cost of £52,990 (2017: £51,279). Proceeds received for the disposals were £87,660 (2017: £45,632) giving a realised gain of £34,670 (2017: loss £5,647). There was an increase in the value of the investment portfolio over the year of £61,888 (2017: £123,428). This gives an overall gain on investments of £96,558, compared to last year’s unrealised gain of £117,781. FINANCIAL REVIEW Total income from showground admissions increased this year by 21.0% to £906,462 (2017: £749,242) which was as a result of increased attendance due to the weather in the prior year. Income from trade stands increased by 6.1% to £649,810 (2017: £612,170) and show entry fees have decreased by 8.3% to £70,457 (2017: £76,870). Total income from the Pavilion Centre decreased by 11.9% to £89,011 (2017: £100,996). Related expenditure incurred in running the pavilion increased by 1.5% to £81,464 (2017: £80,296), resulting in a surplus for the year of £7,547. This was a decrease on the previous year surplus which was £20,700. Annual membership subscriptions increased by 0.4% to £217,186 (2017: £216,205). Overall there was an increase in incoming resources of 8.8% from last year which resulted in a total income for the year of £2,451,417 (2017: £2,253,259). Costs for the year have increased by 1.8% to £2,234,199 (2017: £2,194,500). Show expenditure has decreased by 1.4% on the prior year to £1,467,211 (2017: £1,488,240). Other charitable expenditure totalled £675,470 (2017: £614,639), an increase of £60,831 on 2017. The overall effect of this was an increase in net incoming resources from £176,540 in the prior year to £313,776 in 2018. RESERVES The Council have continued to review the reserves policy taking into account the nature of the Association’s current activities and its future plans. At 30th September 2018 the Association held £4,976,866 funds, being £4,963,345 in unrestricted and designated funds and £13,521 in restricted funds. The Association’s reserves are primarily invested in the Showground at Wadebridge and in investments. The investments could be realised if necessary and are regarded as an ‘insurance policy’ against any day or days of the show having to be cancelled due to exceptional weather conditions or other extraneous factors, as happened in 1993, as well as amounts set aside for future capital expenditure. One day’s admission charges, based on this financial year could be £302,154 on average. INVESTMENT POLICY AND OBJECTIVE The investments are managed by Quilter Cheviot Limited who are also the holding trustees. An investment sub-committee has been established by Council which meets periodically with the investment advisors and which authorises any strategic changes to the portfolio. The fund manager has specific terms of engagement set on an annual basis, and the investment policy of the charity is to stay with ‘safe’ investments, which provide a balance of income and growth in listed equities and government stocks in line with the Trustee Investments Act 2000. PLANS FOR THE FUTURE The staging of successful future Royal Cornwall Shows continues to be of the highest importance to the Association and linked to this is the continued improvement of the showground facilities plus continued and extended involvement in educational projects. The Association have also joined forces with the Wadebridge Prime Stock Show Association in relation to the staging of The Cornish Winter Fair, an event which proved extremely popular when first staged in its extended form in 2015. This involvement also provides an excellent opportunity for extending the Association's educational activity. STATEMENT OF COUNCIL’S RESPONSIBILITIES The figures on page 18 are a summary from the audited annual report and accounts which were approved by the Council on 10th January 2019. However, they may not contain sufficient information to allow for a full understanding of the financial affairs of the Association. Marie Curie in Cornwall

M

arie Curie has been providing free care and support for millions of terminally ill people and their families for over 70 years. Marie Curie helps everyone affected by a terminal illness get the information and support they need. There are currently 22 Marie Curie nurses who cover the county of Cornwall. Recruitment is also taking place to increase this number to help us reach more patients. Marie Curie Nurses work night and day in people’s homes across the UK. We care for people with any terminal illnesses including cancer, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other illnesses. The charity also provides a wealth of information for someone who is ill as well as family members and friends. The charity has a Support Line (Tel: 0800 090 2309) staffed by trained advisers who can provide emotional

support and give trusted information on everything from day-to-day care to financial information and legal issues. Marie Curie also has an online Community where people can share experiences and find support by talking to people in a similar situation. What’s more, Marie Curie is the leader in research into better ways of caring for people with terminal illnesses and also campaigns on issues that affect people with a terminal illness and their families. Marie Curie has 9 hospices throughout the UK which offer specialist round-the-clock care We rely heavily on voluntary donations to continue providing our services. Volunteering is a great way to get involved and help raise more funds. Fundraising Groups work tirelessly organising national appeals such as The Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Parties and are wonderful ambassadors in their local community for Marie Curie.

