Open Piece No. 5 for organ
Everette Minchew
Never Theme Twice Š 2014
Dedicated to Carson Cooman Duration: indeterminate (at least 4 minutes preferably longer)
Performance Notes Open Piece No 5 was composed for the talented organist and composer Carson Cooman. The piece can be performed on organ or with an open instrumentation ensemble (or even a combination of the two). The performer(s) must perform both A and B in which ever order they choose. Section A features material that is staggered to indicate delayed entrances of the notes on each staff. The material of Section B is presented as vertical chords to indicate a simultaneous entrance of the first chord. In each section the performer(s) should proceed at his/her own pace. In Section B, the performer(s) should hold the final note of the last chord until all notes are played. Let chords blend into each other. Begin with the dynamic of piano. Feel free to hold the notes in any voice as long as necessary. Listen carefully. This is where the fun happens. Let what you hear decide when you go to the next pitch or series of pitches. Play slowly. Crescendo and decrescendo when it feels necessary. The second page of the score features three soli. The performer(s) should decide when each one is played. Still listen carefully. Every solo does not need to be played with every performance if the performer(s) do not feel it necessary at the time. If an ensemble is performing this work please play the second solo on a keyboard instrument. (But it could also be performed on other instruments, be creative.) Accidentals apply only to the note they precede and do not apply to different octaves.
