Dearly Beloved For two organs

Everette Minchew

Never Theme Twice Š 2014

Commissioned by and Dedicated to my dear friend, Buck McDaniel.

Performance Notes

Dearly Beloved is the latest in my Open Piece series. This work allows the performers to progress at his/her own pace. The Organ 1 part is divided into sections A and B. Section A is to be played strictly at the tempo of c. q =40. It should be grandiose. Imagine a loud church organ. When the performer of Organ 1 has finished Section A he/she must progress to Section B which is very free. Once Organ 1 has begun section A Organ 2 should begin his/her part. The free sections should be just that. The notation is spatial. Progress at your own pace and move to the next note only when it feels appropriate. Listen to what is being played. There are three short soli. The performers may choose to play these at any point in the piece. Play a solo only when it feels appropriate. Once a solo is played return to your previous position. Soli may be played more than once by any or all performers. Some of the Soli can be transposed up or down an octave. All soli do not have to be performed in every performance. Each performance should last a minimum of 6 minutes.

The material of section A of the first organ part is taken from the beginning of Prince’s song ‘Let’s Go Crazy’. The song begins with an organ and a spoken monologue. The first words of the monologue are “Dearly Beloved”.