CORNWALL COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

Producing homes for locals

forever

Cornwall Community Land Trust is one of the most successful community land trusts in the UK. We deliver affordable homes for local people in towns and villages in Cornwall and on Scilly. Vitally, the homes we build remain genuinely affordable, for local families in perpetuity - 236 in the last 10 years, in 23 projects.

If you’re a landowner we (CCLT) would like to hear from you. There are sites throughout Cornwall suitable for affordable housing.

If you’re a landowner we would like to hear from you.

National and local Planning Policy permits rural ‘exception’ sites where a small development can meet local need in perpetuity. This also benefits landowners who get significantly more than the only alternativei.e. agricultural value. They also have the satisfaction of knowing it will be used to help local people in housing need.

You’ll be aware that young people and families face intolerable housing pressure or move away because there are no decent homes they can afford. There are alsolong-established residents who can’t find a home suitable to their changing needs. These factors erode our local communities. But you may be able to help?

A small field only used for rough grazing on the edge of a village; part of a larger field that could be developed without making the rest of the land un-farmable. A site with some buildings that are no longer suitable for farming purposes; or a site that was put forward for the Local Plan but was not allocated?

If you’re interested in an initial FREE assessment of your land’s development potential, please get in touch on 01872 243554 or info@cornwallclt.org

New livestock and equine competitions

Cornish woodland competition recognises

E

added value

ntries are open for a bi-annual competition that recognises excellence among those businesses, landowners and individuals who manage Cornwall's valuable woodland and also add value to local timber. The Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association’s (RCAA) forestry section run the competition and it covers all aspects of woodland including management, conservation and recreation. Entries are welcomed from all types and sizes of business or landowner who have planted, maintained or renovated woodlands. Classes require a minimum of just half a hectare (1.23 acres) of woodland, so the competition is not just aimed at large scale forestry enterprises, but also those with smaller areas.

RCAA secretary, Christopher Riddle, said: "Entrants don’t require vast areas of woodland to qualify. We are looking at encouraging a much wider cross section of those in Cornwall who own and manage woodland to get involved." An additional class in the competition is aimed at local businesses who add value to Cornish round timber. Previous winners have included a timber hot tub and garden product manufacturer and a kiln dried firewood producer. This year’s winners will be presented with their prizes at the Royal Cornwall Show (6 – 8 June). Entry details can be found by visiting www.royalcornwall.co.uk/competitors or obtained from Terry Herron by calling 01872 520325 or email: therron@tregothnan.co.uk Entries close on Friday 8th March.

Entries are due to open in late February for the competitive livestock and equine sections for this year’s Royal Cornwall Show. As in most years, there have been some changes to the classes available. The cattle section will boast an exciting new team competition for the first time in 2019 for both dairy and beef categories. The action will unfold on Friday 7th June within the cattle judging ring where exhibitors representing each breed will create a team of five animals to compete against the other breeds within their section. It’s a special year for the British Charollais sheep as the Royal Cornwall has been selected as a focus show for the breed. National coverage will be broadcast live from the event and provide competitors the opportunity to showcase and promote the quality of their flocks. In the equine section the Dartmoor pony category welcomes a new class for two and three-year-old colts. In the main ring show jumping classes the mini major competition, introduced last year, is being expanded to accommodate eight pairs of competitors. ► Full details for competitors can be found by visiting www.royalcornwallshow. org/competitors. Entries for livestock and equine sections will close on Wednesday 17th April.

It’s a piece of cake... Written by marketing expert Harriet Wills (who secretly wishes she could be enjoying a cup of coffee with the team - image above).

I

was recently asked for my top tip by a friend thinking about making a holiday home investment. As Marketing Manager for one of the largest and most successful holiday home letting agencies in Cornwall, you’d be forgiven for thinking I’d find this question a piece of cake. The problem was that I simply couldn’t choose just one, perfect nugget of advice to top trump all top tips. Instead, I found myself imparting the large amount of golden advice for the holiday home investor which I’ve collected over the course of my career in tourism marketing. With research showing that the average holiday let property returns more than double the gross rental income of an equivalent buy to let, we can all agree that holiday home property is a smart investment. But when refining the decision about where to invest the type of property, it can be complicated to filter out the advice that’s good to know, from that which is critical to their investment being a financial success. To shed a little light, I’ve collaborated with our finest holiday letting experts, all working on the front line of the Cornish holiday home market. From our marketing team, skilled in digital advertising, to our property recruiters, expert at sharing market trends with homeowners; I’m delighted to share our Top 5 Tips for Holiday Home Investors:

1. Hot spots Property in Cornwall’s tourist hot spots are expensive and for good reason. Locations like Padstow, Newquay and St Ives are all strong brands with names tourists easily recognise. If you invest in a beautiful holiday cottage or stylish apartment in a popular tourist location it will serve you well. That said, some budgets are better suited to up-and-coming areas such as Porthleven. Our team at our Porthleven office are seeing Porthleven holiday home owners with higher returns on their investment and better capital appreciation in recent times compared to properties in hot spot areas. An investment in an area like Porthleven could

be a particularly smart move for investors with long-term goals to retire to their holiday home property, as securing the property now before prices are set to rise can serve you well.

2. Have an edge The world of holiday homes in Cornwall is highly competitive and whilst it’s still a very big cake with plenty to go around, it’s imperative to make sure that your slice is going to be profitable. With the holiday let market estimated at less than 1% out of a total of 23 million UK households, there’s great rewards to be had if your property has an edge over the holiday home down the road. Perhaps the property you invest in has the best view on the street or that it’s been refurbished with high quality, stylish fixtures and décor. With our portfolio of nearly 900 holiday homes in Cornwall, we know that the properties where owners invest in hot tubs, log burners or open wood fires often command higher prices and get more bookings that easily cover the costs of the initial investment and installation. Perhaps your edge is to go the extra mile and make the experience a memorable one for your customers.

3. Do the research Write a list of what you liked and didn’t like about the last holiday home you stayed in and apply it to your property. If you can’t remember your last break, then it’s time to get booking because it’s important to do the research and familiarise yourself with your competition. When it comes to choosing your holiday letting agency, it’s important to ask where they advertise. For example, as a homeowner at Cornish Horizons you’ll see your property advertised on our website, our partner websites including the national website ‘Original Cottages’ but also on popular booking platforms including Airbnb, HomeAway, and 30 others that specifically target holidaymakers in the UK and abroad.

4. How much could your property earn you? For those making the investment with a mortgage, holiday let mortgage providers will lend based on the income projection

...isn’t it? for the property. Be careful of agencies that overestimate your earning potential to win the job of marketing/managing your property. Ask a few agencies for their advice to get a fair and well-rounded picture of the annual earning potential of your investment. In your decision to choose a successful letting agency, those with an office near your property is an enormous benefit particularly over peak season and if you don’t live in Cornwall.

5. Flexibility is key The growth of booking platforms such as Airbnb and HomeAway has been substantial in recent years. It’s arguably also shifted customer behaviours towards the increased trend in short breaks. With these types of changing customer behaviours, once you’ve purchased your property it’s important to be flexible with changeover dates and allowing short breaks. Wishing you all the best with your investment! You can find out more by getting in touch with our team (they’re all really friendly).

Harriet Wills Marketing Manager

" We have made a point of being true to Norman Trevethan’s original recipe and to the Cornish ingredients, using hand-picked botanicals where possible"

It has probably not escaped your notice that over the last 10 years there has been a boom in the popularity of craft gin and it has become the most consumed spirit in the UK. “Cornish gin has been at the forefront of this movement, with Cornwall having the largest number of gin distilleries compared to other regions in the UK.” Says Marc Megilley from Saltash-based Trevethan Gin. “Today’s consumer is more conscious of a product’s regional provenance, quality and taste. Customers are drinking less but they are buying better quality and craft gin epitomises this new train of thinking.” Trevethan Gin was first conceived back in the 1920s by Norman Trevethan who invented a unique and truly Cornish gin from local hedgerow ingredients. The recipe for Trevethan Gin was first created in a simple copper pot in a disused lime kiln on the Port Eliot estate in South East Cornwall in 1929. Today the pot is slightly larger but the principals remain the same. “We have made a point of being true to Norman Trevethan’s original recipe and to the Cornish ingredients, using hand-picked botanicals where possible,” adds Marc. Head Distiller, John, applies his unique appreciation for the chemistry as well as the process of distillation, to create a beautifully crafted gin with complex flavours, powerful fragrance and a smooth texture. Despite these humble beginnings, Trevethan Gin has quickly become recognised internationally for its quality and taste. The signature gin has won a silver award for the last 3 years in the International Wine and Spirits competition and their Chauffeurs Reserve (Navy Strength) gin was awarded a silver outstanding last year. Marc concludes, “The 2018 Royal Cornwall Show was our first ever show and we really didn’t know what to expect. The show itself surpassed all of our expectations. “We will be coming back to the show this year and we will have our full complement of gins for everyone to try. We have been busy since last June so there will be new Trevethan Gins to savour and I hope you will come and find us for a free Gin and Tonic taster.” ► For more information visit: www.trevethandistillery.com

Farming and food education grows The Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association’s educational work grew significantly over the past year. The introduction of an outreach project taking farming and food education to Cornish primary schools has led to a dramatic uplift in the number of pupils these important messages have been able to reach. Education coordinator, Emma Parkyn, with the help of a team of volunteers has so far visited 55 primary schools across the county since November 2017. They’ve helped 4,738 pupils learn about the links between farming and food production to date.

In addition to this, the annual Farm & Country Days see a further 1,500 primary school pupils visit the Royal Cornwall Events Centre each March for a more in-depth, hands on learning experience. The 2019 Farm & Country Days take place on Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th March and have long been fully subscribed with another full complement of information hungry children.

FINANCE

Specialists in Agricultural Lending UK Agricultural Finance was founded to provide much needed business finance to rural communities across England, Scotland and Wales. The company recently secured institutional funding to expand its loan book by £150m to meet the demand from farmers for short and medium-term capital, after many of the banks cut their specialist lending teams during and post the financial crisis. Rural finance requires specialist knowledge and a lender willing to offer traditional face to face underwriting. UK Agricultural Finance’s team knows rural businesses, the many challenges they face, but most importantly their appeal. SEED

Better Seed and Bare Bums by Richard Jones from South West Seeds

W

ell, here we are in 2019 and what an exciting year it promises to be! We are all fed up with certain subjects beginning with the letter ‘B’, and I think that the word “Brexit!” will be banned in the not too distant future and confined to the Oxford Dictionary Dustbin. However, not all subjects beginning with a B are totally boring. For instance: Bare Bums Farmers have for hundreds of years recognised that plants do not grow well when the soil is cold. Before the thermometer there was no accurate method of discerning when the soil was warm enough for seeds to be planted which today is recognised to be around 8 degrees. However, one method that apparently was wildly employed, was for the farmer to walk out onto his ploughed field, drop his trousers and sit down on the soil. If he or she could bear the ground it was warm enough for planting! Better Seed Our new seed plant is now in full production and we are producing seed of the highest quality. This spring it has been gratifying to be able to process incoming barley and oat seed to very high standards. I cannot stress how important it is for the grower to have the best possible seed, whether Farm Saved or Certified. We aim to process all our seed to Higher Voluntary Standard and above. So far all our seed samples have come back to us with results after cleaning of 99.9% clean and pure. We take out more screenings than most merchants and we aim to produce a premium product for our growers. Seed treating is also an important part of the process and we are careful to ensure that highly accurate application rates are adhered to and the dressing is applied as evenly as possible.

Why is our seed so good? It is the use of excellent machinery, and the passion and care that we take with our seed production process. We really do care about the quality of the seed we produce and the effort we put into the cleaning and dressing process shows in the end result. South West Seeds has been processing seed in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset for nearly 40 years, so when you choose to buy our seed or have your Farm Saved Seed dressed by us it is backed up by years of experience and expertise. Also for added value, we have been using our Super Crop seed dressing. This micro-nutrient fertiliser really helps the plant to get off to a great start, producing more tillers and a larger root system. About half of our seed is now treated with Super Crop so I think that speaks for itself. Whatever the year brings, we will be working hard to give you an excellent service. Whether it is grass seed, root crops, cereal seed, mobile seed processing, maize, wildflower seed, or grain drying and conditioning machinery, you can rely on South West Seeds for ALL YOUR SEED NEEDS! We wish you a healthy and prosperous year ahead. Yours sincerely, Richard Jones South West Seeds ► South West Seeds (Cornwall) Ltd Treswarrow Farm St Endellion Port Isaac PL29 3TN 01208 881198 info@swseeds.co.uk
